Because phononic topological insulators have primarily been studied in discrete, graphene-like structures with C$_{6}$ or C$_{3}$ hexagonal symmetry, an open question is how to systematically achieve double Dirac cones and topologically non-trivial structures using continuous, non-hexagonal unit cells. Here, we address this challenge by presenting a novel computational methodology for the inverse design of continuous two-dimensional square phononic metamaterials exhibiting C$_{4v}$ and C$_{2v}$ symmetry. This leads to the systematic design of square unit cell topologies exhibiting a double Dirac degeneracy, which enables topologically-protected interface propagation based on the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE). Numerical simulations prove that helical edge states emerge at the interface between two topologically distinct square phononic metamaterials, which opens the possibility of QSHE-based pseudospin-dependent transport beyond hexagonal lattices.
We report the design of silica-based 1D phononic crystals (PnCs) with topologically distinct complete phononic bandgaps (PnBGs) and the observation of a topologically protected state of elastic waves at their interface. By choosing different structural parameters of unit cells, two PnCs can possess a common PnBG with different topological nature. At the interface between the two PnCs, a topological interface mode with a quality factor of ~5,650 is observed in the PnBG. Spatial confinement of the interface mode is also confirmed by using photoelastic imaging technique. Such topologically protec…
The symmetries that protect massless Dirac fermions from a gap opening may become ineffective if the Dirac equation is discretized in space and time, either because of scattering between multiple Dirac cones in the Brillouin zone (fermion doubling) or because of singularities at zone boundaries. Here we introduce an implementation of Dirac fermions on a space-time lattice that removes both obstructions. The quasi-energy band structure has a tangent dispersion with a single Dirac cone that cannot be gapped without breaking both time-reversal and chiral symmetries. We show that this topological …
Topological states of quantum matter exhibit unique disorder-immune surface states protected by underlying nontrivial topological invariants of the bulk. Such immunity from backscattering makes topological surface or edge states ideal carriers for both classical and quantum information. So far, topological matters have been explored only in the realms of electronics and photonics, with limited range of bulk properties and largely immutable materials. These constraints thus impose severe performance trade-offs in experimentally realizable topologically ordered states. In contrast, phononic meta…
We perform both lattice dynamics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate the existence of topologically protected phonon modes in a two-dimensional, monolayer hexagonal boron nitride sheet. The topological phonon modes are found to be localized at an in-plane interface that divides the system into two regions of distinct valley Chern numbers. The dispersion of this topological phonon mode crosses over the frequency gap [1123, 1278] cm^{-1}, which is opened through analogy with the quantum valley Hall effect by breaking inversion symmetry of the boron and nitride atoms in the…
In this Rapid Communication we investigate the coupling between excited electrons and phonons in the highly anisotropic electronic structure of the prototypical topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we are able to identify the emergence and ultrafast temporal evolution of the longitudinal-optical A$_{1g}$ coherent-phonon mode in Bi$_2$Te$_3$. We observe an antiphase behavior in the onset of the coherent-phonon oscillations between the $\overline{ΓK}$ and the $\overline{ΓM}$ high-symmetry directions that is consistent with warping. The qua…
Artificial honeycomb lattices with Dirac cone dispersion provide a macroscopic platform to study the massless Dirac quasiparticles and their novel geometric phases. In this paper, a quadruple-degenerate state is achieved at the center of Brillouin zone (BZ) in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice phononic crystal, which is a result of accidental degeneracy of two double-degenerate states. In the vicinity of the quadruple-degenerate state, the dispersion relation is linear. Such quadruple degeneracy is analyzed by rigorous representation theory of groups. Using method, a reduced Hamiltonian is o…
Topological insulators (TIs) are a new class of matter characterized by the unique electronic properties of an insulating bulk and metallic boundaries arising from non-trivial bulk band topology. While the surfaces of TIs have been well studied, the interface between TIs and semiconductors may not only be more technologically relevant but the interaction with non-topological states may fundamentally alter the physics. Here, we present a general model to show that such an interaction can lead to spin-momentum locked non-topological states, the Dirac cone can split in two, and the particle-hole …
We present a symmetric double-sided pillared phononic crystals (PPnCs) that can emulate both quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and quantum valley Hall effect (QVHE) by solely imposing different geometric perturbations. Indeed, the Dirac cones can occur in the low (deep subwavelength) and high frequency regime by judiciously turning the parameters of the attached pillars and even a double Dirac cone can be achieved. We realize the valley-protected, the pseudospin-protected or the pseudospin-valley coupled edge states with the proposed platform. Besides, we show a variety of refraction phenomena (…
Precise control of elastic waves in modes and coherences is of great use in reinforcing nowadays elastic energy harvesting/storage, nondestructive testing, wave-mater interaction, high sensitivity sensing and information processing, etc. All these implementations are expected to have elastic transmission with lower transmission losses and higher degree of freedom in transmission path. Inspired by topological states of quantum matters, especially quantum spin Hall effects (QSHEs) providing passive solutions of unique disorder-immune surface states protected by underlying nontrivial topological …
By considering analytical expressions for the self-energies of intervalley and intravalley phonons in graphene, we describe the behavior of D, 2D, and D$'$ Raman bands with changes in doping ($μ$) and light excitation energy ($E_L$). Comparing the self-energy with the observed $μ$ dependence of the 2D bandwidth, we estimate the wavevector $q$ of the constituent intervalley phonon at $\hbar vq\simeq E_L/1.6$ ($v$ is electron's Fermi velocity) and conclude that the self-energy makes a major contribution (60%) to the dispersive behavior of the D and 2D bands. The estimation of $q$ is based on an …
We show that the strongly spin-orbit coupled materials Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 (first non-Bi topological insulator) and their derivatives belong to the Z2 (Time-Reversal-Protected, elastic backscattering suppressed) topological-insulator class. Using a combination of first-principles theoretical calculations and photoemission spectroscopy, we directly show that Bi2Te3 is a large spin-orbit-induced indirect bulk band gap (about 150 meV) semiconductor whose surface is characterized by a single topological spin-Dirac cone. The electronic structure of self-doped Sb2Te3 exhibits similar Z2 topological pr…
Ultrafast carrier relaxation in the 2D topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 [gapped Dirac surface states (SS)] and how it inherits ultrafast relaxation in the 3D TI Bi2Se3 (gapless Dirac SS) remains a challenge for developing new optoelectronic devices based on these materials. Here ultrashort (100 fs) pumping pulses of ~340 nm wavelength (~3.65 eV photon energy) were applied to study ultrafast electron relaxation in the 2D TI Bi2Se3 films with a thickness of 2 and 5 quintuple layers (~2 and ~5 nm, respectively) using transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy in the ultraviolet-visible spectral regi…
The magnitude of electron spin polarization in topologically protected surface states is an important parameter with respect to spintronics applications. In order to analyze the warped spin texture in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films, we combine angle- and spin-resolved photoemission experiments with theoretical \textit{ab initio} calculations. We find an \textit{in-plane} spin polarization of up to $\sim$~45\% in the topologically protected Dirac cone states near the Fermi level. The Fermi surface of the Dirac cone state is warped and shows an \textit{out-of-plane} spin polarization of $\sim$~15\%. Th…
We theoretically investigate magnon-phonon hybrid excitations in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The bulk bands of hybrid excitations, which are referred to as magnon-polarons, are analytically shown to be topologically nontrivial, possessing finite Chern numbers. We also show that the Chern numbers of magnon-polaron bands and the number of band-crossing lines can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. For experiments, we propose to use the thermal Hall conductivity as a probe of the finite Berry curvatures of magnon-polarons. Our results show that a simple ferromagnet on a square lattice…
A two-dimensional mass-spring system with Honeycomb lattice for mimicking phononic quantum Hall effect is proposed. Its band structure shows the existence of Dirac cones and unconventional edge states that is similar to the vibrational modes in graphene. Interestingly, as the system is placed on a constantly rotational coordinate system, the Coriolis force resulted from the non-inertial reference frame provides a possibility to break the time-reversal symmetry. Thus, caused from topologically non-trivial band gaps, phononic edge states are present between bands, which are verified by the calcu…
Anisotropic bulk Dirac (or Weyl) cones in three dimensional systems have recently gained intense research interest as they are examples of materials with tilted Dirac (or Weyl) cones indicatig the violation of Lorentz invariance. In contrast, the studies on anisotropic surface Dirac cones in topological materials which contribute to anisotropic carrier mobility have been limited. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the anisotropic surface Dirac dispersion in a tetradymite material Ti2Te2P on the (001) plane of the Brillioun zone. …
We use the methods of topological quantum chemistry to explore the topology of phonons on time-reversal symmetric crystals with the structure of the planar honeycomb (layer group $p6/mmm$). This approach is not tied to a particular model of atomic vibrations, but is applied to the most general dynamical matrix constrained only by the symmetries of the system. We show that four distinct fragile topological phonon phases are generically possible. Truncating the dynamical matrix to third nearest neighbors yields a model that realizes the different phonon topologies, characterized by the existence…
Spin-split two-dimensional electronic states have been observed on ultrathin Sn(001) films grown on InSb(001) substrates. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) performed on these films revealed Dirac-cone-like linear dispersion around the $\barΓ$ point of surface Brillouin zone, suggesting nearly massless electrons belonging to 2D surface states. The states disperse across a bandgap between bulk-like quantum well states in the films. Moreover, both circular dichroism of ARPES and spin-resolved ARPES studies show helical spin polarization of the Dirac-cone-like surface states, sugge…
The doubling of massless Dirac fermions on two-dimensional lattices is theoretically studied. It has been shown that the doubling of massless Dirac fermions on a lattice with broken chiral symmetry is topologically protected even when the Dirac cone is tilted. This is due to the generalized chiral symmetry defined for lattice systems, where such models can be generated by a deformation of the chiral-symmetric lattice models. The present paper shows for two-band lattice models that this is a general way to produce systems with the generalized chiral symmetry in that such systems can always be t…
The Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BO) has proven effective for the accurate determination of chemical reactions, molecular dynamics and phonon frequencies in a wide range of metallic systems. Graphene, recently discovered in the free state, is a zero band-gap semiconductor, which becomes a metal if the Fermi energy is tuned applying a gate-voltage Vg. Graphene electrons near the Fermi energy have twodimensional massless dispersions, described by Dirac cones. Here we show that a change in Vg induces a stiffening of the Raman G peak (i.e. the zone-center E2g optical phonon), which cannot be de…
We propose a platform for robust and tunable nonreciprocal phonon transport based on arrays of optomechanical microtoroids. In our approach, time-reversal symmetry is broken by the interplay of photonic spin-orbit coupling, engineered using a state-of-the-art geometrical approach, and the optomechanical interaction. We demonstrate the topologically protected nature of this system by investigating its robustness to imperfections. This type of system could find application in phonon-based information storage and signal processing devices.
We study the topological property of the magnetoelastic excitation in non-collinear antiferromagnets. As a toy model, we consider the magnon-phonon coupling in a triangular antiferromagnet with a $120^\circ$ Nèel order. We find that in the presence of out-of-plane external magnetic field, the magnon-polaron bands, which arise from hybridization of magnons and phonons, can carry Chern number, even though the individual magnon and phonon bands are topologically trivial. Large Berry curvature is induced from the anti-crossing regions between the magnon and phonon bands, which renormalizes the the…
We show that electron-phonon interactions can alter the topological properties of Dirac insulators and semimetals, both at zero and nonzero temperature. Contrary to the common belief that increasing temperature always destabilizes topological phases, our results highlight instances in which phonons may lead to the appearance of topological surface states above a crossover temperature in a material that has a topologically trivial ground state.
The band structure of ABC-stacked N-layer graphene comprises topologically corresponding flat surface and gapped bulk subbands, as a consequence of the unique stacking configuration. In this paper, the bulk subbands are for the first times ever obtained for arbitrary N. A non-perturbative effective Hamiltonian closed in the bulk subspace is derived and used. The gapped bulk subbands are shown to evolve towards the zero energy with increasing N and in the infinite limit, they touch linearly along a circle. This outcome is a manifestation of the dimensional crossover to a three-dimensional Dirac…
Topological aspects of graphene are reviewed focusing on the massless Dirac fermions with/without magnetic field. Doubled Dirac cones of graphene are topologically protected by the chiral symmetry. The quantum Hall effect of the graphene is described by the Berry connection of a manybody state by the filled Landau levels which naturally possesses non-Abelian gauge structures. A generic principle of the topologically non trivial states as the bulk-edge correspondence is applied for graphene with/without magnetic field and explain some of the characteristic boundary phenomena of graphene.
The quantum anomalous Hall effect, an exotic topological state first theoretically predicted by Haldane and recently experimentally observed, has attracted enormous interest for low-power-consumption electronics. In this work, we derived a Schr{ö}dinger-like equation of phonons, where topology-related quantities, time reversal symmetry and its breaking can be naturally introduced similar as for electrons. Furthermore, we proposed a phononic analog of the Haldane model, which gives the novel quantum (anomalous) Hall-like phonon states characterized by one-way gapless edge modes immune to scatte…
Periodically driven systems can host so called anomalous topological phases, in which protected boundary states coexist with topologically trivial Floquet bulk bands. We introduce an anomalous version of reflection symmetry protected topological crystalline insulators, obtained as a stack of weakly-coupled two-dimensional layers. The system has tunable and robust surface Dirac cones even though the mirror Chern numbers of the Floquet bulk bands vanish. The number of surface Dirac cones is given by a new topological invariant determined from the scattering matrix of the system. Further, we find…
Efficient control of phonons is crucial to energy-information technology, but limited by the lacking of tunable degrees of freedom like charge or spin. Here we suggest to utilize crystalline symmetry-protected pseudospins as new quantum degrees of freedom to manipulate phonons. Remarkably, we reveal a duality between phonon pseudospins and electron spins by presenting Kramers-like degeneracy and pseudospin counterparts of spin-orbit coupling, which lays the foundation for "pseudospin phononics". Furthermore, we report two types of three-dimensional phononic topological insulators, which give t…
This study investigates the occurrence of acoustic topological edge states in a 2D phononic elastic waveguide due to a phenomenon that is the acoustic analogue of the quantum valley Hall effect. We show that a topological transition takes place between two lattices having broken space inversion symmetry due to the application of a tunable strain field. This condition leads to the formation of gapless edge states at the domain walls, as further illustrated by the analysis of the bulk-edge correspondence and of the associated topological invariants. Although time reversal symmetry is still intac…
Using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we probe the Landau levels of the topologically protected state of Sb2Te3(0001) after in-situ cleavage of a single crystal. Landau levels are visible for magnetic fields B > 2 T at energies, which confirm the Dirac type dispersion including the zeroth Landau level. We find different Dirac velocities for the lower and the upper part of the Dirac cone in reasonable agreement with previous density functional theory data. The Dirac point deduced from the zeroth Landau level shifts by about 40 meV between different areas of the sample indicatin…
A time-reversal invariant topological insulator occupying a Euclidean half-space determines a 'Quaternionic' self-adjoint Fredholm family. We show that the discrete spectrum data for such a family is geometrically encoded in a non-trivial 'Real' gerbe. The gerbe invariant, rather than a naïve counting of Dirac points, precisely captures how edge states completely fill up the bulk spectral gap in a topologically protected manner.
Phononic crystals and metamaterials take advantage of pre-designed geometrical structures to sculpt elastic waves, controlling their dispersion using different mechanisms. These mechanisms revolve mostly around Bragg scattering (BS), local resonances (LR) and inertial amplification (IA), which employ ad-hoc, often problem-specific geometries. Here, we use parametrized, spiraling unit cells as building blocks for designing various types of phononic materials. We focus on planar spirals that are easy to fabricate, yet give rise to the desirable complex dynamics. By simple modifications of the sp…
Dirac semimetals, the materials featured with discrete linearly crossing points (called Dirac points) between four bands, are critical states of topologically distinct phases. Such gapless topological states have been accomplished by a band-inversion mechanism, in which the Dirac points can be annihilated pairwise by perturbations without changing the symmetry of the system. Here, we report an experimental observation of Dirac points that are enforced completely by the crystal symmetry, using a nonsymmorphic three-dimensional phononic crystal. Intriguingly, our Dirac phononic crystal hosts fou…
By means of first-principles calculations and modeling analysis, we have predicted that the traditional 2D-graphene hosts the topological phononic Weyl-like points (PWs) and phononic nodal line (PNL) in its phonon spectrum. The phonon dispersion of graphene hosts three type-I PWs (both PW1 and PW2 at the BZ corners \emph{K} and \emph{K}', and PW3 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{K} line), one type-II PW4 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{M} line, and one PNL surrounding the centered $Γ$ point in the $q_{x,y}$ plane. The calculations further reveal that Berry curvatures are vanishingly zero throughout t…
We have investigated several strong spin-orbit coupling ternary chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series of compounds. Our first-principles calculations predict the low temperature rhombohedral ordered phase in TlBiTe2, TlBiSe2, and TlSbX2 (X=Te, Se, S) to be topologically Kane-Mele Z2 = -1 nontrivial. We identify the specific surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone through first-principles surface state computations. This termination minimizes effects of dangling bonds making it favorable for photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Our analysis predicts that thin films of thes…
We present a methodology to perform inverse analysis on reconfigurable topological insulators for flexural waves in plate-like structures. First the unit cell topology of a phononic plate is designed, which offers two-fold degeneracy in the band structure by topology optimization. In the second step, piezoelectric patches bonded over the substrate plate are connected to an external circuit and used appropriately to break space inversion symmetry. The space inversion symmetry breaking opens a topological band gap by mimicking quantum valley Hall effect. Numerical simulations demonstrate that th…
The gapless surface Dirac cone of time reversal invariant topological insulators is protected by time reversal symmetry due to the Kramers' theorem. Spin degree of freedom is usually required since Kramers' theorem only guarantees double degeneracy for spinful fermions, but not for spinless fermions. In this paper, we present an antiferromagnetic spinless model, which breaks time reversal symmetry. Similar to time reversal invariant topological insulators, this model possesses a topologically non-trivial phase with a single surface Dirac cone, which is protected by the combination of time reve…
Silicene is a monolayer of silicon atoms forming a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. We investigate the topological properties of a silicene superstructure generated by an external periodic potential. The superstructure is a quantum spin-Hall (QSH) insulator if it is topologically connected to silicene. It is remarkable that two inequivalent K and K' points in the silicene Brillouin zone are identified in certain superstructures. In such a case two Dirac cones coexist at the same Dirac point in the momentum space and they are hexagonally warped by the Coulomb interaction. We carry out a numer…
We examine the effect of acoustic phonon scattering on the conductivity of two-dimensional Dirac electrons. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the conductivity ($σ$) is calculated using the electron Green's function with damping by both the impurity ($Γ_0$) and phonon ($Γ_{\rm ph}$).For zero or small doping, on which the present Rapid Communication focuses, $σ(T)$ increases and becomes almost constant due to the competition between the Dirac electrons and the phonon scattering. Such strange behavior of $σ(T)$ is ascribed to an exotic mechanism of phonon scattering, whose momentum space is str…
We examine an effect of acoustic phonon scattering on an electric conductivity of single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$] (dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate) with a half-filled band by applying the previous calculation in a two-dimensional model with Dirac cone [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 98},161205 (2018)], where the electric transport by the impurity scattering exhibits the noticeable interplay of the Dirac cone and the phonon scattering, resulting in a maximum of the conductivity with increasing temperature. The conductor shows a nodal line semimetal where the band crossing of…
The topological quantum states in two-dimensional (2D) materials are fascinating subjects of research, which usually highlight electron-related systems. In this work, we present a recipe that leads to Dirac phonon states with quantized valley Berry phase in 2D hexagonal lattices by first-principles calculations. We show that candidates possessing the three-fold rotational symmetry at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone host valley Dirac phonons, which are guaranteed to remain intact with respect to perturbations. We identify that such special topological features populated by Dirac pho…
Topological band structures in electronic systems like topological insulators and semimetals give rise to highly unusual physical properties. Analogous topological effects have also been discussed in bosonic systems, but the novel phenomena typically occur only when the system is excited by finite-frequency probes. A mapping recently proposed by Kane and Lubensky [Nat. Phys. 10, 39 (2014)], however, establishes a closer correspondence. It relates the zero-frequency excitations of mechanical systems to topological zero modes of fermions that appear at the edges of an otherwise gapped system. He…
In two-dimensional insulators with time-reversal (TR) symmetry, a nonzero local Berry curvature of low-energy massive Dirac fermions can give rise to nontrivial spin and charge responses, even though the integral of the Berry curvature over all occupied states is zero. In this work, we present a new effect induced by the electronic Berry curvature. By studying electron-phonon interactions in BaMnSb$_2$, a prototype two-dimensional Dirac material possessing two TR-related massive Dirac cones, we find that the nonzero local Berry curvature of electrons can induce a phonon angular momentum. The d…
Topological defects with symmetry-breaking phase transitions have captured much attention. Vortex generated by topological defects exhibits exotic properties and its flow direction can be switched by altering the spin configurations. Contrary to electromagnetic and acoustic domains, the topological transport of elastic waves in periodic structures with topological defects is not well explored due to the mode conversion between the longitudinal and transverse modes. Here, we propose an elastic topological insulator with spontaneously broken symmetry based on the topological theory of defects an…
The discovery of monolayer graphene has initiated two fertile fields in modern condensed matter physics, Dirac semimetals and atomically-thin layered materials. When these trends meet again in transition metal compounds, which possess spin and orbital degrees of freedom and strong electron correlations, more exotic phenomena are expected to emerge in the cross section of topological states of matter and Mott physics. Here, we show by using ab initio calculations that a monolayer form of transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs), which has a honeycomb network of transition metal cations, may exh…
We have extended our new materials class search for the experimental realization of Z2 topological insulators from binary [Bi2Se3-class, Xia et.al., Nature Phys. 5, 398 (2009)] and the ternary [Half-Heusler class, Lin et.al., arXiv:1003.0155v1 (2010); arXiv:1003.2615v1 (2010)] series to non-Heusler Li-based ternary intermetallic series Li2M'X ($M'$=Cu, Ag, and Au, $X$=Sb and Bi) with CuHg2Ti-type structure. We discovered that the distorted-Li2AgSb is a lightweight compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state with Z2=-1 although the groundstate lies near a critical point, whereas the rel…
Topological phononic insulators are the counterpart of three-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators in phononic systems and, as such, their topological surfaces are characterized by Dirac cone-shaped gapless edge states arising as a consequence of a bulk-boundary correspondence. We propose a theoretical framework for the possible superconducting phase in these materials, where the attractive interaction between electrons is mediated by topological phonons in nontrivial boundary modes. Within the BCS limit, we develop a self-consistent two-band gap equation, whose solutions show that the supe…
