Dirac semimetals, the materials featured with discrete linearly crossing points (called Dirac points) between four bands, are critical states of topologically distinct phases. Such gapless topological states have been accomplished by a band-inversion mechanism, in which the Dirac points can be annihilated pairwise by perturbations without changing the symmetry of the system. Here, we report an experimental observation of Dirac points that are enforced completely by the crystal symmetry, using a nonsymmorphic three-dimensional phononic crystal. Intriguingly, our Dirac phononic crystal hosts four spiral topological surface states, in which the surface states of opposite helicities intersect gaplessly along certain momentum lines, as confirmed by our further surface measurements. The novel Dirac system may release new opportunities for studying the elusive (pseudo)relativistic physics, and also offer a unique prototype platform for acoustic applications.
We show that two-dimensional phononic crystals exhibit Dirac cone dispersion at k=0 by exploiting dipole and quadrupole accidental degeneracy. While the equi-frequency surface of Dirac cone modes is isotropic, such systems exhibit "super-anisotropy", meaning that only transverse waves are allowed along certain directions while only longitudinal waves are allowed along some other directions. Only one mode, not two, is allowed near the Dirac point, and only two effective parameters, not four, are needed to describe the dispersion. Effective medium theory finds that the phononic crystals have eff…
We describe the fine structure of Dirac states in HgTe/CdHgTe quantum wells of critical and close-to-critical thickness and demonstrate the formation of an anticrossing gap between the tips of the Dirac cones driven by interface inversion asymmetry. By combining symmetry analysis, atomistic calculations, and k-p theory with interface terms, we obtain a quantitative description of the energy spectrum and extract the interface mixing coefficient. The zero-magnetic-field splitting of Dirac cones can be experimentally revealed in studying magnetotransport phenomena, cyclotron resonance, Raman scat…
Topological semimetal states which are constrained by symmetries and give birth to innovative excitations are the frontiers of topological quantum matter. Nodal chains in which two nodal rings connect at one point were first discovered in non-symmorphic electronic systems and then generalized to symmorphic phononic systems. In this work, we identify a new class of planar nodal chains in non-symmorphic phononic systems, where the connecting rings lie in the same plane. The constituting nodal rings are protected by mirror symmetry, their intersection is guaranteed by the combination of time-reve…
We study the occurrence of symmetry-enforced topological band crossings in tetragonal crystals with strong spin-orbit coupling. By computing the momentum dependence of the symmetry eigenvalues and the global band topology in the entire Brillouin zone, we determine all symmetry-enforced band crossings in tetragonal space groups. In particular, we classify all Dirac and Weyl degeneracies on points, lines, and planes, and find a rich variety of topological degeneracies. This includes, among others, double Weyl points, fourfold-double Weyl points, fourfold-quadruple Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nod…
Topological metamaterials have robust properties engineered from their macroscopic arrangement, rather than their microscopic constituency. They can be designed by starting from Dirac metamaterials with either symmetry-enforced or accidental degeneracy. The latter case provides greater flexibility in the design of topological switches, waveguides, and cloaking devices, because a large number of tuning parameters can be used to break the degeneracy and induce a topological phase. However, the design of a topological logic element--a switch that can be controlled by the output of a separate swit…
While "Dirac cone" dispersions can only be meaningfully defined in two dimensional (2D) systems, the notion of a Dirac point can be extended to three dimensional (3D) classical wave systems. We show that a simple cubic photonic crystal composing of core-shell spheres exhibits a 3D Dirac point at the center of the Brillouin zone at a finite frequency. Using effective medium theory, we can map our structure to a zero refractive index material in which the effective permittivity and permeability are simultaneously zero at the Dirac point frequency. The Dirac point is six-fold degenerate and is fo…
Topological phonons in crystalline materials have been attracting great interest. However, most cases studied so far are direct generalizations of the topological states from electronic systems. Here, we reveal a novel class of topological phonons -- the symmetry-enforced nodal-chain phonons, which manifest features unique for phononic systems. We show that with $D_{2d}$ little co-group at a non-time-reversal-invariant-momentum point, the phononic nodal chain is guaranteed to exist owing to the vector basis symmetry of phonons, which is a unique character distinct from electronic and other sys…
Magnetism, coupled with nontrivial band topology, can bring about many interesting and exotic phenomena, so that magnetic topological materials have attracted persistent research interest. However, compared with non-magnetic topological materials (TMs), the magnetic TMs are less studied, since their magnetic structures and topological phase transitions are usually complex and the first-principles predictions are usually sensitive on the effect of Coulomb interaction. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of XFe4Ge2 (X = Y, Lu) and Mn3Pt, and find these materials to be filling-…
We present a lumped model for the rotational modes induced by the rotational motion of individual scatterers in two-dimensional phononic crystals comprised of square arrays of solid cylindrical scatterers in solid hosts. The model provides a physical interpretation of the origin of the rotational modes, reveals the important role played by the rotational motion in the band structure, and reproduces the dispersion relations. The model increases the possibilities of wave manipulation in phononic crystals. In particular, expressions, derived from the model, for eigen-frequencies at high symmetry …
Non-symmorphic symmetries protect Dirac line nodes in square net materials. This phenomenon has been most prominently observed in ZrSiS. Here, we systematically study the symmetry-protected nodal fermions that result from different ways of embedding the square net into a larger unit cell. Surprisingly, we find that a nonsymmorphic space group is not a necessary condition for a filling enforced semimetal: symmorphic space groups can also host nodal fermions that are enforced by band folding and electron count, that is, a combination of a particular structural motif combined with electron fillin…
Topological phononic states, facilitating acoustic unique transports immunizing to defects and disorders, have significantly revolutionized our scientific cognition of acoustic wave systems. Up to now, the theoretical and experimental demonstrations of topologically protected one-way transports with pseudospin states in a phononic crystal beyond the graphene lattice with C6v symmetry are still unexploited. Furthermore, the tunable topological states, in form of robust reconfigurable acoustic pathways, have been evaded in the topological phononic insulators. Here, we realize a topological phase…
The concept of topological energy bands and their manifestations have been demonstrated in condensed matter systems as a fantastic paradigm toward unprecedented physical phenomena and properties that are robust against disorders. Recent years, this paradigm was extended to phononic metamaterials (including mechanical and acoustic metamaterials), giving rise to the discovery of remarkable phenomena that were not observed elsewhere thanks to the extraordinary controllability and tunability of phononic metamaterials as well as versatile measuring techniques. These phenomena include, but not limit…
In spinful electronic systems, time-reversal symmetry makes that all Kramers pairs at the time-reversal-invariant momenta are Weyl points (WPs) in chiral crystals. Here, we find that such symmetry-enforced WPs can also emerge in bosonic systems ($e.g.$ phonons and photons) due to nonsymmorphic symmetries. We demonstrate that for some nonsymmorphic chiral space groups, several high-symmetry $k$-points can host $only$ WPs in the phononic systems, dubbed symmetry-enforced Weyl phonons (SEWPs). The SEWPs, enumerated in Table I, are pinned at the boundary of the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zon…
In parallel to electronic systems, the concept of topology has been extended to phonons, which has led to the birth of topological phonons. Very recently, nodal point phonons, nodal line phonons, and nodal surface phonons have been proposed, and a handful of candidate materials have been predicted in solid-state materials. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we propose that hourglass Weyl nodal line (HWNL) phonons and Dirac nodal line (DNL) phonons coexist in the phonon dispersion of a single material, KCuS, with a $Pnma$-type structure. The HWNLs and DN…
Phonons are an ideal platform for realizing stable spinless two-dimensional (2D) Dirac points because they have a bosonic nature and hard-to-break time-reversal symmetry. It should be noted that the twofold degenerate nodal points in the phonon dispersions of almost all reported 2D materials are misclassified as 'Dirac points' owing to a historical issue. The correct name for these twofold degenerate nodal points should be 'Weyl' because 2D phononic systems are essentially spinless and because each twofold degenerate point is described by a Weyl model in two dimensions. To date, there have bee…
Moiré lattices which consist of parallel but staggered periodic lattices have been extensively explored due to their salient physical properties, such as van Hove singularities[1, 2], commensurable incommensurable transitions[3], non-Abelian gauge potentials[4], fractional quantum Hall effects[5-7], van der Waals interfaces[8, 9] and unconventional superconductivity[10, 11]. However, there are limited demonstrations of such concepts for classical wave systems. Here, we realized gauge fields in one-dimensional Moiré phononic lattices consisting of two superimposed periodic patterns which mismat…
We identify all symmetry-enforced band crossings in nonmagnetic orthorhombic crystals with and without spin-orbit coupling and discuss their topological properties. We find that orthorhombic crystals can host a large number of different band degeneracies, including movable Weyl and Dirac points with hourglass dispersions, fourfold double Weyl points, Weyl and Dirac nodal lines, almost movable nodal lines, nodal chains, and topological nodal planes. Interestingly, spin-orbit coupled materials in the space groups 18, 36, 44, 45, and 46 can have band pairs with only two Weyl points in the entire …
Previously known three-dimensional Dirac semimetals (DSs) occur in two types -- topological DSs and nonsymmorphic DSs. Here we present a novel three-dimensional DS that exhibits both features of the topological and nonsymmorphic DSs. We introduce a minimal tight-binding model for the space group 100 that describes a layered crystal made of two-dimensional planes in the $p4g$ wallpaper group. Using this model, we demonstrate that double glide-mirrors allow a noncentrosymmetric three-dimensional DS that hosts both symmetry-enforced Dirac points at time-reversal invariant momenta and twofold-dege…
Topological phononic insulators are the counterpart of three-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators in phononic systems and, as such, their topological surfaces are characterized by Dirac cone-shaped gapless edge states arising as a consequence of a bulk-boundary correspondence. We propose a theoretical framework for the possible superconducting phase in these materials, where the attractive interaction between electrons is mediated by topological phonons in nontrivial boundary modes. Within the BCS limit, we develop a self-consistent two-band gap equation, whose solutions show that the supe…
Dirac semimetals associated with bulk Dirac fermions are well-known in topological electronic systems. In sharp contrast, three-dimensional (3D) Dirac phonons in crystalline solids are still unavailable. Here we perform symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations to systematically investigate 3D Dirac phonons in all space groups with inversion symmetry. The results show that there are two categories of 3D Dirac phonons depending on their protection mechanisms and positions in momentum space. The first category originates from the four-dimensional irreducible representations at the hig…
Materials with triply-degenerate nodal points in their low-energy electronic spectrum produce crystalline-symmetry-enforced three-fold fermions, which conceptually lie between the two-fold Weyl and four-fold Dirac fermions. Here we show how a silver-based Dirac semimetal BaAgAs realizes three-fold fermions through our first-principles calculations combined with a low-energy effective $\mathbf{k.p}$ model Hamiltonian analysis. BaAgAs is shown to harbor triply-degenerate nodal points, which lie on its $C_{3}$ rotation axis, and are protected by the $C_{6v}$($C_2\otimes C_{3v}$) point-group symme…

Three-, four-, and six-fold excitations have significantly extended the subjects of condensed matter physics. There is an urgent need for a realistic material that can have coexisting 3-, 4-, and 6-fold excitations. However, these materials are uncommon because these excitations in electronic systems are usually broken by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and normally far from the Fermi level. Unlike the case in electronic systems, the phonon systems with negligible SOC effect, not constrained by the Pauli exclusion principle, provide a feasible platform to realize these excitations in a wide frequenc…
Topologically protected one-way transportation of sound, mimicking the topological properties of the condensed matter, has received greatly attentions. Thus far, the topological phases and the topological edge states of sound are yielded in the vicinity of the Dirac cones fixed at the high symmetric points of the Brillouin zone. Here, we present a new type of the phononic topological insulator in the square lattice with position-variational Dirac cones along the high symmetric lines. The emergence of such Dirac cones, characterized by the vortex structure in a momentum space, is attributed to …
Compared to inversion-symmetric systems, emerging bulk Dirac point (DP) in noncentrosymmetric systems is much harder and its symmetry protection mechanism is poorly understood. In this work, we propose that orthogonal glide symmetries can protect two distinct types of bulk anisotropic DPs. One is the ordinary anisotropic DP that is doubly degenerate only along one invariant axis, which is resulted from symmetry-protected accidental band crossing. The other one is a symmetry-enforced DP fixed at a non-time-reversal-invariant point, which is doubly degenerate at three orthogonal directions. This…
Self-dual structures whose dual counterparts are themselves possess unique hidden symmetry, beyond the description of classical spatial symmetry groups. Here we propose a strategy based on { a nematic monolayer of} attractive half-cylindrical colloids to self-assemble these exotic structures. { This system can be seen as a 2D system of semi-disks.} By using Monte Carlo simulations, we discover two isostatic self-dual crystals, i.e., an unreported crystal with pmg {space-group} symmetry and the twisted Kagome crystal. For the pmg crystal approaching the critical point, we find the double degene…
Dirac semimetals (DSMs) are three dimensional analogue to graphene with symmety enforced bulk Dirac nodes. Among various DSMs, ZrSiS has been attracting more interests recently, due to its three dimensional Dirac nodal line protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry. It actually belongs to a large family of isostructural compounds with unique quantum phenomenon. Here we present a comprehensive study of the first principle calculation, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, and scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiments on ZrGeTe, a member of the ZrSiS family with str…

Two-dimensional Dirac semimetals have attracted much attention because of their linear energy dispersion and non-trivial Berry phase. Graphene-like 2D Dirac materials are gapless only within certain approximations, e.g., if spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is neglected. It has recently been reported that materials with nonsymmorphic crystal lattice possess symmetry-enforced Dirac-like band dispersion around certain high-symmetry momenta even in the presence of SOC. Here we calculate the optical absorption coefficient of nonsymmorphic semimetals, such as $α$-bismuthene, which hosts two anisotropic Dir…
A lattice symmetry, if being nonsymmorphic, is defined by combining a point group symmetry with a fractional lattice translation that cannot be removed by changing the lattice origin. Nonsymmorphic symmetry has a substantial influence on both the connectivity and topological properties of electronic band structures in solid-state quantum materials. In this article, we review how nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetries can drive and further protect the emergence of exotic fermionic quasiparticles, including Dirac, Möbius and hourglass fermions, that manifest as the defining energy band signatures …

The honeycomb lattice sets the basic arena for numerous ideas to implement electronic, photonic, or phononic topological bands in (meta-)materials. Novel opportunities to manipulate Dirac electrons in graphene through band engineering arise from superlattice potentials as induced by a substrate such as hexagonal boron-nitride. Making use of the general form of a weak substrate potential as dictated by symmetry, we analytically derive the low-energy minibands of the superstructure, including a characteristic 1.5 Dirac cone deriving from a three-band crossing at the Brillouin zone edge. Assuming…
We study three-dimensional nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) with magnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit interaction. Two distinct classes of magnetic NLSMs are proposed. The first class is band-inversion NLSM where the accidental line node is induced by band inversion and locally protected by glide mirror plane and the combined time-reversal and inversion symmetries. This can be viewed as a trivial stacking of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals. The second class is essential NLSM where the nodal features are filling-enforced by specific magnetic symmetry group. We further pro…
In some Dirac systems with time-reversal (T) and glide (G) symmetries, multihelicoid surface states (MHSSs) appear, as discussed in various systems such as electronic and photonic ones. However, the topological nature and the conditions for the appearance of the MHSSs have not been understood. Here we show that MHSSs result from bulk-surface correspondence for the $Z_2$ monopole charge Q, which cannot be defined as a local quantity associated with the Dirac point, unlike the Z monopole charge characterizing Weyl points. The previously known formula of Q turns out to be non-gauge-invariant and …
Topological semimetal, hosting spin-1 Weyl point beyond Dirac and Weyl points, has attracted a great deal of attention. However, the spin-1 Weyl semimetal, which possesses exclusively the spin-1 Weyl points in a clean frequency window, without shadowed by any other nodal points, is yet to be discovered. Here, we report for the first time a spin-1 Weyl semimetal in a phononic crystal. Its spin-1 Weyl points, touched by two linear dispersions and an additional flat band, carry monopole charges (-2,0,2) or (2,0,-2) for the three bands from bottom to top, and result in double Fermi arcs existing b…
Structural-property relationship, the connection between materials' structures and their properties, is central to the materials research. Especially at reduced dimensions, novel structural motifs often generate unique physical properties.Motivated by a recent work reporting a novel half auxetic effect in monolayer PdB4 with a hypercoordinated structure, here, we extensively explore similar 2D transition metal boride structures MB4 with M covering 3d and 4d elements. Our investigation screens out one stable candidate, the monolayer RhB4. We find that monolayer RhB4 also shows half auxeticity, i…
The protected electron states at the boundaries or on the surfaces of topological insulators (TIs) have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental investigations. Such states are enforced by very strong spin-orbit interaction in solids composed of heavy elements. Here, we study the composite particles -- chiral excitons -- formed by the Coulomb attraction between electrons and holes residing on the surface of an archetypical three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Photoluminescence (PL) emission arising due to recombination of excitons in conventional semicond…
Beryllium was recently discovered to harbor a Dirac nodal line (DNL) in its bulk phase and the DNL-induced non-trivial drumhead-like surface states (DNSSs) on its (0001) surface, rationalizing several already-existing historic puzzles [Phys. Rev. Lett., \textbf{117}, 096401 (2016)]. However, to date the underlying mechanism, as to why its (0001) surface exhibits an anomalously large electron-phonon coupling effect ($λ_{e-ph}^s$ $\approx$ 1.0), remains unresolved. Here, by means of first-principles calculations we have evidenced that the coupling of the DNSSs with the phononic states mainly con…
The Fermi surface properties of a nontrivial system YSi is investigated by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements combined with the first-principle calculations. Three main frequencies ($α$, $β$, $γ$) are probed up to $14$~T magnetic field in dHvA oscillations. The $α$-branch corresponding to $21$~T frequency possesses non-trivial topological character with $π$ Berry phase and a linear dispersion along $Γ$ to $Z$ direction with a small effective mass of $0.069~m_e$ with second-lowest Landau-level up to $14$~T. For $B~\parallel$~[010] direction, the 295~T frequency exhibits non-triv…
We start by describing a symmetry enforced nodal line semi-metal (NLSM) in the 2D flat form of honeycomb Group - V and its non trivial thermo-electric response. We will then proceed to show that, upon buckling, the system undergoes its dirac-merging phase transitions. Further buckling leads to these unpinned Dirac cones annihilating in pairs at two distinct critical angle leading to a second topological phase transition to an insulating state. We then show that this seemingly innocuous insulating state is indeed a weak topological crystalline insulator. Furthermore, upon closer look, this insu…

Topological states of electrons and photons have attracted significant interest recently. Topological mechanical states also being actively explored, have been limited to macroscopic systems of kHz frequency. The discovery of topological phonons of atomic vibrations at THz frequency can provide a new venue for studying heat transfer, phonon scattering and electron-phonon interaction. Here, we employed ab initio calculations to identify a class of noncentrosymmetric materials of $M$Si ($M$=Fe,Co,Mn,Re,Ru) having double Weyl points in both their acoustic and optical phonon spectra. They exhibit …
