Monolayer 1T'-WTe2 is a quantum spin Hall insulator with a gapped bulk and gapless helical edge states persisting to temperatures around 100 K. Recent studies have revealed a topological-to-trivial phase transition as well the emergence of an unconventional, potentially topological superconducting state upon tuning the carrier concentration with gating. However, despite extensive studies, the effects of gating on the band structure and the helical edge states have not yet been established. In this work we present a combined low-temperature STM and first principles study of back-gated monolayer 1T'-WTe2 films grown on graphene. Consistent with a quantum spin Hall system, the films show well-defined bulk gaps and clear edge states that span the gap. By directly measuring the density of states with STM spectroscopy, we show that the bulk band gap magnitude shows substantial changes with applied gate voltage, which is contrary to the naïve expectation that a gate would rigidly shift the bands relative to the Fermi level. To explain our data, we carry out density functional theory and model Hamiltonian calculations which show that a gate electric field causes doping and inversion symmetry breaking which polarizes and spin-splits the bulk bands. Interestingly, the calculated spin splitting from the effective Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling can be in the tens of meV for the electric fields in the experiment, which may be useful for spintronics applications. Our work reveals the strong effect of electric fields on the bulk band structure of monolayer 1T'-WTe2, which will play a critical role in our understanding of gate-induced phenomena in this system.
We evidence the possibility for coherent electrical manipulation of the spin orientation of topologically protected edge states in a low-symmetry quantum spin Hall insulator. By using a combination of ab-initio simulations, symmetry-based modeling, and large-scale calculations of the spin Hall conductivity, it is shown that small electric fields can efficiently vary the spin textures of edge currents in monolayer 1T'-WTe2 by up to a 90-degree spin rotation, without jeopardizing their topological character. These findings suggest a new kind of gate-controllable spin-based device, topologically …
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
In this work, the electrical properties of monolayer InSb in the presence of biaxial strain using density functional theory are investigated. Here, we first explore the band structure of InSb with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) consideration. The electron and hole effective mass modify with SOC consideration. The electron and hole effective masses lowered two and ten times, respectively. The location of valleys in conduction and valence band for various strains are explored, and the corresponding effective masses are reported. A lower effective mass is obtained for both electron and hol…
Two-dimensional (2D) metal-diboride ZrB2 monolayers was predicted theoretically as a stable new electronic material [A. Lopez-Bezanilla, Phys. Rev. Mater., 2018, 2, 011002 (R)]. Here, we investigate its electronic transport properties along the zigzag (z-ZrB2) and armchair (a-ZrB2) directions, using the density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function methods. Under low biases, the 2D ZrB2 shows a similar electrical transport along zigzag and armchair directions as electric current propagates mostly via the metallic Zr-Zr bonds. However, it shows an electrical anistropy under hig…
In this work, the electrical and spin properties of monolayer MoSi2X4 (X= N, P, As, and Sb) under vertical strain are investigated. The band structures state that MoSi2N4 is an indirect semiconductor, whereas other compounds are direct semiconductors. The vertical strain has been selected to modify the electrical properties. The bandgap shows a maximum and decreases for both tensile and compressive strains. The valence band at K-point displays a large spin-splitting, whereas the conduction band has a negligible splitting. On the other hand, the second conduction band has a large spin-splitting…
We investigate the impact of mechanical strains and a perpendicular electric field on the electronic and magnetic ground-state properties of two-dimensional monolayer CrI$_3$ using density functional theory. We propose a minimal spin model Hamiltonian, consisting of symmetric isotropic exchange interactions, magnetic anisotropy energy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, to capture most pertinent magnetic properties of the system. We compute the mechanical strain and electric field dependence of various spin-spin interactions. Our results show that both the amplitudes and signs of the…
Optical excitations of monolayer bismuthene present the rich and unique absorption spectra. The threshold frequency is not equal to an indirect energy gap, and it becomes zero under the critical electric field. The frequency, number, intensity and form of the absorption structures are dramatically changed by the external field. The prominent peaks and the observable shoulders, respectively, arise from the constant-energy loop and the band-edge states of parabolic dispersions. These directly reflect the unusual electronic properties, being very different from those in monolayer graphene.
The quantum spin Hall (QSH) state was recently demonstrated in monolayers of the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T'-WTe$_2$ and is characterized by a band gap in the two-dimensional (2D) interior and helical one-dimensional (1D) edge states. Inducing superconductivity in the helical edge states would result in a 1D topological superconductor, a highly sought-after state of matter. In the present study, we use a novel dry-transfer flip technique to place atomically-thin layers of WTe$_2$ on a van der Waals superconductor, NbSe$_2$. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS)…
We investigate the electric response of chiral phonons on the low-buckled group-IVA monolayers by performing first-principles calculations. The vertical electric field breaks the degeneracy of phonon modes at high-symmetry $\pm K$ points of the phonon Brillouin zone, and the size of the phononic gap is proportional to the strength of the electric field. The gapped phonon modes at $\pm K$ possess chiralities with considerable phonon circular polarizations and discrete phonon pseudoangular momenta. The chiralities of phonons are robust against the variation of the field strength, but reversed by…
Using density functional theory calculations and the Greens's function formalism, we report the existence of magnetic edge states with a non-collinear spin texture present on different edges of the 1T' phase of the three monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs): MoS$_2$, MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$. The magnetic states are gapless and accompanied by a spontaneous breaking of the time-reversal symmetry. This may have an impact on the prospects of utilizing WTe$_2$ as a quantum spin Hall insulator. It has previously been suggested that the topologically protected edge states of the 1T' TMDs co…
A two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI) exhibits the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, in which topologically protected spin-polarized conducting channels exist at the sample edges. Experimental signatures of the QSH effect have recently been reported for the first time in an atomically thin material, monolayer WTe2. Electrical transport measurements on exfoliated samples and scanning tunneling spectroscopy on epitaxially grown monolayer islands signal the existence of edge modes with conductance approaching the quantized value. Here, we directly image the local conductivity of monolay…
In a pristine monolayer graphene subjected to a constant electric field along the layer, the Bloch oscillation of an electron is studied in a simple and efficient way. By using the electronic dispersion relation, the formula of a semi-classical velocity is derived analytically, and then many aspects of Bloch oscillation, such as its frequency, amplitude, as well as the direction of the oscillation, are investigated. It is interesting to find that the electric field affects the component of motion, which is non-collinear with electric field, and leads the particle to be accelerated or oscillate…
Evidence for the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect has been reported in several experimental systems in the form of approximately quantized edge conductance. However, the most fundamental feature of the QSH effect, spin-momentum locking in the edge channels, has never been demonstrated experimentally. Here, we report clear evidence for spin-momentum locking in the edge channels of monolayer WTe2, thought to be a two-dimensional topological insulator (2D TI). We observe that the edge conductance is controlled by the component of an applied magnetic field perpendicular to a particular axis, which w…
The integration of diverse electronic phenomena, such as magnetism and nontrivial topology, into a single system is normally studied either by seeking materials that contain both ingredients, or by layered growth of contrasting materials. The ability to simply stack very different two dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials in intimate contact permits a different approach. Here we use this approach to couple the helical edges states in a 2D topological insulator, monolayer WTe2, to a 2D layered antiferromagnet, CrI3. We find that the edge conductance is sensitive to the magnetization state of…
We develop an analytical theory for edge states in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides based on a general boundary condition for a two-band ${\bf kp}$-Hamiltonian in case of uncoupled valleys. Taking into account {\it edge} spin-orbit interaction we reveal that edge states, in general, have linear dispersion that is determined by three real phenomenological parameters in the boundary condition. In absence of the edge spin-orbit interaction, edge states are described by a single real parameter whose sign determines whether their spectra intersect the bulk gap or not. In the former ca…
The topological edge states of two-dimensional topological insulators with large energy gap furnish ideal conduction channels for dissipationless current transport. Transition metal tellurides XTe5 (X=Zr, Hf) are theoretically predicted to be large-gap two-dimensional topological insulators and the experimental observations of their bulk insulating gap and in-gap edge states have been reported, but the topological nature of these edge states still remains to be further elucidated. Here, we report our low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study on single crystals of HfTe5. …
Electrical control of the orbital degrees of freedom is an important area of research in the emerging field of "orbitronics." Orbital {\it gyrotropic} magneto-electric effect (OGME) is the generation of an orbital magnetization in a nonmagnetic metal by an applied electric field. Here, we show that strain induces a large GME in the monolayer Nb$X_2$ ($X =$ S, Se) normal to the plane, primarily driven by the orbital moments of the Bloch bands as opposed to the conventional spin magnetization, without any need for spin-orbit coupling. The key physics is captured within an effective two-band vall…
The complex nature of filling factor $ν$=0 of monolayer graphene is studied in magnetotransport experiments. As function of perpendicular magnetic field a metal-insulator transition is observed, which is attributed to disorder-induced Landau level broadening in the canted antiferromagnetic phase. In the metallic regime a separation of the zeroth Landau level appears and signs of the quantum spin Hall effect are seen near $ν$=0. In addition to local transport, nonlocal transport experiments show results being consistent with helical edge transport.
We report magneto-optical spectroscopy of gated monolayer MoS$_2$ in high magnetic fields up to 28T and obtain new insights on the many-body interaction of neutral and charged excitons with the resident charges of distinct spin and valley texture. For neutral excitons at low electron doping, we observe a nonlinear valley Zeeman shift due to dipolar spin-interactions that depends sensitively on the local carrier concentration. As the Fermi energy increases to dominate over the other relevant energy scales in the system, the magneto-optical response depends on the occupation of the fully spin-po…
Achieving combination of spin and valley polarized states with topological insulating phase is pregnant to promote the fantastic integration of topological physics, spintronics and valleytronics. In this work, a spin-valley-coupled quantum spin Hall insulator (svc-QSHI) is predicted in Janus monolayer $\mathrm{CSb_{1.5}Bi_{1.5}}$ with dynamic, mechanical and thermal stabilities. The inequivalent valleys have opposite Berry curvature and spin moment, which can produce a spin-valley Hall effect. In the center of Brillouin zone, a Rashba-type spin splitting can be observed due to missing horizont…
We study tunable polaritons in monolayers of silicene, germanene, and stanene (Xenes) via an external electric field in an open optical microcavity whose length can be adjusted. An external electric field applied perpendicular to the plane of the Xene monolayer simultaneously changes the band gap and the exciton binding energy, while the variable length of the open microcavity allows one to keep the exciton and cavity photon modes in resonance. First, the Schrödinger equation for an electron and hole in an Xene monolayer is solved, yielding the eigenergies and eigenfunctions of the exciton as …
We theoretically study a single-electron spin-valley qubit in an electrostatically defined quantum dot in a transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer, focusing on the example of MoS$_2$. Coupling of the qubit basis states for coherent control is challenging, as it requires a simultaneous flip of spin and valley. Here, we show that a tilted magnetic field together with a short-range impurity, such as a vacancy, a substitutional defect, or an adatom, can give rise to a coupling between the qubit basis states. This mechanism renders the in-plane $g$-factor nonzero, and allows to control the qubit…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures with flat electronic bands have recently emerged as a platform for realizing correlated and topological states with an extraordinary degree of control and tunability. In graphene-based moiré heterostructures, the correlated phase diagram and band topology depend strongly on the number of graphene layers, their relative stacking arrangement, and details of the external environment from the encapsulating crystals. Here, we report that the system of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) hosts a variety of correlated metallic and insulating states, as wel…
