Using the ambitwistor string, we compute tree-level celestial amplitudes for biadjoint scalars, Yang-Mills and gravity to all multiplicities. They are presented in compact CHY-like formulas with operator-valued scattering equations and numerators acting on a generalized hypergeometric function. With these we extend the celestial double copy to tree-level amplitudes with arbitrary number of external states. We also show how color-kinematics duality is implemented in celestial amplitudes and its interpretation in terms of a generalized twisted cohomology theory.
We compute the operator product expansions of gluons and gravitons in celestial CFT from the worldsheet OPE of vertex operators of four-dimensional ambitwistor string theories. Remarkably, the worldsheet OPE localizes on the short-distance singularity between vertex operator insertions which in turn coincides with the OPE limit of operator insertions on the celestial sphere. The worldsheet CFT dynamically produces known celestial OPE coefficients -- as well as infinite towers of SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ descendant contributions to the celestial OPE -- without any truncations or approximations. We ob…
Celestial operator product expansions (OPEs) arise from the collinear limit of scattering amplitudes and play a vital role in celestial holography. In this paper, we derive the celestial OPEs of massless fields in string theory from the worldsheet. By studying the worldsheet OPEs of vertex operators in worldsheet CFT and further examining their behaviors in the collinear limit, we find that new vertex operators for the massless fields in string theory are generated and become dominant in the collinear limit. Mellin transforming to the conformal basis yields exactly the celestial OPEs in celest…
Using the ambitwistor string, we complete the list of celestial OPE coefficients for supersymmetric theories. This uses the ambitwistor string worldsheet CFT to dynamically generate the OPE coefficients for maximally supersymmetric gauge theory, gravity and Einstein-Yang-Mills theories, including all helicity and orientation configurations. This extends previous purely bosonic results to include supersymmetry and provides explicit formulas which are, to the best of our knowledge, not in the literature. We also examine how the supersymmetric infinite dimensional soft algebras behave compared to…
This paper describes the motion of a classical Nambu-Goto string in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime in terms of two `celestial' fields on the worldsheet. The fields correspond to retarded and advanced boundary times at which null rays emanating from the string reach the boundary. The formalism allows for a simple derivation of the Schwarzian action for near-AdS2 embeddings.
The analytic structures of scattering amplitudes in gauge theory and gravity are examined on the celestial sphere. The celestial amplitudes in the two theories - computed by employing a regulated Mellin transform - can be compared at low multiplicity. It is established by direct computation that up to five external particles, the double copy relations of Kawai, Lewellen and Tye continue to hold identically, modulo certain multiplicative factors which are explicitly determined. Supersymmetric representations of the amplitudes are utilized throughout, manifesting the double copy structure betwee…
Celestial amplitudes which use conformal primary wavefunctions rather than plane waves as external states offer a novel opportunity to study properties of amplitudes with manifest conformal covariance and give insight into a potential holographic celestial CFT at the null boundary of asymptotically flat space. Since translation invariance is obscured in the conformal basis, features of amplitudes that heavily rely on it appear to be lost. Among these are the remarkable relations between gauge theory and gravity amplitudes known as the double copy. Nevertheless, properties of amplitudes reflect…
In this final part of a series of three papers, we will assemble supersymmetric expressions for one-loop correlators in pure-spinor superspace that are BRST invariant, local, and single valued. A key driving force in this construction is the generalization of a so far unnoticed property at tree level; the correlators have the symmetry structure akin to Lie polynomials. One-loop correlators up to seven points are presented in a variety of representations manifesting different subsets of their defining properties. These expressions are related via identities obeyed by the kinematic superfields a…
Scattering amplitudes in $d+2$ dimensions can be expressed in terms of a conformal basis, for which the S-matrix behaves as a CFT correlation function on the celestial $d$-sphere. We explain how compact expressions for the full tree-level S-matrix of gauge theory, gravity and other QFTs extend to this conformal basis, and are easily derived from ambitwistor strings. Using these formulae and their worldsheet origins, we prove various tree-level 'conformal soft theorems' in gauge theory and gravity in any dimension; these arise from limits where the scaling dimension of an external state in the …
We recast the soft $S$-matrices on the celestial sphere as correlation functions of certain $2$-dimensional models of topological defects. In pointing out the double copy structure between the soft photon and soft graviton cases, we arrive at a putative classical double copy between the corresponding topological models and a rederivation of gauge invariance and the equivalence principle as Ward identities of the $2$-dimensional theories.
Starting with Witten's twistor string, chiral string theories have emerged that describe field theory amplitudes without the towers of massive states of conventional strings. These models are known as ambitwistor strings due to their target space; the space of complexified null geodesics, also called ambitwistor space. Correlators in these string theories directly yield compact formulae for tree-level amplitudes and loop integrands, in the form of worldsheet integrals fully localized on solutions to constraints known as the scattering equations. In this chapter, we discuss two incarnations of …
We present a general construction of two types of differential forms, based on any $(n{-}3)$-dimensional subspace in the kinematic space of $n$ massless particles. The first type is the so-called projective, scattering forms in kinematic space, while the second is defined in the moduli space of $n$-punctured Riemann spheres which we call worldsheet forms. We show that the pushforward of worldsheet forms, by summing over solutions of scattering equations, gives the corresponding scattering forms, which generalizes the results of [1711.09102]. The pullback of scattering forms to subspaces can ha…
In this paper we continue our study of the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes from the point of view of celestial holography. In arXiv:2008.04330 we showed that the celestial OPE of two gravitons in the MHV sector can be written as a linear combination of $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and supertranslation descendants. In this note we show that the OPE is in fact manifestly invariant under the infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra as is expected for a $2$-D CFT. This is consistent with the conjecture that the holographic dual in $4$-D asymptotically flat space time is …
Ambitwistor-strings are chiral strings whose targets are spaces of complex massless particles, and whose correlation functions directly lead to simple, compact formulae for scattering amplitudes and loop integrands for massless gauge and gravity theories. This article extends this framework to worldsheet models for massive particles in 4d, obtained via a symmetry reduction of a higher dimensional massless model. The target space of the resulting models turns out to be the phase space of 4d massive particles in a twistorial representation, and so the worldsheet theory agrees with the two-twisto…
We consider $D$-dimensional amplitudes in $R^2$ gravities (conformal gravity in $D=4$) and in the recently introduced $(DF)^2$ gauge theory, from the perspective of the CHY formulae and ambitwistor string theory. These theories are related through the BCJ double-copy construction, and the $(DF)^2$ gauge theory obeys color-kinematics duality. We work out the worldsheet details of these theories and show that they admit a formulation as integrals on the support of the scattering equations, or alternatively, as ambitwistor string theories. For gravity, this generalizes the work done by Berkovits …
