Subdwarf B stars are core-helium burning stars located on the extreme horizontal branch. Extensive mass loss on the red giant branch is necessary to form them. It has been proposed that substellar companions could lead to the required mass-loss when they are engulfed in the envelope of the red giant star. J08205+0008 was the first example of a hot subdwarf star with a close, substellar companion candidate to be found. Here we perform an in-depth re-analysis of this important system with much higher quality data allowing additional analysis methods. From the higher resolution spectra obtained with ESO-VLT/XSHOOTER we derive the chemical abundances of the hot subdwarf as well as its rotational velocity. Using the { it Gaia} parallax and a fit to the spectral energy distribution in the secondary eclipse, tight constraints to the radius of the hot subdwarf are derived. From a long-term photometric campaign we detected a significant period decrease of $-3.2(8)\cdot 10^{-12} \,\rm dd^{-1}$. This can be explained by the non-synchronised hot subdwarf star being spun up by tidal interactions forcing it to become synchronised. From the rate of period decrease we could derive the synchronisation timescale to be 4 Myr, much smaller than the lifetime on EHB. By combining all different methods we could constrain the hot subdwarf to a mass of $0.39-0.50\,\rm M_\odot$ and a radius of $R_{\rm sdB}=0.194\pm0.008\,\rm R_\odot$, and the companion to $0.061-0.071\rm\,M_\odot$ with a radius of $R_{\rm comp}=0.092 \pm 0.005\,\rm R_\odot$, below the hydrogen burning limit. We therefore confirm that the companion is most likely a massive brown dwarf.
We present time-series spectroscopy and photometry of Gaia DR2 6097540197980557440, a new deeply-eclipsing hot subdwarf B (sdB) + M dwarf (dM) binary. We discovered this object during the course of the Eclipsing Reflection Effect Binaries from Optical Surveys (EREBOS) project, which aims to find new eclipsing sdB+dM binaries (HW Vir systems) and increase the small sample of studied systems. In addition to the primary eclipse, which is in excess of $\sim$5 magnitudes in the optical, the light curve also shows features typical for other HW Vir binaries such as a secondary eclipse and strong refl…
We selected 4593 hot subdwarf candidates from the Gaia DR2 Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. By combining the sample with LAMOST DR5, we identified 294 hot subdwarf stars, including 169 sdB, 63 sdOB, 31 He-sdOB, 22 sdO, 7 He-sdO and 2 He-sdB stars. The atmospheric parameters (e.g., T_{eff} , log g, log(nHe/nH)) are obtained by fitting the hydrogen (H) and helium (He) line profiles with synthetic spectra. Two distinct He sequences of hot subdwarf stars are clearly presented in the T_{eff} - log g diagram. We found that the He-rich sequence consists of the bulk of sdB and sdOB stars as well as a…
The development of large-scale time-domain surveys provides an opportunity to study the physical properties as well as the evolutionary scenario of B-type subdwarfs (sdB) and M-type dwarfs (dM). Here, we obtained 33 sdB+dM eclipsing binaries based on the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) light curves and $Gaia$ early data release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes. By using the PHOEBE code for light curve analysis, we obtain probability distributions for parameters of 29 sdB+dM. $R_1$, $R_2$, and $i$ are well determined, and the average uncertainty of mass ratio $q$ is 0.08. Our parameters are in good agreemen…
388 hot subdwarf stars have been identified by using the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram built from the second data release (DR2) of the Gaia mission. By analyzing their observed LAMOST spectra, we characterized 186 sdB, 73 He-sdOB, 65 sdOB, 45 sdO, 12 He-sdO and 7 He-sdB stars. The atmospheric parameters of these stars (e.g., T eff , log g, log(nHe/nH)) are obtained by fitting the hydrogen (H) and helium (He) line profiles with synthetic spectra calculated from non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) model atmospheres. Among these stars, we have 135 new identified hot subdwarfs which h…
Photometric surveys at optical, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths provide ever growing datasets as major surveys proceed. Colour-colour diagrams are useful tools to identify classes of stars and to provide large samples. Combining all photometric measurements of a star into a spectral energy distribution will allow quantitative analyses to be carried out. We demonstrate how to construct and exploit spectral energy distributions and colours for sublumious B (sdB) stars. The aim is to identify cool companions to hot subdwarfs and to determine atmospheric parameters of apparently single sdB s…

182 single-lined hot subdwarf stars are identified by using spectra from the sixth and seventh data release (DR6 and DR7) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. We classified all the hot subdwarf stars using a canonical classification scheme, and got 89 sdB, 37 sdOB, 26 sdO, 24 He-sdOB, 3 He-sdO and 3 He-sdB stars, respectively. Among these stars, 108 hot subdwarfs are newly discovered, while 74 stars were reported by previous catalogs. The atmospheric parameters of these stars were obtained by fitting the hydrogen (H) and helium (He) lines with non-l…
V391 Peg (alias HS2201+2610) is a subdwarf B (sdB) pulsating star that shows both p- and g-modes. By studying the arrival times of the p-mode maxima and minima through the O-C method, in a previous article the presence of a planet was inferred with an orbital period of 3.2 yr and a minimum mass of 3.2 M_Jup. Here we present an updated O-C analysis using a larger data set of 1066 hours of photometric time series (~2.5x larger in terms of the number of data points), which covers the period between 1999 and 2012 (compared with 1999-2006 of the previous analysis). Up to the end of 2008, the new O-…
222 hot subdwarf stars were identified with LAMOST DR8 spectra, among which 131 stars show composite spectra and have been decomposed, while 91 stars present single-lined spectra. Atmospheric parameters of all sample stars were obtained by fitting Hydrogen (H) and Helium (He) line profiles with synthetic spectra. Two long-period composite sdB binaries were newly discovered by combining our sample with the non-single star data from Gaia DR3. One of the new systems presents the highest eccentricity (i.e., 0.5 +/- 0.09) among known wide sdB binaries, which is beyond model predictions. 15 composit…
The current theory predicts that hot subdwarf binaries are produced from evolved low-mass binaries that have undergone mass transfer and drastic mass loss during either a common envelope phase or a stable Roche lobe overflow while on the red giant branch (RGB). We perform a spectroscopic survey to find binary systems that include low-mass red giants near the tip of the RGB, which are predicted to be the direct progenitors of subdwarf B (sdB) stars. We aim to obtain a homogeneous sample to search for the observational evidence of correlations between the key parameters governing the formation o…
In preparation for the upcoming all-sky data releases of the Gaia mission, we compiled a catalog of known hot subdwarf stars and candidates drawn from the literature and yet unpublished databases. The catalog contains 5613 unique sources and provides multi-band photometry from the ultraviolet to the far infrared, ground based proper motions, classifications based on spectroscopy and colors, published atmospheric parameters, radial velocities and light curve variability information. Using several different techniques, we removed outliers and misclassified objects. By matching this catalog with …
Hot subdwarf stars (sdO/Bs) are evolved core helium-burning stars with very thin hydrogen envelopes, which can be formed by common envelope ejection. Close sdB binaries with massive white dwarf (WD) companions are potential progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae type Ia (SN Ia). We discovered such a progenitor candidate as well as a candidate for a surviving companion star, which escapes from the Galaxy. More candidates for both types of objects have been found by crossmatching known sdB stars with proper motion and light curve catalogues. The Gaia mission will provide accurate astrometry and…
Comprehensive spectral analyses of the Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars of the nitrogen sequence (i.e.\ the WN subclass) have been performed in a previous paper. However, the distances of these objects were poorly known. Distances have a direct impact on the "absolute" parameters, such as luminosities and mass-loss rates. The recent Gaia Data Release (DR2) of trigonometric parallaxes includes nearly all WN stars of our Galactic sample. In the present paper, we apply the new distances to the previously analyzed Galactic WN stars and rescale the results accordingly. On this basis, we present a revised …
Because many classical Be stars may owe their nature to mass and angular-momentum transfer in a close binary, the present masses, temperatures, and radii of their components are of high interest for comparison to stellar evolution models. Kappa Dra is a 61.5-day single-lined binary with a B6 IIIe primary. With the CHARA Array instruments MIRC/MIRC-X and MYSTIC, we detected the secondary at (approximately photospheric) flux ratios of 1.49 +- 0.10% and 1.63 +- 0.09% in the H and K band, respectively. From a large and diverse optical spectroscopic database only the radial velocity curve of the Be…
We present the discovery of J22564-5910, a new type of hot subdwarf (sdB) which shows evidence of gas present in the system and has shallow, multi-peaked hydrogen and helium lines which vary in shape over time. All observational evidence points towards J22564-5910 being observed very shortly after the merger phase that formed it. Using high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy, combined with multi-band photometry, Gaia astrometry, and TESS light curves, we aim to interpret these unusual spectral features. The photometry, spectra and light curves are all analyzed, and their results are…
Hot subdwarf stars are mostly stripped red giants that can exhibit photometric variations due to stellar pulsations, eclipses, the reflection effect, ellipsoidal modulation, and Doppler beaming. Detailed studies of their light curves help constrain stellar parameters through asteroseismological analyses or binary light curve modeling and generally improve our capacity to draw a statistically meaningful picture of this enigmatic stage of stellar evolution. From an analysis of Gaia DR2 flux errors, we have identified around 1200 candidate hot subdwarfs with inflated flux errors for their magnitu…
Context. Young and embedded stellar populations are important probes of the star formation process. Paradoxically, we have a better census of nearby embedded young populations than the slightly more evolved optically visible young populations. The high accuracy measurements and all-sky coverage of Gaia data are about to change this situation. Aims. This work aims to construct the most complete sample to date of YSOs in the $ρ$ Oph region. Methods. We compile a catalog of 1114 Ophiuchus YSOs from the literature and crossmatch it with the Gaia EDR3, Gaia-ESO and APOGEE-2 surveys. We apply a mult…

We have revisited the sdB+K-star long-period binary PG 1018-047 based on 20 new high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra that provided regular coverage over a period of more than 26 months. We refine the period and establish that the orbit is significantly eccentric ($P=751.6\pm1.9\rm{d}$ and $e=0.049\pm0.008$). A simultaneous fit derived from the narrow metal lines visible in the spectrum of the sdB star and the metal lines in the red part of the spectrum that originate from the companion provides the mass ratio, $M_{\rm MS}/M_{\rm sdB} = 1.52 \pm 0.04$, for the system. From an NLTE model atmosphere …
Evolution of close binaries often proceeds through the common envelope stage. The physics of the envelope ejection (CEE) is not yet understood, and several mechanisms were suggested to be involved. These could give rise to different timescales for the CEE mass-loss. In order to probe the CEE-timescales we study wide companions to post-CE binaries. Faster mass-loss timescales give rise to higher disruption rates of wide binaries and result in larger average separations. We make use of data from Gaia DR2 to search for ultra-wide companions (projected separations $10^3$-$2\times 10^5$ a.u. and $M…
About a third of the hot subdwarfs of spectral type B, which are mostly core-helium burning objects on the extreme horizontal branch, are found in close binaries with cool, low-mass stellar, substellar, or white dwarf companions. They can show light variations due to different phenomena. We used light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and the \textit{K2} space mission to look for more sdB binaries. Their light curves can be used to study the hot subdwarf primaries and their companions and get orbital, atmospheric, and absolute parameters for those systems. By classifying th…
We present the discovery and asteroseismic analysis of a new g-mode hot B subdwarf (sdB) pulsator, EC 21494-7018 (TIC 278659026), monitored in TESS first sector using 120-second cadence. The light curve analysis reveals that EC 21494-7018 is a sdB pulsator counting up to 20 frequencies associated with independent g-modes. The seismic analysis singles out an optimal model solution in full agreement with independent measurements provided by spectroscopy (atmospheric parameters derived from model atmospheres) and astrometry (distance evaluated from Gaia DR2 trigonometric parallax). Several key pa…
Ultraviolet (UV) wavelength observations have made a significant contribution to our understanding of hot stellar populations of star clusters. Multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of stars, including ultraviolet observations, have proven to be an excellent tool for discovering unresolved hot companions in exotic stars such as blue straggler stars (BSS), thereby providing helpful clues to constrain their formation mechanisms. Melotte 66 is a 3.4 Gyr old open cluster located at a distance of 4810 pc. We identify the cluster members by applying the ML-MOC algorithm on Gaia EDR3 …
King 2, one of the oldest clusters in the Milky Way, with an age of $\sim$ 6 Gyr and distance of $\sim 5700$ pc, has been observed with UVIT payload on the \textit{ASTROSAT}. With membership information derived from {\it Gaia} EDR3, the cluster is found to have 39 blue straggler stars (BSSs). We created multi-wavelength spectra-energy distributions (SED) of all the BSSs. Out of 10 UV detected BSSs, 6 bright ones fitted with double component SEDs and were found to have hotter companions with properties similar to extreme horizontal branch (EHB)/subdwarf B (sdB) stars, with a range in luminosity…
We present observations and analysis of an RS CVn-type double-lined eclipsing binary system, RU Cnc. The system has been observed for over a century. The high-quality long-cadence \emph{Kepler} K2 C5 and C18, newly obtained observations, and two radial velocity curves were combined and analyzed simultaneously assuming multi-spot model. The masses, radii and luminosities of the component stars are precisely obtained as $M_\textrm{c} = 1.386\pm0.044\, M_{_\odot}$, $M_\textrm{h} = 1.437 \pm 0.046\, M{_\odot}$, $R_\textrm{h} = 2.39\pm 0.07\, R{_\odot}$, $R_\textrm{c} = 5.02 \pm 0.08\, R{_\odot}$, …
Distributions of wide binary stars in theory and in Gaia data: I. Generalized Ambartsumian (1937) approach and the family of power-law distributions of eccentricity
The period-change rate (PCR) of pulsating variable stars is a useful probe of changes in their interior structure, and thus of their evolutionary stages. So far, the PCRs of Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been explored in a limited sample of the total population of these variables. Here we use a template-based method to build observed minus computed (O-C) period diagrams, from which we can derive PCRs for these stars by taking advantage of the long time baseline afforded by the Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH) light curves, combined with additional…
The abundance of brown dwarfs (BDs) in young clusters is a diagnostic of star formation theory. Here we revisit the issue of determining the substellar initial mass function (IMF), based on a comparison between NGC1333 and IC348, two clusters in the Perseus star-forming region. We derive their mass distributions for a range of model isochrones, varying distances, extinction laws and ages, with comprehensive assessments of the uncertainties. We find that the choice of isochrone and other parameters have significant effects on the results, thus we caution against comparing IMFs obtained using di…
(Abridged:) It has been hypothesized that the location of Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) within the empirical relation between the inner disk radius (r$_{in}$), inferred from K-band interferometry, and the stellar luminosity (L$_*$), is related to the presence of the innermost gas, the disk-to-star accretion mechanism, the dust disk properties inferred from the spectral energy distributions (SEDs), or a combination of these effects. This work aims to test whether the previously proposed hypotheses do, in fact, serve as a general explanation for the distribution of HAeBes in the size-luminosity di…
