We show how to count and randomly generate finitely generated subgroups of the modular group $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of a given isomorphism type. We also prove that almost malnormality and non-parabolicity are negligible properties for these subgroups.
The combinatorial methods developed to achieve these results bring to light a natural map, which associates with any finitely generated subgroup of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ a graph which we call its silhouette, and which can be interpreted as a conjugacy class of free finite index subgroups of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$.
We show that in the extended modular group PGL(2,Z) there are exactly seven finite subgroups up to conjugacy; three subgroups of size 2, one subgroup each of size 3, 4, and 6, and the trivial subgroup of size 1.
We determine the irreducible 2-modular representations of the symplectic group $G=Sp_{2n}(2)$ whose restriction to every abelian subgroup has a trivial constituent. A similar result is obtained for maximal tori of $G$. There is significant information on the existence of eigenvalue 1 of elements of $G$ in a given irreducible representation of $G$.
Let $G$ be a finite group. If $M_n < M_{n-1} < \ldots < M_1 < M_{0}=G $ where $M_i$ is a maximal subgroup of $M_{i-1}$ for all $i=1, \ldots ,n$, then $M_n $ ($n > 0$) is an \emph{$n$-maximal subgroup} of $G$. A subgroup $M$ of $G$ is called \emph{modular} if the following conditions are held: (i) $\langle X, M \cap Z \rangle=\langle X, M \rangle \cap Z$ for all $X \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $X \leq Z$, and (ii) $\langle M, Y \cap Z \rangle=\langle M, Y \rangle \cap Z$ for all $Y \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $M \leq Z$. In this paper, we study finite groups whose $n$-maximal subgroups are modul…
In 1933 B.~H.~Neumann constructed uncountably many subgroups of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ which act regularly on the primitive elements of $\mathbb Z^2$. As pointed out by Magnus, their images in the modular group ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb Z)\cong C_3*C_2$ are maximal nonparabolic subgroups, that is, maximal with respect to containing no parabolic elements. We strengthen and extend this result by giving a simple construction using planar maps to show that for all integers $p\ge 3$, $q\ge 2$ the triangle group $Γ=Δ(p,q,\infty)\cong C_p*C_q$ has uncountably many conjugacy classes of nonparabolic maxima…
Consider the modular group $\mbox{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})=\langle x, \, y \,|\, x^2=y^3=1\rangle$ generated by the transformations $x: z\mapsto -1/z$ and $y:z\mapsto (z-1)/z$. Let $H$ be the proper subgroup $\langle y,\,v\,|\, y^3=v^3=1\rangle$ of $\mbox{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$, where $v=xyx$. The reference (M. Ashiq and Q. Mushtaq, {\em Actions of a subgroup of the modular group on an imaginary quadratic field}, Quasigropus and Related Systems {\bf 14} (2006), 133--146) proposed results concerning the action of $H$ on the subset $\{\frac{a+\sqrt{-n}}{c}\,|\, a,b=\frac{a^2+n}{c}, c \in \mathbb{Z}, c\ne…
We consider a certain hybridization construction which produces a subgroup of ${\rm PU}(n,1)$ from a pair of lattices in ${\rm PU}(n-1,1)$. Among the Picard modular groups ${\rm PU}(2,1,\mathcal{O}_d)$, we show that the hybrid of pairs of Fuchsian subgroups ${\rm PU}(1,1,\mathcal{O}_d)$ is a lattice when $d=1$ and $d=7$, and a geometrically infinite thin subgroup when $d=3$, that is an infinite-index subgroup with the same Zariski-closure as the full lattice.
Let V(KG) be a normalised unit group of the modular group algebra of a finite p-group G over the field K of p elements. We introduce a notion of symmetric subgroups in V(KG) as subgroups invariant under the action of the classical involution of the group algebra KG. We study properties of symmetric subgroups and construct a counterexample to the conjecture by V.Bovdi, which states that V(KG)=<G,S*>, where S* is a set of symmetric units of V(KG).
Let $A$ be the ring of elements in an algebraic function field $K$ over a finite field $F_q$ which are integral outside a fixed place $\infty$. In an earlier paper we have shown that the Drinfeld modular group $G=GL_2(A)$ has automorphisms which map congruence subgroups to non-congruence subgroups. Here we prove the existence of (uncountably many) normal genuine non-congruence subgroups, defined to be those which remain non-congruence under the action of every automorphism of $G$. In addition, for all but finitely many cases we evaluate $ngncs(G)$, the smallest index of a normal genuine non-co…
We count the finitely generated subgroups of the modular group $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. More precisely: each such subgroup $H$ can be represented by its Stallings graph $Γ(H)$, we consider the number of vertices of $Γ(H)$ to be the size of $H$ and we count the subgroups of size $n$. Since an index $n$ subgroup has size $n$, our results generalize the known results on the enumeration of the finite index subgroups of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. We give asymptotic equivalents for the number of finitely generated subgroups of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$, as well as of the number of finite …
Let KG be a group algebra of a finite p-group G over a finite field K of characteristic p. We compute the order of the unitary subgroup of the group of units when G is either an extraspecial 2-group or the central product of such a group with a cyclic group of order 4 or G has an abelian subgroup A of index 2 and an element b such that b inverts each element of A.
In this work, we derive the low index subgroups of the extended Hecke, Hecke and the Picard groups using tools in color symmetry theory. We also present the low index subgroups of the modular group.
Given an imaginary quadratic extension $K$ of $\mathbb Q$, we give a classification of the maximal nonelementary subgroups of the Picard modular group $\operatorname{PSU}_{1,2}(\mathcal O_K)$ preserving a complex geodesic in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2_\mathbb C$. Complementing work of Holzapfel, Chinburg-Stover and Möller-Toledo, we show that these maximal $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups are arithmetic, arising from a quaternion algebra $\Big(\!\begin{array}{c} D\,,D_K\\\hline\mathbb QQ\end{array} \!\Big)$ for some explicit $D\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$ and $D_K$ the discriminant of $K$.…
Let $p$ be a prime number, $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $K$ be a field of characteristic $p$. The Modular Isomorphism Problem (MIP) asks whether the group algebra $KG$ determines the group $G$. Dealing with MIP, we investigated a question whether the nilpotency class of a finite $p$-group is determined by its modular group algebra over the field of $p$ elements. We give a positive answer to this question provided one of the following conditions holds: (i) $\exp G=p$; (ii) $\cl(G)=2$; (iii) $G'$ is cyclic; (iv) $G$ is a group of maximal class and contains an abelian subgroup of index $p$.
In this note, we describe first the structure of minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups. Then we determine the minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups which are modular. Also, we find connections between minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups and the subgroup commutativity degree, and we give an example of a family of non-nilpotent modular finite groups $G_n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, whose subgroup commutativity degree tends to $1$ as $n$ tends to infinity.
In this article, we first characterize pseudocomplemented inductive modular lattices by using their two 0-sublattices. Then we use two 0-sublattices of a subgroup lattice to describe all locally cyclic abelian groups. In particular, we show that a locally cyclic abelian group can be characterized by its three subgroups.
A subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$ is called submodular in $G$, if we can connect $H$ with $G$ by a chain of subgroups, each of which is modular (in the sense of Kurosh) in the next. If a group $G$ is supersoluble and every Sylow subgroup of $G$ is submodular in $G$, then $G$ is called strongly supersoluble. The properties of groups with submodular Sylow subgroups are obtained. In particular, we proved that in a group every Sylow subgroup is submodular if and only if the group is Ore dispersive and every its biprimary subgroup is strongly supersoluble.
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$ and ${\cal H}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be, respectively, the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$ smooth curves and its closed substack consisting of hyperelliptic curves. Their topological fundamental groups can be identified, respectively, with $Γ_{g,n}$ and $H_{g,n}$, the so called Teichm{ü}ller modular group and hyperelliptic modular group. A choice of base point on ${\cal H}_{g,n}$ defines a monomorphism $H_{g,n}\hookrightarrowΓ_{g,n}$. Let $S_{g,n}$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed. The Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ is the group of iso…
In 1878, Jordan showed that a finite subgroup of GL(n,C) contains an abelian normal subgroup whose index is bounded by a function of n alone. Previously, the author has given precise bounds. Here, we consider analogues for finite linear groups over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic l. A larger normal subgroup must be taken, to eliminate unipotent subgroups and groups of Lie type and characteristic l, and we show that generically the bound is similar to that in characteristic 0 - being (n+1)!, or (n+2)! when l divides (n+2) - given by the faithful representations of minimal…
We extend some algebraic properties of the classical modular group SL_2(Z) to equivalent groups in the theory of Drinfeld modules, in particular properties which are important in the theory of modular curves. We study cusp amplitudes and the level of a (congruence) subgroup of SL_2(D) for any Dedekind domain D, as ideals of D. In particular, we extend a remarkable result of Larcher. We introduce finer notions of quasi-amplitude and quasi-level, which are not required to be ideals and encode more information about the subgroup. Our results also provide several new necessary conditions for a sub…
In this paper we give an explicit formula for the number of subgroups of the modular group of a given index that are genus zero and torsion-free and a formula for their conjugacy classes. We do so by exhibiting a correspondence between these groups and the trivalent maps on a sphere. We focus on the particular case of the subgroups of index 18 which have some interesting geometric properties.
Let $K$ be field of characteristic 2 and let $G$ be a finite non-abelian 2-group with the cyclic derived subgroup $G'$, and there exists a central element $z$ of order 2 in $Z(G) \backslash G'$. We prove that the unit group of the group algebra $KG$ possesses a section isomorphic to the wreath product of a group of order 2 with the derived subgroup of the group $G$, giving for such groups a positive answer to the question of A. Shalev.
We provide examples of finitely generated infinite covolume subgroups of $PSL(2,R)^r$ with a "big" limit set, e.g. that contains an open subset of the geometric boundary. They are given by the so called semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups admitting modular embeddings.
We show that if G is a finite group then no chain of modular elements in its subgroup lattice L(G) is longer than a chief series. Also, we show that if G is a nonsolvable finite group then every maximal chain in L(G) has length at least two more than that of the chief length of G, thereby providing a converse of a result of J. Kohler. Our results enable us to give a new characterization of finite solvable groups involving only the combinatorics of subgroup lattices. Namely, a finite group G is solvable if and only if L(G) contains a maximal chain X and a chain M consisting entirely of modular …
We show that $\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z}G)$, the unit group of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$, either satisfies Kazhdan's property (T) or is, up to commensurability, a non-trivial amalgamated product, in case $G$ is a finite group satisfying some mild conditions. Crucial in the proof is the construction of amalgamated decompositions of the elementary group $\operatorname{E}_2(\mathcal{O})$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is an order in a rational division algebra. A major step is to introduce subgroups $\operatorname{E}_2(Γ_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ inside the so-called higher modular groups $\operatorname{SL}…
We prove a rigidity theorem for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups: If $Γ_1$, $Γ_2$ are two semi-arithmetic lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ virtually admitting modular embeddings and $f\colonΓ_1\toΓ_2$ is a group isomorphism that respects the notion of congruence subgroups, then $f$ is induced by an inner automorphism of $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{R})$.
