We determine the irreducible 2-modular representations of the symplectic group $G=Sp_{2n}(2)$ whose restriction to every abelian subgroup has a trivial constituent. A similar result is obtained for maximal tori of $G$. There is significant information on the existence of eigenvalue 1 of elements of $G$ in a given irreducible representation of $G$.
We determine the conjugacy classes of semisimple elements in the symplectic groups ${\rm Sp}(2m,F)$, where $F$ is an arbitrary field of characteristic not $2$. This note was originally a letter dated 23 March, 2006, from G.E. Wall to Cheryl E. Praeger, and has been reproduced with his kind permission.
It was shown in Part I that there exist strongly dense free subgroups in any semisimple algebraic group over a large enough field. These are nonabelian free subgroups all of whose subgroups are either cyclic or Zariski-dense. Here we show that the same is true for as long as the transcendence degree of the field is at least $1$ in characteristic zero and at least $2$ in positive characteristic. We also consider related questions for surface groups.
We give very precise bounds for the congruence subgroup growth of arithmetic groups. This allows us to determine the subgroup growth of irreducible lattices of semisimple Lie groups. In the most general case our results depend on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for number fields but we can state the following unconditional theorem: Let $G$ be a simple Lie group of real rank at least 2, different than $D_4(\bbc)$, and let $Γ$ be any non-uniform lattice of $G$. Let $s_n(Γ)$ denote the number of subgroups of index at most $n$ in $Γ$. Then the limit $\lim\limits_{n\to \infty} \frac{\log s_n(Γ)}…
Let $G$ be a semisimple affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. We describe all the maximal connected solvable subgroups of $G$, defined over $k$, up to conjugation by rational points of $G$.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $G$ be a non-abelian finite $p$-group of exponent $p^2$ with three distinct characteristic subgroups, namely $1$, $G^p$, and $G$. The quotient group $G/G^p$ gives rise to an anti-commutative ${\mathbb F}_p$-algebra $L$ such that the action of ${\rm Aut}(L)$ is irreducible on $L$; we call such an algebra IAC. This paper establishes a duality $G\leftrightarrow L$ between such groups and such IAC algebras. We prove that IAC algebras are semisimple and we classify the simple IAC algebras of dimension at most 4 over certain fields. We also give other examples of simp…
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
A new approach to classification of solvable spherical subgroups of semisimple algebraic groups is considered. This approach is completely different from the known approach by D. Luna and provides an explicit classification.
The existence of closed orbits of real algebraic groups on real algebraic varieties is established. As an application, it is shown that if G is a real reductive linear group with Iwasawa decomposition G= KAN, then every unipotent subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of N.
We develop a structure theory of connected solvable spherical subgroups in semisimple algebraic groups. Based on this theory, we obtain an explicit classification of all such subgroups up to conjugation.
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. We show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over an algebraic closure of $k$ are actually conjugate over a finite field extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups. Moreover, if $k$ is a real number field, we show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over the field of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ are actually conjugate over a finite real extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups.
We prove that the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz space associated with a discrete subgroup of a semisimple Lie group is a dense subalgebra of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of the discrete subgroup. Then, we prove that for the reduced $C^*$-norm is controlled by the norm of the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz space. This inequality is weaker than property RD and holds for any discrete group acting isometrically, properly on a Riemannian symmetric space.
Every commutator preserving bijection of the unipotent radical $Up(2n, R)$ of the Borel subgroup of the classical symplectic group of rank at least 4 over a field $F$ such that $6F=F$ is shown to be the composition of a standard automorphism of $Up(2n,R)$ and a central map. The latter is a bijection which acts as the right multiplication by a matrix from the center of $Up(2n,F)$.
We show that (with one possible exception) there exist strongly dense free subgroups in any semisimple algebraic group over a large enough field. These are nonabelian free subgroups all of whose subgroups are either cyclic or Zariski dense. As a consequence, we get new generating results for finite simple groups of Lie type and a strengthening of a theorem of Borel related to the Hausdorff-Banach-Tarski paradox. In a sequel to this paper, we use this result to also establish uniform expansion properties for random Cayley graphs over finite simple groups of Lie type.
Given a finite nonabelian semisimple group $G$, we describe those groups that have the same holomorph as $G$, that is, those regular subgroups $N\simeq G$ of $S(G)$, the group of permutations on the set $G$, such that $N_{S(G)}(N)=N_{S(G)}(ρ(G))$, where $ρ$ is the right regular representation of $G$.
We study analogues of the notions from Lie theory of Levi subgroup and Levi decomposition, in the case of groups G definable in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. With suitable definitions, we prove that G has a unique maximal ind-definable semisimple subgroup S, up to conjugacy, and that G = RS where R is the solvable radical of G. We also prove that any semisimple subalgebra of the Lie algebra of G corresponds to a unique ind-definable semisimple subgroup of G.
In this paper we prove a sandwich classification theorem for subgroups of the classical symplectic group over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$ that contain the elementary block-diagonal (or subsystem) subgroup $\operatorname{Ep}(ν, R)$ corresponding to a unitary equivalence realation $ν$ such that all self-conjugate equivalence classes of $ν$ are of size at least 4 and all not-self-conjugate classes of $ν$ are of size at least 5. Namely, given a subgroup $H$ of $\operatorname{Sp}(2n, R)$ such that $\operatorname{Ep}(ν, R) \le H$ we show that there exists a unique exact major form net of ideal…
For $n \geq 2$ let $Δ$ be a Dynkin diagram of rank $n$ and let $I = {1, >..., n}$ be the set of labels of $Δ$. A group $G$ admits a weak Phan system of type $Δ$ over $\mathbb{C}$ if $G$ is generated by subgroups $U_i$, $i \in I$, which are central quotients of simply connected compact semisimple Lie groups of rank one, and contains subgroups $U_{i,j} = \gen{U_i ,U_j}$, $i \neq j \in I$, which are central quotients of simply connected compact semisimple Lie groups of rank two such that $U_i$ and $U_j$ are rank one subgroups of $U_{i,j}$ corresponding to a choice of a maximal torus and a fundame…
We give a complete classification of all nonuniform congruences on orthogonal rook monoids and symplectic rook monoids. We find that there are four kinds of nonuniform congruences on the orthogonal rook monoids ${OR}_n$ for even $n\ne 4$, and we describe each kind of the congruences explicitly in terms of normal subgroups of maximal subgroups. We also find that if $n = 4$, there are six kinds of nonuniform congruences on ${OR}_4$, and we describe these congruences using both $\mathcal{H}$-relations and certain normal subgroups of some maximal subgroups. In contrast, we find that there is only …
For an arbitrary connected solvable spherical subgroup H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G we compute the group N_G(H), the normalizer of H in G. Thereby we complete a classification of all (not necessarily connected) solvable spherical subgroups in semisimple algebraic groups.
Let $K$ be a $p$-adically closed field and $G$ a group interpretable in $K$. We show that if $G$ is definably semisimple (i.e. $G$ has no definable infinite normal abelian subgroups) then there exists a finite normal subgroup $H$ such that $G/H$ is definably isomorphic to a $K$-linear group. The result remains true in models of $\mathrm{Th}(\mathbb{Q}_p^{an})$.
Using generating functions, we enumerate regular semisimple conjugacy classes in the finite classical groups. For the general linear, unitary, and symplectic groups this gives a different approach to known results; for the special orthogonal groups the results are new.
A semisimple element $s$ of a connected reductive group $G$ is said {\it quasi-isolated} (respectively {\it isolated}) if $C_G(s)$ (respectively $C_G^0(s)$) is not contained in a Levi subgroup of a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. We study properties of quasi-isolated semisimple elements and give a classification in terms of the affine Dynkin diagram of $G$. Tables are provided for adjoint simple groups.
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be pronormal in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g\rangle$ for every element $g \in G$. In [Sib. Math. J. 2015. Vol. 56, no. 6] we proved that subgroups of odd indeces are pronormal in many finite simple group. In [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., to appear] we proved that a group $PSp_{6n}(q)$ with $q \equiv \pm 3 \pmod 8$ contains a nonpronormal subgroup of odd index. In this paper we prove that if $n \not \in \{2^m, 2^m(2^{2k}+1) \mid m, k \in \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}\}$ then a group $PSp_{2n}(q)$ with $q \equiv \pm 3 \pmod 8$ contains a no…
Oshima's Lemma describes the orbits of parabolic subgroups of irreducible finite Weyl groups on crystallographic root systems. This note generalises that result to all root systems of finite Coxeter groups, and provides a self contained proof, independent of the representation theory of semisimple complex Lie algebras.
Let G be a finite simple group of Lie type. In this paper we study characters of G that vanish at the non-semisimple elements and whose degree is equal to the order of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. Such characters can be viewed as a natural generalization of the Steinberg character. For groups G of small rank we also determine the characters of this degree vanishing only at the non-identity unipotent elements.
Let $G$ be a semisimple linear algebraic group over a field $k$ and let $G^+(k)$ be the subgroup generated by the subgroups $R_u(Q)(k)$, where $Q$ ranges over all the minimal $k$-parabolic subgroups $Q$ of $G$. We prove that if $G^+(k)$ is bounded then it is uniformly bounded. Under extra assumptions we get explicit bounds for $Δ(G^+(k))$: we prove that if $k$ is algebraically closed then $Δ(G^+(k))\leq 4\, {\rm rank}\,G$, and if $G$ is split over $k$ then $Δ(G^+(k))\leq 28\, {\rm rank}\,G$. We deduce some analogous results for real and complex semisimple Lie groups.
In this note we give a self-contained proof of the following classification (up to conjugation) of subgroups of the general symplectic group of dimension n over a finite field of characteristic l, for l at least 5, which can be derived from work of Kantor: G is either reducible, symplectically imprimitive or it contains Sp(n, l). This result is for instance useful for proving "big image" results for symplectic Galois representations.
Using Cohen's classification of symplectic reflection groups, we prove that the parabolic subgroups, that is, stabilizer subgroups, of a finite symplectic reflection group are themselves symplectic reflection groups. This is the symplectic analogue of Steinberg's Theorem for complex reflection groups. Using computational results required in the proof, we show the non-existence of symplectic resolutions for symplectic quotient singularities corresponding to three exceptional symplectic reflection groups, thus reducing further the number of cases for which the existence question remains open. An…
Let $G$ be a semisimple real algebraic Lie group of real rank at least two and $U$ be the unipotent radical of a non-trivial parabolic subgroup. We prove that a discrete Zariski dense subgroup of $G$ that contains an irreducible lattice of $U$ is an arithmetic lattice of $G$. This solves a conjecture of Margulis and extends previous work of Hee Oh.
We provide partial results towards a conjectural generalization of a theorem of Lubotzky-Mozes-Raghunathan for arithmetic groups (over number fields or function fields) that implies, in low dimensions, both polynomial isoperimetric inequalities and finiteness properties. As a tool in our proof, we establish polynomial isoperimetric inequalities and finiteness properties for certain solvable groups that appear as subgroups of parabolic groups in semisimple groups, thus generalizing a theorem of Bux. We also develop a precise version of reduction theory for arithmetic groups whose proof is, for …
A closed subgroup of a semisimple algebraic group is called irreducible if it lies in no proper parabolic subgroup. In this paper we classify all irreducible subgroups of exceptional algebraic groups $G$ which are connected, closed and simple of rank at least $2$. Consequences are given concerning the representations of such subgroups on various $G$-modules: for example, with one exception, the conjugacy classes of irreducible simple connected subgroups of rank at least $2$ are determined by their composition factors on the adjoint module for $G$.
We show that arithmetic subgroups of semisimple groups of relative Q-type A_n, B_n, C_n, D_n, E_6, or E_7 have an exponential lower bound to their isoperimetric inequality in the dimension that is 1 less than the real rank of the semisimple group.
Let G be a simple non-compact linear connected Lie group and H be a closed non-compact semisimple subgroup. We are interested in finding classes of homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper actions of discrete non virtually abelian subgroups of G. We develop an algorithm for finding such homogeneous spaces. As a testing example we obtain a list of all non-compact homogeneous spaces G/H admitting proper action of a discrete and non virtually abelian subgroup of G in the case when G has rank at most 8, and H is a maximal proper semisimple subgroup.
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. We show that if $H_1$ and $H_2$ are connected subgroups of $G$ such that $H_1$ and $H_2$ have a common maximal unipotent subgroup and $H_1/R_u(H_1)$ and $H_2/R_u(H_2)$ are semisimple, then $H_1$ and $H_2$ are $G$-conjugate. Moreover, we show that if $H$ is a semisimple linear algebraic group with maximal unipotent subgroup $U$ then for any algebraic group homomorphism $σ\colon U\rightarrow G$, there are only finitely many $G$-conjugacy classes of algebraic group homomorphisms $ρ\colon H\rightarr…
We give a method for constructing dense and free subgroups in real Lie groups. In particular we show that any dense subgroup of a connected semisimple real Lie group G contains a free group on two generators which is still dense in G, and that any finitely generated dense subgroup in a connected non-solvable Lie group H contains a dense free subgroup of rank < 2 dim(H). This answer a question of Carriere and Ghys, and it gives an elementary proof of a conjecture of Connes and Sullivan on amenable actions, which was first proved by Zimmer.
We classify up to conjugation by $\operatorname{GL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ (more precisely, block diagonal symplectic matrices) all the semidirect products inside the maximal parabolic of $\operatorname{Sp}(2,\mathbb{R})$ by means of an essentially geometric argument. This classification has already been established without geometry, under a stricter notion of equivalence, namely conjugation by arbitrary symplectic matrices. The present approach might be useful in higher dimensions and provides some insight.
We prove several results about groups of finite Morley rank without unipotent p-torsion: p-torsion always occurs inside tori, Sylow p-subgroups are conjugate, and p is not the minimal prime divisor of our approximation to the ``Weyl group.'' These results are quickly finding extensive applications within the classification project.
We define and study supercharacters of the classical finite unipotent groups of symplectic and orthogonal types (over any finite field of odd characteristic). We show how supercharacters for groups of those types can be obtained by restricting the supercharacter theory of the finite unitriangular group, and prove that supercharacters are orthogonal and provide a partition of the set of all irreducible characters. We also describe all irreducible characters of maximum degree in terms of the root system, and show how they can be obtained as constituents of particular supercharacters.
For a positive integer $g$, let $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(R)$ denote the group of $2g \times 2g$ symplectic matrices over a ring $R$. Assume $g \ge 2$. For a prime number $\ell$, we give a self-contained proof that any closed subgroup of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ which surjects onto $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z})$ must in fact equal all of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2g}(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$. The result and the method of proof are both motivated by group-theoretic considerations that arise in the study of Galois representations associated to abelian varieties.
For an integer $M\geq 2$ and a finite group $G$, an element $α\in G$ is called an $M$-th power if it satisfies $A^M=α$ for some $A\in G$. In this article, we will deal with the case when $G$ is finite symplectic or orthogonal group over a field of order $q$. We introduce the notion of $M^*$-power SRIM polynomials. This, amalgamated with the concept of $M$-power polynomial, we provide the complete classification of the conjugacy classes of regular semisimple, semisimple, cyclic and regular elements in $G$, which are $M$-th powers, when $(M,q)=1$. The approach here is of generating functions, as…
Let $k$ be a number field, $Ω$ be a finite symmetric subset of $\mathbb{GL}_{n_0}(k)$, and $Γ=\langle Ω\rangle$. Let \[ C(Γ):=\{\mathfrak{p}\in V_f(k)|\hspace{1mm} Γ\text{is a bounded subgroup of} \mathbb{GL}_{n_0}(k_{\mathfrak{p}})\}, \] and $Γ_{\mathfrak{p}}$ be the closure of $Γ$ in $\mathbb{GL}_{n_0}(k_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Assuming that the Zariski-closure of $Γ$ is semisimple, we prove that the family of left translation actions $\{Γ\curvearrowright Γ_{\mathfrak{p}}\}_{\mathfrak{p}\in C(Γ)}$ has {\em uniform spectral gap}. As a corollary we get that the left translation action $Γ\curvearrowr…
In 2012 the second author obtained a description of the lattice of subgroupsof a Chevalley group $G(Φ,A)$, containing the elementary subgroup $E(Φ,K)$ over a subring $K\subseteq A$ provided $Φ=B_n,$ $C_n$ or $F_4$, $n\ge2$, and $2$ is invertible in $K$. It turns out that this lattice splits into a disjoint union of "sandwiches", parametrized by intermediate subrings between $K$ and $A$. In the current article a similar result is proved for $Φ=B_n$ or $C_n$, $n\ge3$, and $2=0$ in $K$. In this settings one has to introduce more sandwiches, namely, the sandwiches are parametrized by form rings $(…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group. Assume that $G(\bb R)$ has no compact factors and let $Γ$ be a torsion-free uniform lattice subgroup of $G(\bb R)$. Then $Γ$ contains a malnormal abelian subgroup $A$. This implies that the $\tto$ factor $\vn(Γ)$ contains a masa $\fk A$ with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$.
We show that the number of conjugacy classes of maximal finite subgroups of a lattice in a semisimple Lie group is linearly bounded by the covolume of the lattice. Moreover, for higher rank groups, we show that this number grows sublinearly with covolume. We obtain similar results for isotropy subgroups in lattices. Geometrically, this yields volume bounds for the number of strata in the natural stratification of a finite-volume locally symmetric orbifold.
We obtain the symplectic group $\SP(V)$ as the universal completion of an amalgam of low rank subgroups akin to Levi components. We let $\SP(V)$ act flag-transitively on the geometry of maximal rank subspaces of $V$. We show that this geometry and its rank $\ge 3$ residues are simply connected with few exceptions. The main exceptional residue is described in some detail. The amalgamation result is then obtained by applying Tits' lemma. This provides a new way of recognizing the symplectic groups from a small collection of small subgroups.
