Minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups

In this note, we describe first the structure of minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups. Then we determine the minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups which are modular. Also, we find connections between minimal non-Iwasawa finite groups and the subgroup commutativity degree, and we give an example of a family of non-nilpotent modular finite groups $G_n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, whose subgroup commutativity degree tends to $1$ as $n$ tends to infinity.

Cyclic subgroup commutativity degrees of finite groups

In this paper we introduce and study the concept of cyclic subgroup commutativity degree of a finite group $G$. This quantity measures the probability of two random cyclic subgroups of $G$ commuting. Explicit formulas are obtained for some particular classes of groups. A criterion for a finite group to be an Iwasawa group is also presented.

Pro-p groups with constant generating number on open subgroups

Let p be a prime. We classify finitely generated pro-p groups G which satisfy d(H) = d(G) for all open subgroups H of G. Here d(H) denotes the minimal number of topological generators for the subgroup H. Within the category of p-adic analytic pro-p groups, this answers a question of Iwasawa.

Classifying uniformly generated groups

A finite group $G$ is called *uniformly generated*, if whenever there is a (strictly ascending) chain of subgroups $1<\langle x_1\rangle<\langle x_1,x_2\rangle <\cdots<\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_d\rangle=G$, then $d$ is the minimal number of generators of $G$. Our main result classifies the uniformly generated groups without using the simple group classification. These groups are related to finite projective geometries by a result of Iwasawa on subgroup lattices.

Irredundant and minimal covers of finite groups

A cover of a finite non-cyclic group $G$ is a family $\mathcal{H}$ of proper subgroups of $G$ whose union equals $G$. A cover of $G$ is called minimal if it has minimal size, and irredundant if it does not properly contain any other cover. We classify the finite non-cyclic groups all of whose irredundant covers are minimal.

The length and depth of compact Lie groups

Let $G$ be a connected Lie group. An unrefinable chain of $G$ is a chain of subgroups $G = G_0 > G_1 > \cdots > G_t = 1$, where each $G_i$ is a maximal connected subgroup of $G_{i-1}$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of the length (respectively, depth) of $G$, defined as the maximal (respectively, minimal) length of such a chain, and we establish several new results for compact groups. On the structure of virtually nilpotent compact $p$-adic analytic groups

Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group.
