We present a proof of strict $g$-convexity in 2D for solutions of generated Jacobian equations with a $g$-Monge-Ampère measure bounded away from 0. Subsequently this implies $C^1$ differentiability in the case of a $g$-Monge-Ampère measure bounded from above. Our proof follows one given by Trudinger and Wang in the Monge-Ampère case. Thus, like theirs, our argument is local and yields a quantitative estimate on the $g$-convexity. As a result our differentiability result is new even in the optimal transport case: we weaken previously required domain convexity conditions. Moreover in the optimal transport case and the Monge-Ampère case our key assumptions, namely A3w and domain convexity, are necessary.
This article has two purposes. The first is to prove solutions of the second boundary value problem for generated Jacobian equations are strictly $g$-convex. The second is to prove the global $C^3$ regularity of Aleksandrov solutions to the same problem under stronger hypothesis. These are related because the strict $g$-convexity is essential for the proof of the global regularity. The assumptions for the strict $g$-convexity are the natural extension of those used by Chen and Wang in the optimal transport case. They improve the existing domain conditions though at the expense of requiring a $…
In this paper we revisit our previous study of the local theory of prescribed Jacobian equations associated with generating functions, which are extensions of cost functions in the theory of optimal transportation. In particular, as foreshadowed in the earlier work, we provide details pertaining to the relaxation of a monotonicity condition A4w in the underlying convexity theory and the consequent classical regularity. Taking advantage of recent work of Kitagawa and Guillen, we also extend our classical regularity theory to the weak form A3w of the critical matrix convexity conditions.
A result of existence of a nonnegative and a nontrivial solution is proved via critical point theorems for non smooth functionals. The equation considered presents a convex part and a nonlinearity which changes sign.
We prove that if two $C^{1,1}(Ω)$ solutions of the second boundary value problem for the generated Jacobian equation intersect in $Ω$ then they are the same solution. In addition we extend this result to $C^{2}(\overlineΩ)$ solutions intersecting on the boundary, via an additional convexity condition on the target domain.
We prove that convex viscosity solutions to the quadratic Hessian inequality $σ_2(D^2u) \geq 1$ are strictly $2$-convex. As a consequence we obtain short proofs of smoothness and interior $C^2$ estimates for convex viscosity solutions to $σ_2(D^2u) = 1$, which were proven using different methods in recent works of Guan-Qiu \cite{GQ}, McGonagle-Song-Yuan \cite{MSY} and Shankar-Yuan \cite{SY2}.
We develop the fundamentals of a local regularity theory for prescribed Jacobian equations which extend the corresponding results for optimal transportation equations. In this theory the cost function is extended to a generating function through dependence on an additional scalar variable. In particular we recover in this generality the local regularity theory for potentials of Ma,Trudinger and Wang, along with the subsequent development of the underlying convexity theory.
This note concerns the relationship between conditions on cost functions and domains and the convexity properties of potentials in optimal transportation and the continuity of the associated optimal mappings. In particular, we prove that if the cost function satisfies the condition (A3), introduced in our previous work with Xinan Ma, the densities and their reciprocals are bounded and the target domain is convex with respect to the cost function, then the potential is continuously differentiable and its dual potential strictly concave with respect to the cost function. Our result extends, by d…
This is a PhD thesis about generated Jacobian equations; our purpose is twofold. First, we provide an introduction to these equations, whilst, at the same time, collating some results scattered throughout the literature. The other goal is to present the author's own results on these equations. These results all concern solutions of generated Jacobian equations, usually paired with the second boundary value problem. We prove strict convexity and $C^1$ differentiability results under optimal hypothesis in two dimensions, and the same results in higher dimensions with some additional hypothesis. …
We establish a maximum principle for a two-point function in order to analyze the convexity of level sets of harmonic functions. We show that this can be used to prove a strict convexity result involving the smallest principal curvature of the level sets.

In the case of scalar conservation laws $$ u_{t} + f(u)_{x}~=~0,\qquad t\geq 0, x\in\mathbb{R}, $$ with uniformly strictly convex flux $f$, quantitative compactness estimates - in terms of Kolmogorov entropy in ${\bf L}^{1}_{loc}$ - were established in~\cite{DLG,AON1} for sets of entropy weak solutions evaluated at a fixed time $t>0$, whose initial data have a uniformly bounded support and vary in a bounded subset of ${\bf L}^\infty$. These estimates reflect the irreversibility features of entropy weak discontinuous solutions of these nonlinear equations. We provide here an extension of such e…
This work presents a general principle, in the spirit of convex integration, leading to a method for the characterization of Young measures generated by gradients of maps in $W^{1,p}$ with $p$ less than the space dimension, whose Jacobian determinant is subjected to a range of constraints. Two special cases are particularly important in the theories of elasticity and fluid dynamics: (a) the generating gradients have positive Jacobians that are uniformly bounded away from zero and (b) the underlying deformations are incompressible, corresponding to their Jacobian determinants being constantly o…
In \cite{CMS}, Chen-Ma-Salani established the strict convexity of spacetime level sets of solutions to heat equation in convex rings, using the constant rank theorem and a deformation method. In this paper, we generalize the constant rank theorem in \cite{CMS} to fully nonlinear parabolic equations, that is, establish the corresponding microscopic spacetime convexity principles of spacetime level sets. In fact, the results hold for fully nonlinear parabolic equations under a general structural condition, including the $p$-Laplacian parabolic equations ($p >1$) and some mean curvature type para…
We introduce a new PDE approach to establishing the large time asymptotic behavior of solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which modifies and simplifies the previous ones (Barles and Souganidis, 2000; Barles, Ishii and Mitake, 2012), under a refined "strict convexity" assumption on the Hamiltonians. Not only such "strict convexity" conditions generalize the corresponding requirements on the Hamiltonians in Barles and Souganidis (2000), but also one of the most refined our conditions covers the situation studied in Namah and Roquejoffre (1999).
We introduce the concept of k-strictly convexity to describe the accurate convexity of convex domains some directions of which boundary may be flat. Basing this accurate convexity, we construct sub-solutions the Dirichlet problem for some degenerate-singular Monge-Ampère type equations and prove the sharp boundary estimates for convex viscosity solutions of the problem. As a result, we obtain the optimal global Hölder regularity of the convex viscosity solutions.
We study the solvability of second boundary value problems of fourth order equations of Abreu type arising from approximation of convex functionals whose Lagrangians depend on the gradient variable, subject to a convexity constraint. These functionals arise in different scientific disciplines such as Newton's problem of minimal resistance in physics and monopolist's problem in economics. The right hand sides of our Abreu type equations are quasilinear expressions of second order; they are highly singular and a priori just measures. However, our analysis in particular shows that minimizers of t…
In this paper, we prove the existence of classical solutions to second boundary value prob- lems for generated prescribed Jacobian equations, as recently developed by the second author, thereby obtaining extensions of classical solvability of optimal transportation problems to problems arising in near field geometric optics. Our results depend in particular on a priori second derivative estimates recently established by the authors under weak co-dimension one convexity hypotheses on the associated matrix functions with respect to the gradient variables, (A3w). We also avoid domain deformations…
In this paper, we study the following semilinear Schrödinger equation with periodic coefficient: $$-\triangle u +V(x)u=f(x,u), u\in H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{N}).$$ The functional corresponding to this equation possesses strongly indefinite structure. The nonlinear term $f(x,t)$ satisfies some superlinear growth conditions and need not be odd or increasing strictly in $t$. Using a new variational reduction method and a generalized Morse theory, we proved that this equation has infinitely many geometrically different solutions. Furthermore, if the solutions of this equation under some energy level are …
For the $p$-harmonic function with strictly convex level sets, we find a test function which comes from the combination of the norm of gradient of the $p$-harmonic function and the smallest principal curvature of the level sets of $p$-harmonic function. We prove that this curvature function is convex with respect to the height of the $p$-harmonic function. This test function is an affine function of the height when the $p$-harmonic function is the $p$-Green function on the ball. For the minimal graph, we obtain a similar results.
It is interesting to study the stress concentration between two adjacent stiff inclusions in composite materials, which can be modeled by the Lamé system with partially infinite coefficients. To overcome the difficulty from the lack of maximum principle for elliptic systems, we use the energy method and an iteration technique to study the gradient estimates of the solution. We first find a novel phenomenon that the gradient will not blow up any more once these two adjacent inclusions fail to be locally relatively strictly convex, namely, the top and bottom boundaries of the narrow region are p…
In this note we revisit previous Pogorelov type interior and global second derivative estimates of the author, F. Jiang and J. Liu for solutions of Monge-Amp`ere type partial differential equations. Taking account of recent strict convexity regularity results of Guillen, Kitagawa and Rankin, and following our earlier work in the optimal transportation case, we remove the monotonicity assumptions in the more general case of generated Jacobian equations and consequently in the subsequent application to classical solvability and global regularity for second boundary value problems.
The Neumann--Poincaré operator defined on a smooth surface has a sequence of eigenvalues converging to zero, and the single layer potentials of the corresponding eigenfunctions, called plasmons, decay to zero, i.e., are localized on the surface, as the index of the sequence $j$ tends to infinity. We investigate quantitatively the surface localization of the plasmons in three dimensions. The results are threefold. We first prove that on smooth bounded domains of general shape the sequence of plasmons converges to zero off the boundary surface almost surely at the rate of $j^{-1/2}$. We then pro…
