Some basic notions and results in Topological Dynamics are extended to continuous groupoid actions in topological spaces. We focus mainly on recurrence properties. Besides results that are analogous to the classical case of group actions, but which have to be put in the right setting, there are also new phenomena. Mostly for groupoids whose source map is not open (and there are many), some properties which were equivalent for group actions become distinct in this general framework; we illustrate this with various counterexamples.
This is a survey of the recent development of the study of topological full groups of etale groupoids on the Cantor set. Etale groupoids arise from dynamical systems, e.g. actions of countable discrete groups, equivalence relations. Minimal Z-actions, minimal Z^N-actions and one-sided shifts of finite type are basic examples. We are interested in algebraic, geometric and analytic properties of topological full groups. More concretely, we discuss simplicity of commutator subgroups, abelianization, finite generation, cohomological finiteness properties, amenability, the Haagerup property, and so…
We prove two isomorphism-invariance theorems for groupoids associated with ultragraphs. These theorems characterize ultragraphs for which the topological full group of an associated groupoid is an isomorphism invariant. These results extend those of graph groupoids to ultragraph groupoids while providing another concrete example where the topological full group of a groupoid is a complete isomorphism invariant.
To an inverse semigroup, we associate an étale groupoid such that its actions on topological spaces are equivalent to actions of the inverse semigroup. Both the object and the arrow space of this groupoid are non-Hausdorff. We show that this construction provides an adjoint functor to the functor that maps a groupoid to its inverse semigroup of bisections, where we turn étale groupoids into a category using algebraic morphisms. We also discuss how to recover a groupoid from this inverse semigroup.
Topological groupoids admit various types of morphisms. We push these notions to the level of continuous groupoid actions to obtain various types of groupoid action morphisms. Some dynamical properties and their relation to these morphisms are studied. Among them are recurrence, various forms of transitivity, minimality, limit, recurrent, periodic and almost periodic points.
Two conjectures about homology groups, K-groups and topological full groups of minimal etale groupoids on Cantor sets are formulated. We verify these conjectures for many examples of etale groupoids including products of etale groupoids arising from one-sided shifts of finite type. Furthermore, we completely determine when these product groupoids are mutually isomorphic. Also, the abelianization of their topological full groups are computed. They are viewed as generalizations of the higher dimensional Thompson groups.
For almost finite groupoids, we study how their homology groups reflect dynamical properties of their topological full groups. It is shown that two clopen subsets of the unit space has the same class in H_0 if and only if there exists an element in the topological full group which maps one to the other. It is also shown that a natural homomorphism, called the index map, from the topological full group to H_1 is surjective and any element of the kernel can be written as a product of four elements of finite order. In particular, the index map induces a homomorphism from H_1 to K_1 of the groupoi…
We establish new characterizations for (pseudo)isometric extensions of topological dynamical systems. For such extensions, we also extend results about relatively invariant measures and Fourier analysis that were previously only known in the minimal case to a significantly larger class, including all transitive systems. To bypass the reliance on minimality of the classical approaches to isometric extensions via the Ellis semigroup, we show that extensions of topological dynamical systems can be described as groupoid actions and then adapt the concept of enveloping semigroups to construct a uni…

We consider self-similar actions of groupoids on the path spaces of finite directed graphs, and construct examples of such self-similar actions using a suitable notion of graph automaton. Self-similar groupoid actions have a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra and a Toeplitz algebra, both of which carry natural dynamics lifted from the gauge actions. We study the equilibrium states (the KMS states) on the resulting dynamical systems. Above a critical inverse temperature, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are parametrised by the traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid, and we describe a program…
We introduce a notion of topological property (T) for étale groupoids. This simultaneously generalizes Kazhdan's property (T) for groups and geometric property (T) for coarse spaces. One main goal is to use this property (T) to prove the existence of so-called Kazhdan projections in both maximal and reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras, and explore applications of this to exactness, K-exactness, and the Baum-Connes conjecture. We also study various examples, and discuss the relationship with other notions of property (T) for groupoids and with a-T-menability.
We study the topological full group of ample groupoids over locally compact spaces. We extend Matui's definition of the topological full group from the compact, to the locally compact case. We provide two general classes of groupoids for which the topological full group, as an abstract group, is a complete isomorphism invariant. Hereby extending Matui's Isomorphism Theorem. As an application, we study graph groupoids and their topological full groups, and obtain sharper results for this class. The machinery developed in this process is used to prove an embedding theorem for ample groupoids, ak…
We define a bundle over a totally disconnected set such that each fiber is homeomorphic to a fractal blowup. We prove that there is a natural action of a Renault-Deaconu groupoid on our fractafold bundle and that the resulting action groupoid is a Renault-Deaconu groupoid itself. We also show that when the bundle is locally compact the associated $C^*$-algebra is primitive and has a densely defined lower-semicontinuous trace.
Given a self-similar groupoid action $(G,E)$ on a finite directed graph, we prove some properties of the corresponding ample groupoid of germs $\mathcal G(G,E)$. We study the analogue of the Higman-Thompson group associated to $(G,E)$ using $G$-tables and relate it to the topological full group of $\mathcal G(G,E)$, which is isomorphic to a subgroup of unitaries in the algebra $C^*(G,E)$. After recalling some concepts in groupoid homology, we discuss the Matui's AH-conjecture for $\mathcal G(G,E)$ in some particular cases.
Given a partial action $α$ of a groupoid $G$ on a ring $R$, we study the associated partial skew groupoid ring $R \rtimes_α G$, which carries a natural $G$-grading. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the $G$-invariant ideals of $R$ and the graded ideals of the $G$-graded ring $R \rtimes_αG.$ We provide sufficient conditions for primeness, and necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicity of $R \rtimes_αG.$ We show that every ideal of $R \rtimes_αG$ is graded if, and only if, $α$ has the residual intersection property. Furthermore, if $α$ is induced by a topological …
Given an inverse semigroup $S$ endowed with a partial action on a topological space $X$, we construct a groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ in a manner similar to Exel's groupoid of germs, and similarly a partial action of $S$ on an algebra $A$ induces a crossed product $A\rtimes S$. We then prove, in the setting of partial actions, that if $X$ is locally compact Hausdorff and zero-dimensional, then the Steinberg algebra of the groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ is isomorphic to the crossed product $A_R(X)\rtimes S$, where $A_R(X)$ is the Steinberg algebra of $X$. We also prove that the converse holds,…
