We propose a gravity dual description of the path-integral optimization in conformal field theories arXiv:1703.00456, using Hartle-Hawking wave functions in anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that the maximization of the Hartle-Hawking wave function is equivalent to the path-integral optimization procedure. Namely, the variation of the wave function leads to a constraint, equivalent to the Neumann boundary condition on a bulk slice, whose classical solutions reproduce metrics from the path-integral optimization in conformal field theories. After taking the boundary limit of the semi-classical Hartle-Hawking wave function, we reproduce the path-integral complexity action in two dimensions as well as its higher and lower dimensional generalizations. We also discuss an emergence of holographic time from conformal field theory path-integrals.
It is shown that, for a de Sitter Universe, the Hartle-Hawking (HH) wave function can be obtained in a simple way starting from the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) line element of cosmological equations. An oscillator having imaginary time is indeed derived starting from the Hamiltonian obtaining the HH condition. This proposes again some crucial matter on the meaning of complex time in cosmology. In order to overcome such difficulties, we propose an interpretation of the HH framework based on de Sitter Projective Holography.
It is shown that the Hartle-Hawking state of a scalar field is a maximum of entanglement entropy in the space of pure quantum states satisfying the condition that backreaction is finite. In other words, the Hartle-Hawking state is a curved-space analogue of the EPR state, which is also a maximum of entanglement entropy.
The purpose of this note is to establish the basic properties--- regularity at the horizon, time independence, and thermality--- of the generalized Hartle-Hawking vacua defined in static spacetimes with bifurcate Killing horizon admitting a regular Euclidean section. These states, for free or interacting fields, are defined by a path integral on half the Euclidean section. The emphasis is on generality and the arguments are simple but formal.
A real tunneling solution is an instanton for the Hartle-Hawking path integral with vanishing extrinsic curvature (vanishing ``momentum'') at the boundary. Since the final momentum is fixed, its conjugate cannot be specified freely; consequently, such an instanton will contribute to the wave function at only one or a few isolated spatial geometries. I show that these geometries are the extrema of the Hartle-Hawking wave function in the semiclassical approximation, and provide some evidence that with a suitable choice of time parameter, these extrema are the maxima of the wave function at a fix…
We study self-interacting massive scalar field theory in static spacetimes with a bifurcate Killing horizon and a wedge reflection. In this theory the Hartle-Hawking state is defined to have the $N$-point correlation functions obtained by analytically continuing those in the Euclidean theory, whereas the double Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) state is the pure state invariant under the Killing flow and the wedge reflection which is regular on the bifurcate Killing horizon and reduces to the thermal state at the Hawking temperature in each of the two static regions. We demonstrate in the Schwinger-…
In this work, a relation is found between state dependence of bulk observables in the gauge/gravity correspondence and nonperturbative diffeomorphism invariance. Certain bulk constraints, such as the black hole information paradox, appear to obstruct the existence of a linear map from bulk operators to exact CFT operators that is valid over the entire expected range of validity of the bulk effective theory. By formulating the bulk gravitational physics in the Hartle-Hawking framework to address these nonperturbative IR questions, I will demonstrate, in the context of eternal AdS-Schwarzschild,…
Within the third quantisation formalism, we find solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt in terms of two sets of modes that can be identified with the Hartle-Hawking's no boundary condition and with the Vilenkin's tunneling boundary condition, respectively. The two sets of modes are related by a Bogolyubov transformation so the no boundary vacuum state turns out to be equivalent to a thermal distribution of tunnelling positive and negative modes representing, in a relative sense, universes and antiuniverses
We argue that non-perturbative $α'$ stringy effects render the Hartle-Hawking state associated with the $SL(2)/U(1)$ eternal black hole singular at the horizon. We discuss implications of this observation on firewalls in string theory.
In this presentation, we first describe the Hartle-Hawking wave function in the Euclidean path integral approach. After we introduce perturbations to the background instanton solution, following the formalism developed by Halliwell-Hawking and Laflamme, one can obtain the scale-invariant power spectrum for small-scales. We further emphasize that the Hartle-Hawking wave function can explain the large-scale power suppression by choosing suitable potential parameters, where this will be a possible window to confirm or falsify models of quantum cosmology. Finally, we further comment on possible fu…
Given the observed cosmic acceleration, Leonard Susskind has presented the following argument against the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal for the quantum state of the universe: It should most likely lead to a nearly empty large de Sitter universe, rather than to early rapid inflation. Even if one adds the condition of observers, they are most likely to form by quantum fluctuations in de Sitter and therefore not see the structure that we observe. Here I present my own amplified version of this argument and consider possible resolutions, one of which seems to imply that inflation expands the…
Quantum vacua are constructed for a time-symmetric cosmology describing closed string tachyon condensation in two-dimensional string theory. Due to the Euclidean periodicity of the solution, and despite its time dependence, we are able to construct thermal states at discrete values of the temperature. The asymptotic thermal Green functions and stress energy tensor are computed and found to have an intriguing resemblance to those in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum of a black hole.
We review some recent results concerning the Hartle--Hawking wavefunction of the universe. We focus on pure Einstein theory of gravity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We carefully implement the gauge-fixing procedure for the minisuperspace path integral, by identifying the single modulus and by using diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. Field redefinitions of the scale factor yield different prescriptions for computing the no-boundary ground-state wavefunction. They give rise to an infinite set of ground-state wavefunctions, each satisfyin…
Recent developments in ``Einstein Dehn filling'' allow the construction of infinitely many Einstein manifolds that have different topologies but are geometrically close to each other. Using these results, we show that for many spatial topologies, the Hartle-Hawking wave function for a spacetime with a negative cosmological constant develops sharp peaks at certain calculable geometries. The peaks we find are all centered on spatial metrics of constant negative curvature, suggesting a new mechanism for obtaining local homogeneity in quantum cosmology.
We test the Maldacena proposal for the Hartle-Hawking late time quantum state in an asymptotically de Sitter universe. In particular, we calculate the on-shell action for scalar instantons on the southern hemisphere of the four-sphere and compare the result with the renormalized on-shell action for scalar instantons in EAdS$_4$. The two results agree provided the corresponding instanton moduli as well as the curvature radii are analytically continued. The instanton solutions in de Sitter are novel and satisfy mixed boundary conditions. We also point out that instantons on $S^4$ calculate the r…
We numerically compute renormalized expectation values of quadratic operators in a quantum field theory (QFT) of free Dirac fermions in curved two-dimensional (Lorentzian) spacetime. First, we use a staggered-fermion discretization to generate a sequence of lattice theories yielding the desired QFT in the continuum limit. Numerically-computed lattice correlators are then used to approximate, through extrapolation, those in the continuum. Finally, we use so-called point-splitting regularization and Hadamard renormalization to remove divergences, and thus obtain finite, renormalized expectation …
We argue that the topological string partition function, which has been known to correspond to a wave-function, can be interpreted as an exact ``wave-function of the universe'' in the mini-superspace sector of physical superstring theory. This realizes the idea of Hartle and Hawking in the context of string theory, including all loop quantum corrections. The mini-superspace approximation is justified as an exact description of BPS quantities. Moreover this proposal leads to a conceptual explanation of the recent observation that the black hole entropy is the square of the topological string wa…
We re-examine the Hartle-Hawking wave function from the point of view of a quantum theory which starts from the connection representation and allows for off-shell non-constancy of $Λ$ (as in unimodular theory), with a concomitant dual relational time variable. By translating its structures to the metric representation we find a non-trivial inner product rendering wave packets of Hartle-Hawking waves normalizable and the time evolution unitary; however, the implied probability measure differs significantly from the naive $|ψ|^2$. In contrast with the (monochromatic) Hartle-Hawking wave function…
Analytic semiclassical backreaction of a Schwarzschild black hole in a finite cavity: horizon shift, temperature renormalization, and canonical stability in the Hartle-Hawking State
It is well-known that gravitationally induced vacuum polarization often violates the point-wise energy conditions and sometimes violates the averaged energy conditions. In this paper I begin a systematic attack on the question of where and by how much the various energy conditions are violated. I work in the test-field limit, and focus on conformally coupled massless scalar fields in Schwarzschild spacetime, using the Hartle--Hawking vacuum. I invoke a mixture of analytical and numerical techniques, and critically compare the qualitative behaviour to be expected from the Page approximation wit…
In most attempts to compute the Hartle-Hawking ``wave function of the universe'' in Euclidean quantum gravity, two important approximations are made: the path integral is evaluated in a saddle point approximation, and only the leading (least action) extremum is taken into account. In (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant, the second assumption is shown to lead to incorrect results: although the leading extremum gives the most important single contribution to the path integral, topologically inequivalent instantons with larger actions occur in great enough numbers to p…
If the Hartle-Hawking wave function is the correct boundary condition of our universe, the history of our universe will be well approximated by an instanton. Although this instanton should be classicalized at infinity, as long as we are observing a process of each history, we may detect a non-classicalized part of field combinations. When we apply it to a dark energy model, this non-classicalized part of fields can be well embedded to a quintessence and a phantom model, i.e., a quintom model. Because of the property of complexified instantons, the phantomness will be naturally free from a big …
Recent results of Hartle-Hawking wave functions on asymptotic dS boundaries show non-normalizability, while the bulk origin is not clear. This paper attempts to addresse this problem by studying (Kerr-)dS_3 cosmology in Einstein gravity deformed by a minimally coupled scalar field. Various saddle-point contributions exp[i(saddle-point action)] to the Hartle-Hawking wave functions are computed with mini-superspace formalism. The saddle-point actions are first obtained in the spacetime bulks by direct computation, then on the asymptotic dS boundary by holographic renormalization. It is found tha…
The Euclidean path integral is well approximated by instantons. If instantons are dynamical, then instantons are necessarily complexified. These fuzzy instantons can have various physical applications. In slow-roll inflation models, fuzzy instantons can explain the probability distribution of the initial conditions of the universe. Even though the potential shape does not satisfy the slow-roll conditions following the swampland criteria, still the fuzzy instantons can explain the origin of the universe. If we extend the Euclidean path integral beyond the no-boundary proposal, we may study fuzz…
It is known that the no-boundary proposal in the traditional Einstein gravity does not prefer inflation, that is, the probability of realizing a large number of e-folds is exponentially suppressed. This situation may be changed drastically in a class of nonlinear massive gravity theories recently proposed by deRham, Gabadadze and Tolley, called dRGT massive gravity. We show that the contribution from the massive gravity sector can enhance the probability of a large number of e-folds substantially for a sufficiently large mass parameter mg comparable to the Hubble parameter during inflation, sa…
In this work we elaborate on holographic description of the path-integral optimization in conformal field theories (CFT) using Hartle-Hawking wave functions in Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We argue that the maximization of the Hartle-Hawking wave function is equivalent to the path-integral optimization procedure in CFT. In particular, we show that metrics that maximize gravity wave functions computed in particular holographic geometries, precisely match those derived in the path-integral optimization procedure for their dual CFT states. The present work is a detailed version of \cite{Boruch:2020…
We study the Hawking effect in terms of the geometric phase acquired by a two-level atom as a result of coupling to vacuum fluctuations outside a Schwarzschild black hole in a gedanken experiment. We treat the atom in interaction with a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields as an open quantum system, whose dynamics is governed by a master equation obtained by tracing over the field degrees of freedom. The nonunitary effects of this system are examined by analyzing the geometric phase for the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacua respectively. We find, for all the three cases,…
We show that the Chern-Simons (CS) state when reduced to mini-superspace is the Fourier dual of the Hartle-Hawking (HH) and Vilenkin (V) wave-functions of the Universe. This is to be expected, given that the former and latter solve the same constraint equation, written in terms of conjugate variables (loosely the expansion factor and the Hubble parameter). A number of subtleties in the mapping, related to the contour of integration of the connection, shed light on the issue of boundary conditions in quantum cosmology. If we insist on a {\it real} Hubble parameter, then only the HH wave-functio…
We study, by separately calculating the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the atomic energy level shift, the Lamb shift of a static two-level atom interacting with real massless scalar fields in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuums outside a Schwarzschild black hole. We find that in the Boulware vacuum, the Lamb shift gets a correction arising as a result of the backscattering of vacuum field modes off the space-time curvature, which is reminiscent of the correction to the Lamb shift induced by the presence of cavities. However, when the Unruh and Hartle-…
We point out how to construct the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state for the minimaly coupled massless quantum real scalar field in the two dimensional BTZ black hole. We also calculate the renormalized energy-momentum tensor for the same field in the eternal CGHS black hole, AdS, Robertson-Walker and Rindler spacetime in two dimensions. We also discuss the Boulware, the Hartle-Hawking-Israel and the Unruh state for the eternal CGHS black hole.
We evaluate the tunneling and Hartle-Hawking wave functions on S^1 x S^2 boundaries in Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant. In the large overall volume limit the classical predictions of both wave functions include an ensemble of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. We show that the Hartle-Hawking tree level measure on the classical ensemble converges in the small S^1 limit. A divergence in this regime can be identified in the tunneling state. However we trace this to the contribution of an unphysical branch of saddle points associated with negative mass black holes. Using a…
The spontaneous excitation of a two-level atom held static outside a four dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and in interaction with a massless scalar field in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuum is investigated and the contributions of the vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy are calculated separately. We find that for the Boulware vacuum, the spontaneous excitation does not occur and the ground state atoms are stable, while the spontaneous emission rate for excited atoms in the Boulware vacuum, which is well-behaved at the eve…
We compare the canonical quantization and the effective action method to derive expectation values of the stress energy tensor for scalar fields conformally coupled to a 2D Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. Particular attention is devoted to the thermal equilibrium Hartle-Hawking state where the striking disagreement of the results may be reconduced to the incomplete knowledge of the effective action. We show how to reconcile the two procedures and find physically meaningful analytical approximate expressions for the stress tensor in the Hartle-Hawking state.
We study Hartle-Hawking-like states of quantum field theories on asymptotically AdS black hole backgrounds, with particular regard to the phase structure of interacting theories. By a suitable analytic continuation we show that the equilibrium dynamics of field theories on large asymptotically AdS black holes can be related to the low temperature states of the same field theory on the AdS soliton (or pure AdS) background. This allows us to gain insight into Hartle-Hawking-like states on large-radius Schwarzschild- or rotating-AdS black holes. Furthermore, we exploit the AdS/CFT correspondence …
The analytic expression obtained in the preceding project for the massless conformal scalar propagator in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state for small values of the Schwarzschild radial coordinate above $ r = 2M$ is analytically extended into the interior of the Schwarzschild black hole. The result of the analytical extension coincides with the exact propagator for a small range of values of the Schwarzschild radial coordinate below $ r = 2M$ and is an analytic expression which manifestly features its dependence on the background space-time geometry. This feature as well as the absence of any ass…
The quantum mechanical structure of Schwarzschild black hole is probed, in the mini super spacetime, by means of a non-singular minimal uncertainty Hartle-Hawking wave packet. The Compton width of the microstate probability distribution is translated into a thermal Hawking broadening of the mass spectrum. The statistical entropy is analytically calculated using the Fowler prescription. While the exact Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is recovered at the semi classical limit, the accompanying logarithmic tail gives rise to a Planck size minimal entropy black wave packet.
We elucidate the nature of the correction to the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction presented in hep-th/$0505104$ and hep-th/$0406107$. The correction comes from the quantum fluctuation of the metric that spontaneously breaks the classical deSitter symmetry. This converts the tunneling from nothing to a deSitter-like universe via a $S^{4}$ instantion to that via a barrel instanton, which is bounded from below. Its generalization to 10 dimensional spacetime allows us to find the preferred sites in the stringy cosmic landscape. We comment on how some of the problems of the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction a…
The vacuum activity generated by the curvature of the Schwarzschild black-hole geometry close to the event horizon is studied for the case of a massless, conformal scalar field. The associated approximation to the unknown, exact propagator in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state for small values of the radial coordinate above $ r = 2M$ results in an analytic expression which manifestly features its dependence on the background space-time geometry. This approximation to the Hartle-Hawking scalar propagator on the Schwarzschild black-hole geometry is, for that matter, distinct from all other. It is s…
The Hartle-Hawking state of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at strong coupling and large $N$ on a fixed black hole background has two proposed gravitational duals: a black funnel or a black droplet. We construct the black funnel solutions that are dual to the Hartle-Hawking state on a Schwarzschild black hole and on a class of three-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole backgrounds. We compute their holographic stress tensor and argue for the stability of these solutions.
We consider the definition of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states for quantum fields on black hole space-times. The properties of these states on a Schwarzschild black hole have been understood for many years, but neither of these states has a direct analogue on a Kerr black hole. We show how superradiant modes play an important role in the definition of quantum states on Kerr. Superradiance is also present on static black hole space-times, in particular for a charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We explore whether analogues of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states exis…
We investigate the generalized second law for two-dimensional black holes in equilibrium (Hartle-Hawking) and nonequilibrium (Unruh) with the heat bath surrounding the black holes. We obtain a simple expression for the change of total entropy in terms of covariant thermodynamic variables, which is valid not only for the Hartle-Hawking state but also for the Unruh state up to leading order, without assuming a quasi-stationary evolution of the black holes. Using this expression, it is shown that the rate of local entropy production is non-negative in the two-dimensional black hole systems.
Our universe is born of a tunnelling from nothing in quantum cosmology. Nothing here can be interpreted as a state with zero entropy. As a reliable modification of the Hartle-Hawking wave function of the universe, the improved Hartle-Hawking wave function proposed by Firouzjahi, Sarangi and Tye gives many interesting observational consequences which we explore in this paper. Fruitful observations are obtained for chaotic inflation, including a detectable spatial curvature and a negligible tunnelling probability for eternal chaotic inflation. And we find that the tensor-scalar ratio and the spa…
We show that the entropy resulting from the counting of microstates of non extremal black holes using field theory duals of string theories can be interpreted as arising from entanglement. The conditions for making such an interpretation consistent are discussed. First, we interpret the entropy (and thermodynamics) of spacetimes with non degenerate, bifurcating Killing horizons as arising from entanglement. We use a path integral method to define the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state in such spacetimes and discuss explicitly its entangled nature and its relation to the geometry. If string theory on …
We study quantum cosmology of the $2D$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity with $Λ>0$ and calculate the Hartle-Hawking (HH) wave function for this model in the minisuperspace framework. Our approach is guided by the observation that the JT dynamics can be mapped exactly onto that of the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) model describing a homogeneous universe with spatial sections of $S^1\times S^2$ topology. This allows us to establish a JT-KS correspondence between the wave functions of the models. We obtain the semiclassical Hartle-Hawking wave function by evaluating the path integral with appropriate bounda…
We discuss a dramatic difference between the description of the quantum creation of an open universe using the Hartle-Hawking wave function and the tunneling wave function. Recently Hawking and Turok have found that the Hartle-Hawking wave function leads to a universe with Omega = 0.01, which is much smaller that the observed value of Omega > 0.3. Galaxies in such a universe would be about $10^{10^8}$ light years away from each other, so the universe would be practically structureless. We will argue that the Hartle-Hawking wave function does not describe the probability of the universe creatio…
Building on a pair of earlier papers, I investigate the various point-wise and averaged energy conditions for the quantum stress-energy tensor corresponding to a conformally-coupled massless scalar field in the in the (1+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Because the stress-energy tensors are analytically known, I can get exact results for the Hartle--Hawking, Boulware, and Unruh vacua. This exactly solvable model serves as a useful sanity check on my (3+1)-dimensional investigations wherein I had to resort to a mixture of analytic approximations and numerical techniques. Key results in (…
At the minisuperspace level of homogeneous models, the bare probability for a classical universe has a huge peak at small universes for the Hartle-Hawking `no-boundary' wavefunction, in contrast to the suppression at small universes for the `tunneling' wavefunction. If the probability distribution is cut off at the Planck density (say), this suggests that the former quantum state is inconsistent with our observations. For inhomogeneous models in which stochastic inflation can occur, it is known that the idea of including a volume factor in the observational probability distribution can lead to…
Realising the no-boundary proposal of Hartle and Hawking as a consistent gravitational path integral has been a long-standing puzzle. In particular, it was demonstrated by Feldbrugge et al. that the sum over all universes starting from zero size results in an unstable saddle point geometry. Here we show that in the context of gravity with a positive cosmological constant, path integrals with a specific family of Robin boundary conditions overcome this problem. These path integrals are manifestly convergent and are approximated by stable Hartle-Hawking saddle point geometries. The price to pay …
In minimally coupled scalar field theories with a potential of the slow-roll type, we give a detailed description of the complex $O(4)$-symmetric solutions to Einstein's equations on the four-ball which contribute to the no-boundary amplitude $Ψ_\textsf{NB}(b,χ)$ for a closed universe to contain a round three-sphere spatial slice of size $b$ covered homogeneously with the scalar field at value $χ$. Our derivation demonstrates a result anticipated by Hartle, Hawking and Hertog in Phys. Rev. D 77 (2008) 123537 [arXiv:0803.1663], sharpens Vilenkin's result in Phys. Rev. D 37 (1988) 888 in the cla…
It is well known through the work of Majumdar, Papapetrou, Hartle, and Hawking that the coupled Einstein and Maxwell equations admit a static multiple blackhole solution representing a balanced equilibrium state of finitely many point charges. This is a result of the exact cancellation of gravitational attraction and electric repulsion under an explicit condition on the mass and charge ratio. The resulting system of particles, known as an extremely charged dust, gives rise to examples of spacetimes with naked singularities. In this paper, we consider the continuous limit of the Majumdar--Papap…
