The quantum mechanical structure of Schwarzschild black hole is probed, in the mini super spacetime, by means of a non-singular minimal uncertainty Hartle-Hawking wave packet. The Compton width of the microstate probability distribution is translated into a thermal Hawking broadening of the mass spectrum. The statistical entropy is analytically calculated using the Fowler prescription. While the exact Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is recovered at the semi classical limit, the accompanying logarithmic tail gives rise to a Planck size minimal entropy black wave packet.
We re-examine the Hartle-Hawking wave function from the point of view of a quantum theory which starts from the connection representation and allows for off-shell non-constancy of $Λ$ (as in unimodular theory), with a concomitant dual relational time variable. By translating its structures to the metric representation we find a non-trivial inner product rendering wave packets of Hartle-Hawking waves normalizable and the time evolution unitary; however, the implied probability measure differs significantly from the naive $|ψ|^2$. In contrast with the (monochromatic) Hartle-Hawking wave function…
We study the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) modified time evolution for the width of wave-packets for a scalar potential. Free particle case is solved exactly where the wave-packet broadening is modified by a coupling between the GUP parameter and higher order moments in the probability distribution in momentum space. We consider two popular forms of deformations widely used in the literature - one of which modifies the commutator with a quadratic term in momentum, while the other modifies it with terms both linear and quadratic in momentum. Unlike the standard case, satisfying Heisen…
Here we propose a minimal analog gravity setup and suggest how to select two surface gravity wave packets in order to mimic some key aspects of Hawking radiation from the horizon of non-rotating black holes. Our proposed setup, unlike the scattering problem conventionally studied, constitutes of a constant mean flow over a flat bathymetry, in which the two wave packets possess the same amount of wave action but equal and opposite (sign) amount of energy, thereby mimicking virtual particles created out of near horizon vacuum fluctuations. Attention is given to the physical mechanism relating to…
We study the propagation of null rays and massless fields in a black hole fluctuating geometry. The metric fluctuations are induced by a small oscillating incoming flux of energy. The flux also induces black hole mass oscillations around its average value. We assume that the metric fluctuations are described by a statistical ensemble. The stochastic variables are the phases and the amplitudes of Fourier modes of the fluctuations. By averaging over these variables, we obtain an effective propagation for massless fields which is characterized by a critical length defined by the amplitude of the …
In the Einstein-Cartan framework the torsion-free conditions arise within the Hamiltonian treatment as second-class constraints. The standard strategy is to solve these constraints, eliminating the torsion from the classical theory, before quantization. Here we advocate leaving the torsion inside the other constraints before quantization, leading at first to wave functions that can be called ``kinematical'' with regards to the torsion, but not the other constraints. The torsion-free condition can then be imposed as a condition upon the physical wave packets one constructs, satisfying the usual…
A quantum Schwarzschild black hole is described, at the mini super spacetime level, by a non-singular wave packet composed of plane wave eigenstates of the momentum Dirac-conjugate to the mass operator. The entropy of the mass spectrum acquires then independent contributions from the average mass and the width. Hence, Bekenstein's area entropy is formulated using the $\langle \text{mass}^2 \rangle$ average, leaving the $\langle \text{mass} \rangle$ average to set the Hawking temperature. The width function peaks at the Planck scale for an elementary (zero entropy, zero free energy) micro black…
In this paper, a new quantum mechanical method to extract energy from black holes with contracting horizons is proposed. The method is based on a gedanken experiment on quantum energy teleportation (QET), which has been recently proposed in quantum information theory. We consider this QET protocol for N massless fields in near-horizon regions of large-mass black holes with near-horizon geometry described by the Minkowski metric. For each field, a two-level spin is strongly coupled with the local quantum fluctuation outside the horizon during a short time period. After the measurement of N fiel…
Black hole evaporation is studied using wave packets for the modes. These allow for approximate frequency and time resolution. The leading order late time behavior gives the well known Hawking radiation that is independent of how the black hole formed. The focus here is on the higher order terms and the rate at which they damp at late times. Some of these terms carry information about how the black hole formed. A general argument is given which shows that the damping is significantly slower (power law) than what might be naively expected from a stationary phase approximation (exponential). Thi…
Sijie Gao has recently investigated Hawking radiation from spherically symmetrical gravitational collapse to an extremal R-N black hole for a real scalar field. Especially he estimated the upper bound for the expected number of particles in any wave packet belonging to $\mathcal{H}_{out}$ spontaneously produced from the state $|0>_{in}$, which confirms the traditional belief that extremal black holes do not radiate particles. Making some modifications, we demonstrate that the analysis can go through for a charged scalar field.
We consider the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and construct a wave packet that exhibits the Hawking radiation. We find the average of the number of the created particles with respect to the $|0\rangle$ vacuum state and with respect to Unruh type vacuum state. The average of the number operator in the $|0\rangle$ vacuum state consists of two terms: one is related to the Hawking radiation and the second is not related. We use the same construction for the extremal RN black hole and get that the average of the number operator with respect to the $|0\rangle$ vacuum state is also a sum…
We discuss the behaviour of massive modes near a horizon based on a study of the dispersion relation and wave packet simulations of the Klein-Gordon equation. We point out an apparent paradox between two (in principle equivalent) pictures of black hole evaporation through Hawking radiation. In the picture in which the evaporation is due to the emission of positive-energy modes, one immediately obtains a threshold for the emission of massive particles. In the picture in which the evaporation is due to the absorption of negative-energy modes, such a threshold apparently does not exist. We resolv…
We study the Hawking radiation for the acoustic black hole. In the beginning we follow the outline of T.Jacobson but then we use a different $2+1$ vacuum state similar to the vacuum state constructed by W.Unruh. We also use a special form of the wave packets. The focus of the paper is to treat the 2 dimensional case, in particular, the case when the radial and angular velocity are variable.
Massive particles are radiated from black holes through the Hawking mechanism together with the more familiar radiation of massless particles. For $E >= m$, the emission rate is identical to the massless case. But $E < m$ particles can also tunnel across the horizon. A study of the dispersion relation and wave packet simulations show that their classical trajectory is similar to that of a boomerang. The tunneling formalism is used to calculate the probability for detecting such $E < m$ particles, for a Schwarzschild black hole of astrophysical size or in an analogue gravity experiment, as a fu…
The most obvious obstacle behind a direct test of Quantum Gravity (QG) is its energy scale ($10^{19}$ GeV), which remains well outside of any human made machine. The next best possible approach is to provide indirect tests on effective theories of QG which can be performed in a lower energy scale. This paper is aimed in this direction, and shows a promising path to test the existence of the fundamental minimal length scale of Nature by measuring the dispersion of free, large molecular wave-packets. The existence of the minimal length is believed to be the reason for a modified commutation rela…
Inspired by the condensed matter analogues of black holes (a.k.a. dumb holes), we study Hawking radiation in the presence of a modified dispersion relation which becomes super-luminal at large wave-numbers. In the usual stationary coordinates $(t,x)$, one can describe the asymptotic evolution of the wave-packets in WKB, but this WKB approximation breaks down in the vicinity of the horizon, thereby allowing for a mixing between initial and final creation and annihilation operators. Thus, one might be tempted to identify this point where WKB breaks down with the moment of particle creation. Howe…
In homogeneous universes the propagation of quantum fields gives rise to pair creation of quanta with opposite momenta. When computing expectation values of operators, the correlations between these quanta are averaged out and no space-time structure is obtained. In this article, by an appropriate use of wave packets, we reveal the space-time structure of these correlations. We show that every pair emerges from vacuum configurations which are torn apart so as to give rise to two semi-classical currents: that carried by the particle and that of its `partner'. The partner's current lives behind …
The retrieval of black hole information was recently presented in two interesting proposals in the 'Hawking Radiation' conference: a revised version by G. 't Hooft of a proposal he initially suggested 20 years ago and, a new proposal by S. Hawking. Both proposals address the problem of black hole information loss at the classical level and derive an expression for the scattering matrix. The former uses gravitation back reaction of incoming particles that imprints its information on the outgoing modes. The latter uses supertranslation symmetry of horizons to relate a phase delay of the outgoing…
This work introduces a synergistic combination of analytical methods and numerical simulations to study the propagation of weak wave-packet modes in an optical medium containing the analog of a pair white-black hole. We apply our tools to analyze several aspects of the evolution, such as (i) the region of the parameter space where the analogy with the Hawking effect is on firm ground and (ii) the influence that ambient thermal noise and detector inefficiencies have on the observability of the Hawking effect. We find that aspects of the Hawking effect that are of quantum origin, such as quantum…
During the final stages of black hole evaporation, ultraviolet deviations from General Relativity eventually become dramatic, potentially affecting the end-state. We explore this problem by performing nonlinear simulations of wave packets in Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the only gravity theory with quadratic curvature terms which can be studied at fully nonperturbative level. Black holes in this theory have a minimum mass but also a nonvanishing temperature. This poses a puzzle concerning the final fate of Hawking evaporation in the presence of high-curvature nonperturbative effects.…
We present and contrast two distinct ways of including extremal black holes in a Lorentzian Hamiltonian quantization of spherically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell theory. First, we formulate the classical Hamiltonian dynamics with boundary conditions appropriate for extremal black holes only. The Hamiltonian contains no surface term at the internal infinity, for reasons related to the vanishing of the extremal hole surface gravity, and quantization yields a vanishing black hole entropy. Second, we give a Hamiltonian quantization that incorporates extremal black holes as a limiting case of nonextre…
We will discuss selected physical effects of spacetime geometry fluctuations, especially the operational signatures of geometry fluctuations and their effects on black hole horizons. The operational signatures which we discuss involve the effects of the fluctuations on images, and include luminosity variations, spectral line broadening and angular blurring. Our main interest will be in black hole horizon fluctuations, especially horizon fluctuations which have been enhanced above the vacuum level by gravitons or matter in squeezed states. We investigate whether these fluctuations can alter the…
Quantum cosmology uses a wave function to model the universe, but finding solutions for this poses a problem as it is difficult to define the boundary conditions or identify the correct path for a path integral. We begin the discussion by going over various proposals and look at how bubble universe nucleation can be used as an analogy for the tunneling wave function. We review how the Hartle-Hawking wave function and tunneling wave functions are equivalent. This leads into how the transition between the decelerated and accelerated expansion is formulated as a bounce in connection space. This i…
The production of Hawking radiation by a single horizon is not dependent on the high-frequency dispersion relation of the radiated field. When there are two horizons, however, Corley and Jacobson have shown that superluminal dispersion leads to an amplification of the particle production in the case of bosons. The analytic theory of this "black hole laser" process is quite complicated, so we provide some numerical results in the hope of aiding understanding of this interesting phenomenon. Specifically, we consider sonic horizons in a moving fluid. The theory of elementary excitations in a Bose…
I discuss the no hair principle, the recently found hairy solutions, generic properties of nonvacuum spherical static black holes, and the new no scalar hair theorems. I go into the generic phenomenon of superradiance, first uniform linear motion superradiance, then Kerr black hole superradiance, and finally general rotational superradiance and its possible applications in the laboratory. I show that the horizon area of a nearly stationary black hole can be regarded as an adiabatic invariant. This invariance suggests that quantum horizon area is quantized in multiples of a basic unit. Consider…
In a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time background we study the classical cosmological models in the context of recently proposed theory of nonlinear minimal massive bigravity. We show that in the presence of perfect fluid the classical field equations acquire contribution from the massive graviton as a cosmological term which is positive or negative depending on the dynamical competition between two scale factors of bigravity metrics. We obtain the classical field equations for flat and open universes in the ordinary and Schutz representation of perfect fluid. Focusing on the Schutz …
