The production of Hawking radiation by a single horizon is not dependent on the high-frequency dispersion relation of the radiated field. When there are two horizons, however, Corley and Jacobson have shown that superluminal dispersion leads to an amplification of the particle production in the case of bosons. The analytic theory of this "black hole laser" process is quite complicated, so we provide some numerical results in the hope of aiding understanding of this interesting phenomenon. Specifically, we consider sonic horizons in a moving fluid. The theory of elementary excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate provides an example of "superluminal" (Bogoliubov) dispersion, so we add Bogoliubov dispersion to Unruh's equation for sound in the fluid. A white-hole/black-hole horizon pair will then display black hole lasing. Numerical analysis of the evolution of a wave packet gives a clear picture of the amplification process. By utilizing the similarity of a radiating horizon to a parametric amplifier in quantum optics we also analyze the black hole laser as a quantum-optical network.
Based on the generalized uncertainty principle, we study the entropy of a four-dimensional black hole by counting degrees of freedom near the horizon and obtain the (finite) entropy proportional to the surface area at the horizon without a cutoff introduced in the conventional brick-wall method.
In recent years there has been some progress in the understanding of the global structure of stationary black hole space-times. In this paper we review some new results concerning the structure of stationary black hole space-times. In particular we prove a corrected version of the ``black hole rigidity theorem'', and we prove a uniqueness theorem for static black holes with degenerate connected horizons. This paper is an expanded version of a lecture given at the Journées relativistes in Ascona, May 1996.
The accretion of relativistic and non-relativistic fluids into a Reissner-Nordström black hole is revisited. The position of the critical point, the flow velocity at this point and the accretion rate are only slightly affected with respect to the Schwarzschild case when the fluid is non-relativistic. On the contrary, relativistic fluids cross the critical point always subsonically. In this case, the sonic point is located near the event horizon, which is crossed by the fluid with a velocity less than the light speed. The accretion rate of relativistic fluids by a Reissner-Nordström black hole …
It is widely believed that in the presence of a positive cosmological constant, heavy black holes can exhibit non-standard behaviour, namely there is a possibility that such objects would grow instead of evaporating. We point out that all those results (obtained in different frameworks) rely heavily upon the identification of the Nariai spacetime with the Schwarzschild--de Sitter (Kottler) black hole. In this note we argue that it is an incorrect assumption. As a result, previous treatments need revisiting. In particular, we show that within effective action approach, there is no solution corr…
By considering the generalized uncertainty principle, the degrees of freedom near the apparent horizon of Vaidya black hole are calculated with thin film model. The result shows that a cut-off can be introduced naturally rather than taking by hand. Furthermore, if the minimal length is chosen to be a specific value, the statistical entropy will satisfy the conventional area law at the horizon, which might reveal some deep things of the minimal length.
The mass inflation phenomenon implies that black hole interiors are unstable due to a back-reaction divergence of the perturbed black hole mass function at the Cauchy horizon. Weak point in the standard mass inflation calculations is in a fallacious using of the global Cauchy horizon as a place for the maximal growth of the back-reaction perturbations instead of the local inner apparent horizon. It is derived the new spherically symmetric back-reaction solution for two counter-streaming light-like fluxes near the inner apparent horizon of the charged black hole by taking into account its separ…
We revisit the classical stability of Schwarzschild black hole in fourth-order theories of gravity. On the contrary of the stability of this black hole, it turns out that the linearized perturbations exhibit unstable modes featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of five-dimensional black string. This shows clearly an instability of black hole in fourth-order gravity with $α=-β/3$.
We investigate the Gauss-Bonnet black hole in five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetimes (GBAdS). We analyze all thermodynamic quantities of the GBAdS, which is characterized by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $c$ and mass $M$, comparing with those of the Born-Infeld-AdS (BIAdS), Reissner-Norström-AdS black holes (RNAdS), Schwarzschild-AdS (SAdS), and BTZ black holes. For $c<0$ we cannot obtain the black hole with positively definite thermodynamic quantities of mass, temperature, and entropy because the entropy does not satisfy the area-law. On the other hand, for $c>0$, we find the BIAdS-like black…
We re-derive the first law of black hole mechanics in the context of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in a gauge-invariant way introducing "momentum maps" associated to field strengths and the vectors that generate their symmetries. These objects play the role of generalized thermodynamical potentials in the first law and satisfy generalized zeroth laws, as first observed in the context of principal gauge bundles by Prabhu, but they can be generalized to more complex situations. We test our ideas on the $d$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini black hole.
We consider a space-time of a spherically symmetric black hole with one simple horizon. As a standard coordinate frame fails in its vicinity, this requires continuation across the horizon and constructing frames which are regular there. Up to now, several standard frames of such a kind are known. It was shown in literature before, how some of them can be united in one picture as different limits of a general scheme. However, some types of frames (the Kruskal-Szekeres and Lema\^ıtre ones) and transformations to them from the original one remained completely disjoint. We show that the Kruskal-Sz…
We interpret the cosmological constant as the energy of the vacuum, and under a minimum amount of assumptions, we show that it is deformed in the vicinity of a black hole. This leads us to reexamine the Kerr-de Sitter solution. We provide a new solution, simpler and geometrically richer, which shows the impact of the rotation in form of a warped curvature. We carry out a detailed and exact study on the new black hole solution, and we conclude with a conjecture regarding the possible impact of our results on alternative theories.
We consider the Hawking-Page phase transition between the BTZ black hole of $M \ge 0$ and the thermal soliton of $M=-1$. In this system, there exists a mass gap so that there does not seem to exist a continuous thermodynamic phase transition. We consistently construct the off-shell free energies of the black hole and the soliton by properly taking into account the conical space. And then, the continuous off-shell free energy to describe tunneling effect can be realized through non-equilibrium solitons.
The electromagnetic field around a Kerr black hole inside a current loop is sometimes used as the basis of a toy model for discussing the properties of particle orbits near astrophysical black holes. The motivation for the present paper is to correct the published solution to Maxwell's equations with a charged current loop. Dipole approximations and closed-form expressions in the extreme Kerr limit are also presented. Using the corrected solution, it turns out that imposing a vanishing electromotive force produces a loop with a potential which is finite everywhere outside the black hole. Ring …
We study the tunneling of massless scalars across black hole horizons in any number of spacetime dimensions greater than three. Our analysis finds that corrections due to backreaction and the inverse dimensional expansion are naturally concomitant, and furnishes a simple proof of the classic relation between entropy and area in all spacetime dimensions, finite or infinite. We conclude with a discussion of the limit in which the the number of spacetime dimensions is taken to infinity, where we find that thermodynamic quantities are related to the "thickness" of the membrane on which all the cur…
We study the state-counting problem that arises in the SU(2) black hole entropy calculation in loop quantum gravity. More precisely, we compute the leading term and the logarithmic correction of both the spherically symmetric and the distorted SU(2) black holes. Contrary to what has been done in previous works, we have to take into account "quantum corrections" in our framework in the sense that the level k of the Chern-Simons theory which describes the black hole is finite and not sent to infinity. Therefore, the new results presented here allow for the computation of the entropy in models wh…
The Schwarzschild solution has played a fundamental conceptual role in general relativity, and beyond, for instance, regarding event horizons, spacetime singularities and aspects of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. However, one still encounters the existence of misconceptions and a certain ambiguity inherent in the Schwarzschild solution in the literature. By taking into account the point of view of an observer in the interior of the event horizon, one verifies that new conceptual difficulties arise. In this work, besides providing a very brief pedagogical review, we further analyze …
We re-examine Hawking radiation for a nonrotating (2+1)-dimensional BTZ black hole and evaluate the transmission probability of tunneling through the barrier of the event horizon employing the standard method of WKB approximation. Our results are presented for both uncharged and charged cases. We also explore the associated thermodynamics in terms of Hawking temperature and provide estimates of black hole parameters like the surface gravity and entropy.
We compute the mass and the temperature of third order Lovelock black holes with negative Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $α_2<0$ in anti-de Sitter space and perform the stability analysis of topological black holes. When $k=-1$, the third order Lovelock black holes are thermodynamically stable for the whole range $r_+$. When $k=1$, we found that the black hole has an intermediate unstable phase for $D=7$. In eight dimensional spacetimes, however, a new phase of thermodynamically unstable small black holes appears if the coefficient $\tildeα$ is under a critical value. For $D\geq 9$, black holes have…
A recent calculation shows that the observed energy density in the Unruh state at the future event horizon as seen by a freely falling observer is finite if the observer is released from rest at any positive distance outside the horizon; however, it is getting larger and larger so that it is negatively divergent at the horizon in the limit that the observer starts falling from rest at the horizon, which corresponds to the infinite boost with respect to the freely falling observer at a finite distance from the horizon. In order to resolve some conflicts between the recent calculation and the co…
A large class of spherically symmetric static extremal black hole spacetimes possesses a stable null photon sphere on their horizons. For the extremal Kerr-Newman family, the photon sphere only really coincides with the horizon in the sense clarified by Doran. The condition under which photon orbit is stable on an asymptotically flat extremal Kerr-Newman black hole horizon has recently been clarified; it is found that a sufficiently large angular momentum destabilizes the photon orbit, whereas electrical charge tends to stabilize it. We investigated the effect of a negative cosmological consta…
We argue that four-dimensional black hole evaporation inevitably produces an infinite number of soft particles in addition to the thermally distributed `hard' Hawking quanta, and moreover that the soft and hard particles are highly correlated. This raises the possibility that quantum purity is restored by correlations between the hard and soft radiation, while inclusive measurements which omit the soft radiation observe the thermal Hawking spectrum. In theories whose only stable particle is the graviton, conservation laws are used to argue that such correlations are in principle sufficient for…
It has been shown in the literature that the event horizon of an extremal asymptotically flat Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is also a stable photon sphere. We further clarify this statement and give a general proof that this holds for a large class of static spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes with an extremal horizon. In contrast, in the Doran frame, an extremal asymptotically flat Kerr black hole has an unstable photon orbit on the equatorial plane of its horizon. In addition, we show that an extremal asymptotically flat Kerr-Newman black hole exhibits two equatorial photon orbits if…
In this work we generalize an earlier treatment of the measurements of velocities at the event horizon of a black hole. This is intended as a pedagogical exercise as well as one more contribution to the resolution of some unphysical interpretations related to velocity measurements by generalized observers. We now use a more general metric and, non-geodesic observer sets to show that the velocity of a test particle at the event horizon is less than the speed of light.
The first law of thermodynamics at black hole horizons is known to be obtainable from the gravitational field equations. A recent study claims that the contributions at inner horizons should be considered in order to give the conventional first law of black hole thermodynamics. Following this method, we revisit the thermodynamic aspects of field equations in the Lovelock gravity and f(R) gravity by focusing on two typical classes of charged black holes in the two theories.
We propose a new link between entropy and area: an eternal black hole with an ER bridge with cross-section $A$ can carry a macroscopic amount of quantum information, or be in a mixed state, with entropy bounded by $S \leq A/4G_N$. We substantiate our proposal in the context of AdS3 and JT gravity, by using the Island prescription and replica wormhole method for computing the black hole entropy. We argue that the typical mixed state of a two sided black hole takes the form of an entangled `thermo-mixed double' state with only classical correlations between the two sides. Our result for the von …
The Breton-Manko solution for two identical counter-rotating Kerr-Newman charged masses is rewritten in the physical parametrization involving Komar quantities. The new form of the solution turns out to be very convenient for verifying that the black-hole sector of the Bretón-Manko binary configuration saturates a recent geometric inequality for interacting black holes with struts discovered by Gabach Clement.
The thermodynamic properties of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole endowed with Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-type boundary conditions are considered. This familiy of boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS$_{3}$ is labeled by a non-negative integer $n$, and gives rise to a dual theory which possesses anisotropic Lifshitz scaling invariance with dynamical exponent $z=2n+1$. We show that from the scale invariance of the action for stationary and circularly symmetric spacetimes, an anisotropic version of the Smarr relation arises, and we prove that it is totally consistent with …
Gravitational waves from the coalescence of binary black holes carry away linear momentum, causing center of mass recoil. This "radiation rocket" effect has important implications for systems with escape speeds of order the recoil velocity. We revisit this problem using black hole perturbation theory, treating the binary as a test mass spiraling into a spinning hole. For extreme mass ratios (q = m1/m2 << 1) we compute the recoil for the slow inspiral epoch of binary coalescence very accurately; these results can be extrapolated to q ~ 0.4 with modest accuracy. Although the recoil from the fina…
In three-dimensional AdS space, we consider the gravitational collapse of dust shell and then investigate the quantum radiation from the collapsing shell by employing the functional Schrödinger formalism. In the formation of the BTZ black hole, the interior geometry of the shell can be chosen as either the massless black hole or the global AdS space. In the incipient black hole limit, we obtain the wave function exactly from the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a massless scalar field. Then, we show that the occupation number of excited states can be written by analytic expressions, and…
During the last few years progress has been made on several fronts making it possible to revisit Cauchy-perturbative matching (CPM) in numerical relativity in a more robust and accurate way. This paper is the first in a series where we plan to analyze CPM in the light of these new results. Here we start by testing high-order summation-by-parts operators, penalty boundaries and contraint-preserving boundary conditions applied to CPM in a setting that is simple enough to study all the ingredients in great detail: Einstein's equations in spherical symmetry, describing a black hole coupled to a ma…
The Unruh temperature calculated from the global embedding of the Schwarzschild AdS spacetime into Minkowski spacetime was identified with the local temperature measured by a free-fall observer; however, it would be imaginary in a certain region outside the event horizon. So, the temperature was assumed to be zero of no thermal radiation for that region. In this paper, we revisit this issue in the exactly soluble two-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole and present an alternative resolution to this problem by using the Tolman's procedure. However, the process is not straightforward in the …
We use fully nonlinear numerical relativity techniques to study high energy head-on collision of nonspinning, equal-mass black holes to estimate the maximum gravitational radiation emitted by these systems. Our simulations include improvements in the construction of initial data, subsequent full numerical evolutions, and the computation of waveforms at infinity. The new initial data significantly reduces the spurious radiation content, allowing for initial speeds much closer to the speed of light, i.e. $v\sim0.99c$. Using these new techniques, We estimate the maximum radiated energy from head-…
Following an earlier suggestion of the authors(gr-qc/9607030), we use some basic properties of Euclidean black hole thermodynamics and the quantum mechanics of systems with periodic phase space coordinate to derive the discrete two-parameter area spectrum of generic charged spherically symmetric black holes in any dimension. For the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole we get $A/4G\hbar=π(2n+p+1)$, where the integer p=0,1,2,.. gives the charge spectrum, with $Q=\pm\sqrt{\hbar p}$. The quantity $π(2n+1)$, n=0,1,... gives a measure of the excess of the mass/energy over the critical minimum (i.e. extrem…
We analyzed the thermodynamics of hypothetical exoplanets at very low Keplerian circular orbits in close vicinity of rapidly spinning supermassive black holes. Such black hole exoplanets are heated by strongly blueshifted and focused flux of the incoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) and cooled by the cold part of the local sky containing the black hole shadow. This gives rise to a temperature difference, which can drive processes far from thermodynamic equilibrium in a hypothetical life form inhabiting black hole exoplanets, similar to the case of a planet heated by the radiation of the p…
We revisit Bondi flows on black holes, naked singularities and neutron stars keeping in mind recent progress in understanding of the flow behaviour near compact objects. In an adiabatic spherical accretion on black holes and naked singularities, standing shock waves do not form, but shocks on neutron stars may or may not form depending on the boundary conditions. For low accretion rates (hard state), these objects may behave similarly. However, for high accretion rates (soft state), the converging flow on a black hole will produce a weak hard tail of energy spectral slope of $\sim 1.5$ (apart …
We present the results of 14 simulations of nonspinning black hole binaries with mass ratios $q=m_1/m_2$ in the range $1/100\leq q\leq1$. For each of these simulations we perform three runs at increasing resolution to assess the finite difference errors and to extrapolate the results to infinite resolution. For $q\geq 1/6$, we follow the evolution of the binary typically for the last ten orbits prior to merger. By fitting the results of these simulations, we accurately model the peak luminosity, peak waveform frequency and amplitude, and the recoil of the remnant hole for unequal mass nonspinn…
Gravitational-wave memory refers to the permanent displacement of the test masses in an idealized (freely-falling) gravitational-wave interferometer. Inspiraling binaries produce a particularly interesting form of memory--the Christodoulou memory. Although it originates from nonlinear interactions at 2.5 post-Newtonian order, the Christodoulou memory affects the gravitational-wave amplitude at leading (Newtonian) order. Previous calculations have computed this non-oscillatory amplitude correction during the inspiral phase of binary coalescence. Using an "effective-one-body" description calibra…
The question of the physical reality of the black hole interior is a recurrent one. An objection to its existence is the well known fact that the velocity of a material particle, refered to the stationary frame, tends to the velocity of light as it approaches the horizon. It is shown, using Kruskal coordinates, that a timelike radial geodesic does not become null at the event horizon.
The quasinormal modes of the electromagnetic and gravitational perturbation on Schwarzschild-AdS black hole calculated by Cardoso and Lemos has been revisited. Although the equations of motion are correct some frequencies calculated previously by the authors are not. We present the new values of quasinormal modes and discuss the possible sources of problems and implications on the conclusions presented.
We use Heun type solutions given in \cite{Suzuki} for the radial Teukolsky equation, written in the background metric of the Kerr-Newman-de Sitter geometry, to calculate the quasinormal frequencies for polynomial solutions and the reflection coefficient for waves coming from the de Sitter horizon and reflected at the outer horizon of the black hole.
I revisit rotating black hole solutions in three-dimensional Horava gravity with z = 2 as a simpler set-up of the renormalizable quantum gravity `a la Lifshitz and DeWitt. The solutions have a curvature singularity at the origin for a non-vanishing rotation parameter J, unlike the black holes in three-dimensional Einstein gravity. For anti-de Sitter space, there are black hole event horizons as usual and the singularity is not naked, in agreement with the cosmic censorship. On the other hand, for flat or de Sitter space, the earlier solution has also a cosmic-censorship problem because there a…
The Blandford-Znajek theory (1977) is generally studied to understand the generation of powerful relativistic jets. However, it could also give important insights about the feedback between a rotating black hole, its ergosphere, and a surrounding accretion disk. The energy flow between these systems could be understood by studying the BZ power as a function of a slip factor, which in turn is defined as a function of the angular velocity of the black hole and the angular velocity of the magnetic field lines (generally anchored to the disk). The distinct stages could explain the different types …
The large dimension ($D$) limit of general relativity has been used in problems involving black holes as an analytical approximation tool. Further it has been proposed that both linear and nonlinear problems involving black holes can be systematically studied in a $1/D$ expansion. Certain quasinormal modes of higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes with $ω\sim \mathcal{O}(1)$ were studied in the large $D$ limit using a $1/D$ expansion for the mode function. In this paper, we revisit this linear perturbation problem and obtain an analytical equation for the vector quasinormal modes $ω\sim …
A thought experiment considered recently in the literature, in which it is investigated whether a dyonic Kerr-Newman black hole can be destroyed by overcharging or overspinning it past extremality by a massive complex scalar test field, is revisited. Another derivation of the result that this is not possible, i.e. the weak cosmic censorship is not violated in this thought experiment, is given. The derivation is based on conservation laws, on a null energy condition, and on specific properties of the metric and the electromagnetic field of dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes. The metric is kept fixe…
In this paper the $f(R)$ global monopole is reexamined. We provide an exact solution for the modified field equations in the presence of a global monopole for regions outside its core, generalizing previous results. Additionally, we discuss some particular cases obtained from this solution. We consider a setup consisting of a possible Schwarzschild black hole that absorbs the topological defect, giving rise to a static black hole endowed with a monopole's charge. Besides, we demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs field far from the monopole's core is shaped by a class of spacetim…
We investigate on a Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime, a Kerr-like black hole in the conformal dilaton-Higgs $(ω,Φ)$ gravity model. We applied the antipodal boundary condition on the Klein surface using the $\mathds{Z}_2$-symmetry in the "large" (bulk) extra dimension. It turns out that the pseudo-Riemannian 5D manifold can be written as an effective 4D Riemannian brane spacetime, $\mathds{R}^2_+\times\mathds{R}^1\times S^1$, where $\mathds{R}^2_+$ is conformally flat. The solution in valid on both manifolds. So the solution can equally well described by an instanton solution. An advantage is t…
