Only three magnetic $δ$ Scuti stars are known as of today. HD 41641 is a $δ$ Scuti star showing chemical peculiarities and rotational modulation of its light-curve, making it a good magnetic candidate. We acquired spectropolarimetric observations of this star with Narval at TBL to search for the presence of a magnetic field and characterize it. We indeed clearly detect a magnetic field in HD 41641, making it the fourth known magnetic $δ$ Scuti star. Our analysis shows that the field is of fossil origin, like magnetic OBA stars, but with a complex field structure rather than the much more usual dipolar structure.

F type stars are characterised by several physical processes such as different pulsation mechanisms, rotation, convection, diffusion, and magnetic fields. The rapidly rotating delta Scuti star beta Cas can be considered as a benchmark star to study the interaction of several of these effects. We investigate the pulsational and magnetic field properties of beta Cas. We also determine the star's apparent fundamental parameters and chemical abundances. Based on photometric time series obtained from three different space missions (BRITE-Constellation, SMEI, and TESS), we conduct a frequency analys…
Theory of fossil magnetic field is based on the observations, analytical estimations and numerical simulations of magnetic flux evolution during star formation in the magnetized cores of molecular clouds. Basic goals, main features of the theory and manifestations of MHD effects in young stellar objects are discussed.
Although pulsations of $δ$ Scuti type are not expected among Ap stars from a theoretical point of view, previous observations of the known $δ$ Scuti star HD21190 indicated a spectral classification F2 III SrEuSi:, making it the most evolved Ap star known. Our atmospheric chemical analysis based on recent HARPS observations confirms the presence of chemical peculiarities in HD21190. This star is also the only target known to host a magnetic field along with its $δ$ Scuti pulsation properties. Using an astrometric analysis, we show that HD21190 forms a physical binary system with the companion C…
HD 21190 is a known $δ$ Scuti star showing Ap star characteristics and a variability period of 3.6 h discovered by the Hipparcos mission. Using Gaia DR1 data for an astrometric analysis, it was recently suggested that HD 21190 forms a physical binary system with the companion CPD -83$^{\circ}$ 64B. An atmospheric chemical analysis based on HARPS observations revealed the presence of overabundances of heavy and rare-earth elements, which are typically observed in chemically peculiar stars with large-scale organized magnetic fields. Previous observations of HD 21190 indicated a magnetic field st…
A small fraction of the population of intermediate-mass and massive stars host strong and stable magnetic fields organised on large scales. These fields are believed to be remnants of star formation. It is however not clear how such fossil fields have been shaped during their formation and subsequent evolution. We report recent and ongoing studies on the magnetic properties of pre-main sequence stars and main sequence binaries, allowing us to make progress in this field.
The MiMeS project demonstrated that a small fraction of massive stars (around 7%) presents large-scale, stable, generally dipolar magnetic fields at their surface. They are supposed to be fossil remnants of initial phases of stellar evolution. In fact, they result from the relaxation to MHD equilibrium states during the formation of stable radiation zones of initial fields generated by a previous convective phase. In contrast with the case of magnetic fields built by dynamo mechanisms, the geometry of fossil fields at the surface of early-type stars seems to be independent of rotation: dipolar…
The Kepler space mission provided a wealth of δ Sct-γ Dor hybrid candidates. While some may be genuine hybrids, others might be misclassified due to the presence of a binary companion or to rotational modulation caused by magnetism and related surface inhomogeneities. In particular, the Kepler δ Sct-γ Dor hybrid candidate HD 188774 shows a few low frequencies in its light and radial velocity curves, whose origin is unclear. In this work, we check for the presence of a magnetic field in HD 188774. We obtained two spectropolarimetric measurements with ESPaDOnS at CFHT. The data were analysed wit…
High-resolution circular spectropolarimetric observations, obtained with ESPaDOnS in the context of the BinaMIcS Large Program, have revealed a magnetic field in the B3V secondary component of the SB2 binary system $ε$ Lupi (B2/B3). As the B2V primary is already known to be magnetic, this is the first detection of a magnetic field in both components of an early-type binary system. The longitudinal magnetic field of the primary is $\sim -200$ G; that of the secondary $\sim +100$ G. Observations can be approximately reproduced by a model assuming the magnetic axes of the two stars are anti-align…
While several observational investigations have revealed the presence of magnetic fields in the circumstellar envelopes, jets and outflows of post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (PAGBs) and planetary nebulae (PNe), none has clearly demonstrated their presence at the stellar surface. The lack of information on the strength of the surface magnetic fields prevents us from performing any thorough assessment of their dynamic capability (i.e. material mixing, envelope shaping, etc). We present new high resolution spectropolarimetric (Stokes V ) observations of a sample of PAGB stars, realised with th…
In the context of the ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimetric surveys of Herbig Ae/Be stars, we discovered and then monitored the magnetic field of HD 190073 over more than four years, from 2004 to 2009. Our observations all displayed similar Zeeman signatures in the Stokes V spectra, indicating that HD 190073 hosted an aligned dipole, stable over many years, consistent with a fossil origin. We obtained new observations of the star in 2011 and 2012 and detected clear variations of the Zeeman signature on timescales of days to weeks, indicating that the configuration of its field has changed be…
Context. Stellar internal magnetic fields have recently been shown to leave a detectable signature on period spacing patterns of gravity modes. Aims. We investigate the effect of the obliquity of a mixed (poloidal and toroidal) dipolar internal fossil magnetic field with respect to the rotation axis on the frequency of gravity modes in rapidly rotating stars. Methods. We use the traditional approximation of rotation to compute non-magnetic modes, and a perturbative treatment of the magnetic field to compute the corresponding frequency shifts. We apply the new formalism to HD 43317, a magnetic,…
Weak magnetic fields have recently been detected in Vega and Sirius. Here, we explore the possibility that these fields are the remnants of some field inherited or created during or shortly after star formation and, unlike true fossil fields, are still evolving as we observe them. The timescale of this evolution is given in terms of the Alfven timescale and the rotation frequency by tau_evol ~ tau_A^2 Omega, which would be comparable to the age of the star. It is shown that it is likely that all intermediate- and high-mass stars contain fields of at least the order of the strength found so far…
Surface magnetic fields have a strong impact on stellar mass loss and rotation and, as a consequence, on the evolution of massive stars. In this work we study the influence of an evolving dipolar surface fossil magnetic field with an initial field strength of 4 kG on the characteristics of 15 M$_{\odot}$ solar metallicity models using the Geneva stellar evolution code. Non-rotating and rotating models considering two different scenarios for internal angular momentum transport are computed, including magnetic field evolution, mass-loss quenching, and magnetic braking. Magnetic field evolution r…
$ρ$ Pup is a $δ$ Scuti F2 pulsator, known to host a main radial mode as well as non-radial pulsations, with chemical peculiarities typical of evolved Am stars. We present high-precision spectropolarimetric observations of this star, obtained with ESPaDOnS at the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in the frame of the BRITE spectropolarimetric survey. A magnetic field is clearly detected in $ρ$ Pup, with a longitudinal field strength below 1 G. This makes $ρ$ Pup the second known magnetic $δ$ Scuti discovered, after HD 188774, and a possible cool evolved counterpart of the recently discovered…
We study the impact of a fossil magnetic field on the physical quantities which describe the structure of a young Sun of 500 Myr. We consider for the first time a non force-free field composed of a mixture of poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields and we propose a specific configuration to illustrate our purpose. In the present paper, we estimate the relative role of the different terms which appear in the modified stellar structure equations. We note that the Lorentz tension plays a non negligible role in addition to the magnetic pressure. This is interesting because most of the previous stell…
Early-type stars show a bimodal distribution of magnetic field strengths, with some showing very strong fields ($\gtrsim 1\,\mathrm{kG}$) and others very weak fields ($\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{G}$). Recently, we proposed that this reflects the processing or lackthereof of fossil fields by subsurface convection zones. Stars with weak fossil fields process these at the surface into even weaker dynamo-generated fields, while in stars with stronger fossil fields magnetism inhibits convection, allowing the fossil field to remain as-is. We now expand on this theory and explore the time-scales involved i…
About 10% of hot stars host a fossil magnetic field on the pre-main sequence and main sequence. However, the first magnetic evolved hot stars have been discovered only recently. An observing program has been set up to find more such objects. This will allow us to test how fossil fields evolve, and the impact of magnetism on stellar evolution. Already 7 evolved magnetic hot stars are now known and the rate of magnetic discoveries in the survey suggests that they host dynamo fields in addition to fossil fields. Finally, the weakness of the measured fields is compatible at first order with simple…
Are the kG-strength magnetic fields observed in young stars a fossil field left over from their formation or are they generated by a dynamo? We use radiation non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics simulations of the gravitational collapse of a rotating, magnetized molecular cloud core over 17 orders of magnitude in density, past the first hydrostatic core to the formation of the second, stellar core, to examine the fossil field hypothesis. Whereas in previous work we found that magnetic fields in excess of 10 kG can be implanted in stars at birth, this assumed ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), i.e. th…

Various observational properties of Ap/Bp stars have been well-established such as the often-cited 10% incidence rate of strong, organized magnetic fields amongst all A- and B-type stars. However, these inferences have generally been drawn fromsurveys biased towards the strongest most easily detectable fields. A volume-limited spectropolarimetric survey of all intermediate-mass stars within 100 pc was initiated in 2007 in order to avoid the biases inherent in previous studies. This workyielded the magnetic properties of a large number of Ap/Bp stars in the sample; however, nearly half of the s…
Context. Stellar magnetic fields are one of the candidates often invoked to explain the missing transport of angular momentum observed in the models of stellar interiors. However, the properties of an internal magnetic field and the consequences of its presence on stellar evolution are largely unknown. Aims. We study the effect of an axisymmetric internal magnetic field on the frequency of gravity modes in rapidly rotating stars to check whether gravity modes can be used to detect and probe such a field. Methods. Rotation is taken into account using the traditional approximation of rotation an…
Stars more massive than $\sim 1.3$ M$_\odot$ are known to develop a convective core during the main-sequence: the dynamo process triggered by this convection could be the origin of a strong magnetic field inside the core of the star, trapped when it becomes stably stratified and for the rest of its evolution. The presence of highly magnetized white dwarfs strengthens the hypothesis of buried fossil magnetic fields inside the core of evolved low-mass stars. If such a fossil field exists, it should affect the mixed modes of red giants as they are sensitive to processes affecting the deepest laye…
We elaborate the model of accretion disks of young stars with the fossil large-scale magnetic field in the frame of Shakura and Sunyaev approximation. Equations of the MHD model include Shakura and Sunyaev equations, induction equation and equations of ionization balance. Magnetic field is determined taking into account ohmic diffusion, magnetic ambipolar diffusion and buoyancy. Ionization fraction is calculated considering ionization by cosmic rays and X-rays, thermal ionization, radiative recombinations and recombinations on the dust grains. Analytical solution and numerical investigations s…
The time evolution of angular momentum and surface rotation of massive stars is strongly influenced by fossil magnetic fields via magnetic braking. We present a new module containing a simple, comprehensive implementation of such a field at the surface of a massive star within the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) software instrument. We test two limiting scenarios for magnetic braking: distributing the angular momentum loss throughout the star in the first case, and restricting the angular momentum loss to a surface reservoir in the second case. We perform a systematic in…
Low frequency oscillation, typical for Gamma Doradus g-mode type stellar core sensitive pulsation, as well as higher frequency Delta Scuti type pulsation typical for p-modes, sensitive to the envelope, make HD 8801 a remarkable hybrid pulsator with the potential to probe a stellar structure over a wide range of radius. In addition HD 8801 is a rare pulsating metallic line (Am) star. We determined the astrophysical fundamental parameters to locate HD 8801 in the HR diagram. We analyzed the element abundances, paying close attention to the errors involved, and confirm the nature of HD 8801 as a …
Observations of stable mainly dipolar magnetic fields at the surface of ~7% of single hot stars indicate that these fields are of fossil origin, i.e. they descend from the seed field in the molecular clouds from which the stars were formed. Recent results confort this theory. First, theoretical work and numerical simulations confirm that the properties of the observed fields correspond to those expected from fossil fields. They also showed that rapid rotation does not modify the surfacic dipolar magnetic configurations, but hinders the stability of fossil fields. This explains the lack of corr…
The discovery of the moderate differential rotation between the core and the envelope of evolved solar-like stars could be the signature of a strong magnetic field trapped inside the radiative interior. The population of intermediate-mass red giants presenting a surprisingly low-amplitude of their mixed modes could also arise from the effect of an internal magnetic field. Indeed, stars more massive than about 1.1Ms are known to develop a convective core during their main sequence, which could relax into a strong fossil magnetic field trapped inside the core of the star for the rest of its evol…
Fractal behaviour, i.e. scale invariance in spatio-temporal dynamics, have been found to describe and model many systems in nature, in particular fluid mechanics and geophysical related geometrical objects, like the convective boundary layer of cumulus cloud fields, topographic landscapes, solar granulation patterns, and observational astrophysical time series, like light curves of pulsating stars. The main interest in the study of fractal properties in such physical phenomena lies in the close relationships they have with chaotic and turbulent dynamic. In this work we introduce some statistic…
The combination of photometry, spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of the chemically peculiar stars often aims to study the complex physical phenomena such as stellar pulsation, chemical inhomogeneity, magnetic field and their interplay with stellar atmosphere and circumstellar environment. The prime objective of the present study is to determine the atmospheric parameters of a set of Am stars to understand their evolutionary status. Atmospheric abundances and basic parameters are determined using full spectrum fitting technique by comparing the high-resolution spectra to the synthetic spectra…
In early-type stars a fossil magnetic field may be generated during the star formation process or be the result of a stellar merger event. Surface magnetic fields are thought to be erased by (sub)surface convection layers, which typically leave behind weak disordered fields. However, if the fossil field is strong enough it can prevent the onset of (sub)surface convection and so be preserved onto the main sequence. We calculate the critical field strength at which this occurs, and find that it corresponds well with the lower limit amplitude of observed fields in strongly magnetised Ap/Bp stars …
$τ$ Sco, a well-studied magnetic B-type star in the Upper Sco association, has a number of surprising characteristics. It rotates very slowly and shows nitrogen excess. Its surface magnetic field is much more complex than a purely dipolar configuration which is unusual for a magnetic massive star. We employ the CMFGEN radiative transfer code to determine the fundamental parameters and surface CNO and helium abundances. Then, we employ MESA and GENEC stellar evolution models accounting for the effects of surface magnetic fields. To reconcile $τ$ Sco's properties with single-star models, an incr…
Context. The understanding of fossil fields origin, topology and stability is one of the corner stones of the stellar magnetism theory. On one hand, since they survive over secular time-scales, they may modify the structure and the evolution of their host stars. On the other hand, they must have a complex stable structure since it has been demonstrated by Tayler and collaborators that simplest purely poloidal or toroidal fields are unstable on dynamical time-scales. In this context, the only stable configuration which has been found today is the one resulting of a numerical simulation by Brait…
Magnetic fields can drastically change predictions of evolutionary models of massive stars via mass-loss quenching, magnetic braking, and efficient angular momentum transport, which we aim to quantify in this work. We use the MESA software instrument to compute an extensive main-sequence grid of stellar structure and evolution models, as well as isochrones, accounting for the effects attributed to a surface fossil magnetic field. The grid is densely populated in initial mass (3-60 M$_\odot$), surface equatorial magnetic field strength (0-50 kG), and metallicity (representative of the Solar nei…
Over the last decade, tremendous strides have been achieved in our understanding of magnetism in main sequence hot stars. In particular, the statistical occurrence of their surface magnetism has been established (~10%) and the field origin is now understood to be fossil. However, fundamental questions remain: how do these fossil fields evolve during the post-main sequence phases, and how do they influence the evolution of hot stars from the main sequence to their ultimate demise? Filling the void of known magnetic evolved hot (OBA) stars, studying the evolution of their fossil magnetic fields …
Surface magnetic fields have been detected in 5 to 10% of isolated massive stars, hosting outer radiative envelopes. They are often thought to have a fossil origin, resulting from the stellar formation phase. Yet, magnetic massive stars are scarcer in (close) short-period binaries, as reported by the BinaMIcS (Binarity and Magnetic Interaction in various classes of Stars) collaboration. Different physical conditions in the molecular clouds giving birth to isolated stars and binaries are commonly invoked. In addition, we propose that the observed lower magnetic incidence in close binaries may b…
This review summarises results of recent magnetic and chemical abundance surface mapping studies of early-type stars. We discuss main trends uncovered by observational investigations and consider reliability of spectropolarimetric inversion techniques used to infer these results. A critical assessment of theoretical attempts to interpret empirical magnetic and chemical maps in the framework of, respectively, the fossil field and atomic diffusion theories is also presented. This confrontation of theory and observations demonstrates that 3D MHD models of fossil field relaxation are successful in…
Buoyancy of the fossil magnetic field in the accretion disks of young stars is investigated. It is assumed that the Parker instability leads to the formation of slender flux tubes of toroidal magnetic field in the regions of effective magnetic field generation. Stationary solution of the induction equation is written in the form in which buoyancy is treated as the additional mechanism of the magnetic flux escape. We calculate the fossil magnetic field intensity in the accretion disks of young T Tauri stars for the cases when radius of the magnetic flux tubes $a_{\mathrm{mft}} = 0.1H$, $0.5 H$ …
Context: Angular momentum (AM) transport models of stellar interiors require improvements to explain the strong extraction of AM from stellar cores that is observed with asteroseismology. One of the often invoked mediators of AM transport are internal magnetic fields, even though their properties, observational signatures and influence on stellar evolution are largely unknown. Aims: We study how a fossil, axisymmetric internal magnetic field affects period spacing patterns of dipolar gravity mode oscillations in main-sequence stars with masses of 1.3, 2.0 and 3.0 M$_\odot$. We assess the influ…
Observational and theoretical work has now established that the fossil fields of magnetic massive stars are surviving remnants from an earlier event, or an earlier evolutionary phase. However, many important questions remain regarding the effects of these fields on the late stages of stellar evolution, as well as their impact on the core-collapse mechanism and the formation of exotic compact objects such as magnetars and gravitational wave progenitors. There is currently a critical need to incorporate the impact of fossil fields in models of the structure and evolution of magnetic stars, and t…
It is now well established that a fraction of the massive (M>8 Msun) star population hosts strong, organised magnetic fields, most likely of fossil origin. The details of the generation and evolution of these fields are still poorly understood. The BinaMIcS project takes an important step towards the understanding of the interplay between binarity and magnetism during the stellar formation and evolution, and in particular the genesis of fossil fields, by studying the magnetic properties of close binary systems. The components of such systems are most likely formed together, at the same time an…
In this contribution I review some of the major work that have been undertaken in the last decade to study the magnetic fields in intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars, with the goal of understanding the origin of the magnetic fields detected in the chemically peculiar Ap/Bp stars, and testing the fossil field theory.
We investigate the light variations of 15 Am stars using four years of high-precision photometry from the Kepler spacecraft and an additional 14 Am stars from the K2 Campaign 0 field. We find that most of the Am stars in the Kepler field have light curves characteristic of rotational modulation due to star spots. Of the 29 Am stars observed, 12 are δ Scuti variables and one is a γ Doradus star. One star is an eclipsing binary and another was found to be a binary from time-delay measurements. Two Am stars show evidence for flares which are unlikely to be due to a cool companion. The fact that 1…
The reason for the observed thinness of the solar tachocline is still not well understood. One of the explanations that have been proposed is that a primordial magnetic field renders the rotation uniform in the radiation zone. We test here the validity of this magnetic scenario through 3D numerical MHD simulations that encompass both the radiation zone and the convection zone. The numerical simulations are performed with the anelastic spherical harmonics (ASH) code. The computational domain extends from $0.07\;R_\odot$ to $0.97\;R_\odot$. In the parameter regime we explored, a dipolar fossil f…
I review our current knowledge of magnetic fields in stars more massive than around 1.5 Msun, in particular their nature and origin. This includes the strong magnetic fields found in a subset of the population and the fossil field theory invoked to explain them; the subgauss fields detected in Vega and Sirius and their possible origin; and what we can infer about magnetic activity in massive stars and how it might be linked to subsurface convection.
We investigate the fossil magnetic field in the accretion and protoplanetary discs using the Shakura and Sunyaev approach. The distinguishing feature of this study is the accurate solution of the ionization balance equations and the induction equation with Ohmic diffusion, magnetic ambipolar diffusion, buoyancy and the Hall effect. We consider the ionization by cosmic rays, X-rays and radionuclides, radiative recombinations, recombinations onto dust grains, and also thermal ionization. The buoyancy appears as the additional mechanism of magnetic flux escape in the steady-state solution of the …
Enormous progress has been made on observing stellar magnetism in stars from the main sequence through to compact objects. Recent data have thrown into sharper relief the vexed question of the origin of stellar magnetic fields, which remains one of the main unanswered questions in astrophysics. In this chapter we review recent work in this area of research. In particular, we look at the fossil field hypothesis which links magnetism in compact stars to magnetism in main sequence and pre-main sequence stars and we consider why its feasibility has now been questioned particularly in the context o…
In this review, I will summarise what we know about magnetic fields in stars and what the origin of these magnetic fields may be. I will address the issue of whether the magnetic flux is conserved from pre-main sequence to the compact star phase (fossil field origin) or whether fields may be dynamo generated during some stages of stellar evolution or perhaps during stellar merging events.
Only 5 Of?p stars have been identified in the Galaxy. Of these, 3 have been studied in detail, and within the past 5 years magnetic fields have been detected in each of them. The observed magnetic and spectral characteristics are indicative of organised magnetic fields, likely of fossil origin, confining their supersonic stellar winds into dense, structured magnetospheres. The systematic detection of magnetic fields in these stars strongly suggests that the Of?p stars represent a general class of magnetic O-type stars.
Extraction of characteristics of the complex light curve of pulsating stars is essential for stellar physics. We investigate the complex network (natural and horizontal visibility graphs) properties of the \dsct\ stars light curves observed by \tess. We find that the average shortest path length of \dsct\ light curves is a linear function of the logarithm of the network sizes, indicating the small-world and non-random properties. The small-world property signifies the connection of significant peaks of the light curve with small nearing peaks and other important peaks. The lognormal behavior o…
We have analysed the photometric data obtained with the STEREO spacecraft for 558 non-magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars to search for rotational and pulsational variability. Applying the Lomb-Scargle and the phase dispersion minimisation methods, we have detected photometric variability for 44 objects from which 35 were previously unknown. The new objects are all bright stars on the Ecliptic Plane (magnitude range 4.7 < V < 11.7) and will therefore be of great interest to studies of stellar structure and evolution. In particular, several show multiple signals consistent with hybrid delta…
Isolated magnetic white dwarfs have field strengths ranging from kilogauss to gigagauss, and constitute an interesting class of objects. The origin of the magnetic field is still the subject of a hot debate. Whether these fields are fossil, hence the remnants of original weak magnetic fields amplified during the course of the evolution of the progenitor of white dwarfs, or on the contrary, are the result of binary interactions or, finally, other physical mechanisms that could produce such large magnetic fields during the evolution of the white dwarf itself, remains to be elucidated. In this wo…
