Enormous progress has been made on observing stellar magnetism in stars from the main sequence through to compact objects. Recent data have thrown into sharper relief the vexed question of the origin of stellar magnetic fields, which remains one of the main unanswered questions in astrophysics. In this chapter we review recent work in this area of research. In particular, we look at the fossil field hypothesis which links magnetism in compact stars to magnetism in main sequence and pre-main sequence stars and we consider why its feasibility has now been questioned particularly in the context of highly magnetic white dwarfs. We also review the fossil versus dynamo debate in the context of neutron stars and the roles played by key physical processes such as buoyancy, helicity, and superfluid turbulence,in the generation and stability of neutron star fields.
Independent information on the internal magnetic field of neutron stars will come from future gravitational wave detections. Thus we maybe at the dawn of a new era of exciting discoveries in compact star magnetism driven by the opening of a new, non-electromagnetic observational window.
We also review recent advances in the theory and computation of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence as it applies to stellar magnetism and dynamo theory. These advances offer insight into the action of stellar dynamos as well as processes whichcontrol the diffusive magnetic flux transport in stars.
A new magnetic field-generation mechanism based on the Nernst effect is considered in hot massive stars. This mechanism can operate in the upper atmospheres of O and B stars where departures from the LTE form a region with the inverse temperature gradient.
While the presence of magnetic fields on low-mass stars is attributed to a dynamo process essentially driven by convective motions, the existence of magnetic fields on intermediate-mass stars has very likely other reasons. Presuming that the fields we see are nearly constant in time, the paper focuses on the generation of stable magnetic configurations at the early stages of stellar evolution. The convective processing of an initial magnetic field during the pre-main-sequence phase is studied in a very simple model star. Azimuthal magnetic fields are found to be typical remnants in the upcomin…
This paper considers a possibility of magnetic-field generation by local turbulent flows at the bottom of convective zone. The cycle of magnetic-field generation in this model can be represented in the form of sequency of processes. There are vortexes with azimuth axis, similar with Taylor vortex, close to the bottom of convection zone. This leads to the generation of twisted flux tubes because of screw dynamo. The growth of magnetic field causes emersion of U- loops. During the process of emersion and extraction azimuthal field of flux tubes converts to axial field, and reaches the surface as…
We examine the acoustic and magnetic energy generation and propagation in beta Hydri (G2 IV). The underlying motivation for this work is based on the solar, stellar, and galactic relevance of beta Hydri (a star in the Southern hemisphere), which is readily understood as a prime example and proxy of the future Sun - thus allowing assessments and analyses of the secular decay of solar activity. Regarding the magnetic energy generation, we consider longitudinal flux tube waves. We also assess acoustic waves. For the acoustic wave energy flux, the difference between the results obtained for beta H…
The generation of outflows from the Sun known as solar winds is coupled with the heating of the solar corona, and both processes are operated in magnetic structures formed on the Sun. To study the magnetic configuration responsible for these processes, we use three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to reproduce magnetic structures via flux emergence and investigate their configurations. We focus on two key quantities characterizing a magnetic configuration: the force-free parameter alpha and the flux expansion rate fex, the former of which represents how much a magnetic field is twis…
Generation and annihilation of three dimensional magnetic nulls in extrapolated solar coronal magnetic field: Data-based Implicit Large Eddy Simulation
New magnetic Ap stars with split Zeeman components are presented. These stars were discovered from observations with the FEROS spectrograph at the ESO 2.2-m telescope. Fifteen new magnetic stars are analysed here. Several stars with very strong magnetic fields were found, including HD\,70702 with a 15-kG, and HD\,168767 with a 16.5-kG magnetic field strength measured using split Zeeman components of spectral lines and by comparison with synthetic calculations. The physical parameters of the stars were estimated from photometric and spectroscopic data. Together with previously published results…
Sunquakes are the surface signatures of acoustic waves in the Sun's interior that are produced by some but not all flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This paper explores a mechanism for sunquake generation by the magnetic field changes that occur during flares and CMEs, using MHD simulations with a semiempirical FAL-C atmosphere to demonstrate the generation of acoustic waves in the interior in response to changing magnetic tilt in the corona. We find that Alfven-sound resonance combined with the ponderomotive force produces acoustic waves in the interior with sufficient energy to match…
I review ongoing efforts to understand the incidence of magnetism in intermediate-mass stars that are different from the magnetic Ap stars. This includes the search for magnetic fields in chemically peculiar stars of the Am and HgMn types as well as in normal A and late-B stars. I discuss different techniques for detection of weak stellar magnetic fields and present a critical evaluation of the recent magnetic detections in non-Ap stars. Special attention is given to the magnetic status of HgMn stars and to the discovery of weak polarization signatures in Sirius and Vega.
Only 5 Of?p stars have been identified in the Galaxy. Of these, 3 have been studied in detail, and within the past 5 years magnetic fields have been detected in each of them. The observed magnetic and spectral characteristics are indicative of organised magnetic fields, likely of fossil origin, confining their supersonic stellar winds into dense, structured magnetospheres. The systematic detection of magnetic fields in these stars strongly suggests that the Of?p stars represent a general class of magnetic O-type stars.
We present the results of the continuation of our magnetic survey with FORS1 at the VLT of a sample of B-type stars consisting of confirmed or candidate beta Cephei stars and Slowly Pulsating B (hereafter SPB) stars, along with a small number of normal B-type stars. A weak mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss was detected in three beta Cephei stars and two stars suspected to be beta Cephei stars, in five SPB stars and eight stars suspected to be SPB stars. Additionally, a longitudinal magnetic field at a level larger than 3sigma has been diagnosed in two normal …
The presence of magnetic fields at the surfaces of many massive stars has been suspected for decades, to explain the observed properties and activity of OB stars. However, very few genuine high-mass stars had been identified as magnetic before the advent of a new generation of powerful spectropolarimeters that has resulted in a rapid burst of precise information about the magnetic properties of massive stars. During this talk, I will briefly review modern methods used to diagnose magnetic fields of higher-mass stars, and summarize our current understanding of the magnetic properties of OB star…
We present the results of the continuation of our magnetic survey with FORS1 at the VLT of a sample of B-type stars consisting of confirmed or candidate beta Cephei stars and Slowly Pulsating B stars. Roughly one third of the studied beta Cephei stars have detected magnetic fields. The fraction of magnetic Slowly Pulsating B and candidate Slowly Pulsating B stars is found to be higher, up to 50%. We find that the domains of magnetic and non-magnetic pulsating stars in the H-R diagram largely overlap, and no clear picture emerges as to the possible evolution of the magnetic field across the mai…
Several models compete to explain the abundance properties of stellar populations in globular clusters. One of the main constraints is the present-day ratio of first- and second-generation stars that are currently identified based on their sodium content. We propose an alternative interpretation of the observed sodium distribution, and suggest that stars with low sodium abundance that are counted as members of the first stellar generation could actually be second-generation stars. We compute the number ratio of second-generation stars along the Na distribution following the fast rotating massi…
In A- and late B-type stars, strong magnetic fields are always associated with Ap and Bp chemical peculiarities. However, it is not clear at what point in a star's evolution those peculiarities develop. Strong magnetic fields have been observed in pre-main sequence A and B stars (Herbig Ae and Be stars), and these objects have been proposed to be the progenitors of Ap and Bp stars. However, the photospheric chemical abundances of these magnetic Herbig stars have not been studied carefully, and furthermore the chemical abundances of 'normal' non-magnetic Herbig stars remain poorly characterized…
We present a combined model for magnetic field generation and transport in cool stars with outer convection zones. The mean toroidal magnetic field, which is generated by a cyclic thin-layer alpha-omega dynamo at the bottom of the convection zone is taken to determine the emergence probability of magnetic flux tubes in the photosphere. Following the nonlinear rise of the unstable thin flux tubes, emergence latitudes and tilt angles of bipolar magnetic regions are determined. These quantities are put into a surface flux transport model, which simulates the surface evolution of magnetic flux und…
The saturation mechanism of Magneto-Rotational Instability (MRI) is examined through analytical quasilinear theory and through nonlinear computation of a single mode in a rotating disk. We find that large-scale magnetic field is generated through the alpha effect (the correlated product of velocity and magnetic field fluctuations) and causes the MRI mode to saturate. If the large-scale plasma flow is allowed to evolve, the mode can also saturate through its flow relaxation. In astrophysical plasmas, for which the flow cannot relax because of gravitational constraints, the mode saturates throug…
We investigate generation processes of magnetic fields around first stars. Since the first stars are expected to form anisotropic ionization fronts in the surrounding clumpy media, magnetic fields are generated by effects of radiation force as well as the Biermann battery effect. We have calculated the amplitude of magnetic field generated by the effects of radiation force around the first stars in the preceding paper, in which the Biermann battery effects are not taken into account. In this paper, we calculate the generation of magnetic fields by the Biermann battery effect as well as the effe…
We propose a new mechanism for turbulent mean-field dynamo in which the magnetic fluctuations resulting from a small-scale dynamo drive the generation of large-scale magnetic fields. This is in stark contrast to the common idea that small-scale magnetic fields should be harmful to large-scale dynamo action. These dynamos occur in the presence of large-scale velocity shear and do not require net helicity, resulting from off-diagonal components of the turbulent resistivity tensor as the magnetic analogue of the "shear-current" effect. Given the inevitable existence of non-helical small-scale mag…
We have shown the simultaneous generation of macro-scale fast flows and strong magnetic fields in the 2-temperature relativistic electron-ion plasmas of astrophysical objects due to Unified Reverse Dynamo/Dynamo mechanism. The resulting dynamical magnetic field amplification and/or flow acceleration is directly proportional to the initial turbulent kinetic/magnetic (magnetic) energy; the process is very sensitive to relativistically hot electron-ion fraction temperature and magneto-fluid coupling. It is shown, that for realistic physical parameters of White Dwarfs accreting hot astrophysical f…
J. Graf von der Pahlen and D. Tsiklauri, Phys. Plas. 21, 060705 (2014), established that the generation of octupolar out-of-plane magnetic field structure in a stressed $X$-point collapse is due to ion currents. The field has a central region, comprising of the well-known qaudrupolar field (quadrupolar components), as well as four additional poles of reversed polarity closer to the corners of the domain (octupolar components). In this extended work, the dependence of the octupolar structure on domain size and ion mass variation is investigated. Simulations show that the strength and spatial st…
