Given a smooth compact manifold with boundary, we study variational properties of the volume functional and of the area functional of the boundary, restricted to the space of the Riemannian metrics with prescribed curvature. We obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a metric to be a critical point. As a by-product, a very natural analogue of V-statics metrics is obtained. In the second part, using the Yamabe invariant in the boundary setting, we solve the Kazdan-Warner-Kobayashi problem in a compact manifold with boundary. For several cases, depending on the signal of the Yamabe invariant, we give sufficient and necessary condition for a smooth function to be the scalar or mean curvature of a metric with constraint on the volume or area of the boundary.
We are concerned with the study of different notions of curvature on graphs. We show that if a graph has stronger inner-outer curvature growth than a model graph, then it has faster volume growth too. We also study the relationhips of volume growth with other kind of curvatures, such as the Ollivier-Ricci curvature.
We give several Bishop-Gromov relative volume comparisons with integral Ricci curvature which improve the results in \cite{PW1}. Using one of these volume comparisons, we derive an estimate for the volume entropy in terms of integral Ricci curvature which substantially improves an earlier estimate in \cite{Au2} and give an application on the algebraic entropy of its fundamental group. We also extend the almost minimal volume rigidity of \cite{BBCG} to integral Ricci curvature.
We study the provenance of singularity formation under mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow in an axially symmetric setting. We prove that if the mean curvature is uniformly bounded on any finite time interval, then no singularities can develop during that time under both mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow.
In this paper, we study the topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature and large volume growth. We prove that they have finite topological types under some curvature decay and volume growth conditions. We also generize it to the manifolds with $k$-th asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature by using extensions of Abresch-Gromoll's excess function estimate.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold with Ricci curvature almost bounded from below and $π:\bar{M}\to M$ be a normal, Riemannian cover. We show that, for any nonnegative function $f$ on $M$, the means of $føπ$ on the geodesic balls of $\bar{M}$ are comparable to the mean of $f$ on $M$. Combined with logarithmic volume estimates, this implies bounds on several topological invariants (volume entropy, simplicial volume, first Betti number and presentations of the fundamental group) in Ricci curvature $L^p$-bounded from below.
Motivated by Brendle-Marques-Neves' counterexample to the Min-Oo's conjecture, we prove a volume constrained scalar curvature rigidity theorem which applies to the hemisphere.
We establish a min-max estimate on the volume width of a closed Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. More precisely, we show that every closed Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature admits a PL Morse function whose level set volume is bounded in terms of the volume of the manifold. As a consequence of this sweep-out estimate, there exists an embedded, closed (possibly singular) minimal hypersurface whose volume is bounded in terms of the volume of the manifold.
We prove a Lipschitz-Volume rigidity theorem for the non-collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. This is a counterpart of the Lipschitz-Volume rigidity in Alexandrov geometry.
In this short note, we will prove a volume stability theorem which says that if an n-dimensional toric manifold $M$ admits a $\mathbb{T}^n$ invariant Kähler metric $ω$ with Ricci curvature no less than 1 and its volume is close to the volume of $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $M$ is bi-holomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^n$.
We show that there are topological obstructions for a noncompact manifold to admit a Riemannian metric with quadratic curvature decay and a volume growth which is slower than that of Euclidean space of the same dimension.
We give sufficient conditions for a noncompact Riemannian manifold, which has quadratic curvature decay, to have finite topological type with ends that are cones over spherical space forms.
We give a new proof of a recent result of Munteanu--Wang relating scalar curvature to volume growth on a $3$-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. Our proof relies on the theory of $μ$-bubbles introduced by Gromov as well as the almost splitting theorem due to Cheeger--Colding.
Let N be a (n+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold with a compact Cauchy hypersurface. We consider curvature flows in N with different curvature functions F (including the mean curvature, the gauss curvature and the second elementary symmetric polynomial) and a volume preserving term. Under suitable assumptions we prove the long time existence of the flow and the exponential convergence of the corresponding graphs in the $C^\infty$-topology to a hypersurface of constant F-curvature. Furthermore we examine stability properties and foliations of constant F-curvature hypersurfac…
We obtain a local volume growth for complete, noncompact Riemannian manifolds with small integral bounds and with Bach tensor having finite $L^2$ norm in dimension 4.
Bray's football theorem (\cite{bray2009penrose}) is a weakening of Bishop theorem in dimension 3. It gives a sharp volume upper bound for a three dimensional manifold with scalar curvature larger than $n(n-1)$ and Ricci curvature larger than $\varepsilon$. This paper extends Bray's football theorem in high dimensions, assuming the manifold is axis symmetric or the Ricci curvature has an upper bound.
In this paper we obtain three results concerning the geometry of complete noncompact positively curved Kähler manifolds at infinity. The first one states that the order of volume growth of a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive bisectional curvature is at least half of the real dimension (i.e., the complex dimension). The second one states that the curvature of a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive bisectional curvature decays at least linearly in the average sense. The third result is concerned with the relation between the volume growth and the curvature decay. We …
In this note we provide several lower bounds for the volume of a geodesic ball within the injectivity radius in a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold assuming only upper bounds for the Ricci curvature.
In this paper, we prove a classification for complete embedded constant weighted mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We characterize the hyperplanes and generalized round cylinders by using an intrinsic property on the norm of the second fundamental form. Furthermore, we prove an equivalence of properness, finite weighted volume and exponential volume growth for submanifolds with weighted mean curvature of at most linear growth.
In this paper, we investigate the volume-prserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space. We prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow under certain conditions.
It is still an open problem that a complete open Kahler manifold with positive bisectional curvature is Stein. This paper partially resolve the problem by putting a restriction to volume growth condition. The partial solution here improves the observation in ([8], page 341). The improvement is based on assuming a weaker volume growth condition that is not sufficiently maximal.
We study a volume preserving curvature flow of convex hypersurfaces, driven by a power of the $k$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in the principal curvatures. Unlike most of the previous works on related problems, we do not require assumptions on the curvature pinching of the initial datum. We prove that the solution exists for all times and that the speed remains bounded and converges to a constant in an integral norm. In the case of the volume preserving scalar curvature flow, we can prove that the hypersurfaces converge smoothly and exponentially fast to a round sphere.
In this paper, we prove that a critical metric of the volume functional with pinched Weyl curvature is isometric to a geodesic ball in $\mathbb{S}^{n}.$ Moreover, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the norm of the gradient of the potential function in order to classify such critical metrics.
We obtain estimates on nonlocal quantities appearing in the Volume Preserving Mean Curvature Flow (VPMCF) in the closed, Euclidean setting. As a result we demonstrate that blowups of finite time singularities of VPMCF are ancient solutions to Mean Curvature Flow (MCF), prove that monotonicity methods may always be applied at finite times and obtain information on the asymptotics of the flow.
In this paper, we use the normalized Ricci-DeTurk flow to prove a stability result for strictly stable conformally compact Einstein manifolds. As an application, we show a local volume comparison of conformally compact manifolds with scalar curvature $R\geq -n\left(n-1\right)$ and also the rigidity result when certain renormalized volume is zero.
In this article, we study properly immersed complete noncompact submanifolds in a complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton with weighted mean curvature vector bounded in norm. We prove that such a submanifold must have polynomial volume growth under some mild assumption on the potential function. On the other hand, if the ambient manifold is of bounded geometry, we prove that such a submanifold must have at least linear volume growth. In particular, we show that a properly immersed complete noncompact hypersurface in the Euclidean space with bounded Gaussian weighted mean curvature must have …
We study the convergence of an axially symmetric hypersurface evolving by volume preserving mean curvature flow. Assuming the surface is not pinching off along the axis at any time during the flow, and without any additional conditions, as for example on the curvature, we prove that it converges to a hemisphere, when the hypersurface has a free boundary and satisfies Neumann boundary data, and to a sphere when it is compact without boundary.
We prove an optimal control on the time-dependent measure of a measurable set under a reparametrized Lagrangian mean curvature flow of almost calibrated submanifolds in a Calabi-Yau manifold. Moreover we give a classification of those Lagrangian translating solitons in $\mathbb{C}^m$ that evolve by this reparametrized flow
In this paper, we obtain two-sided bounds for the volumes of the Aloff-Wallach spaces $W(p,q),$ compute maximal and minimal sectional curvature for the spaces $W(n,n+1),$ and use this information to estimate the injectivity radii: We derive an upper bound for the injectivity radii of $W(p,q)$ and a lower bound for the injectivity radii of $W(n,n+1).$
We generalize an inequality of E. Heintze and H. Karcher [8] for the volume of tubes around minimal submanifolds to an inequality based on integral bounds for $k$-Ricci curvature. Even in the case of a pointwise bound, this generalizes the classical inequality by replacing a sectional curvature bound with a $k$-Ricci bound. This work is motivated by the estimates of Petersen-Shteingold-Wei for the volume of tubes around a geodesic [12] and generalizes their result. Using similar ideas we also prove a Hessian comparison theorem for $k$-Ricci curvature which generalizes the usual Hessian and Lap…
We study the long time existence theory for a non local flow associated to a free boundary problem for a trapped non liquid drop. The drop has free boundary components on two horizontal plates and its free energy is anisotropic and axially symmetric. For axially symmetric initial surfaces with sufficiently large volume, we show that the flow exists for all time. Numerical simulations of the curvature flow are presented.
We consider a convex Euclidean hypersurface that evolves by a volume or area preserving flow with speed given by a general nonhomogeneous function of the mean curvature. For a broad class of possible speed functions, we show that any closed convex hypersurface converges to a round sphere. The proof is based on the monotonicity of the isoperimetric ratio, which allows to control the inner and outer radius of the hypersurface and to deduce uniform bounds on the curvature by maximum principle arguments.
Lower bounds on Ricci curvature limit the volumes of sets and the existence of harmonic functions on Riemannian manifolds. In 1975, Shing Tung Yau proved that a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has no nonconstant harmonic functions of sublinear growth. In the same paper, Yau used this result to prove that a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has at least linear volume growth. In this paper, we prove the following theorem concerning harmonic functions on these manifolds. Theorem: Let M be a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ric…
We explore the relation among volume, curvature and properness of a $m$-dimensional isometric immersion in a Riemannian manifold. We show that, when the $L^p$-norm of the mean curvature vector is bounded for some $m \leq p\leq \infty$, and the ambient manifold is a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, properness is equivalent to the finiteness of the volume of extrinsic balls. We also relate the total absolute curvature of a surface isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold with its properness. Finally, we relate the curvature and the topology of a complete and non-compact $2$-Riem…
This paper concerns the evolution of a closed hypersurface of dimension $n(\geq 2)$ in the Euclidean space ${\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}$ under a mixed volume preserving flow. The speed equals a power $β(\geq 1)$ of homogeneous, either convex or concave, curvature functions of degree one plus a mixed volume preserving term, including the case of powers of the mean curvature and of the Gauss curvature. The main result is that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a suitable pinching condition, there exists a unique, smooth solution of the flow for all times, and the evolving hypersurfaces converge expone…
We prove: "If $M$ is a compact hypersurface of the hyperbolic space, convex by horospheres and evolving by the volume preserving mean curvature flow, then it flows for all time, convexity by horospheres is preserved and the flow converges, exponentially, to a geodesic sphere". In addition, we show that the same conclusions about long time existence and convergence hold if $M$ is not convex by horospheres but it is close enough to a geodesic sphere.
In this note, we obtain a sharp volume estimate for complete gradient Ricci solitons with scalar curvature bounded below by a positive constant. Using Chen-Yokota's argument we obtain a local lower bound estimate of the scalar curvature for the Ricci flow on complete manifolds. Consequently, one has a sharp estimate of the scalar curvature for expanding Ricci solitons; we also provide a direct (elliptic) proof of this sharp estimate. Moreover, if the scalar curvature attains its minimum value at some point, then the manifold is Einstein.
We provide a general Böchner type formula which enables us to prove some rigidity results for $V$-static spaces. In particular, we show that an $n$-dimensional positive static triple with connected boundary and positive scalar curvature must be isometric to the standard hemisphere, provided that the metric has zero radial Weyl curvature and satisfies a suitable pinching condition. Moreover, we classify $V$-static spaces with non-negative sectional curvature.
This paper concerns closed hypersurfaces of dimension $n(\geq 2)$ in the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb{H}}_κ^{n+1}$ of constant sectional curvature $κ$ evolving in direction of its normal vector, where the speed is given by a power $β(\geq 1/m)$ of the $m$th mean curvature plus a volume preserving term, including the case of powers of the mean curvature and of the $\mbox{Gauß}$ curvature. The main result is that if the initial hypersurface satisfies that the ratio of the biggest and smallest principal curvature is close enough to 1 everywhere, depending only on $n$, $m$, $β$ and $κ$, then under t…
This paper relates the boundary term in the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula on 4-manifolds M with the renormalized volume V, as defined in the AdS/CFT correspondence, for asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics on M. In addition, we compute and discuss the differential or variation dV of V, or equivalently the variation of the L^2 norm of the Weyl curvature, on the space of such Einstein metrics.
The stationary points of the total scalar curvature functional on the space of unit volume metrics on a given closed manifold are known to be precisely the Einstein metrics. One may consider the modified problem of finding stationary points for the volume functional on the space of metrics whose scalar curvature is equal to a given constant. In this paper, we localize a condition satisfied by such stationary points to smooth bounded domains. The condition involves a generalization of the static equations, and we interpret solutions (and their boundary values) of this equation variationally. On…
In this article, we investigate the volume comparison with respect to scalar curvature. In particular, we show volume comparison holds for small geodesic balls of metrics near a V-static metric. For closed manifold, we prove the volume comparison for metrics near a strictly stable Einstein metric. As applications, we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Bray and recover a result of Besson, Courtois and Gallot, which partially confirms a conjecture of Schoen about closed hyperbolic manifold. Applying analogous techniques, we obtain a different proof of a local rigidity result due to Dai, Wa…
We study 1-parameter families in the space $\mathscr{M}^G_1$ of $G$-invariant, unit volume metrics on a given compact, connected, almost-effective homogeneous space $M=G/H$. In particular, we focus on diverging sequences, i.e. which are not contained in any compact subset of $\mathscr{M}^G_1$, and we prove some structure results for those which have bounded curvature. We also relate our results to an algebraic version of collapse.
Examples show that Riemannian manifolds with almost-Euclidean lower bounds on scalar curvature and Perelman entropy need not be close to Euclidean space in any metric space sense. Here we show that if one additionally assumes an almost-Euclidean upper bound on volumes of geodesic balls, then unit balls in such a space are Gromov-Hausdorff close, and in fact bi-Hölder and bi-$W^{1,p}$ homeomorphic, to Euclidean balls. We prove a compactness and limit space structure theorem under the same assumptions.
We consider complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with quadratically decaying lower Ricci curvature bounds and minimal volume growth. We first prove a rigidity result showing that ends with strongly minimal volume growth are isometric to warped product manifolds. Next we consider the almost rigid case in which manifolds with nonnegative and quadratically decaying lower Ricci curvature bounds have minimal volume growth. Compact regions in such manifolds are shown to be asymptotically close to warped products in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and lin…
