An all-sky sample of 1227 visual binaries based on Washington Double Star catalogue is constructed to infer the IMF, mass ratio, and projected distance distribution with a dedicated population synthesis model. Parallaxes from Gaia DR2 and Hipparcos are used to verify the distance distribution. The model is validated on the single-star Tycho-2 sample and successfully reproduces the observed magnitudes and angular separations. The projected separation distribution follows $f(s)\sim s^{-1.2}$ in $10^2 - 2\cdot10^3$ AU range for 1--4.5 $m_{\odot}$ primary stars. Several algorithms are explored as pairing functions. Random pairing is confidently rejected. Primary-constrained (PCP) and split-core pairing (SCP), the scenarios adopting primary component's or total system's mass as fundamental, are considered. The preferred IMF slope is $α\sim 2.8$ either way. A simple power-law mass ratio distribution is unlikely, but the introduction of a twin excess provides a favourable result. PCP with $f(q) \sim q^{-1}$ is preferred with a tiny twin fraction, models with $f(q) \sim q^{-1.5}$ are acceptable when a larger twin excess is allowed. SCP is similar to PCP when a larger slope of the power law is adopted: $f(q)\sim q^{β+0.7}$.
Observations of main sequence stars conducted over the last several decades have clearly shown that something like 50 per cent of stars of spectral types G and F occur in multiple systems. For earlier spectral types, the incidence of multiplicity is even higher. Thus, a volume limited sample of white dwarfs should reflect the percentage of binarity observed in stars of F to late B spectral types, which are their Main Sequence progenitors. However, a study of the local volume limited sample of white dwarfs (20 pc from the Sun) conducted by Holberg has shown that a white dwarf has a probability …
Precise measurement of the fundamental parameters of stellar systems, including mass and radius, depends critically on how well the stellar distances are known. Astrometry from space provides parallax measurements of unprecented accuracy, from which distances can be derived, initially from the Hipparcos mission, with further refinement of that analysis provided by van Leeuwen in 2007. The publication of the Gaia DR2 catalogue promises a dramatic improvement in the available data. We have recalculated the dynamical masses of a sample of 1 700 close visual binary stars using Gaia DR2 and compare…
3350 objects from the Sixth catalog of orbits of visual binary stars (ORB6) are investigated to validate Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and provide mass estimates for the systems. We show that 2/3 of binaries with 0.2 - 0.5 arcsec separation are left without a parallax solution in EDR3. A special attention is paid to 521 pairs with parallax known separately for both components. We find 16 entries that are deemed to be chance alignments of unrelated stars. At once we show examples of high-confidence binary systems with significant differences in the reported parallaxes of their components. Next we conclu…
Statistics of orbital parameters of binary stars as well as statistics of their physical characteristics bear traces of star formation history. However, statistical investigations of binaries are complicated by lacking or incomplete observational data and by a number of observational selection effects. Visual binaries are the most numerous observed binaries, the number of pairs exceeds 130000. The most complete list of presently known visual binary stars was compiled by cross-matching objects and combining data of the three largest catalogues of visual binaries. It was supplemented by the data…
Stable shell stars are ideal objects for studying basic physical principles of the formation of disks in Be stars. If these stars have a close unresolved visual companion, its contribution toward the modelling of the disk cannot be overlooked, as is sometimes done. The study aims to spectroscopically resolve close visual binary Be (shell) star 1 Del, which up to now was only resolved by speckle or micrometric measurements. The integral field spectroscopy obtained by the SINFONI spectrograph at the VLT telescope in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in the infrared region was used; we supp…
We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847 spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the observed echelle spectra, which cover both the optical and near-IR regions. New observations of this system used the Ondřejov and Rozhen 2-m telescopes and their coudé spectrographs. Radial velocities from individual spectra were measured and then analysed with the code {\FOTEL} to determine orbital parameters. The spectroscopic orbit of HR 1847A is presented for the fir…
We present the visual orbit of the double-lined eclipsing binary, HD 185912, from long baseline interferometry with the CHARA Array. We also obtain echelle spectra from the Apache Point observatory to update the spectroscopic orbital solution and analyze new photometry from Burggraaff et al. to model the eclipses. By combining the spectroscopic and visual orbital solutions, we find component masses of M1 = 1.361 +/- 0.004 Msun and M2 = 1.331 +/- 0.004 Msun, and a distance of d = 40.75 +/- 0.30 pc from orbital parallax. From the light curve solution, we find component radii of R1 = 1.348 +/- 0.…
Recent surveys indicate that planets in binary systems are more abundant than previously thought, which is in agreement with theoretical work on disc dynamics and planet formation in binaries. In order to measure the abundance and physical characteristics of wide-orbit giant exoplanets in binary systems, we have designed the 'VIsual Binary Exoplanet survey with Sphere' (VIBES) to search for planets in visual binaries. It uses the SPHERE instrument at VLT to search for planets in 23 visual binary and four visual triple systems with ages of <145 Myr and distances of <150 pc. We used the IRDIS du…
We present the results of a multi-filter photometric monitoring of the wide binary HIP10680/HIP10679. We found both component to be variable with amplitude up to $Δ$V = 0.03 mag in the case of HIP10680 and $Δ$V = 0.07 mag in the case of HIP10679. We could measure the rotation periods P = 0.2396d of the hotter F5V component HIP10680 and P = 0.777d of the cooler G5V component HIP10679. We found that the rotation axes of both components are aligned with an inclination $i$ = $\sim$ 10$^{\circ}$. Although the two components have a mass difference not larger than 15%, they exhibit a significant diff…
Xi UrsaMajoris (ξ Uma) historically is one of the most important double star inconstellation Ursa Major, found by Sir William Herschel on May, 2, 1780 and the first binary successfully determined by using the principle of two body problem in 1828 by Savary. This star consists of two pair wide binary ADS8119 AB; in this case HD 98231(ADS8119 A) as primary and HD98230 (ADS 8119 B) as secondary. We have collected the observational data consist of separation angular (ρ) and position angle (θ) fromthe observations in 1780 up to 2005 taken from Bosscha Observatory and other Observatories in the worl…
Since the Bosscha Observatory was established in 1923 researches on visual binary stars played an important role in astronomical studies in Indonesia. The visual binary of WDS 17190-3459 = MLO 4AB = HD156384 = HIP84709 was extensively observed at our observatory and other observatories. This system has already passed periastron three times since observed in the end of year 1876. The observation data is more than enough to construct an orbit. By using Thiele-Innes method we computed the orbit, and physical parameters are determined by using mass-luminosity relation. The result is presented in t…
Binary stars are present in all stellar systems, yet their role is far from being fully understood. We investigate the effect of unresolved binaries in the derivation of open clusters' mass by star counts. We start from the luminosity functions of five open clusters: IC 2714, NGC 1912, NGC 2099, NGC 6834 and NGC 7142. Luminosity functions are obtained via star counts extracted from the 2MASS database. The fraction of binaries is considered to be independent on stellar magnitude. We take into account different assumptions for the binary mass ratio distribution and assign binary masses using the…
Blue and Visual photoelectric light curves have been achieved for the eclipsing binary SW Lac in 1995. Nine moments of minimum light were derived. Period of 0.320854 days have been determined as the mean of those derived from blue and visual observations. B and V light curves have been analyzed using W-D code where the system has been viewed through the ellipsoidal model. The system geometrical and physical parameters were determined and compared with those published recently.
WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD=SA0 248342 has the proper motion +404. in right ascension and 105. in declination. Magnitude of each star is 7.84 for primary and 8.44 for secondary, separated by 320. from the quadruple system Kappa Tuc=LDS 42 = HJ 3423 AB. The visual binary star of WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD is historically one of the most important double star in constellation Tucana. We have collected the observational data consisting of separation angular (ρ) and position angle (θ) from the observations of 1897 up to 2001 taken at the Bosscha Observatory and other Observatories in the world. This study pr…
Differential astrometry measurements from the Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems have been combined with lower precision single-aperture measurements covering a much longer timespan (from eyepiece measurements, speckle interferometry, and adaptive optics) to determine improved visual orbits for 20 binary stars. In some cases, radial velocity observations exist to constrain the full three-dimensional orbit and determine component masses. The visual orbit of one of these binaries---alpha Com (HD 114378)---shows that the system is likely to have eclipses, despite its …
The LIGO/VIRGO detection of the gravitational waves from a binary merger system, GW170817, has put a clean and strong constraint on the tidal deformability of the merging objects. From this constraint, deep insights can be obtained in compact star equation of states, which has been one of the most puzzling problems for nuclear physicists and astrophysicists. Employing one of the most widely-used quark star EOS model, we characterize the star properties by the strange quark mass ($m_s$), an effective bag constant ($B_{\rm eff}$), the perturbative QCD correction ($a_4$), as well as the gap param…
We measure the photometric rotation periods of the components of multiple systems in young stellar associations to investigate the causes of the observed rotation period dispersion. We present the case of the wide binary AG Tri in the 23-Myr young beta Pictoris Association consisting of K4 + M1 dwarfs. Our multi-band, multi-season photometric monitoring allowed us to measure the rotation periods of both components P_A = 12.4d and P_B = 4.66d, to detect a prominent magnetic activity in the photosphere, likely responsible for the measured radial velocity variations, and for the first time, a fla…
Visual binary stars are the most abundant class of observed binaries. The most comprehensive list of data on visual binaries compiled recently by cross-matching the largest catalogues of visual binaries allowed a statistical investigation of observational parameters of these systems. The dataset was cleaned by correcting uncertainties and misclassifications, and supplemented with available parallax data. The refined dataset is free from technical biases and contains 3676 presumably physical visual pairs of luminosity class V with known angular separations, magnitudes of the components, spectra…
Double-close-binary quadruples (2+2 systems) are hierarchical systems of four stars where two short-period binary systems move around their common center of mass on a wider orbit. Using Gaia Early Data Release 3, we search for comoving pairs where both components are eclipsing binaries. We present eight 2+2 quadruple systems with inner orbital periods of $<$ 0.4 days and with outer separations of $\gtrsim 1000$ AU. All but one system are newly discovered by this work, and we catalog their orbital information measured from their light curves. We find that the occurrence rate of 2+2 quadruples i…
Summed many years of work at Pulkovo, the orbits of 67 wide pairs of visual double and multiple stars (included in 64 systems) which were obtained by the Apparent Motion Parameters (AMP) method are presented. This short arc determination orbit method is based on the most reliable astrometric and astrophysical data corresponding to one instant of time. The rest of the observations accumulated in the world serve to control the quality of the orbit and refine some parameters. All early determined AMP-orbits were compared with new observations, some of them were recalculated, new ones were added. …
Wolf-Rayet stars represent one of the final stages of massive stellar evolution. Relatively little is known about this short-lived phase and we currently lack reliable mass, distance, and binarity determinations for a representative sample. Here we report the first visual orbit for WR 140(=HD193793), a WC7+O5 binary system known for its periodic dust production episodes triggered by intense colliding winds near periastron passage. The IOTA and CHARA interferometers resolved the pair of stars in each year from 2003--2009, covering most of the highly-eccentric, 7.9 year orbit. Combining our resu…
The problem of estimating the total mass of a visual binary when its orbit is incomplete is treated with Bayesian methods. The posterior mean of a mass estimator is approximated by a triple integral over orbital period, time of periastron and orbital eccentricity. This reduction to 3-D from the 7-D space defined by the conventional Campbell parameters is achieved by adopting the Thiele-Innes elements and exploiting the linearity with respect to the four Thiele-Innes constants. The formalism is tested on synthetic observational data covering a variable fraction of a model binary's orbit. The po…
The orbits of visual binary systems still attract many of the working groups in astronomy. These orbits are the most important and reliable source of the stellar masse. In the present paper, we are going to compute orbits and dynamical masses of some visual binaries using an independent code. We used Kowalsky method to compute the geometrical elements. The dynamical elements (the period and the time of the periastron passage) are computed by implementing the double areal constant. We used the developed code to calculate the orbits for the four visual binaries, WDS J02262+3428, WDS J14310-0548,…
We present B and R band spectroastrometry of a sample of 45 Herbig Ae/Be stars in order to study their binary properties. All but one of the targets known to be binary systems with a separation of ~0.1-2.0 arcsec are detected by a distinctive spectroastrometric signature. Some objects in the sample exhibit spectroastrometric features that do not appear attributable to a binary system. We find that these may be due to light reflected from dusty halos or material entrained in winds. We present 8 new binary detections and 4 detections of an unknown component in previously discovered binary system…
Partial measurements of relative position are a relatively common event during the observation of visual binary stars. However, these observations are typically discarded when estimating the orbit of a visual pair. In this article we present a novel framework to characterize the orbits from a Bayesian standpoint, including partial observations of relative position as an input for the estimation of orbital parameters. Our aim is to formally incorporate the information contained in those partial measurements in a systematic way into the final inference. In the statistical literature, an imputati…
Astronomers do not have a complete picture of the effects of wide-binary companions (semimajor axes greater than 100 AU) on the formation and evolution of exoplanets. We investigate these effects using new data from Gaia EDR3 and the TESS mission to characterize wide-binary systems with transiting exoplanets. We identify a sample of 67 systems of transiting exoplanet candidates (with well-determined, edge-on orbital inclinations) that reside in wide visual binary systems. We derive limits on orbital parameters for the wide-binary systems and measure the minimum difference in orbital inclinatio…
