WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD=SA0 248342 has the proper motion +404. in right ascension and 105. in declination. Magnitude of each star is 7.84 for primary and 8.44 for secondary, separated by 320. from the quadruple system Kappa Tuc=LDS 42 = HJ 3423 AB. The visual binary star of WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD is historically one of the most important double star in constellation Tucana. We have collected the observational data consisting of separation angular (ρ) and position angle (θ) from the observations of 1897 up to 2001 taken at the Bosscha Observatory and other Observatories in the world. This study presents the recent status of orbit binary system WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD. By using Thiele Van den Bos method and empirical formula of Strand's Mass-Luminosity relation we have determined the orbit and mass of WDS 01158-6853 I-27CD. The results are; P=85.288 years, e=0.053, T =1911.23, i=27.93, Ω=52.83, ω=10.73, M1=0.7 Mo, M2=0.5 Mo, p=0".0589
Since the Bosscha Observatory was established in 1923 researches on visual binary stars played an important role in astronomical studies in Indonesia. The visual binary of WDS 17190-3459 = MLO 4AB = HD156384 = HIP84709 was extensively observed at our observatory and other observatories. This system has already passed periastron three times since observed in the end of year 1876. The observation data is more than enough to construct an orbit. By using Thiele-Innes method we computed the orbit, and physical parameters are determined by using mass-luminosity relation. The result is presented in t…
We have selected a set of 17 visual binaries that demonstrate great inconsistency between the systemic mass obtained through Kepler's Third Law as compared to that calculated through standard mass-luminosity and mass-spectrum relationships. A careful inspection of orbital data and parallaxes showed that the current orbits of nine binaries (WDS 00155-1608, WDS 00174+0853, WDS 05017+2050, WDS 06410+0954, WDS 16212-2536, WDS 17336-3706, WDS 19217-1557, WDS 20312+1116, and WDS 21118+5959) do not need to be improved, instead we recommend different parallax (distance) value for them. On the other ha…
Improved orbits are presented for the visual binaries WDS 02366+1227, WDS 02434-6643, WDS 03244-1539, WDS 08507+1800, WDS 09128-6055, WDS 11532-1540, WDS 17375+2419, and WDS 22408-0333. The latest orbits for these binaries were demonstrating a great inconsistency between the systemic mass obtained through Kepler's Third Law and that calculated as a sum of their components' mass through standard mass-luminosity and mass-spectrum relationships. Our improvement allowed us to obtain consistent systemic masses for WDS 02434-6643 and WDS 09128-6055 without a need for changing the Hipparcos parallax.…
The aim of this work are to find a Kepler's constant by using polynomial regression of the angular separation ρ= ρ(t) and the position angle θ= θ(t). The Kepler's constant obtained is used to derive the element of orbit. As a case study the angular separation and the position angle of the WDS 00063 +5826 and the WDS 04403-5857 were investigated. For calculating the element of orbit the Thiele-Innes van den Bos method is used. The rough data of the angular separation ρ(t) and the position angle θ(t) are taken from the US Naval Observatory, Washington. This work also presents the masses and abso…
The orbits of visual binary systems still attract many of the working groups in astronomy. These orbits are the most important and reliable source of the stellar masse. In the present paper, we are going to compute orbits and dynamical masses of some visual binaries using an independent code. We used Kowalsky method to compute the geometrical elements. The dynamical elements (the period and the time of the periastron passage) are computed by implementing the double areal constant. We used the developed code to calculate the orbits for the four visual binaries, WDS J02262+3428, WDS J14310-0548,…
The new-found prevalence of extremely low mass (ELM, Mhe<0.2 Msun) helium white dwarfs (WDs) in tight binaries with more massive WDs has raised our interest in understanding the nature of their mass transfer. Possessing small (Menv~1e-3 Msun) but thick hydrogen envelopes, these objects have larger radii than cold WDs and so initiate mass transfer of H-rich material at orbital periods of 6-10 minutes. Building on the original work of D'Antona et al., we confirm the 1e6 yr period of continued inspiral with mass transfer of H-rich matter and highlight that the inspiraling direct-impact double WD …
In this paper, an algorithm for the ephemerides of visual binaries in near-parabolic orbits for either elliptic or hyperbolic case has been developed. The algorithm uses the Gauss method for determining both the true anomaly and the radial distance. Applications of the algorithm are presented for the binaries ADS 11632, WDS 19553-0644, and WDS 01243-0655. The result obtained shows a good agreement and in some cases more accurate when compared with the observations as well as the predicted ephemerides.
Post-common-envelope binaries (PCEBs) consisting of a white dwarf (WD) and a main-sequence secondary star are ideal systems to constrain models of common-envelope (CE) evolution. Until very recently, observed samples of PCEBs have been too small to fully explore this potential, however the recently identified large and relatively homogenous sample of PCEBs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has significantly changed this situation. We here analyze the orbital period distributions of PCEBs containing He- and C/O-core WDs separately and investigate whether the orbital period of PCEBs is re…
We report the discovery of the fifth self-lensing binary in which a low-mass white dwarf (WD) gravitationally magnifies its 15th magnitude G-star companion, KIC 8145411, during eclipses. The system was identified from a pair of such self-lensing events in the Kepler photometry, and was followed up with the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) on the 1.5m telescope at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory and the High-Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru 8.2m telescope. A joint analysis of the TRES radial velocities, the HDS spectrum, and the Kepler photometry of the primary…
Compact binary white dwarfs (WDs) undergoing orbital decay due to gravitational radiation can experience significant tidal heating prior to merger. In these WDs, the dominant tidal effect involves the excitation of outgoing gravity waves in the inner stellar envelope and the dissipation of these waves in the outer envelope. As the binary orbit decays, the WDs are synchronized from outside in (with the envelope synchronized first, followed by the core). We examine the deposition of tidal heat in the envelope of a Carbon-Oxygen WD and study how such tidal heating affects the structure and evolut…
We present the discovery of 17 low mass white dwarfs (WDs) in short-period P<1 day binaries. Our sample includes four objects with remarkable log(g)~5 surface gravities and orbital solutions that require them to be double degenerate binaries. All of the lowest surface gravity WDs have metal lines in their spectra implying long gravitational settling times or on-going accretion. Notably, six of the WDs in our sample have binary merger times <10 Gyr. Four have >=0.9 Msun companions. If the companions are massive WDs, these four binaries will evolve into stable mass transfer AM CVn systems and po…
Tidal dissipation in compact white dwarf (WD) binary systems significantly influences the physical conditions (such as surface temperature and rotation rate) of the WDs prior to mass transfer or merger. In these systems, the dominant tidal effects involve the excitation of gravity waves and their dissipation in the outer envelope of the star. We calculate the amplitude of tidally excited gravity waves in low-mass (0.3M_\odot) helium-core (He) WDs as a function of the tidal forcing frequency ω. Like carbon-oxygen (CO) WDs studied in our previous paper, we find that the dimensionless tidal torqu…
Extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses <0.25 Msun are rare objects that result from compact binary evolution. Here, we present a targeted spectroscopic survey of ELM WD candidates selected by color. The survey is 71% complete and has uncovered 18 new ELM WDs. Of the 7 ELM WDs with follow-up observations, 6 are short-period binaries and 4 have merger times less than 5 Gyr. The most intriguing object, J1741+6526, likely has either a pulsar companion or a massive WD companion making the system a possible supernova Type Ia or .Ia progenitor. The overall ELM Survey has now identifi…
We address the physical nature of subdwarf A-type (sdA) stars and their possible link to extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs). The two classes of objects are confused in low-resolution spectroscopy. However, colors and proper motions indicate that sdA stars are cooler and more luminous, and thus larger in radius, than published ELM WDs. We demonstrate that surface gravities derived from pure hydrogen models suffer a systematic ~1 dex error for sdA stars, likely explained by metal line blanketing below 9000 K. A detailed study of five eclipsing binaries with radial velocity orbital solut…
We investigate the origin of close-in planets and related phenomena orbiting white dwarfs (WDs), which are thought to originate from orbits more distant from the star. We use the planetary architectures of the 75 multiple-planet systems (four, five and six planets) detected orbiting main-sequence stars to build 750 dynamically analogous templates that we evolve to the WD phase. Our exploration of parameter space, although not exhaustive, is guided and restricted by observations and we find that the higher the multiplicity of the planetary system, the more likely it is to have a dynamical insta…
Extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs) are helium WDs with a mass less than $\sim$$0.3\rm\;M_\odot$. Most ELM WDs are found in double degenerates (DDs) in the ELM Survey led by Brown and Kilic. These systems are supposed to be significant gravitational-wave sources in the mHz frequency. In this paper, we firstly analyzed the observational characteristics of ELM WDs and found that there are two distinct groups in the ELM WD mass and orbital period plane, indicating two different formation scenarios of such objects, i.e. a stable Roche lobe overflow channel (RL channel) and common envelope ej…
Recent studies of the stellar population in the solar neighborhood (<20 pc) suggest that there are undetected white dwarfs (WDs) in multiple systems with main sequence companions. Detecting these hidden stars and obtaining a more complete census of nearby WDs is important for our understanding of binary and galactic evolution, as well as the study of explosive phenomena. In an attempt to uncover these hidden WDs, we present intermediate resolution spectroscopy over the wavelength range 3000-25000 Å of 101 nearby M dwarfs (dMs), observed with the Very Large Telescope X-Shooter spectrograph. For…
Accretion-induced collapse (AIC) from oxygen/neon/magnesium composition white dwarf (ONeMg WD) + stripped helium (He) star binaries is one promising channel to form peculiar neutron star objects. It has been discussed that the WD's magnetic field may alter the accretion phase in the WD binary evolution. By considering non-magnetic and sufficiently magnetized WDs, we investigate the evolution of ONeMg WD + He star binaries with detailed stellar evolution and binary population synthesis simulations. The role of the magnetically confined accretion in the possible formation pathway for like millis…
A large number of low-mass (< 0.20 M_sun) helium white dwarfs (He WDs) have recently been discovered. The majority of these are orbiting another WD or a millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a close binary system; a few examples are found to show pulsations or to have a main-sequence star companion. There appear to be discrepancies between the current theoretical modelling of such low-mass He WDs and a number of key observed cases, indicating that their formation scenario remains to be fully understood. Here we investigate the formation of detached proto-He WDs in close-orbit low-mass X-ray binaries (LM…
Detached WD+MS PCEBs are perhaps the most suitable objects for testing predictions of close-compact binary-star evolution theories, in particular, CE evolution. The population of WD+MS PCEBs has been simulated by several authors in the past and compared with observations. However, most of those predictions did not take the possible contributions to the envelope ejection from additional sources of energy (mostly recombination energy) into account. Here we update existing binary population models of WD+MS PCEBs by assuming that a fraction of the recombination energy available within the envelope…
Double Degenerate systems (DDs) are supposed to be significant gravitational wave (GW) sources for future space-based gravitational-wave detectors, e.g., Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Recently, one type of DDs with Extremely low-mass WD (ELM WD; $\leq 0.30\; M_\odot$) companions has been largely found in the ELM Survey. They have very short orbital periods and are therefore important sources for LISA detection. Besides, due to the thick envelope of ELM WDs compared with massive WDs (e.g. CO WDs), they are much easier to be found by the combination of electromagnetic (EM) and GW ob…
We present the discovery of 11 new double degenerate systems containing extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs). Our radial velocity observations confirm that all of the targets have orbital periods $\leq$ 1 day. We perform spectroscopic fits and provide a complete set of physical and binary parameters. We review and compare recent evolutionary calculations and estimate that the systematic uncertainty in our mass determinations due to differences in the evolutionary models is small ($\approx$ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$). Five of the new systems will merge due to gravitational wave radiation within a H…
Aims: We investigated in detail the system WDS 19312+3607, whose primary is an active M4.5Ve star previously thought to be young (tau ~ 300-500 Ma) based on high X-ray luminosity. Methods: We collected intermediate- and low-resolution optical spectra taken with 2 m-class telescopes, photometric data from the $B$ to 8 mum bands, and eleven astrometric epochs with a time baseline of over 56 years for the two components in the system, G 125-15 and G 125-14. Results: We derived M4.5V spectral types for both stars, confirmed their common proper motion, estimated the heliocentric distance and projec…
We show that a White Dwarf-White Dwarf (WD-WD) binary with semi-major axis a=1-300 AU, which is orbited by a stellar mass outer perturber with a moderate pericenter r_{p, out} \sim 3-10 x a, has a few percent chance of experiencing a head-on collision within ~5 Gyr. Such a perturber is sufficiently distant to allow the triple system to remain intact for millions of orbits while efficiently exchanging angular momentum with the WD-WD binary. In ~ 5% of the initial orientations, the inner orbit efficiently scans the (equal energy) phase space in the region of zero angular momentum. In these syste…
Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are generally believed to be old neutron stars (NSs) which have been spun up to high rotation rates via accretion of matter from a companion star in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). However, many details of this recycling scenario remain to be understood. Here we investigate binary evolution in close LMXBs to study the formation of radio MSPs with low-mass helium white dwarf companions (He WDs) in tight binaries with orbital periods P_orb = 2-9 hr. In particular, we examine: i) if such observed systems can be reproduced from theoretical modelling using standard prescr…

A large number of extremely low-mass helium white dwarfs (ELM WDs) have been discovered in recent years. The majority of them are found in close binary systems suggesting they are formed either through a common-envelope phase or via stable mass transfer in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) or a cataclysmic variable (CV) system. Here, we investigate the formation of these objects through the LMXB channel with emphasis on the proto-WD evolution in environments with different metallicities. We study, for the first time, the combined effects of rotational mixing and element diffusion (e.g. gravitatio…
Extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs) are the result of binary evolution in which a low-mass donor star is stripped by its companion leaving behind a helium-core white dwarf. We explore the formation of ELM WDs in binary systems considering the Convection And Rotation Boosted magnetic braking treatment. Our evolutionary sequences were calculated using the MESA code, with initial masses of 1.0 and 1.2 Msun (donor), and 1.4 (accretor), compatible with low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) systems. We obtain ELM models in the range 0.15 to 0.27 Msun from a broad range of initial orbital periods, 1 t…
The recently proposed "dynamically driven double-degenerate double-detonation" (D6) scenario posits that Type Ia supernovae (SNe) may occur during dynamically unstable mass transfer between two white dwarfs (WDs) in a binary. This scenario predicts that the donor WD may then survive the explosion and be released as a hypervelocity runaway, opening up the exciting possibility of identifying remnant stars from D6 SNe and using them to study the physics of detonations that produce Type Ia SNe. Three candidate D6 runaway objects have been identified in Gaia data. The observable runaway velocity of…
Although the theory of cataclysmic variable (CV) evolution is able to explain several observational aspects, strong discrepancies have existed for decades between observations and theoretical predictions of the orbital period distribution, the location of the minimum period, and the space density of CVs. Moreover, it has been shown in the last decade that the average white dwarf (WD) mass observed in CVs is significantly higher than the average mass in single WDs or in detached progenitors of CVs, and that there is an absence of helium-core WDs in CVs which is not observed in their immediate d…
We present results of a study of the central regions of NGC 6397 using Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys, focusing on a group of 24 faint blue stars that form a sequence parallel to, but brighter than, the more populated sequence of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs). Using F625W, F435W, and F658N filters with the Wide Field Channel we show that these stars, 18 of which are newly discovered, have magnitudes and colors consistent with those of helium-core white dwarfs (He WDs) with masses ~ 0.2-0.3 Msun. Their H-alpha--R625 colors indicate that they have strong H-alpha absor…
Galactic interacting double white dwarfs (DWD) are guaranteed gravitational wave (GW) sources for the GW detector LISA, with more than 10^4 binaries expected to be detected over the mission's lifetime. Part of this population is expected to be eccentric, and here we investigate the potential for constraining the white dwarf (WD) properties through apsidal precession in these binaries. We analyze the tidal, rotational, and general relativistic contributions to apsidal precession by using detailed He WD models, where the evolution of the star's interior is followed throughout the cooling phase. …
The bright, nearby DA-type white dwarf (WD) 40 Eridani B is orbited by the M dwarf 40 Eri C, allowing determination of the WD's mass. Until recently, however, the mass depended on orbital elements determined four decades ago, and that mass was so low that it created several astrophysical puzzles. Using new astrometric measurements, the binary-star group at the U.S. Naval Observatory has revised the dynamical mass upward, to $0.573\pm0.018\,M_\odot$. In this paper we use model-atmosphere analysis to update other parameters of the WD, including effective temperature, surface gravity, radius, and…
We calculate the stellar evolution of both white dwarfs (WDs) in AM CVn binaries with orbital periods of $P_{\mathrm{orb}} \approx 5-70$ minutes. We focus on the cases where the donor starts as a $M_{\mathrm{He}} < 0.2 \, M_{\odot}$ Helium WD and the accretor is a $M_{\mathrm{WD}} > 0.6 \, M_{\odot}$ WD. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we simultaneously evolve both WDs assuming conservative mass transfer and angular momentum loss from gravitational radiation. This self-consistent evolution yields the important feedback of the properties of the donor on the mass tr…
We study the physical and evolutionary properties of the "WD family" of AM CVn stars by computing realistic models of IDD systems. We evaluate self-consistently both the mass transfer rate from the donor, as determined by GW emission and interaction with the binary companion, and the thermal response of the accretor to mass deposition. We find that, after the onset of mass transfer, all the considered systems undergo a strong non-dynamical He-flash. However, due to the compactness of these systems, the expanding accretors fill their Roche lobe very soon, thus preventing the efficient heating o…
Binary evolution predicts a population of helium core (M < 0.5 Msol) white dwarfs (WDs) that are slowly accreting hydrogen-rich material from low mass main sequence or brown dwarf donors with orbital periods less than four hours. Four binaries are presently known in the Milky Way that will reach such a mass-transferring state in a few Gyr. Despite these predictions and observations of progenitor binaries, there are still no secure cases of helium core WDs among the mass-transferring cataclysmic variables (CVs). This led us to calculate the fate of He WDs once accretion begins at a rate Mdot < …
Blue stragglers stars (BSSs) in M67 have attracted attention from observations and theory to unravel their formation mechanisms. In the series of Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT on AstroSat) study of Open clusters (UOCS), here we report the detection of hot companions to 4 more BSSs (WOCS 2013, WOCS 3013, WOCS 4006 and WOCS 5005), using Far-UV photometry obtained in two epochs from UVIT. We characterise the hot companions to be low to extremely low mass (LM/ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with Teff ~ 13-23kK, R/Rsun ~ 0.035-0.051, M/Msun ~ 0.19-0.3 and age ~ 25-300 Myr using WD models. Two BSSs (…
We consider the evolution of stellar hierarchical quadruple systems in the 2+2 (two binaries orbiting each other's barycentre) and 3+1 (triple orbited by a fourth star) configurations. In our simulations, we take into account the effects of secular dynamical evolution, stellar evolution, tidal evolution and encounters with passing stars. We focus on type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) driven by collisions of carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs). Such collisions can arise from several channels: (1) collisions due to extremely high eccentricities induced by secular evolution, (2) collisions following a…
Accretion-induced collapse (AIC) occurs when an O/Ne white dwarf (WD) grows to nearly the Chandrasekhar mass ($M_{\rm Ch}$), reaching central densities that trigger electron captures in the core. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics ($\texttt{MESA}$), we present the first true binary simulations of He star + O/Ne WD binaries, focusing on a $1.5 M_\odot$ He star in a 3 hour orbital period with $1.1-1.3 M_\odot$ O/Ne WDs. The helium star fills its Roche lobe after core helium burning is completed and donates helium on its thermal timescale to the WD, $\dot{M}\approx3\times10^{-6…
We have known for a long time that many of the measured white dwarf (WD) masses in cataclysmic variables (CVs) significantly exceed the mean mass of single WDs. This was thought to be related to observational biases, but recent high-precision measurements of WD masses in a great number of CVs are challenging this interpretation. We review the measured WD masses of CVs, determine the WD-mass distribution of an extensive sample of post-common-envelope binaries (PCEBs) that are representative for the progenitors of the current CV population (pre-CVs) and compare both distributions. We calculate t…
We carried out a spectroscopic investigation of single lined white dwarfs (WDs) in double degenerate (DD) systems and discuss their binary evolution. Simulated spectra of the Halpha region are used to derive upper limits on the temperature of the invisible component and thus lower limits on the cooling age. This is done for a range of hypothetical secondary masses and a minimum cooling age deduced. Results are compared with the well known parameters of the visible primary, which allows us to determine a lower limit for the cooling age difference of both WDs. Most of the ten systems in our samp…

In this paper, we consider triple systems composed of main-sequence (MS) stars, and their internal evolution due to stellar and binary evolution. Our focus is on triples that produce white dwarfs (WDs), where Roche lobe overflow of an evolving tertiary triggers accretion onto the inner binary via a circumbinary disk (CBD) driving it toward a mass ratio of unity. We present a combination of analytic- and population synthesis-based calculations performed using the \texttt{SeBa} code to constrain the expected frequency of such systems, given a realistic initial population of MS triples, and provi…
The white dwarf (WD) + helium (He) star binary channel plays an important role in the single degenerate scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Previous studies on the WD + main sequence star evolution have shown that the magnetic fields of WDs may significantly influence their accretion and nuclear burning processes. In this work we focus on the evolution of magnetized WD + He star binaries with detailed stellar evolution and binary population synthesis (BPS) calculations. In the case of magnetized WDs, the magnetic fields may disrupt the inner regions of the accretion di…
