Factorizing the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations is a highly non trivial task when the transverse momentum of the outgoing hadron with respect to the thrust axis is taken into account. We work in a scheme that allows to factorize the $e^+e^- \to HX$ cross section as a convolution of a calculable hard coefficient and a Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) fragmentation function. The result, differential in $z_h$, $P_T$ and thrust, will be given to all orders in perturbation theory and explicitly computed to Next to Leading Order (NLO) and Next to Leading Log (NLL) accuracy. The predictions obtained from our computation, applying the simplest and most natural ansatz to model the non-perturbative part of the TMD, are in exceptional agreement with the experimental measurements of the BELLE Collaboration. The factorization scheme we propose relates the TMD parton densities defined in 1-hadron and 2-hadron processes, restoring the possibility to perform global phenomenological studies of TMD physics including experimental data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan processes, $e^+e^- \to H_1 H_2 X$ and $e^+e^- \to HX$ annihilations.
We analyze transverse thrust in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory and obtain a factorized expression for the cross section that permits resummation of terms enhanced in the dijet limit to arbitrary accuracy. The factorization theorem for this hadron-collider event-shape variable involves collinear emissions at different virtualities and suffers from a collinear anomaly. We compute all its ingredients at the one-loop order, and show that the two-loop input for next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy can be extracted numerically, from existing fixed-order codes.
We calculate the average multiplicity of jets in e+e- annihilation as a function of both the jet resolution parameter, y_cut, and the thrust T. Our result resums to all orders the leading and next-to-leading logarithms in y_cut and 1-T, and is exact up to second order in alpha_s. This allows a comparison between the number of jets found using jet algorithms and the ability to distinguish different jet topologies via thrust.
Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renor…
The lack of convergence of the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power (NLP) factorization theorems prevents the applications of existing methods to resum power-suppressed large logarithmic corrections in collider physics. We consider thrust distribution in the two-jet region for the flavour-nonsinglet off-diagonal contribution, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair, which is power-suppressed. With the help of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we obtain a factorization formula, where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergen…
Dressed Gluon Exponentiation (DGE) is used to calculate the thrust and the heavy-jet mass distributions in e+e- annihilation in the two-jet region. We perform a detailed analysis of power corrections, taking care of the effect of hadron masses on the measured observables. In DGE the Sudakov exponent is calculated in a renormalization-scale invariant way using renormalon resummation. Neglecting the correlation between the hemispheres in the two-jet region, we express the thrust and the heavy-jet mass distributions in terms of the single-jet mass distribution. This leads to a simple description …
In this work, we complete the calculation of the soft part of the two-loop integrated jet thrust distribution in e+e- annihilation. This jet mass observable is based on the thrust cone jet algorithm, which involves a veto scale for out-of-jet radiation. The previously uncomputed part of our result depends in a complicated way on the jet cone size, r, and at intermediate stages of the calculation we actually encounter a new class of multiple polylogarithms. We employ an extension of the coproduct calculus to systematically exploit functional relations and represent our results concisely. In con…
Factorization theorems allow to separate out the universal, non-perturbative content of the hadronic cross section from its perturbative part, which can be computed in perturbative QCD, up to the desired order. In this paper, we derive a rigorous proof of factorization of the $e^+ e^- \to h\,X$ cross section, sensitive to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron with respect to the thrust axis, in a completely general framework, based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman approach. The results are explicitly computed to NLO-NLL accuracy and subsequently generalized to all orders in perturbation t…
Structure function of e+e- to hadrons cross section proportional to the longitudinal part of the hadron tensor is power suppressed with respect to an event shape variable in the two-jet region. In the SCET framework, we study the event shape distribution for this structure function to NLL level of accuracy. As, a result we obtain the angular distribution of hadron jets as a function of the thrust, in the two jet region. We further examine effects of non-perturbative hadronization corrections by adopting a shape function that reproduce the observed event shape distributions. Impacts of our find…
We calculate the subleading corrections to the thrust rate using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory to factorize the rate and match onto jet and soft operators that describe the degrees of freedom of the relevant scales. We work in the perturbative regime where all the scales are well above Λ_QCD. The thrust rate involves an incomplete sum over final states that is enforced by a measurement operator. Subleading corrections require matching onto not only the higher dimensional dijet operators, but also matching onto subleading measurement operators in the effective theory. We explicitly show how t…
The heavy jet mass distribution in e+e- collisions is computed to next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNNLL) and next-to-next-to leading fixed order accuracy (NNLO). The singular terms predicted from the resummed distribution are confirmed by the fixed order distributions allowing a precise extraction of the unknown soft function coefficients. A number of quantitative and qualitative comparisons of heavy jet mass and the related thrust distribution are made. From fitting to ALEPH data, a value of alpha_s is extracted, alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1220 +/- 0.0031, which is larger than, but not in co…
We propose the addition of a new "soft-collinear" mode to soft collinear effective theory (SCET) below the usual soft scale to factorize and resum logarithms of jet radii $R$ in jet cross sections. We consider exclusive 2-jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions with an energy veto $Λ$ on additional jets. The key observation is that there are actually two pairs of energy scales whose ratio is $R$: the transverse momentum $QR$ of the energetic particles inside jets and their total energy $Q$, and the transverse momentum $ΛR$ of soft particles that are cut out of the jet cones and their energy …
We evaluate the multiplicity of hadrons in the $e^+e^-$-annihilation at a given thrust $T$ in the modified leading-log approximation, including $O(\sqrt{α_s})$ corrections. The calculation is done at a large value of $τ=1-T$ by the use of the factorisation which takes place in the one-particle-inclusive cross section at a given $τ$. At a small $τ$, a different type of factorisation takes place, which also enable us to evaluate the multiplicity. Two approaches are compared numerically. Measuring this quantity near $τ=1/3$, we can determine the multiplicity ratio between a gluon-jet and a quark-…
When the allowed range of an observable grows order-by-order in perturbation theory, its perturbative expansion can have discontinuities (as in the $C$ parameter) or discontinuities in its derivatives (as in thrust or heavy jet mass) called Sudakov shoulders. We explore the origin of these logarithms using both perturbation theory and effective field theory. We show that for thrust and heavy jet mass, the logarithms arise from kinematic configurations with narrow jets and deduce the next-to-leading logarithmic series. The left-shoulder logarithms in heavy jet mass ($ρ$) of the form $r\ α_s^n \…
We present a factorization framework that takes into account the production of heavy quarks through gluon splitting in the thrust distribution for e+ e- --> hadrons. The explicit factorization theorems and some numerical results are displayed in the dijet region where the kinematic scales are widely separated, which can be extended systematically to the whole spectrum. We account for the necessary two-loop matrix elements, threshold corrections, and include resummation up to N3LL order. We include nonperturbative power corrections through a field theoretical shape function, and remove the O(La…
We investigate the exclusive jet mass distribution in e+e- events, defined with a veto on the out-of-jet radiation, at two-loop order. In particular, we calculate the two-loop soft function, which is required to describe this distribution in the threshold region. When combined with other ingredients using soft-collinear effective theory, this generates the complete singular distribution for jet thrust, the sum of the jet masses, at two-loop order. The result is in excellent agreement with full QCD. The integrated jet thrust distribution is found to depend in an intricate way on both the finite…
Quantum computing holds the promise of substantially speeding up computationally expensive tasks, such as solving optimization problems over a large number of elements. In high-energy collider physics, quantum-assisted algorithms might accelerate the clustering of particles into jets. In this study, we benchmark quantum annealing strategies for jet clustering based on optimizing a quantity called "thrust" in electron-positron collision events. We find that quantum annealing yields similar performance to exact classical approaches and classical heuristics, but only after tuning the annealing pa…
From soft-collinear effective theory one can derive a factorization formula for the e+e- thrust distribution dsigma/dtau with tau = 1-T that is applicable for all tau. The formula accommodates available O(alpha_s^3) fixed-order QCD results, resummation of logarithms at NNNLL order, a universal nonperturbative soft function for hadronization effects, factorization of nonperturbative effects in subleading power contributions, bottom mass effects and QED corrections. We emphasize that the use of Monte Carlos to estimate hadronization effects is not compatible with high-precision, high-order analy…
Resummation of hadron collision cross sections, when the measurement imposes a hierarchy of scales, relies on factorization. Cancellation of Glauber / Coulomb gluons is a necessary condition for factorization. For Drell-Yan-like processes, the known proofs of cancellation of Glauber gluons are not applicable when jet vetoes are introduced, via jet algorithms or event shape variables such as the beam thrust. A priori, this does not rule out the possibility that an unknown new cancellation mechanism exists, or the possibility that a generalized factorization formalism is correct. To resolve the …
Soft drop, a technique originally developed in the context of jet physics in proton-proton collisions in order to reduce the contamination from non-perturbative effects, is applied to event shapes in electron-positron annihilation. In particular, we study the thrust distribution at the $Z$ pole and show that the region where non-perturbative corrections due to the hadronisation process are small is considerably extended if soft drop is applied. Therefore, we argue that the use of soft drop to reduce hadronisation effects is potentially of great benefit in the context of strong coupling determi…
We have calculated the leading and next-to-leading logarithm coefficients of $O(α_s^2)$ $e^+e^-$ annihilation jet cross sections, thrust distribution and energy-energy correlation in the two-jet limit when the jet resolution and the event shape variables vanish. We have compared our results with expectations based on leading logarithm approximations used to resum the pertubative cross sections where this is possible. There is good agreement for the leading and next-to-leading coefficients of jet cross sections in the Durham scheme. Also for the thrust distribution and energy-energy correlation…
We investigate the theoretical predictions for thrust distribution in the electron positron annihilation to three-jets process at NNLO for different values of the number of flavors, $N_f$. To determine the distribution along the entire renormalization group flow from the highest energies to zero energy we consider the number of flavors near the upper boundary of the conformal window. In this regime of number of flavors the theory develops a perturbative infrared interacting fixed point. We then consider also the QED thrust obtained as the limit $N_c \rightarrow 0$ of the number of colors. In t…
At the LHC and Tevatron strong initial-state radiation (ISR) plays an important role. It can significantly affect the partonic luminosity available to the hard interaction or contaminate a signal with additional jets and soft radiation. An ideal process to study ISR is isolated Drell-Yan production, pp -> X l+l- without central jets, where the jet veto is provided by the hadronic event shape beam thrust tau_B. Most hadron collider event shapes are designed to study central jets. In contrast, requiring tau_B << 1 provides an inclusive veto of central jets and measures the spectrum of ISR. For t…
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable. In addition the NNLO results for the jet rates corresponding to the Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge jet algorithms are presented.
We report on recent study of the production of forward di-jets in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider with Improved Transversal Momentum Factorization \cite{vanHameren:2016ftb}. The results as compared to results obtained within High Energy Factorization show noticable effects related to detailed treatment of nonlinear effects.
This article gives the perturbative NNLO results for the moments of the most commonly used event shape variables associated to three-jet events in electron-positron annihilation: Thrust, heavy jet mass, wide jet broadening, total jet broadening, C parameter and the Durham three-to-two jet transition variable.
Factorization underpins our ability to make predictions at the LHC, both in Monte Carlo simulations and direct calculations. An improved theoretical understanding of jet substructure can lead to calculations that can confront data and validate the Monte Carlo description of jets. We derive constraints on jet substructure algorithms from factorization, focusing on the broad class of jet observables where the soft and collinear dynamics of QCD dominate. A necessary condition for factorization is that the phase space constraints on soft and collinear dynamics for a given observable are independen…
Factorization is the central ingredient in any theoretical prediction for collider experiments. We introduce a factorization formalism that can be applied to any desired observable, like event shapes or jet observables, for any number of jets and a wide range of jet algorithms in leptonic or hadronic collisions. This is achieved by using soft-collinear effective theory to prove the formal factorization of a generic fully-differential cross section in terms of a hard coefficient, and generic jet and soft functions. In this formalism, whether a given observable factorizes in the usual sense, dep…
We derive a factorization theorem for the jet mass distribution with a given $p_T^J$ for the inclusive production, where $p_T^J$ is a large jet transverse momentum. Considering the small jet radius limit $(R\ll 1)$ we factorize the scattering cross section into a partonic cross section, the fragmentation function to a jet, and the jet mass distribution function. The decoupled jet mass distributions for quark and gluon jets are well-normalized and scale invariant. And they can be extracted from the ratio of two scattering cross sections such as $dσ/(dp_T^JdM_J^2)$ and $dσ/dp_T^J$. When $M_J \si…
Jet broadening is an event-shape variable probing the transverse momenta of particles inside jets. It has been measured precisely in e+e- annihilations and is used to extract the strong coupling constant. The factorization of the associated cross section at small values of the broadening is afflicted by a collinear anomaly. Based on an analysis of this anomaly, we present the first all-order expressions for jet-broadening distributions, which are free of large perturbative logarithms in the two-jet limit. Our formulae reproduce known results at next-to-leading logarithmic order but also extend…
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm. Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production, the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to…
We analyze the effects of jet algorithms on each factorized part of the dijet cross sections in $e^+ e^-$ scattering using the soft-collinear effective theory. The jet function and the soft function with a cone-type jet algorithm and the Sterman-Weinberg jet algorithm are computed to next-to-leading order in $α_s$, and are shown to be infrared finite using the dimensional regularization. The integrated and unintegrated jet functions are presented, and compared with other types of jet functions.
We demonstrate the consistency at the next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) level of a factorization theorem based on Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) for jet shapes in e+e- collisions. We consider measuring jet observables in exclusive multijet final states defined with cone and k_T-type jet algorithms. Consistency of the factorization theorem requires that the renormalization group evolution of hard, jet, and soft functions is such that the physical cross-section is independent of the factorization scale mu. The anomalous dimensions of the various factorized pieces, however, depend on the …
Broadening is a classic jet observable that probes the transverse momentum structure of jets. Traditionally, broadening has been measured with respect to the thrust axis, which is aligned along the (hemisphere) jet momentum to minimize the vector sum of transverse momentum within a jet. In this paper, we advocate measuring broadening with respect to the "broadening axis", which is the direction that minimizes the scalar sum of transverse momentum within a jet. This approach eliminates many of the calculational complexities arising from recoil of the leading parton, and observables like the jet…
The next-to-leading corrections to the jet vertex which is relevant for the Mueller-Navelet jets production in hadronic collisions and for the forward jet cross section in lepton-hadron collisions are presented in the context of a k_t factorizazion formula which resums the leading and next-to-leading logarithms of the energy. Both the quark- and gluon-initiated contribution are now computed. This completes the framework for a full phenomenological analysis of Mueller-Navelet jets in NL log(s) approximation. Forward jets phenomenology still requires the NL photon impact factor.
We present a preliminary study of both Single and Double Parton Scattering contributions to the inclusive 4-jet production in the kt-factorization framework at Leading Order and $E_{CM} = 7$ TeV. We compare our results to collinear results in the literature and to the ATLAS and CMS data at 8 and 7 TeV respectively. We also discuss the importance of double parton scattering for relatively soft cuts on the jet transverse momenta and find out that symmetric cuts do not quite suit well to kt-factorization predictions, because of a kinematic effect suppressing the double parton scattering contribut…
New physics searches at the LHC or Tevatron typically look for a specific number of hard jets, leptons and photons. To obtain an exclusive N-jet sample, one can measure the event shape "N-jettiness" τ_N and veto additional undesired jets by requiring τ_N <<1. However, this leads to large logarithms of τ_N in the cross section, that need to be summed for reliable theory predictions. For N=0 in hadronic collisions, τ_N reduces to the "beam thrust" eventshape τ_B. We derive a factorization theorem for pp -> XL, where a central jet veto τ_B<<1 is imposed on the hadronic final state X and L is non-…
To predict the jet mass spectrum at a hadron collider it is crucial to account for the resummation of logarithms between the transverse momentum of the jet and its invariant mass $m_J$. For small jet areas there are additional large logarithms of the jet radius $R$, which affect the convergence of the perturbative series. We present an analytic framework for exclusive jet production at the LHC which gives a complete description of the jet mass spectrum including realistic jet algorithms and jet vetoes. It factorizes the scales associated with $m_J$, $R$, and the jet veto, enabling in addition …
The linear k_\perp-factorization is part and parcel of the pQCD description of high energy hard processes off free nucleons. In the case of heavy nuclear targets the very concept of nuclear parton density becomes ill-defined as exemplified by the recent derivation [2] of nonlinear nuclear k_\perp-factorization for forward dijet production in DIS off nuclei. Here we report a derivation of the related breaking of k_\perp-factorization for single-jet processes. We present a general formalism and apply it to several cases of practical interest: open charm and quark and gluon jet production in the …
We consider the dijet cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation using the Georgi jet algorithm, or the maximizing jet algorithm. The cross section is factorized into the hard, collinear and soft parts. Each factorized function is computed to next-to-leading order, and is shown to be infrared finite. The large logarithms are resummed at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. By analyzing the phase space for the jet algorithm, the Georgi algorithm turns out to be equivalent to the Sterman-Weinberg and the cone-type algorithms.
Explicit applications of factorization theorems for processes at hadron colliders near the hadronic endpoint have largely focused on simple final states with either no jets (e.g., Drell-Yan) or one inclusive jet (e.g., deep inelastic scattering and prompt photon production). Factorization for the former type of process gives rise to a soft function that depends on timelike momenta, whereas the soft function for the latter type depends on null momenta. We derive in soft-collinear effective theory a factorization theorem that allows for an arbitrary number of jets, where the jets are defined wit…
We study the factorization scheme dependence of the next-to-leading order inclusive one jet cross section d sigma/dE_T. The scheme is varied parametrically along the direction that transforms the MSbar scheme to the DIS scheme: we introduce a parameter lambda such that lambda = 0 is MSbar and lambda = 1 is DIS. The factorization scale mu is also varied. We observe a change of +/- 9% in the cross section for E_T = 50 GeV when mu and lambda are varied in the range -2 < lambda < 2, E_T/8 < mu < 2 E_T. This grows to +/- 32% for E_T = 400 GeV.
Jet grooming algorithms are widely used in experimental analyses at hadron colliders to remove contaminating radiation from within jets. While the algorithms perform a great service to the experiments, their intricate algorithmic structure and multiple parameters has frustrated precision theoretic understanding. In this paper, we demonstrate that one particular groomer called soft drop actually makes precision jet substructure easier. In particular, we derive a factorization formula for a large class of soft drop jet substructure observables, including jet mass. The essential observation that …
We discuss the inclusive production of jets in the central region of rapidity in the context of k_T-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO). Calculations are performed in the Regge limit making use of the NLO BFKL results. We introduce a jet cone definition and carry out a proper phase--space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematic regions. We discuss two situations: scattering of highly virtual photons, which requires a symmetric energy scale to separate impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, where a non-symmetric scale choice is…
The inclusive production of jets in the central region of rapidity is studied in $k_T$-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD perturbation theory. Calculations are performed in the Regge limit making use of the NLO BFKL results. A jet cone definition is introduced and a proper phase--space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematic regions is carried out. Two situations are discussed: scattering of highly virtual photons, which requires a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, where a no…
We analyze three jet production in the central-forward and forward rapidity regions in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at LHC energies. Our calculation relies on high-energy factorization with a single off-shell gluon obeying small x evolution equation which includes saturation. The calculations are made using two independent Monte Carlo codes implementing tree-level gauge invariant off-shell matrix elements. We calculate differential cross sections for azimuthal decorrelations and unbalanced jet transverse momenta and discuss them in the context of differences in the evolution of the…
In this contribution we discuss the inclusive production of jets in central regions of rapidity in the context of $k_T$-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO). We work in the Regge limit of QCD and use the NLO BFKL results. A jet cone definition is proposed together with a phase-space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematics. We discuss scattering of highly virtual photons, with a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, with a non-symmetric scale choice.
We consider the Higgs boson production at high energy hadron colliders in the framework of the k_T-factorization approach. The attention is focused on the dominant gluon-gluon fusion subprocess. We calculate the total cross section and transverse momentum distributions of the inclusive Higgs production using unintegrated gluon distributions in a proton obtained from the full CCFM evolution equation. We show that k_T-factorization gives a possibility to investigate the associated Higgs boson and jets production. We calculate the transverse momentum distributions and study the Higgs-jet and jet-…
Many collider observables suffer from non-global logarithms not captured by standard resummation techniques. Classic examples are the light-jet mass event shape in the limit of small mass and the related hemisphere soft function. We derive factorization formulas for both of these and explicitly demonstrate that they capture all logarithms present at NNLO. These formulas achieve full scale separation and provide the basis for all-order resummations. A characteristic feature of non-global observables is that the soft radiation is driven by multi-Wilson-line operators, and the ones arising here m…
We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for photon-jet correlations in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of photon and jet. Different unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF) are included in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UPDFs used. The results of NLO collinear-factorization are shown for comparison.
We study the production of forward di-jets in proton-lead and proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Such configurations, with both jets produced in the forward direction, impose a dilute-dense asymmetry which allows to probe the gluon density of the lead or proton target at small longitudinal momentum fractions. Even though the jet momenta are always much bigger than the saturation scale of the target, $Q_s$, the transverse momentum imbalance of the di-jet system may be either also much larger than $Q_s$, or of the order $Q_s$, implying that the small-$x$ QCD dynamics involved…
We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for photon-jet correlations in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle between photon and jet as well as correlations in two-dimensional space of photon and jet transverse momenta. Different unintegrated gluon/parton distributions are used in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UGDF/UPDF used. The collinear NLO $2 \to 3$ contributions dominate over $k_t$-factorization cross section at small relati…
We study perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the distribution of the C parameter in e+e- annihilation using renormalon techniques. We perform an exact calculation of the characteristic function, corresponding to the C parameter differential cross section for a single off-shell gluon. We then concentrate on the two-jet region, derive the Borel representation of the Sudakov exponent in the large-beta_0 limit and compare the result to that of the thrust T. Analysing the exponent, we distinguish two ingredients: the jet function, depending on Q^2C, summarizing the effects of collinear rad…
From a detailed analysis of cone-jet cross sections in effective field theory, we obtain novel factorization theorems which separate the physics associated with different energy scales present in such processes. The relevant low-energy physics is encoded in Wilson lines along the directions of the energetic particles inside the jets. This multi-Wilson-line structure is present even for narrow-cone jets due to the relevance of small-angle soft radiation. We discuss the renormalization-group equations satisfied by these operators. Their solution resums all logarithmically enhanced contributions …
We study power corrections to the differential thrust, heavy mass and related event shape distributions in $e^+e^-$-annihilation, whose values, $e$, are proportional to jet masses in the two-jet limit, $e\to 0$. The factorization properties of these differential distributions imply that they may be written as convolutions of nonperturbative "shape" functions, describing the emission of soft quanta by the jets, and resummed perturbative cross sections. The infrared shape functions are different for different event shapes, and depend on a factorization scale, but are independent of the center-of…
We calculate the cross section of a pion diffraction dissociation in two jets with large transverse momenta originating from a hard gluon exchange between the pion constituents. To the leading logarithmic accuracy (in energy), the contribution coming from small transverse separations between the quark and the antiquark in the pion acquires the expected factorized form, the longitudinal momentum distribution of the jets being proportional to the pion distribution amplitude. The hard gluon exchange can in this case be considered as a part of the unintegrated gluon distribution. Beyond the leadin…
