To predict the jet mass spectrum at a hadron collider it is crucial to account for the resummation of logarithms between the transverse momentum of the jet and its invariant mass $m_J$. For small jet areas there are additional large logarithms of the jet radius $R$, which affect the convergence of the perturbative series. We present an analytic framework for exclusive jet production at the LHC which gives a complete description of the jet mass spectrum including realistic jet algorithms and jet vetoes. It factorizes the scales associated with $m_J$, $R$, and the jet veto, enabling in addition the systematic resummation of jet radius logarithms in the jet mass spectrum beyond leading logarithmic order. We discuss the factorization formulae for the peak and tail region of the jet mass spectrum and for small and large $R$, and the relations between the different regimes and how to combine them. Regions of experimental interest are classified which do not involve large nonglobal logarithms. We also present universal results for nonperturbative effects and discuss various jet vetoes.
A new version of the $k_T$ factorization approach is formulated for the high energy heavy quark production. The results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data at LHC energies.
We present hadron-level predictions from the Monte-Carlo generator CASCADE and numerical calculations of beauty quark and quarkonium production in the framework of the kt-factorization approach for LHC energies. Our predictions are compared with the CMS experimental data.
We calculate and analyze Z and W production in association with quark-antiquark pair in k_T-factorization. Numerical calculations are performed using the Monte Carlo generator CASCADE for proton proton collisions at LHC energy. We compare total and differential cross sections calculated in k_T-factorization approach with total differential cross sections obtained in LO and NLO calculations in collinear factorization approach. We provide strong evidence that some of the effects of the NLO and even higher order collinear calculation are already included in the LO k_T-factorization calculation.
We calculate the probability that the rapidity gaps in diffractive processes survive both eikonal and enhanced rescattering. We present arguments that enhanced rescattering, which violates soft-hard factorization, is not very strong. Accounting for NLO effects, there is no reason to expect that the black disc regime is reached at the LHC. We discuss the predictions for the survival of the rapidity gaps for exclusive Higgs production at the LHC.
The recent LHCb data for exclusive $J/ψ$ peripheral production at 13 TeV motivate an improved `NLO' analysis to estimate the gluon distribution at low $x$ in which we re-calculate the rapidity gap survival factors and use a more precise expression for the photon flux. We comment on the difference between the $k_T$ and collinear factorization approaches.
We discuss charm production at LHC. The production of single $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated in the $k_t$-factorization approach. We use several unintegrated gluon distributions from the literature. Differential distributions for several charmed mesons are presented and compared to recent results of the ALICE and LHCb collaborations. Some missing strength can be observed. Furthermore we discuss production of two $c \bar c$ pairs within a simple formalism of double-parton scattering (DPS). Surprisingly large cross sections, comparable to single-parton scattering (SPS) contribution to $c \bar c$ …
We consider possible saturation effects in the structure function $F_L$ at fixed W in HERA energy range and in $b\bar b-$production at LHC energies in the framework of $k_T-$facrorization approach.
In this paper, we calculate the inclusive rate of $W^{+} W^{-}$ pair production through leptonic decay channels $W^+W^- \to l^+ν_l + l^{\prime -} ν_{l'}$ in the $k_t$-factorization framework. We also consider the exclusive $W^{+} W^{-}$ pair production through the one-loop induced $gg \to H \to W^+W^-$ channel that is important for the study of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are compared with predictions from the Herwig 7 event generator in the collinear factorization framework and with the experimental data from the ATLAS and the CMS collaborations. It will be shown that o…
We study the possibility to analyse the data on inclusive prompt photon production at first LHC runs in the framework of the kt-factorization QCD approach. Our consideration is based on the amplitude for the production of a single photon associated with a quark pair in the fusion of two off-shell gluons. The quark component is taken into account separately using the quark-gluon Compton scatterring and quark-antiquark annihilation QCD subprocesses. The unintegrated parton densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription as well as the CCFM evolution equatio…
We reconsider the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in $pp$ collisions at the LHC energies in the framework of $k_T$-factorization approach. Our analysis is based on the ${\cal O}(αα_s)$ off-shell (depending on the transverse momenta of initial quarks and gluons) production amplitudes of $q^* g^* \to γq$ and $q^* \bar q^* \to γg$ partonic subprocesses and transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) quark and gluon densities in a proton, which are chosen in accordance with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. We show that the sub-leading high-order ${\cal O}(αα_s^2)$ contrib…
In the framework of the kt-factorization approach, we study the production of Higgs bosons associated with a heavy (beauty or top) quark pair at the CERN LHC collider conditions. Our consideration is based mainly on the off-shell gluon-gluon fusion suprocess g + g -> Q + Q + H. The corresponding matrix element squared have been calculated for the first time. We investigate the total and differential cross sections of bbH and ttH production taking into account also the non-negligible contribution from the q + q -> Q + Q + H mechanism. In the numerical calculations we use the unintegrated gluon …
In the framework of the kt-factorization approach, the production and polarization of prompt J/Psi mesons in pp collisions at the LHC energy 7 TeV is studied. Both the direct production mechanism as well as feed-down contributions from chic1, chic2 and psi' decays are taken into account. Our consideration is based on the color singlet model supplemented with the off-shell matrix elements for the corresponding partonic subprocesses. The unintegrated gluon densities in a proton are determined using the CCFM evolution equation as well the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. We compare our numerica…
We consider the production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons originating from the decays of $b$-flavored hadrons at the LHC using the $k_T$-factorization approach. Our analysis covers both inclusive charmonia production and production of $J/ψ$ mesons in association with $Z$ bosons. We apply the transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon density in a proton derived from Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation and adopt fragmentation functions based on the non-relativistic QCD factorization to describe the inclusive $b$-hadron decays into the different charmonium state…
We discuss the evaluation of the collinear single-logarithmic contributions to virtual electroweak corrections at high energies. More precisely, we proof the factorization of the mass singularities originating from loop diagrams involving collinear virtual gauge bosons coupled to external legs. We discuss, in particular, processes involving external longitudinal gauge bosons, which are treated using the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem. The proof of factorization is performed within the 't Hooft--Feynman gauge at one-loop order and applies to arbitrary electroweak processes that are not mas…
In the framework of the $k_T$-factorization, the prompt production of $η_c$ mesons at the LHC conditions is studied. Our consideration is based on the off-shell amplitudes for hard partonic subprocesses and on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) formalism for the formation of bound states. We try two latest parametrizations for noncollinear, or transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon densities derived from the Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) equation. We use the values of the nonperturbative matrix elements obtained from a combined fit of the $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ differential cross section…
Resummed QCD corrections to the transverse momentum ($Q_T$) distribution of the Standard Model Higgs boson, produced at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, are presented. The small $Q_T$ factorization formalism is reviewed, which is used to extend the standard hadronic factorization theorem to the low $Q_T$ region, with emphasis on the matching to the standard hadronic factorization. Comparison of the $Q_T$ predictions from the extended factorization and the parton shower method is performed.
We consider the production of $Z$ bosons associated with beauty quarks at the LHC using a combined $k_T$ + collinear QCD factorization approach, that interpolates between small $x$ and large $x$ physics. Our consideration is based on the off-shell gluon-gluon fusion subprocess $g^* g^* \to Z Q\bar Q$ at the leading order ${\cal O}(αα_s^2)$ (where the $Z$ boson further decays into a lepton pair), calculated in the $k_T$-factorization approach, and several subleading ${\cal O}(αα_s^2 )$ and ${\cal O}(αα_s^3 )$ subprocesses involving quark-antiquark and quark-gluon interactions, taken into accoun…
We investigate the inclusive Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at high energies in the framework of kt-factorization QCD approach. The attention is focused on the dominant off-shell gluon-gluon fusion subprocess, where the transverse momentum of incoming gluons are taken into account. The transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon densities of the proton are determined using the CCFM evolution equation as well as the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. We study the theoretical uncertainties of our calculations and perform the comparison with the results of traditiona…
We calculated a differential cross section of the Higgs boson production in the $h\to ZZ^*\to 4\ell$ decay channel within the framework of $k_T$-factorization. Results are obtained using an off-shell matrix element for the $g^*g^*\to h\to ZZ^*\to 4\ell$ process together with Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equations for an unintegrated gluon distribution function. We have presented a comparison of our results with the latest experimental measurements at $\sqrt{S}$ = 8 TeV and $\sqrt{S}$ = 13 TeV from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC. In addition to this, we have…
We investigate the inclusive Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC conditions using the $k_T$-factorization approach. Our analysis is based on the dominant off-shell gluon-gluon fusion subprocess (where the transverse momenta of initial gluons are taken into account) and covers $H \to γγ$, $H \to ZZ^* \to 4l$ (where $l = e,μ$) and $H \to W^+ W^- \to e^\pm μ^\mp ν\bar ν$ decay channels. The transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton were derived from Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini equation or, alternatively, were chosen in accor…
We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. In addition to standard collinear approach, for a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent (the unintegrated diffractive parton distributions) in proton are obtained with the help of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription where collinear diffractive PDFs are used as input. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. The resul…
Several important processes and analyses at the LHC are sensitive to higher-order perturbative corrections beyond what can currently be calculated at fixed order. One important class of logarithmic corrections are those which appear when the centre-of-mass energy of a QCD collision is much larger than the transverse momenta of the observed jets. We describe the High Energy Jets (HEJ) framework, which includes the dominant high-energy logarithms to provide all-order predictions for several LHC processes including Higgs, $W$, or $Z$ boson production in association with jets. We will summarise so…
We present a unified derivation of the resummation of Sudakov logarithms, directly from the factorization properties of cross sections in which they occur. We rederive in this manner the well-known exponentiation of leading and nonleading logarithmic enhancements near the edge of phase space for cross sections such as deeply inelastic scattering, which are induced by an electroweak hard scattering. For QCD hard-scattering processes, such as heavy-quark production, we show that the resummation of nonleading logarithms requires in general mixing in the space of the color tensors of the hard scat…
In the framework of kt-factorization approach, the production and polarization of prompt psi(2S) mesons in pp collisions at the LHC energies is studied. Our consideration is based on the non-relativistic QCD formalism for bound states and off-shell amplitudes for hard partonic subprocesses. The transverse momentum dependent (unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton were derived from Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini evolution equation or, alternatively, were chosen in accordance with Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The non-perturbative color-octet matrix elements were first deduced from …
Recently we have proved the factorization of NRQCD S-wave heavy quarkonium production at all orders in coupling constant. In this paper we extend this to prove the factorization of infrared divergences in $χ_{cJ}$ production from color singlet $c{\bar c}$ pair in non-equilibrium QCD at RHIC and LHC at all orders in coupling constant. This can be relevant to study the quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC.
$J/ψ$ suppression/production is one of the main signature of quark-gluon plasma detection at RHIC and LHC. In order to study $j/ψ$ suppression/production in high energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC, one needs to prove the factorization theorem of $j/ψ$ production in non-equilibrium QCD medium, otherwise one will predict infinite cross section of $j/ψ$. In this paper we prove factorization theorem of $j/ψ$ production in non-equilibrium QCD at RHIC and LHC at all order in coupling constant.
Recently we have proved NRQCD color octet factorization of S-wave and P-wave heavy quarkonia production at all orders in coupling constant in QCD in vacuum at high energy colliders in Eur. Phys. J. C76 (2016) 448 and in arXiv:1807.04722 [hep-ph] respectively. In this paper we extend this to prove NRQCD color octet factorization of P-wave heavy quarkonium production in non-equilibrium QCD at RHIC and LHC at all orders in coupling constant. This proof is necessary to study the quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC.
We calculate the QCD factors $a_1$ and $a_2$, entering the tests of factorization in non-leptonic heavy meson decays, beyond the leading logarithmic approximation in three renormalization schemes (NDR, HV, DRED). We investigate their $μ$--dependence and the renormalization scheme dependence. We point out that $a_1$ for B-decays depends very weakly on $\Lms$, $μ$ and the choice of the renormalization scheme. For $\Lms^{(5)}=225\pm85~MeV$ and $4~GeV\leqμ\leq 8~GeV$ we find $a_1=1.01\pm0.02$ in accordance with phenomenology. The $\Lms$, $μ$ and scheme dependences of $a_2$ are on the other hand si…
Recently we have proved the NRQCD factorization in heavy quarkonium production at high energy colliders at all orders in coupling constant. In this paper we extend this to non-equilibrium QCD and prove the NRQCD factorization in heavy quarkonium production at all orders in coupling constant in non-equilibrium QCD. This proof is necessary to study heavy quarkonium production from quark gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC.
We derive the high energy asymptotic of one- and two-loop corrections in the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic approximation to the differential cross section of $W$-pair production at the LHC. For large invariant mass of the W-pair the (negative) one-loop terms can reach more than 40%, which are partially compensated by the (positive) two-loop terms of up to 10%.
Jet grooming algorithms are widely used in experimental analyses at hadron colliders to remove contaminating radiation from within jets. While the algorithms perform a great service to the experiments, their intricate algorithmic structure and multiple parameters has frustrated precision theoretic understanding. In this paper, we demonstrate that one particular groomer called soft drop actually makes precision jet substructure easier. In particular, we derive a factorization formula for a large class of soft drop jet substructure observables, including jet mass. The essential observation that …
In the framework of kt-factorization approach, the production of prompt $χ_c$ mesons in pp collisions at the LHC energies is studied. The transverse momentum dependent (unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton were derived from Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini evolution equation or, alternatively, were chosen in accordance with Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. Taking into account both color singlet and color octet contributions, we de…
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm. Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production, the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to…
In this paper we study the factorization and resummation of s-channel single top quark production in the Standard Model at both the Tevatron and the LHC. We show that the production cross section in the threshold limit can be factorized into a convolution of hard function, soft function and jet function via soft-collinear-effective-theory (SCET), and resummation can be performed using renormalization group equation in the momentum space resummation formalism. We find that in general, the resummation effects enhance the Next-to-Leading-Order (NLO) cross sections by about $3%-5%$ at both the Tev…

From a detailed analysis of cone-jet cross sections in effective field theory, we obtain novel factorization theorems which separate the physics associated with different energy scales present in such processes. The relevant low-energy physics is encoded in Wilson lines along the directions of the energetic particles inside the jets. This multi-Wilson-line structure is present even for narrow-cone jets due to the relevance of small-angle soft radiation. We discuss the renormalization-group equations satisfied by these operators. Their solution resums all logarithmically enhanced contributions …
We calculate various azimuthal angle distributions for three jets produced in the forward rapidity region with transverse momenta $p_T>20\,\mathrm{GeV}$ in proton-proton (p-p) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at center of mass energy $5.02\,\,\mathrm{TeV}$. We use the multi-parton extension of the so-called small-$x$ Improved Transverse Momentum Dependent factorization (ITMD). We study effects related to change from the standard $k_T$-factorization to ITMD factorization as well as changes as one goes from p-p collision to p-Pb. We observe rather large differences in the distribution when we c…
Many collider observables suffer from non-global logarithms not captured by standard resummation techniques. Classic examples are the light-jet mass event shape in the limit of small mass and the related hemisphere soft function. We derive factorization formulas for both of these and explicitly demonstrate that they capture all logarithms present at NNLO. These formulas achieve full scale separation and provide the basis for all-order resummations. A characteristic feature of non-global observables is that the soft radiation is driven by multi-Wilson-line operators, and the ones arising here m…
To obtain more precise parton distribution functions (PDFs) it is important to include data on inclusive high transverse energy jet production in the global parton analyses. These data have high statistics and the NNLO terms in the perturbative QCD (pQCD) description are now available. Our aim is to reduce the uncertainty in the comparison of the jet data with pQCD. To ensure the best convergence of the pQCD series it is important to choose the appropriate factorization scales, $μ_F$. We show that it is possible to absorb and resum in the incoming PDFs and fragmentation function ($D$) an essen…
The predictions of Drell-Yan production of low-mass, lepton-pairs, at high rapidity at the LHC, are known to depend sensitively on the choice of factorization and renormalization scales. We show how this sensitivity can be greatly reduced by fixing the factorization scale of the LO contribution based on the known NLO matrix element, so that observations of this process at the LHC can make direct measurements of parton distribution functions in the low x domain; x less than about 10^{-4}.
We discuss prompt production of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC within NRQCD $k_t$-factorization approach using Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF). We include both direct color-singlet production ($g g \to J/ψg$) as well as a feed-down from $χ_c \to J/ψγ$ and $ψ' \to J/ψX$ decays. The production of the decaying mesons ($χ_c$ or $ψ'$) is also calculated within NRQCD $k_t$-factorization approach. The corresponding matrix elements for $g g \to J/ψ$ g, $g g \to ψ'g$ and $g g \to χ_c$ include parameters of the nonrelativistic space wave functions …
We review several most recent prompt-photon measurements at HERA and the Tevatron and discuss their implication for future measurements at the LHC. A comparison to Monte Carlo models, as well as to NLO QCD predictions based on the standard DGLAP and the kT-factorization approaches is discussed. Effects from renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties, as well as uncertainties on the gluon density distribution inside a proton are discussed.
New physics searches at the LHC or Tevatron typically look for a specific number of hard jets, leptons and photons. To obtain an exclusive N-jet sample, one can measure the event shape "N-jettiness" τ_N and veto additional undesired jets by requiring τ_N <<1. However, this leads to large logarithms of τ_N in the cross section, that need to be summed for reliable theory predictions. For N=0 in hadronic collisions, τ_N reduces to the "beam thrust" eventshape τ_B. We derive a factorization theorem for pp -> XL, where a central jet veto τ_B<<1 is imposed on the hadronic final state X and L is non-…
Heavy colored scalar particles appear in a variety of new physics (NP) models and could be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Knowing the total production cross section is important for searching for these states and establishing bounds on their masses and couplings. Using soft-collinear effective theory, we derive a factorization theorem for the process $pp\to SX$, where $S$ is a color-octet scalar, that is applicable to any NP model provided the dominant production mechanism is gluon-gluon fusion. The factorized result for the inclusive cross section is similar to that for the Stan…
We analyze the first measurement of $η_c$ production, performed by the LHCb Collaboration, in the nonrelativistic-QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong-coupling constant $α_s$ and the relative velocity $v$ of the bound quarks including the feeddown from $h_c$ mesons. Converting the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) extracted by various groups from $J/ψ$ yield and polarization data to the $η_c$ case using heavy-quark spin symmetry, we find that the resulting NLO NRQCD predictions greatly overshoot the LHCb data, while the color-singlet model provid…
We investigate associated prompt photon and hadronic jet production at the LHC energies using the $k_T$-factorization approach. Our consideration is based on the $\mathcal O(αα_s^2)$ off-shell gluon-gluon fusion subprocess $g^*g^*\to γq\bar q$ and several subleading quark-initiated contributions from $\mathcal O(αα_s)$ and $\mathcal O(αα_s^2)$ subprocesses, taken into account in the conventional (collinear) QCD factorization. The transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton are derived from Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation. We achieve…
Jet broadening is an event-shape variable probing the transverse momenta of particles inside jets. It has been measured precisely in e+e- annihilations and is used to extract the strong coupling constant. The factorization of the associated cross section at small values of the broadening is afflicted by a collinear anomaly. Based on an analysis of this anomaly, we present the first all-order expressions for jet-broadening distributions, which are free of large perturbative logarithms in the two-jet limit. Our formulae reproduce known results at next-to-leading logarithmic order but also extend…
We compute the O(alpha_s^3) inclusive cross section for the process pp -> t-tbar-h in the Standard Model, at sqrt(s)=14 TeV. The next-to-leading order corrections drastically reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of the Born cross section and increase the total cross section for renormalization and factorization scales larger than m_t. These corrections have important implications for models of new physics involving the top quark.
We investigate the factorization and resummation of t-channel single top (antitop) quark production in the SM at both the Tevatron and the LHC in SCET. We find that the resummation effects decrease the NLO cross sections by about 3% at the Tevatron and about 2% at the LHC. And the resummation effects significantly reduce the factorization scale dependence of the total cross section. The transfer momentum cut dependence and other matching scale dependencies are also discussed. We also show that when our numerical results for s- and t-channel single top production at the Tevatron are combined, i…
We calculate cross section for production of $D$ mesons and $Λ_c$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section for production of $c \bar c$ pairs is calculated within $k_T$-factorization approach with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated gluon distributions obtained on the basis of modern collinear gluon distribution functions. We show that our approach well describes the $D^0$, $D^+$ and $D_s$ experimental data. We try to understand recent ALICE and LHCb data for $Λ_c$ production with the $c \to Λ_c$ independent parton fragmentation approach. The Peterson fragmentation f…
The present work is devoted to study the high-energy $QCD$ events, such as the di-jet productions from proton-proton inelastic collisions at the $LHC$ in the forward-center and the forward-forward configurations, using the $unintegrated$ parton distribution functions ($UPDF$) in the $k_t$-factorization framework. The $UPDF$ of $Kimber$ et. al. ($KMR$) and $Martin$ et.al. ($MRW$) are generated in the leading order ($LO$) and next-to-leading order ($NLO$), using the $Harland-Lang$ et al. ($MMHT2014$) $PDF$ libraries. While working in the forward-center and the forward-forward rapidity sectors, o…
We discuss diffractive production of heavy mesons at the LHC. The differential cross sections for single- and central-diffractive mechanisms for $c\bar c$ pair production are calculated in the framework of the Ingelman-Schlein model corrected for absorption effects. Here, leading-order gluon-gluon fusion and quark-antiquark anihilation partonic subprocesses are taken into consideration. Both pomeron flux factors as well as parton distributions in the pomeron are taken from the H1 Collaboration analysis of diffractive structure function and diffractive dijets at HERA. The extra corrections from…
We discuss the single diffractive production of $c \bar c$ pairs and charmed mesons at the LHC. For a first time we propose a $k_t$-factorization approach to the diffractive processes. The transverse momentum dependent diffractive parton distributions are obtained from standard (collinear) diffractive parton distributions used in the literature. In this calculation the transverse momentum of the pomeron is neglected with respect to transverse momentum of partons entering the hard process. We also perform the first evaluation of the cross sections at the LHC using the diffractive transverse mom…
The recently proposed hard-pion chiral perturbation theory predicts that the leading chiral logarithms factorize with respect to the energy dependence in the chiral limit. This claim has been successfully tested in the pion form factors up to two loops in chiral perturbation theory. In the present paper we explain this factorization property at two loops and even show that it is valid to all orders for a subclass of diagrams. We also demonstrate that factorization is violated starting at three loops.
We consider the dijet cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation using the Georgi jet algorithm, or the maximizing jet algorithm. The cross section is factorized into the hard, collinear and soft parts. Each factorized function is computed to next-to-leading order, and is shown to be infrared finite. The large logarithms are resummed at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. By analyzing the phase space for the jet algorithm, the Georgi algorithm turns out to be equivalent to the Sterman-Weinberg and the cone-type algorithms.
