The lack of convergence of the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power (NLP) factorization theorems prevents the applications of existing methods to resum power-suppressed large logarithmic corrections in collider physics. We consider thrust distribution in the two-jet region for the flavour-nonsinglet off-diagonal contribution, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair, which is power-suppressed. With the help of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we obtain a factorization formula, where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences in convolutions and can be expressed in terms of renormalized hard, soft and collinear functions in four dimensions. This allows us to perform the first resummation of the endpoint-divergent SCET$_{\rm I}$ observables at the leading logarithmic accuracy using exclusively renormalization-group methods. The presented approach relies on universal properties of the soft and collinear limits and may serve as a paradigm for the systematic NLP resummation for other $1\to 2$ and $2\to 1$ collider physics processes.
In this talk we report on the recent progresses on IR logarithms resummation for the Thrust distribution in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. Using renormalisation group (RG) evolution in Laplace space, the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections is performed to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. To combine the resummed expressions with the fixed-order results, we derive the log(R)-matching and R-matching of the NNLL approximation to the fixed-order NNLO distribution.
We calculate the resummed distributions for the thrust in DIS in the limit T->1. Two variants of the thrust are considered: that normalised to Q/2, and that normalised to the energy in the current hemisphere. The results expanded to second order are compared to predictions from the Monte Carlo programs DISENT and DISASTER++. A prescription is given for matching the resummed expressions with the full fixed order calculation.
The thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation is a classical precision QCD observable. Using renormalization group (RG) evolution in Laplace space, we perform the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in the dijet limit, $T\to 1$ to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We independently derive the two-loop soft function for the thrust distribution and extract an analytical expression for the NNLL resummation coefficient $g_3$. To combine the resummed expressions with the fixed-order results, we derive the $\log(R)$-matching and $R$-matching of the NNLL …
We analyze transverse thrust in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory and obtain a factorized expression for the cross section that permits resummation of terms enhanced in the dijet limit to arbitrary accuracy. The factorization theorem for this hadron-collider event-shape variable involves collinear emissions at different virtualities and suffers from a collinear anomaly. We compute all its ingredients at the one-loop order, and show that the two-loop input for next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy can be extracted numerically, from existing fixed-order codes.
Infrared power corrections for the average thrust < T > in e+e- annihilation are analyzed in the framework of renormalon resummation, motivated by analogy with the skeleton expansion in QED and the BLM approach. Performing the ``massive gluon'' renormalon integral a renormalization scheme invariant result is obtained. We find that a major part of the discrepancy between the known next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation and experiment can be explained by resummation of higher order perturbative terms. This fact does not preclude the infrared finite coupling interpretation with a substantial 1/Q…
We obtain a prediction for the hadron-collider event-shape variable transverse thrust in which the terms enhanced in the dijet limit are resummed to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Our method exploits universality properties made manifest in the factorized expression for the cross section and only requires one-loop calculations. The necessary two-loop ingredients are extracted using known results and existing numerical codes. Our technique is general and applicable to other observables as well.
Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renor…
Infrared power corrections for Minkowskian QCD observables are analyzed in the framework of renormalon resummation, motivated by analogy with the skeleton expansion in QED and the BLM approach. Performing the ``massive gluon'' renormalon integral a renormalization scheme invariant result is obtained. Various regularizations of the integral are studied. In particular, we compare the infrared cutoff regularization with the standard principal value Borel sum and show that they yield equivalent results once power terms are included. As an example the average thrust < T > in e+e- annihilation is an…

We parameterize the enhancement of threshold effects away from hadronic endpoint that arise due to the steeply falling nature of parton distribution functions, within the context of soft-collinear effective theory. This is accomplished in a process-independent way by directly linking the charac- teristic scale of soft and collinear radiation, λ, to the shape of the pdfs. This allows us quantify the power corrections to partonic threshold resummation as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the final state. In the context of SCET, being able to compute λin a process-independent manne…
When the allowed range of an observable grows order-by-order in perturbation theory, its perturbative expansion can have discontinuities (as in the $C$ parameter) or discontinuities in its derivatives (as in thrust or heavy jet mass) called Sudakov shoulders. We explore the origin of these logarithms using both perturbation theory and effective field theory. We show that for thrust and heavy jet mass, the logarithms arise from kinematic configurations with narrow jets and deduce the next-to-leading logarithmic series. The left-shoulder logarithms in heavy jet mass ($ρ$) of the form $r\ α_s^n \…
I give a pedagogical introduction to resummation and power corrections, using the thrust variable in electron-positron annihilation as an example, followed by an discussion of issues of predictability in perturbative QCD.
The heavy jet mass distribution in e+e- collisions is computed to next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNNLL) and next-to-next-to leading fixed order accuracy (NNLO). The singular terms predicted from the resummed distribution are confirmed by the fixed order distributions allowing a precise extraction of the unknown soft function coefficients. A number of quantitative and qualitative comparisons of heavy jet mass and the related thrust distribution are made. From fitting to ALEPH data, a value of alpha_s is extracted, alpha_s(m_Z)=0.1220 +/- 0.0031, which is larger than, but not in co…
We present the framework for obtaining precise predictions for the transverse momentum of hadrons with respect to the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ collisions. This will enable a precise extraction of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions from a recent measurement by the Belle Collaboration. Our analysis takes into account, for the first time, the nontrivial interplay between the hadron transverse momentum and the cut on the thrust event shape. To this end, we identify three different kinematic regions, derive the corresponding factorization theorems within Soft Collinear Effec…
The thrust distribution in e+e- annihilation is calculated exploiting its exponentiation property in the two-jet region t = 1-T << 1. We present a general method (DGE) to calculate a large class of logarithmically enhanced terms, using the dispersive approach in renormalon calculus. Dressed Gluon Exponentiation is based on the fact that the exponentiation kernel is associated primarily with a single gluon emission, and therefore the exponent is naturally represented as an integral over the running coupling. Fixing the definition of Lambda is enough to guarantee consistency with the exact expon…
We present preliminary results on the resummation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms for the thrust distribution in deep inelastic scattering. Our predictions, expanded to O(alpha_s^2), are compared to corresponding results from the Monte Carlo programs DISASTER++ and DISENT.
Resummed results are discussed for DIS event shape variable distributions involving the thrust defined using the thrust axis of the current hemisphere, the C parameter and the jet mass. The resummation of these variables requires the development of some techniques different to those applied before for the resummation of DIS event shapes. Including power corrections and matching a comparison with H1 data is presented.
We derive the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization and resummation formula of the unpolarized transverse momentum distribution ($j_T$) for the single hadron production with the thrust axis in electron-positron collision. Two different kinematic regions are considered, including small transverse momentum limit $j_T \ll Q$, and joint transverse momentum and threshold limit $j_T \ll Q(1-z_h) \ll Q$, where $Q$ and $z_h$ are the hard scattering energy and the observed hadron momentum fraction. Using effective theory methods, we resum logarithms $\ln(Q/j_T)$ and $\ln(1-z_h)$ to all orde…
An unresolved problem in J/psi phenomenology is a systematic understanding of the differential photoproduction cross section, dsigma/dz [gamma + p -> J/psi + X], where z= E_psi/E_gamma in the proton rest frame. In the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, fixed-order perturbative calculations of color-octet mechanisms suffer from large perturbative and nonperturbative corrections that grow rapidly in the endpoint region, z -> 1. In this paper, NRQCD and soft collinear effective theory are combined to resum these large corrections to the color-octet photoproduction cross section…
We discuss the procedure to resum large logarithms to all orders for DIS event shape variable distributions. Results are described for two variants of the thrust variable, both defined wrt the boson axis in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame, but with different normalisations.
Differential spectra in observables that resolve additional soft or collinear QCD emissions exhibit Sudakov double logarithms in the form of logarithmic plus distributions. Important examples are the total transverse momentum $q_T$ in color-singlet production, N-jettiness (with thrust or beam thrust as special cases), but also jet mass and more complicated jet substructure observables. The all-order logarithmic structure of such distributions is often fully encoded in differential equations, so-called (renormalization group) evolution equations. We introduce a well-defined technique of distrib…
For many observables, the most difficult part of a single logarithmic resummation is the analytical treatment of the observable's dependence on multiple emissions. We present a general numerical method, which allows the resummation specifically of these single logarithms. Some first applications and new results for the thrust major, the oblateness and the two-jet rate in the Durham algorithm are also presented.
Resummation and power-corrections play a crucial role in the phenomenology of event-shape variables like the thrust T. Previous investigations showed that the perturbative contribution to the average thrust is dominated by gluons of small invariant mass, of the order of 10% of Q, where Q is the center-of-mass energy. The effect of soft gluons is also important, leading to a non-perturbative 1/Q correction. These conclusions are based on renormalon analysis in the single dressed gluon (SDG) approximation. Here we analyze higher moments of the thrust distribution using a similar technique. We fi…
The resummation for the event-shape variable jet broadening is extended to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy by computing the relevant jet and soft functions at one-loop order and the collinear anomaly to two-loop accuracy. The anomaly coefficient is extracted from the soft function and expressed in terms of polylogarithmic as well as elliptic functions. With our results, the uncertainty on jet-broadening distributions is reduced significantly, which should allow for a precise determination of the strong coupling constant from the existing experimental data and provide a consistency…
Event-shape distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilation offer a unique lab oratory for understanding perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of QCD. Dressed Gluon Exponentiation is a resummation method designed to evaluate differ ential cross sections close to a kinematic threshold and provide the basis for parametrization of power corrections. The method and its application in the case of the thrust and the heavy jet mass distributions in the two-jet region are briefly presented.
Starting from the first renormalized factorization theorem for a process described at subleading power in soft-collinear effective theory, we discuss the resummation of Sudakov logarithms for such processes in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. Endpoint divergences in convolution integrals, which arise generically beyond leading power, are regularized and removed by systematically rearranging the factorization formula. We study in detail the example of the $b$-quark induced $h\toγγ$ decay of the Higgs boson, for which we resum large logarithms of the ratio $M_h/m_b$ at next-to…
We present predictions for the thrust distribution in hadronic decays of the Higgs boson at the next-to-leading order and the approximate next-to-next-to-leading order. The approximate NNLO corrections are derived from a factorization formula in the soft/collinear phase-space regions. We find large corrections, especially for the gluon channel. The scale variations at the lowest orders tend to underestimate the genuine higher order contributions. The results of this paper is therefore necessary to control the perturbative uncertainties of the theoretical predictions. We also discuss on possibl…
We show how the resummation of large logarithms can be incorporated into the method of effective charges. As an example, we apply this approach to the event shape variables thrust and heavy jet mass in e+e- annihilation. We find that, although the resummation creates problems with the behaviour of the efective charge in the 2-jet limit, smaller power corrections are required to fit the data compared to the standard approach. In addition, increasing the logarithmic accuracy reduces the size of the power corrections further. We also consider ``predicting'' the sub-leading logarithms in the MSbar…
We present a novel method for resummation of event shapes to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We discuss the technique and describe its implementation in a numerical program in the case of e^+e^- collisions where the resummed prediction is matched to NNLO. We reproduce all the existing predictions and present new results for oblateness and thrust major.
Explicit applications of factorization theorems for processes at hadron colliders near the hadronic endpoint have largely focused on simple final states with either no jets (e.g., Drell-Yan) or one inclusive jet (e.g., deep inelastic scattering and prompt photon production). Factorization for the former type of process gives rise to a soft function that depends on timelike momenta, whereas the soft function for the latter type depends on null momenta. We derive in soft-collinear effective theory a factorization theorem that allows for an arbitrary number of jets, where the jets are defined wit…
Starting from a factorization theorem in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, the thrust distribution in e+e- collisions is calculated including resummation of the next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithms. This is a significant improvement over previous calculations which were only valid to next-to-leading logarithmic order. The fixed-order expansion of the resummed result approaches the exact fixed-order distribution towards the kinematic endpoint. This close agreement provides a verification of both the effective field theory expression and recently completed next-to-next-to-leading fixed orde…
We present a factorization framework that takes into account the production of heavy quarks through gluon splitting in the thrust distribution for e+ e- --> hadrons. The explicit factorization theorems and some numerical results are displayed in the dijet region where the kinematic scales are widely separated, which can be extended systematically to the whole spectrum. We account for the necessary two-loop matrix elements, threshold corrections, and include resummation up to N3LL order. We include nonperturbative power corrections through a field theoretical shape function, and remove the O(La…
We present results for the Higgsstrahlung process within the GENEVA Monte Carlo framework. We combine the fully differential NNLO calculation with the higher-order resummation in the 0-jettiness resolution variable (beam-thrust). The resulting parton-level events are further showered and hadronised by Pythia8. The beam-thrust resummation is carried out to NNLL$'$ accuracy, which consistently incorporates all singular virtual and real NNLO corrections. It thus provides a natural perturbative connection between the NNLO calculation and the parton shower regime, including a systematic assessment …
When high-energy single-hadron production takes place inside an identified jet, there are important correlations between the fragmentation and phase-space cuts. For example, when one-hadron yields are measured in on-resonance B-factory data, a cut on the thrust event shape T is required to remove the large b-quark contribution. This leads to a dijet final state restriction for the light-quark fragmentation process. Here we complete our analysis of unpolarized fragmentation of (light) quarks and gluons to a light hadron h with energy fraction z in e+ e- -> dijet + h at the center-of-mass energy…
From soft-collinear effective theory one can derive a factorization formula for the e+e- thrust distribution dsigma/dtau with tau = 1-T that is applicable for all tau. The formula accommodates available O(alpha_s^3) fixed-order QCD results, resummation of logarithms at NNNLL order, a universal nonperturbative soft function for hadronization effects, factorization of nonperturbative effects in subleading power contributions, bottom mass effects and QED corrections. We emphasize that the use of Monte Carlos to estimate hadronization effects is not compatible with high-precision, high-order analy…
Hadronic event shapes, that is, event shapes at hadron colliders, could provide a great way to test both standard and non-standard theoretical models. However, they are significantly more complicated than event shapes at e+e- colliders, involving multiple hard directions, multiple channels and multiple color structures. In this paper, hadronic event shapes are examined with Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) by expanding around the dijet limit. A simple event shape, threshold thrust, is defined. This observable is global and has no free parameters, making it ideal for clarifying how resumm…
For the minimal wino and Higgsino benchmark models we provide accurate energy spectra of high-energy photons from TeV scale dark-matter annihilation $χχ\to γ+X$ by merging electroweak Sudakov resummation near maximal energy with the electroweak parton-shower PPPC4DM, and accounting for the Sommerfeld effect. Electroweak resummation significantly changes the shape of the photon-energy spectrum in the wide range $E_γ\sim (0.6\ldots 1)\, m_χ$ and hence the form of the so-called "line-signal".
We discuss recent progress concerning the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-leading power (NLP) in scattering processes near threshold. We begin by briefly reviewing the diagrammatic and SCET approach, which are used to derive factorization theorems for physical observables in this kinematic limit. Then, we focus on the quark-gluon channel in deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan. We show that the use of consistency conditions for the cancellation of leading poles in the hadronic cross section can be used to achieve the resummation of large leading logarithms (LLs) at NLP, both with…
We consider top-quarks produced at large energy in e+e- collisions, and address the question of what top-mass can be measured from reconstruction. The production process is characterized by well separated scales: the center-of-mass energy, Q, the top mass, m, the top decay width, Gamma_t, and also LambdaQCD; scales which can be disentangled with effective theory methods. In particular we show how the mass measurement depends on the way in which soft radiation is treated, and that this can shift the mass peak by an amount of order Q LambdaQCD/m. We sum large logs for Q >> m >> Gamma_t > LambdaQ…
We test the utility of the nPI formalism for solving nonperturbative dynamics of gauge theories by applying it to study the phase diagram of SU(N) Higgs theory in 3 Euclidean spacetime dimensions. Solutions reveal standard signatures of a first order phase transition with a critical endpoint leading to a crossover regime, in qualitative agreement with lattice studies. The location of the critical endpoint, x sim 0.14 for SU(2) with a fundamental Higgs, is in rough but not tight quantitative agreement with the lattice. We end by commenting on the overall effectiveness and limitations of an nPI …
We consider cumulant moments (cumulants) of the thrust distribution using predictions of the full spectrum for thrust including O(alpha_s^3) fixed order results, resummation of singular N^3LL logarithmic contributions, and a class of leading power corrections in a renormalon-free scheme. From a global fit to the first thrust moment we extract the strong coupling and the leading power correction matrix element Omega_1. We obtain alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1141 \pm (0.0004)_exp \pm (0.0014)_hadr \pm (0.0007)_pert, where the 1-sigma uncertainties are experimental, from hadronization (related to Omega_1) an…
We argue that energetic muon-electron scattering in the backward direction can be viewed as a template case to study the resummation of large logarithms related to endpoint divergences appearing in the effective-theory formulation of hard-exclusive processes. While it is known since the mid sixties that the leading double logarithms from QED corrections resum to a modified Bessel function on the amplitude level, the modern formulation in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) shows a surprisingly complicated and iterative pattern of endpoint-divergent convolution integrals. In contrast to the …
The inclusive spectra of radiative and semi-leptonic B-meson decays near the endpoint is computed taking into account renormalons in the Sudakov exponent (Dressed Gluon Exponentiation). In this framework we demonstrate the factorization of decay spectra into hard, jet and soft functions and discuss the universality of the latter two. Going beyond perturbation theory the soft function, which we identify as the longitudinal momentum distribution in an on-shell b quark, is replaced by the b-quark distribution in the B meson. The two differ by power corrections. We show how the resummation of runn…
Exclusive differential spectra in color-singlet processes at hadron colliders are benchmark observables that have been studied to high precision in theory and experiment. We present an effective-theory framework utilizing soft-collinear effective theory to incorporate massive (bottom) quark effects into resummed differential distributions, accounting for both heavy-quark initiated primary contributions to the hard scattering process as well as secondary effects from gluons splitting into heavy-quark pairs. To be specific, we focus on the Drell-Yan process and consider the vector-boson transver…
Resummation of hadron collision cross sections, when the measurement imposes a hierarchy of scales, relies on factorization. Cancellation of Glauber / Coulomb gluons is a necessary condition for factorization. For Drell-Yan-like processes, the known proofs of cancellation of Glauber gluons are not applicable when jet vetoes are introduced, via jet algorithms or event shape variables such as the beam thrust. A priori, this does not rule out the possibility that an unknown new cancellation mechanism exists, or the possibility that a generalized factorization formalism is correct. To resolve the …
I discuss soft-gluon resummation and power corrections for event shape distributions, mostly in e+ e- annihilation. I consider specifically the thrust, the C parameter, and the class of angularities, and show how factorization techniques and dressed gluon exponentiation lead to predictive models of power corrections that are firmly grounded in perturbative QCD. The scaling rule for the shape function for angularities is derived as an example. Finally, I make a few remarks on possible generalizations to hadron collisions, and on their relevance to LHC studies.
We make progress towards resummation of power-suppressed logarithms in dijet event shapes such as thrust, which have the potential to improve high-precision fits for the value of the strong coupling constant. Using a newly developed formalism for Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we identify and compute the anomalous dimensions of all the operators that contribute to event shapes at order $1/Q^2$. These anomalous dimensions are necessary to resum power-suppressed logarithms in dijet event shape distributions, although an additional matching step and running of observable-dependent soft f…
We derive and analytically solve renormalization group (RG) equations of gauge invariant non-local Wilson line operators which resum logarithms for event shape observables $τ$ at subleading power in the $τ\ll 1$ expansion. These equations involve a class of universal jet and soft functions arising through operator mixing, which we call $θ$-jet and $θ$-soft functions. An illustrative example involving these operators is introduced which captures the generic features of subleading power resummation, allowing us to derive the structure of the RG to all orders in $α_s$, and provide field theory de…
We extend the lowest-order matching of tree-level matrix elements with parton showers to give a complete description at the next higher perturbative accuracy in alpha_s at both small and large jet resolutions, which has not been achieved so far. This requires the combination of the higher-order resummation of large Sudakov logarithms at small values of the jet resolution variable with the full next-to-leading order (NLO) matrix-element corrections at large values. As a by-product this combination naturally leads to a smooth connection of the NLO calculations for different jet multiplicities. I…
Angularity is a class of event-shape observables that can be measured in deep-inelastic scattering. With its continuous parameter $a$ one can interpolate angularity between thrust and broadening and further access beyond the region. Providing such systematic way to access various observables makes angularity attractive in analysis with event shapes. We give the definition of angularity for DIS and factorize the cross-section by using soft-collinear effective theory. The factorization is valid in a wide range of $a$ below and above thrust region but invalid in broadening limit. It contains an a…
We present a procedure to calculate the Sudakov radiator for a generic recursive infrared and collinear (rIRC) safe observable in two-scale problems. We give closed formulae for the radiator at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, which completes the general NNLL resummation for this class of observables in the {\tt ARES} method for processes with two emitters at the Born level. As a byproduct, we define a physical coupling in the soft limit, and we provide an explicit expression for its relation to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ coupling up to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$. This physical couplin…
