We investigate the transverse field Ising model subject to a two-step periodic driving protocol and quasiperiodic modulation of the Ising couplings. Analytical results on the phase boundaries associated with Majorana edge modes and numerical results on the localization of single-particle excitations are presented. The implication of a region with fully localized domain-wall-like excitations in the parameter space is eigenstate order and exact spectral pairing of Floquet eigenstates, based on which we conclude the existence of time crystals. We also examine various correlation functions of the time crystal phase numerically, in support of its existence.
We study a class of off-diagonal quasiperiodic hopping models described by one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with quasiperiodic modulations. We unveil a general dual-mapping relation in parameter space of the dimerization strength $λ$ and the quasiperiodic modulation strength $V$, regardless of the specific details of the quasiperiodic modulation. Moreover, we demonstrated semi-analytically and numerically that under the specific quasiperiodic modulation, quantum criticality can emerge and persist in a wide parameter space. These unusual properties provides a distinctive paradigm comp…
We investigate zero-field Ising models on periodic approximants of planar quasiperiodic tilings by means of partition function zeros and high-temperature expansions. These are obtained by employing a determinant expression for the partition function. The partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane yield precise estimates of the critical temperature of the quasiperiodic model. Concerning the critical behaviour, our results are compatible with Onsager universality, in agreement with the Harris-Luck criterion based on scaling arguments.
Quasiperiodic modulation can prevent isolated quantum systems from equilibrating by localizing their degrees of freedom. In this article, we show that such systems can exhibit dynamically stable long-range orders forbidden in equilibrium. Specifically, we show that the interplay of symmetry breaking and localization in the quasiperiodic quantum Ising chain produces a \emph{quasiperiodic Ising glass} stable at all energy densities. The glass order parameter vanishes with an essential singularity at the melting transition with no signatures in the equilibrium properties. The zero temperature pha…
We consider high-temperature expansions for the free energy of zero-field Ising models on planar quasiperiodic graphs. For the Penrose and the octagonal Ammann-Beenker tiling, we compute the expansion coefficients up to 18th order. As a by-product, we obtain exact vertex-averaged numbers of self-avoiding polygons on these quasiperiodic graphs. In addition, we analyze periodic approximants by computing the partition function via the Kac-Ward determinant. For the critical properties, we find complete agreement with the commonly accepted conjecture that the models under consideration belong to th…
The low energy behavior of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with precious mean quasiperiodic exchange modulation is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. Based on the scaling behavior of the energy gap distribution, it is found that the ground state of this model belongs to the universality class different from that of the XY chain for which the precious mean exchange modulation is marginal. This result is consistent with the recent bosonization analysis of Vidal et al.

We uncover the relationship of topology and disorder in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subjected to a slowly varying quasi-periodic modulation. By numerically calculating the disorder-averaged winding number and analytically studying the localization length of the zero modes, we obtain the topological phase diagram, which implies that the topological Anderson insulator (TAI) can be induced by a slowly varying quasi-periodic modulation. Moreover, unlike the localization properties in the TAI phase caused by random disorder, mobility edges can enter into the TAI region identified b…
We study a one-dimensional system that includes both a commensurate off-diagonal modulation of the hopping amplitude and an incommensurate, slowly varying diagonal on-site modulation. By using asymptotic heuristic arguments, we identify four closed form expressions for the mobility edges. We further study numerically the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. The numerical results are in exact agreement with our theoretical predictions. Besides a metal-insulator transition driven by the strength of the slowly varying potential, another four insulator-meta…
The low energy behavior of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XY-like XXZ chains with precious mean quasiperiodic exchange modulation is studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is found that the energy gap of the chain with length N scales as $\exp (-cN^ω)$ with nonuniversal exponent $ω$ if the Ising component of the exhange coupling is antiferromagnetic. This behavior is expected to be the characteristic feature of the quantum spin chains with relevant aperiodicity. This is in contrast to the XY chain for which the precious mean exchange modulation is marginal and the gap scal…
Quasiperiodic systems are aperiodic but deterministic, so their critical behavior differs from that of clean systems as well as disordered ones. Quasiperiodic criticality was previously understood only in the special limit where the couplings follow discrete quasiperiodic sequences. Here we consider generic quasiperiodic modulations; we find, remarkably, that for a wide class of spin chains, generic quasiperiodic modulations flow to discrete sequences under a real-space renormalization group transformation. These discrete sequences are therefore fixed points of a \emph{functional} renormalizat…
We study energy spectra, eigenstates and quantum diffusion for one- and two-dimensional quasiperiodic tight-binding models. As our one-dimensional model system we choose the silver mean or `octonacci' chain. The two-dimensional labyrinth tiling, which is related to the octagonal tiling, is derived from a product of two octonacci chains. This makes it possible to treat rather large systems numerically. For the octonacci chain, one finds singular continuous energy spectra and critical eigenstates which is the typical behaviour for one-dimensional Schr"odinger operators based on substitution sequ…
We introduce a one-dimensional lattice model whose hopping amplitudes are modulated for equally spaced sites. Such mosaic lattice exhibits many interesting topological and localization phenomena that do not exist in the regular off-diagonal lattices. When the mosaic modulation is commensurate with the underlying lattice, topologically nontrivial phases with zero- and nonzero-energy edge modes are observed as we tune the modulation, where the nontrivial regimes are characterized by quantized Berry phases. If the mosaic lattice becomes incommensurate, Anderson localization will be induced purely…

The nature of the many-body localization (MBL) transition and even the existence of the MBL phase in random many-body quantum systems have been actively debated in recent years. In spatial dimension $d>1$, there is some consensus that the MBL phase is unstable to rare thermal inclusions that can lead to an avalanche that thermalizes the whole system. In this note, we explore the possibility of MBL in quasiperiodic systems in dimension $d>1$. We argue that (i) the MBL phase is stable at strong enough quasiperiodic modulations for $d = 2$, and (ii) the possibility of an avalanche strongly constr…
We consider a zero-field Ising model defined on a quasiperiodic graph, the so-called Labyrinth tiling. Exact information about the critical behaviour is obtained from duality arguments and the subclass of models which yield commuting transfer matrices. For the latter, the magnetization is independent of the position and the phase transition between ordered and disordered phase belongs to the Onsager universality class. In order to obtain information about the generic case, we calculate the magnetization for a series of couplings by standard Monte-Carlo methods.
We study the many body localization (MBL) transition for interacting fermions subject to quasiperiodic potentials by constructing the local integrals of motion (LIOMs) in the MBL phase as time-averaged local operators. We study numerically how these time-averaged operators evolve across the MBL transition. We find that the norm of such time-averaged operators drops discontinuously to zero across the transition; as we discuss, this implies that LIOMs abruptly become unstable at some critical localization length of order unity. We analyze the LIOMs using hydrodynamic projections and isolating th…
We investigate the localization and topological transitions in a one-dimensional (interacting) non-Hermitian quasiperiodic lattice, which is described by a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model with irrational modulations in the off-diagonal hopping and on-site potential and with non-Hermiticities from the nonreciprocal hopping and complex potential phase. For noninteracting cases, we reveal that the nonreciprocal hopping (the complex potential phase) can enlarge the delocalization (localization) region in the phase diagrams spanned by two quasiperiodical modulation strengths. We show that the …
Quantum and classical physics can be used for mathematical computations that are hard to tackle by conventional electronics. Very recently, optical Ising machines have been demonstrated for computing the minima of spin Hamiltonians, paving the way to new ultra-fast hardware for machine learning. However, the proposed systems are either tricky to scale or involve a limited number of spins. We design and experimentally demonstrate a large-scale optical Ising machine based on a simple setup with a spatial light modulator. By encoding the spin variables in a binary phase modulation of the field, w…
In this paper we explore the effects of quasiperiodicity in paradigmatic models of Chern insulators. We identify a plethora of topological phase transitions and characterize them based on spectral and localization properties. Contrary to uncorrelated disorder, gap closing and reopening topological transitions can be induced by quasiperiodicity. These can separate widely different phases, including (i) trivial and Chern insulators, both with ballistic states near the gap edges; (ii) Chern insulators with critical states around the gap edges or (iii) Chern and trivial insulators respectively wit…
We construct and solve a two-dimensional, chirally symmetric model of Dirac cones subjected to a quasiperiodic modulation. In real space, this is realized with a quasiperiodic hopping term. This hopping model, as we show, at the Dirac node energy has a rich phase diagram with a semimetal-to-metal phase transition at intermediate amplitude of the quasiperiodic modulation, and a transition to a phase with a diverging density of states and sub-diffusive transport when the quasiperiodic hopping is strongest. We further demonstrate that the semimetal-to-metal phase transition can be characterized b…
We investigate the topology and localization of one-dimensional Hermitian and non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains with quasiperiodic hopping modulations. In the Hermitian case, phase diagrams are obtained by numerically and analytically calculating various topological and localization characters. We show the presence of topological extended, intermediate, and localized phases due to the coexistence of independent topological and localization phase transitions driven by the quasiperiodic disorder. Unlike the gapless and localized TAI phase in one-dimensional random disordered systems, we …

We investigate the localization properties of a spin chain with an antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour coupling, subject to an external quasiperiodic on-site magnetic field. The quasiperiodic modulation interpolates between two paradigmatic models, namely the Aubry-André and the Fibonacci models. We find that stronger many-body interactions extend the ergodic phase in the former, whereas they shrink it in the latter. Furthermore, the many-body localization transition points at the two limits of the interpolation appear to be continuously connected along the deformation. As a result, the positi…
Unlike random potentials, quasi-periodic modulation can induce localisation-delocalisation transitions in one dimension. In this article, we analyse the implications of this for symmetry breaking in the quasi-periodically modulated quantum Ising chain. Although weak modulation is irrelevant, strong modulation induces new ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases which are fully localised and gapless. The quasi-periodic potential and localised excitations lead to quantum criticality that is intermediate to that of the clean and randomly disordered models with exponents of $ν=1^{+}$, and $z\approx 1…
We present an analytical method, based on a real space decimation scheme, to extract the exact eigenvalues of a macroscopically large set of pinned localized excitations in a Cayley tree fractal network. Within a tight binding scheme we exploit the above method to scrutinize the effect of a deterministic deformation of the network, first through a hierarchical distribution in the values of the nearest neighbor hopping integrals, and then through a radial Aubry Andre Harper quasiperiodic modulation. With increasing generation index, the inflating loop less tree structure hosts pinned eigenstate…
In this paper we consider one-dimensional classical and quantum spin-1=2 quasiperiodic Ising chains, with two-valued nearest neighbor interaction modulated by a Fibonacci substitution sequence on two letters. In the quantum case, we investigate the energy spectrum of the Ising Hamiltonian, in presence of constant transverse magnetic field, by employing the techniques that were developed in our previous work. In the classical case, we investigate and prove analyticity of the free energy function when the magnetic field, together with interaction strength couplings, is modulated by the same Fibo…
The interplay of correlated spatial modulation and symmetry breaking leads to quantum critical phenomena intermediate between those of the clean and randomly disordered cases. By performing a detailed analytic and numerical case study of the quasi-periodically (QP) modulated transverse field Ising chain, we provide evidence for the conjectures of Ref. [Crowley et. al. 2018] regarding the QP-Ising universality class. In the generic case, we confirm that the logarithmic wandering coefficient $w$ governs both the macroscopic critical exponents and the energy-dependent localisation length of the c…
