We uncover the relationship of topology and disorder in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subjected to a slowly varying quasi-periodic modulation. By numerically calculating the disorder-averaged winding number and analytically studying the localization length of the zero modes, we obtain the topological phase diagram, which implies that the topological Anderson insulator (TAI) can be induced by a slowly varying quasi-periodic modulation. Moreover, unlike the localization properties in the TAI phase caused by random disorder, mobility edges can enter into the TAI region identified by the fractal dimension, the inverse participation ratio, and the spatial distributions of the wave functions, the boundaries of which coincide with our analytical results.
Uncorrelated disorder potential in one-dimensional lattice definitely induces Anderson localization, while quasiperiodic potential can lead to both localized and extended phases, depending on the potential strength. We investigate the Anderson localization in one-dimensional lattice with nonHermitian complex disorder and quasiperiodic potential. We present a non-Hermitian SSH chain to demonstrate that a nonzero imaginary disorder on-site potential can induce the standard Anderson localization. We also show that the non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre (AA) model exhibits a transition in parameter space, …
We consider a quantum particle in a one-dimensional disordered lattice with Anderson localization, in the presence of multi-frequency perturbations of the onsite energies. Using the Floquet representation, we transform the eigenvalue problem into a Wannier-Stark basis. Each frequency component contributes either to a single channel or a multi-channel connectivity along the lattice, depending on the control parameters. The single channel regime is essentially equivalent to the undriven case. The multi-channel driving substantially increases the localization length for slow driving, showing two …
Quasiperiodic system is an intermediate state between periodic and disordered systems with unique delocalization-localization transition driven by the quasiperiodic potential (QP). One of the intriguing questions is whether the universality class of the Anderson transition (AT) driven by QP is similar to that of the AT driven by the random potential in the same symmetry class. Here, we study the critical behavior of the ATs driven by QP in the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson model, Peierls phase model, and Ando model, which belong to the Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. The localization length a…
We report a numerical analysis of the Anderson transition in a quantum-chaotic system, the quasiperiodic kicked rotor with three incommensurate frequencies. It is shown that this dynamical system exhibits the same critical phenomena as the truly random 3D-Anderson model. By taking proper account of systematic corrections to one-parameter scaling, the universality of the critical exponent is demonstrated. Our result $ν= 1.59 \pm 0.01$ is in perfect agreement with the value found for the Anderson model.
We study the dynamics of Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor. In the weakly interacting regime, the condensate is stable and both the condensate and the excitations undergo a phase transition from a quasilocalized to a diffusive regime. The corresponding critical exponents are identical for the condensate and the excitations, and compare very well with the value $ν\approx1.6$ for non-interacting particles.
Time-periodic (Floquet) drive can give rise to novel symmetry breaking and topological phases of matter. Recently, we showed that a quintessential Floquet topological phase known as the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator is stable to noise on the timing of its Floquet drive. Here, we perturb the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator at a single incommensurate frequency, resulting in a quasiperiodic 2-tone drive. Our numerics indicate that a robust topological phase survives at weak noise with topological pumping that is more stable than the case of white noise. Within the topological phase, w…
We calculate the spectral level-level correlation function of Anderson insulating wires for all three Wigner-Dyson classes. A measurement of its Fourier transform, the spectral form factor, is within reach of state-of-the-art cold atom quantum quench experiments, and we find good agreement with recent numerical simulations of the latter. Our derivation builds on a representation of the level-level correlation function in terms of a local generating function which may prove useful in other contexts.
We present results on the Anderson localization in a quasi one-dimensional metallic wire in the presence of magnetic impurities. We focus within the same numerical analysis on both the universal localized and metallic regimes, and we study the evolution of these universal properties as the strength of the magnetic disorder is varied. For this purpose, we use a numerical Landauer approach, and derive the scattering matrix of the wire from electron's Green's function obtained from a recursive algorithm.
We investigate the topology and localization of one-dimensional Hermitian and non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains with quasiperiodic hopping modulations. In the Hermitian case, phase diagrams are obtained by numerically and analytically calculating various topological and localization characters. We show the presence of topological extended, intermediate, and localized phases due to the coexistence of independent topological and localization phase transitions driven by the quasiperiodic disorder. Unlike the gapless and localized TAI phase in one-dimensional random disordered systems, we …
We introduce a one-dimensional lattice model whose hopping amplitudes are modulated for equally spaced sites. Such mosaic lattice exhibits many interesting topological and localization phenomena that do not exist in the regular off-diagonal lattices. When the mosaic modulation is commensurate with the underlying lattice, topologically nontrivial phases with zero- and nonzero-energy edge modes are observed as we tune the modulation, where the nontrivial regimes are characterized by quantized Berry phases. If the mosaic lattice becomes incommensurate, Anderson localization will be induced purely…
A generalization of the Aubry-Andre model in two and three dimensions is introduced which allows for quasiperiodic hopping terms in addition to the quasiperiodic site potentials. This corresponds to an array of interstitial impurities within the periodic host crystal. The resulting model is exactly solvable and I compute the density of states and the ac-conductivity. There is no mobility edge as in completely disordered systems but the regular ac-conductivity and the strongly reduced Drude weight indicate a precursor of the Anderson transition as the Fermi energy goes from the center to the ba…
We consider critical eigenstates in a two dimensional quasicrystal and their evolution as a function of disorder. By exact diagonalization of finite size systems we show that the evolution of properties of a typical wave-function is non-monotonic. That is, disorder leads to states delocalizing, until a certain crossover disorder strength is attained, after which they start to localize. Although this non-monotonic behavior is only present in finite-size systems and vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, the crossover disorder strength decreases logarithmically slowly with system size, and is quit…
Effects of electron correlations on Anderson insulators have been one of the central themes for recent two decades, suggesting that the Anderson insulating phase turns into a novel insulating state referred to as many body localization (MBL). However, the role of spin degrees of freedom in this dynamical phase transition still remains unclarified as a function of the interaction strength. In this study, we perform real-space spin-resolved Hartree-Fock-Anderson simulations to investigate metal-insulator transitions above a critical disorder strength in three spatial dimensions, where all single…
We investigate localization and topological properties of a dimerized Kitaev chain with p-wave superconducting correlations and a quasiperiodically modulated chemical potential. With regard to the localization studies, we demonstrate the existence of distinct phases, such as, the extended phase, the critical (intermediate) phase, and the localized phase that arise due to the competition between the dimerization and the onsite quasiperiodic potential. Most interestingly, the critical phase comprises of two different mobility edges that are found to exist between the extended to the localized ph…

We explore single-particle Anderson localization due to nonrandom quasiperiodic potentials in two and three dimensions. We introduce a class of self-dual models that generalize the one-dimensional Aubry-André model to higher dimensions. In three dimensions (3D) we find that the Anderson localization transitions appear to be in the same universality class as for random potentials. In scaling or renormalization group terms, this means that randomness of the potential is irrelevant at the Anderson localization transitions in 3D. In two dimensions (2D) we also explore the Ando model, which is in t…

We study many-body localization (MBL) for interacting one-dimensional lattice fermions in random (Anderson) and quasiperiodic (Aubry-Andre) models, focusing on the role of interaction range. We obtain the MBL quantum phase diagrams by calculating the experimentally relevant inverse participation ratio (IPR) at half-filling using exact diagonalization methods and extrapolating to the infinite system size. For short-range interactions, our results produce in the phase diagram a qualitative symmetry between weak and strong interaction limits. For long-range interactions, no such symmetry exists a…

We carry out a systematical study of the size scaling of Liouvillian gap in boundary-dissipated one-dimensional quasiperiodic and disorder systems. By treating the boundary-dissipation operators as a perturbation, we derive an analytical expression of the Liouvillian gap, which indicates clearly the Liouvillian gap being proportional to the minimum of boundary densities of eigenstates of the underlying Hamiltonian, and thus give a theoretical explanation why the Liouvillian gap has different size scaling relation in the extended and localized phase. While the Liouvillian gap displays a power-l…
We numerically study a one dimensional quasiperiodic system obtained from two dimensional electrons on the triangular lattice in a uniform magnetic field aided by the multifractal method. The phase diagram consists of three phases: two metallic phases and one insulating phase separated by critical lines with one bicritical point. Novel transitions between the two metallic phases exist. We examine the spectra and the wavefunctions along the critical lines. Several types of level statistics are obtained. Distributions of the band widths $P_B(w)$ near the origin (in the tail) %around the origin (…
We study a one-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor subject to non-Hermitian quasiperiodic potentials. Although the existence of the non-Hermiticity, the Majorana zero mode is still robust against the disorder perturbation. The analytic topological phase boundary is verified by calculating the energy gap closing point and the topological invariant. Furthermore, we investigate the localized properties of this model, revealing that the topological phase transition is accompanied with the Anderson localization phase transition, and a wide critical phase emerges with amplitude increments of the non…
Dimension 2 is expected to be the lower critical dimension for Anderson localization in a time reversal-invariant disordered quantum system. Using an atomic quasiperiodic kicked rotor -- equivalent to a two-dimensional Anderson-like model -- we experimentally study Anderson localization in dimension 2 and we observe localized wavefunction dynamics. We also show that the localization length depends exponentially on the disorder strength and anisotropy and is in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the self-consistent theory for the 2D Anderson localization.

The parametric motion of energy levels for non-interacting electrons at the Anderson localization critical point is studied by computing the energy level-curvatures for a quasiperiodic ring with twisted boundary conditions. We find a critical distribution which has the universal random matrix theory form ${\bar P}(K)\sim |K|^{-3}$ for large level-curvatures $|K|$ corresponding to quantum diffusion, although overall it is close to approximate log-normal statistics corresponding to localization. The obtained hybrid distribution resembles the critical distribution of the disordered Anderson model…
Static disorder in a noninteracting gas of electrons confined to two dimensions can drive a continuous quantum (Anderson) transition between a metallic and an insulating state when time-reversal symmetry is preserved but spin-rotation symmetry is broken. The critical exponent $ν$ that characterizes the diverging localization length and the bulk multifractal scaling exponents that characterize the amplitudes of the critical wave functions at the metal-insulator transition do not depend on the topological nature of the insulating state, i.e., whether it is topologically trivial (ordinary insulat…
We obtain an analytic expression for the full distribution of conductance for a strongly disordered three dimensional conductor within a perturbative approach based on the transfer-matrix formulation. Our results confirm numerical evidence that the log-normal limit of the distribution is not reached even in the deeply insulating regime. We show that the variance of the logarithm of the conductance scales as a fractional power of the mean, while the skewness changes sign as one approaches the Anderson metal-insulator transition from the deeply insulating limit, all described as a function of a …
We study the effect of disorder on the semimetal -- Mott insulator transition in the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, a system that features vanishing density of states at the Fermi level. Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we characterize various phases in terms of the bulk-limit antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter, compressibility, and temperature-dependent DC conductivity. In the clean limit, our data are consistent with previous results showing a single quantum critical point separating the semi-metallic and AF Mott insulating phases. With the p…
We discuss and compare two recently proposed toy models for anomalous transport and Griffiths effects in random systems near the Many-Body Localization transitions: the random dephasing model, which adds thermal inclusions in an Anderson Insulator as local Markovian dephasing channels that heat up the system, and the random Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) approach which models them in terms of ensembles of random regular graphs. For these two settings we discuss and compare transport and dissipative properties and their statistics. We show that both types of dissipation lead to similar Grif…
We study a non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper model with both nonreciprocal hoppings and complex quasiperiodical potentials, which is a typical non-Hermitian quasicrystal. We introduce boundary-dependent self-dualities in this model and obtain analytical results to describe its Asymmetrical Anderson localization and topological phase transitions. We find that the Anderson localization is not necessarily in accordance with the topological phase transitions, which are characteristics of localization of states and topology of energy spectrum respectively. Furthermore, in the localized phase, single…
We introduce the one-dimensional quasireciprocal lattices where the forward hopping amplitudes between nearest neighboring sites $\{ t+t_{jR} \}$ are chosen to be a random permutation of the backward hopping $\{ t+t_{jL} \}$ or vice versa. The values of $\{ t_{jL} \}$ (or $\{t_{jR} \}$) can be periodic, quasiperiodic, or randomly distributed. We show that the Hamiltonian matrices are pseudo-Hermitian and the energy spectra are real as long as $\{ t_{jL} \}$ (or $\{t_{jR} \}$) are smaller than the threshold value. While the non-Hermitian skin effect is always absent in the eigenstates due to th…
Disorder or sufficiently strong interactions can render a metallic state unstable causing it to turn into an insulating one. Despite the fact that the interplay of these two routes to a vanishing conductivity has been a central research topic, a unifying picture has not emerged so far. Here, we establish that the two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model, one of the simplest lattice models of strong electron correlation does allow for the study of this interplay. In particular, we show that this model at particle-hole symmetry possesses three distinct thermodynamic insulating phases and exhibits A…
We study non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper models with p-wave pairing, where the non-Hermiticity is introduced by on-site complex quasiperiodic potentials. By analysing the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking, winding numbers of energy spectra, localization and fractal dimensions of states, and fate of Majorana fermions, a complete phase diagram on Anderson localization and topological phase transitions is obtained. In particular, the non-Hermitian topological nature of Anderson localization phase transitions from extended to critical and then to localized phases is identified, using both analytic…

We study the localization transitions for coupled one-dimensional lattices with quasiperiodic potential. Besides the localized and extended phases there is an intermediate mixed phase which can be easily explained decoupling the system so as to deal with effective uncoupled Aubry-André chains with different transition points. We clarify, therefore, the origin of such an intermediate phase finding the conditions for getting a uniquely defined mobility edge for such coupled systems. Finally we consider many coupled chains with an energy shift which compose an extension of the Aubry-André model i…
We study the disordered topological Anderson insulator in a 2-D (square not strip) geometry. We first report the phase diagram of finite systems and then study the evolution of phase boundaries when the system size is increased to a very large $1120 \times 1120$ area. We establish that conductance quantization can occur without a bulk band gap, and that there are two distinct scaling regions with quantized conductance: TAI-I with a bulk band gap, and TAI-II with localized bulk states. We show that there is no intervening insulating phase between the bulk conduction phase and the TAI-I and TAI-…
