In three-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence forced at large length scales, a constant energy flux $ Π_u $ flows from large scales to intermediate scales, and then to small scales. It is well known that for multiscale energy injection and dissipation, the energy flux $Π_u$ varies with scales. In this review we describe this principle and show how this general framework is useful for describing a variety of turbulent phenomena. Compared to Kolmogorov's spectrum, the energy spectrum steepens in turbulence involving quasi-static magnetofluid, Ekman friction, stable stratification, magnetohydrodynamics, and solution with dilute polymer. However, in turbulent thermal convection, in unstably stratified turbulence such as Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence, and in shear turbulence, the energy spectrum has an opposite behaviour due to an increase of energy flux with wavenumber. In addition, we briefly describe the role of variable energy flux in quantum turbulence, in binary-fluid turbulence including time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg and Cahn-Hillianrd equations, and in Euler turbulence.
Energy flux plays a key role in the analyses of energy-cascading turbulence. In isotropic turbulence, the flux is given by a scalar as a function of the magnitude of the wavenumber. On the other hand, the flux in anisotropic turbulence should be a geometric vector that has a direction as well as the magnitude, and depends not only on the magnitude of the wavenumber but also on its direction. The energy-flux vector in the anisotropic turbulence cannot be uniquely determined in a way used for the isotropic flux. In this work, introducing two ansatzes, net locality and efficiency of the nonlinear…
Experiments and numerical simulations show that the energy spectrum of the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in the quasi-static limit deviates from Kolmogorov's $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum as the external magnetic field, or equivalently the interaction parameter, is increased. To explain this phenomena, we construct an analytical turbulence model with variable energy flux that arises due to the Lorentz-force induced dissipation. The energy spectra computed using our model for various interaction parameters are in qualitative agreement with earlier experimental and numerical results.
Two-dimensional statistically stationary isotropic turbulence with an imposed uniform scalar gradient is investigated. Dimensional arguments are presented to predict the inertial range scaling of the turbulent scalar flux spectrum in both the inverse cascade range and the enstrophy cascade range for small and unity Schmidt numbers. The scaling predictions are checked by direct numerical simulations and good agreement is observed.
High resolution direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional turbulence in stationary conditions are presented. The development of an energy-enstrophy double cascade is studied and found to be compatible with the classical Kraichnan theory in the limit of extended inertial ranges. The analysis of the joint distribution of energy and enstrophy fluxes in physical space reveals a small value of cross correlation. This result supports many experimental and numerical studies where only one cascade is generated.
The scale locality of energy fluxes for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is investigated numerically for stationary states of turbulence. Two types of forces are used to drive turbulence, a kinetic force that acts only on the velocity field and a kinetic-inductive forcing mechanism, which acts on the velocity and magnetic fields alike. The analysis is performed in spectral space, which is decomposed into a series of shells following a power law for the boundaries. The triadic transfers occurring among these shells are computed and the fluxes and locality functions are recovered by partial summation …
An ensemble model of turbulence is proposed. The ensemble consists of flow fields in which the flux of an inviscid conserved quantity, such as energy (or enstrophy in two-dimensional flow fields), across the wavenumber $k$ is a constant independent of $k$ in an appropriate range. Two-dimensional flow fields of constant enstrophy flux are sampled randomly by a Monte Carlo method. The energy spectra $E_k$ of the flow fields are consistent with the scaling $E_k \propto k^{-3}(\ln(k/k_\mathrm{b}))^{-1/3}$ where $k_\mathrm{b}$ is the bottom wavenumber of the constant-flux range.
In quasi-static MHD, experiments and numerical simulations reveal that the energy spectrum is steeper than Kolmogorov's $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum. To explain this observation, we construct turbulence models based on variable energy flux, which is caused by the Joule dissipation. In the first model, which is applicable to small interaction parameters, the energy spectrum is a power law, but with a spectral exponent steeper than -5/3. In the other limit of large interaction parameters, the second model predicts an exponential energy spectrum and flux. The model predictions are in good agreement with t…
Experiments and numerical simulations reveal that in the forward cascade regime, the energy spectrum of two-dimensional turbulence with Ekman friction deviates from Kraichnan's prediction of $k^{-3}$ power spectrum. In this letter we explain this observation using an analytic model based on variable enstrophy flux arising due to Ekman friction. We derive an expression for the enstrophy flux which exhibits a logarithmic dependence in the inertial range for the Ekman-friction dominated flows. The energy spectrum obtained using this enstrophy flux shows a power law scaling for large Reynolds numb…
In this paper we describe the mode-to-mode energy transfers and energy fluxes of MHD turbulence. These energy transfers are very useful for understanding the turbulence dynamics, as well as for applications such as dynamo. We illustrate how the energy fluxes provide valuable insights into the mechanism of growth of the large-scale magnetic energy in dynamo.
The nature of the nonlinear interactions in gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence, driven by an ion-temperature gradient instability, is investigated using numerical simulations of single ion species plasma in three-dimensional flux tube geometry. To account for the level of separation existing between scales involved in an energetic interaction, the degree of locality of the free energy scale flux is analyzed employing Kraichnan's infrared (IR) and ultraviolet locality functions. Due to the nontrivial dissipative nature of GK turbulence, an asymptotic level for the locality exponents, indicative of a u…
On dissipation time scales of the basic second-order moments: the effect on the Energy and Flux-Budget (EFB) turbulence closure for stably stratified turbulence
Turbulence is a paradigm for far-from-equilibrium systems without time reversal symmetry. To capture the nonequilibrium irreversible nature of turbulence and investigate its implications, we develop a potential landscape and flux field theory for turbulent flow and more general nonequilibrium fluid systems governed by stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. We find that equilibrium fluid systems with time reversibility are characterized by a detailed balance constraint that quantifies the detailed balance condition. In nonequilibrium fluid systems with nonequilibrium steady states, detailed balanc…
Using data from a large-scale three-dimensional simulation of supersonic isothermal turbulence, we have tested the validity of an exact flux relation derived analytically from the Navier--Stokes equation by Falkovich, Fouxon and Oz [2010 New relations for correlation functions in Navier--Stokes turbulence. J. Fluid Mech. 644, 465]. That relation, for compressible barotropic fluids, was derived assuming turbulence generated by a large-scale force. However, compressible turbulence in simulations is usually initialized and maintained by a large-scale acceleration, as in gravity-driven astrophysic…
The characterization of heat and momentum fluxes in wall-bounded turbulence is of paramount importance for a plethora of applications, ranging from engineering to Earth sciences. However, how the turbulent structures associated with velocity and temperature fluctuations interact to produce the emergent flux signatures, is not evident till date. In this work, we investigate this fundamental issue by studying the switching patterns of intermittently occurring turbulent fluctuations from one state to another, a phenomenon called persistence. We discover that the persistence patterns for heat and …
In this review, we describe turbulent drag reduction in a variety of flows using a universal framework of energy flux. In a turbulent flow with dilute polymers and magnetic field, the kinetic energy injected at large scales cascades to the velocity field at intermediate scales, as well as to the polymers and magnetic field at all scales. Consequently, the kinetic energy flux, $ Π_u(k) $, is suppressed in comparison to the pure hydrodynamic turbulence. We argue that the suppression of $Π_u(k)$ is an important factor in the reduction of the inertial force $\langle {\bf u \cdot \nabla u} \rangle$…
In ferrofluids the suspended ferromagnetic particles agglomerate due to the interaction between the particle magnetic moment and the external magnetic field, which in turn, influences the turbulence and relaxation time. The relaxation time becomes large when we are considering turbulence drag force instead of viscous drag force in Brownian motion. We investigate that the total energy conservation in ferrofluids taking into interaction between the external magnetic field and the ferrofluid.
We report that the power driving gravity and capillary wave turbulence in a statistically stationary regime displays fluctuations much stronger than its mean value. We show that its probability density function (PDF) has a most probable value close to zero and involves two asymmetric roughly exponential tails. We understand the qualitative features of the PDF using a simple Langevin type model.
We have advanced the energy and flux budget (EFB) turbulence closure theory that takes into account a two-way coupling between internal gravity waves (IGW) and the shear-free stably stratified turbulence. This theory is based on the budget equation for the total (kinetic plus potential) energy of IGW, the budget equations for the kinetic and potential energies of fluid turbulence, and turbulent fluxes of potential temperature for waves and fluid flow. The waves emitted at a certain level, propagate upward, and the losses of wave energy cause the production of turbulence energy. We demonstrate …
In this paper we advance physical background of the energy- and flux-budget turbulence closure based on the budget equations for the turbulent kinetic and potential energies and turbulent fluxes of momentum and buoyancy, and a new relaxation equation for the turbulent dissipation time-scale. The closure is designed for stratified geophysical flows from neutral to very stable and accounts for the Earth rotation. In accordance to modern experimental evidence, the closure implies maintaining of turbulence by the velocity shear at any gradient Richardson number Ri, and distinguishes between the tw…
There has been overwhelming evidence that coherent structures play a critical role in determining the overall transport in a variety of systems. We compute the probability distribution function (PDF) tails of momentum flux and heat flux in ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, by taking into account the interaction among modons, which are assumed to be coherent structures responsible for bursty and intermittent events, contributing to the PDF tails. The tail of PDF of momentum flux $R = < v_x v_y>$ is shown to be exponential with the form $\exp{\{-ξR^{3/2}\}}$, which is broader than a Gaussian,…
We consider developed turbulence in the 2D Gross-Pitaevsky model, which describes wide classes of phenomena from atomic and optical physics to condensed matter, fluids and plasma. The well-known difficulty of the problem is that the hypothetical local spectra of both inverse and direct cascades in the weak-turbulence approximation carry fluxes which are either zero or have the wrong sign; such spectra cannot be realized. We analytically derive the exact flux constancy laws (analogs of Kolmogorov's 4/5-law for incompressible fluid turbulence), expressed via the fourth-order moment and valid for…
We investigate sustenance and dependence on magnetic Prandtl number (${\rm Pm}$) for magnetorotational instability (MRI)-driven turbulence in astrophysical Keplerian disks with zero net magnetic flux using standard shearing box simulations. We focus on the turbulence dynamics in Fourier space, capturing specific/noncanonical anisotropy of nonlinear processes due to disk flow shear. This is a new type of nonlinear redistribution of modes over wavevector orientations in Fourier space -- the nonlinear transverse cascade -- which is generic to shear flows and fundamentally different from usual dir…
A temporal study of energy transfer across length scales is performed in 3D numerical simulations of homogeneous shear flow and isotropic turbulence. The average time taken by perturbations in the energy flux to travel between scales is measured and shown to be additive. Our data suggests that the propagation of disturbances in the energy flux is independent of the forcing and that it defines a `velocity' that determines the energy flux itself. These results support that the cascade is, on average, a scale-local process where energy is continuously transmitted from one scale to the next in ord…
By analyzing hot-wire velocity data taken in an open channel flow, an unambiguous definition of surface-layer thickness is here provided in terms of the cross-over scale between backward and forward energy fluxes. It is shown that the turbulence in the surface layer does not conform to the classical description of two-dimensional turbulence, since the direct energy cascade persists at scales smaller than the cross-over scale, comparable with the distance from the free-surface. The multifractal analysis of the one-dimensional surrogate of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate in terms o…
We study experimentally the influence of dissipation on stationary capillary wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid by changing its viscosity. We observe that the frequency power law scaling of the capillary spectrum departs significantly from its theoretical value when the dissipation is increased. The energy dissipated by capillary waves is also measured and found to increase nonlinearly with the mean power injected within the fluid. Here, we propose an experimental estimation of the energy flux at every scale of the capillary cascade. The latter is found to be non constant through the sc…
We advance our prior energy- and flux-budget turbulence closure model (Zilitinkevich et al., 2007, 2008) for the stably stratified atmospheric flows and extend it accounting for additional vertical flux of momentum and additional productions of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent potential energy (TPE) and turbulent flux of potential temperature due to large-scale internal gravity waves (IGW). Main effects of IGW are following: the maximal value of the flux Richardson number (universal constant 0.2-0.25 in the no-IGW regime) becomes strongly variable. In the vertically homogeneous stratificati…
A derivation of the "exact" two-point equations analogous to those used as a basis for one-point Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model for variable density, incompressible turbulence. The purpose is to present the statistical correlations that must be dealt with to yield a two-point, or alternatively, a spectral model of variable density turbulence.
We calculate the net energy per unit time exchanged between two sets of modes in a generic system governed by a three-wave kinetic equation. Our calculation is based on the property of detailed energy conservation of the triadic resonant interactions. In a first application to isotropic systems, we rederive the standard formula for the energy flux as a particular case for adjacent sets. We then exploit the new formalism to quantify the level of locality of the energy transfers in the example of surface capillary waves. A second application to anisotropic wave systems expands the currently avai…
In this paper, using Pao's conjecture [Y.-H. Pao, Phys. Fluids 11, 1371 (1968)], we derive expressions for the spectra and fluxes of kinetic energy and enstrophy for two-dimensional (2D) forced turbulence that extend beyond the inertial range. In these expressions, the fluxes and the spectra contain additional factors of the exponential form. To validate these model predictions, we perform numerical simulations of 2D turbulence with an external force applied at $k=k_f$ in the intermediate range. The numerical results match with the model predictions, except for the energy and enstrophy fluxes …
The energy and flux budget (EFB) closure theory for a passive scalar (non-buoyant and non-inertial particles or gaseous admixtures) is developed for stably stratified turbulence. The physical background of the EFB turbulence closures is based on the budget equations for the turbulent kinetic and potential energies and turbulent fluxes of momentum and buoyancy, as well as the turbulent flux of particles. The EFB turbulence closure is designed for stratified geophysical flows from neutral to very stable stratification and it implies that turbulence is maintained by the velocity shear at any stra…
In this two--part study, we present the development and analysis of a stochastic theory for characterizing the relative positions of monodisperse, low-inertia particle pairs that are settling rapidly in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. In the limits of small Stokes number and Froude number such that $Fr \ll St_η\ll 1$, closures are developed for the drift and diffusion fluxes in the probability density function (PDF) equation for the pair relative positions. The theory focuses on the relative motion of particle pairs in the dissipation regime of turbulence, i.e., for pair separations smaller …
In hydrodynamic turbulence, the kinetic energy injected at large scales cascades to the inertial range, leading to a constant kinetic energy flux. In contrast, in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, a fraction of kinetic energy is transferred to the magnetic energy. Consequently, for the same kinetic energy injection rate, the kinetic energy flux in MHD turbulence is reduced compared to its hydrodynamic counterpart. This leads to relative weakening of the nonlinear term ($\la | ({\bf u}\cdot \nabla) {\bf u} | \ra$, where ${\bf u}$ is the velocity field) and turbulent drag, but strengthening …
We investigate the drift wave -- zonal flow dynamics in a shearless slab geometry with the new flux-balanced Hasegawa-Wakatani model. As in previous Hasegawa-Wakatani models, we observe a sharp transition from a turbulence dominated regime to a zonal jet dominated regime as we decrease the plasma resistivity. However, unlike previous models, zonal structures are always present in the flux-balanced model, even for high resistivity, and strongly reduce the level of particle and vorticity flux. The more robust zonal jets also have a higher variability than in previous models, which is further enh…
Large-scale turbulence in fluid layers and other quasi-two-dimensional compressible systems consists of planar vortices and waves. Separately, wave turbulence usually produces a direct energy cascade, while solenoidal planar turbulence transports energy to large scales by an inverse cascade. Here, we consider turbulence at finite Mach numbers when the interaction between acoustic waves and vortices is substantial. We employ solenoidal pumping at intermediate scales and show how both direct and inverse energy cascades are formed starting from the pumping scale. We show that there is an inverse …
The role of supersonic turbulence in structuring the interstellar medium (ISM) remains an unsettled question. Here, this problem is investigated using a newexact law of compressible isothermal hydrodynamic turbulence, which involves two-point correlations in physical space. The new law is shown to have a compact expression that contains a single flux term reminiscent of the incompressible case and a source term with a simple expression whose sign is given by the divergence of the velocity. The law is then used to investigate the properties of such a turbulence at integral Mach number $4$ produ…
We investigate the locality or nonlocality of the energy transfer and of the spectral interactions involved in the cascade for decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in the presence of a uniform magnetic field $\bf B$ at various intensities. The results are based on a detailed analysis of three-dimensional numerical flows at moderate Reynold numbers. The energy transfer functions, as well as the global and partial fluxes, are examined by means of different geometrical wavenumber shells. On the one hand, the transfer functions of the two conserved Elsässer energies $E^+$ and $E^-$ are found l…
Within wall turbulence, there is a sublayer where the mean wall-normal flux of the streamwise momentum is constant and related to the logarithmic wall-normal profile of the mean streamwise velocity. This relation, i.e., the law of the wall, has been used to estimate the mean stress at the wall surface. However, the momentum flux exhibits large temporal fluctuations. To relate them theoretically to those of the streamwise velocity at the same position from the wall, we consider an orthogonal decomposition of the fluctuations on a plane of the streamwise and wall-normal velocities. Since a large…
In recent years, scale-by-scale energy transport in wall turbulence has been intensively studied, and the complex spatial and interscale transfer of turbulent energy has been investigated. As the enhancement of heat transfer is one of the most important aspects of turbulence from an engineering perspective, it is also important to study how turbulent heat fluxes are transported in space and in scale by nonlinear multi-scale interactions in wall turbulence as well as turbulent energy. In the present study, the spectral transport budgets of turbulent heat fluxes are investigated based on direct …
We derive equations for the mean entropy and the mean internal energy in the low-Mach-number temperature stratified turbulence (i.e., for turbulent convection or stably stratified turbulence), and show that turbulent flux of entropy is given by ${\bf F}_s=\overlineρ \, \overline{{\bf u} s}$, where $\overlineρ$ is the mean fluid density, $s$ are fluctuations of entropy and overbars denote averaging over an ensemble of turbulent velocity field, ${\bf u}$. We demonstrate that the turbulent flux of entropy is different from the turbulent convective flux, ${\bf F}_c=\overline{T} \, \overlineρ \, \o…
Magnetized turbulence is ubiquitous in many astrophysical and terrestrial systems but no complete, uncontested theory even in the simplest form, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), exists. Many theories and phenomenologies focus on the joint (kinetic and magnetic) energy fluxes and spectra. We highlight the importance of treating kinetic and magnetic energies separately to shed light on MHD turbulence dynamics. We conduct an implicit large eddy simulation of subsonic, super-Alfvénic MHD turbulence and analyze the scale-wise energy transfer over time. Our key finding is that the kinetic energy spectrum…
This article investigates penetrative turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. Using a large eddy simulation approach, we study characteristics of the mixed layer with respect to surface heat flux variations in the range from 231.48 W/m$^2$ to 925.92 W/m$^2$, and observe that the surface heterogeneity on a spatial scale of $20$ km leads to downscale turbulent kinetic energy cascade. Coherent fluctuations of mesoscale horizontal wind is observed at 100m above the ground. Such a surface induced temporal oscillations in the horizontal wind suggest a rapid jump in mesocale wind forecasts, whi…
A decomposition of the energy and helicity fluxes in a turbulent hydrodynamic flow is proposed. The decomposition is based on the projection of the flow to a helical basis that allows to investigate separately the role of interactions among modes of different helicity. The proposed formalism is then applied in large scale numerical simulations of a non-helical and a helical flow, where the decomposed fluxes are explicitly calculated. It is shown that the total energy flux can be split in to three fluxes that independently remain constant in the inertial range. One of these fluxes that correspo…
In this review we summarise the current status of the quasi-static magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The energy spectrum is steeper than Kolmogorov's $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum due to the decrease of the kinetic energy flux with wavenumber $k$ as a result of Joule dissipation. The spectral index decreases with the increase of interaction parameter. The flow is quasi two-dimensional with strong ${\bf U}_\perp$ at small $k$ and weak $U_\parallel$ at large $k$, where ${\bf U}_\perp$ and $U_\parallel$ are the perpendicular and parallel components of velocity relative to the external magnetic field. For sma…
Using highly resolved direct numerical simulations we examine the statistical properties of the local energy flux rate $Π_\ell(x)$ towards small scales for three isotropic turbulent magnetohydrodynamic flows, which differ in strength and structure of the magnetic field. We analyse the cascade process both in the kinetic and magnetic energy, disentangling the different flux contributions to the overall energy dynamics. The results show that the probability distribution of the local energy flux develops long tails related to extreme events, similar to the hydrodynamic case. The different terms o…
Using the theory of wave turbulence for rapidly rotating incompressible fluids derived by Galtier (2003), we find the locality conditions that the solutions of the kinetic equation must satisfy. We show that the exact anisotropic Kolmogorov-Zakharov (KZ) spectrum satisfies these conditions, which justifies the existence of this constant (positive) energy flux solution. Although a direct cascade is predicted in the transverse ($\perp$) and parallel ($\parallel$) directions to the rotation axis, we show numerically that in the latter case some triadic interactions can have a negative contributio…
In fully developed three dimensional fluid turbulence the fluctuating energy is supplied at large scales, cascades through intermediate scales, and dissipates at small scales. It is the hallmark of turbulence that for intermediate scales, in the so called inertial range, the average energy flux is constant and independent of viscosity [1-3]. One very important question is how this range is altered, when an additional agent that can also transport energy is added to the fluid. Long-chain polymers dissolved at very small concentrations in the fluid are such an agent [4,5]. Based on prior work by…
Turbulent fluxes in the atmospheric surface layer are key input for the prediction of weather, hydrology, and carbon dioxide concentration. In numerical modelling of turbulent fluxes, a -7/3 power-law scaling in turbulence cospectra is usually assumed at high wavenumbers. In eddy-covariance (EC) measurements of turbulent fluxes, an assumed shape of turbulence cospectra is typically required for high-frequency spectral corrections, typically assuming a -7/3 power law. The derivation of -7/3 power-law scaling is based primarily on dimensional analysis, and other cospectral scaling has also been …
We investigate experimentally the influence of a background rotation on the energy transfers in decaying grid turbulence. The anisotropic energy flux density, ${\bf F} ({\bf r}) = < δ{\bf u}\,(δ{\bf u})^2 >$, where $δ{\bf u}$ is the vector velocity increment over separation ${\bf r}$, is determined for the first time using Particle Image Velocimetry. We show that rotation induces an anisotropy of the energy flux $\nabla \cdot {\bf F}$, which leads to an anisotropy growth of the energy distribution $E({\bf r}) = < (δ{\bf u})^2 >$, in agreement with the Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation. Surprisingl…
Three-dimensional, compressible, magnetohydrodynamic turbulence of an isothermal, self-gravitating fluid is analyzed using two-point statistics in the asymptotic limit of large Reynolds numbers (both kinetic and magnetic). Following an alternative formulation proposed by S. Banerjee and S. Galtier (Phys. Rev. E,93, 033120, 2016) and S. Banerjee and S. Galtier (J. Phys. A, Math. and Theor.,50, 015501, 2017), an exact relation has been derived for the total energy transfer. This approach results in a simpler relation expressed entirely in terms of mixed second-order structure functions. The kine…
