Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.
Thin crystalline layers of TaAs Weyl semimetal (9 and 18 nm thick) are grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) substrates. The (001) planes of the tetragonal TaAs lattice are parallel to the GaAs(001) substrate, but the corresponding in-plane crystallographic directions of the substrate and the layer are rotated by 45°. In spite of a substantial lattice mismatch (about 19%) between GaAs(001) substrate and TaAs epilayer no misfit dislocations are observed at the GaAs(001)/TaAs(001) interface. Only stacking fault defects in TaAs are detected with transmission electron microscopy. Thorough X…
We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbP, and NbAs, utilizing diffraction techniques (single crystal x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy) and imaging techniques (transmission electron microscopy/scanning transmission electron microscopy). We observe defects of various degrees, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of all four semimetals. While TaP displays a large pnictide deficiency with composition TaP$_{0.83(3)}$, and stacking faults accompanied by anti-site disorder and site vacancies, TaAs displays transition metal deficiency with composi…
As a fascinating topological phase of matter, Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent chiral terahertz emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs and demonstrate unprecedented manipulation over its polarization on a femtosecond timescale. Such polarization control is achieved via the colossal ultrafast photocurrents in TaAs arising from the circular or linear photogalvanic effect. We unravel …
Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry change a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like the newly discovered topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurr…
We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and TaP, utilizing diffraction and imaging techniques, where we show that they contain a high density of defects, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of both semimetals. Despite the observed defects and non-stoichiometry on samples grown using techniques already reported in the literature, de Haas-van Alphen measurements on TaP reveal quantum oscillations and a high carrier mobility, an indication that the crystals are of quality comparable to those reported elsewhere. Electronic structure calculations on TaAs reveal that the p…
We present a novel method to measure transient photovoltage at nanointerfaces using ultrafast electron diffraction. In particular, we report our results on the photoinduced electronic excitations and their ensuing relaxations in a hydroxyl-terminated silicon surface, a standard substrate for fabricating molecular electronics interfaces. The transient surface voltage is determined by observing Coulomb refraction changes induced by the modified space-charge barrier within a selectively probed volume by femtosecond electron pulses. The results are in agreement with ultrafast photoemission studies…
We report on ultrafast electron diffraction on high quality single crystal silicon. The ultrafast dynamics of the Bragg peaks exhibits a giant photo-induced response which can only be explained in the framework of dynamical diffraction theory, taking into account multiple scattering of the probing electrons in the sample. In particular, we show that lattice heating following photo-excitation can cause an unexpected increase of the Bragg peak intensities, in contradiction with the well-known Debye-Waller effect. We anticipate that multiple scattering should be systematically considered in ultra…
We use ultrafast x-ray pulses to characterize the lattice response of SrTiO3 when driven by strong terahertz (THz) fields. We observe transient changes in the diffraction intensity with a delayed onset with respect to the driving field. Fourier analysis reveals two frequency components corresponding to the two lowest energy zone-center optical modes in SrTiO3. The lower frequency mode exhibits clear softening as the temperature is decreased while the higher frequency mode shows slight temperature dependence.
We report the lattice dynamics of transition metal thin films by using the ultrafast electron diffraction. We observe a suppression of the diffraction intensity in a few picosecond after the photoexcitation, which is directly interpreted as the lattice heating via the electron-phonon interaction. The electron-phonon coupling constants for Au, Cu and Mo are quantitatively evaluated by employing the two-temperature model, which are consistent with those obtained by optical pump-probe methods. The variation in the lattice dynamics of the transition metals are systematically explained by the stren…
Ultrafast lattice deformation of tens to hundreds of nanometer thick metallic crystals, after femtosecond laser excitation, was measured directly using 8.04 keV subpicosecond x-ray and 59 keV femtosecond electron pulses. Coherent phonons were generated in both single crystal and polycrystalline films. Lattice compression was observed within the first few picoseconds after laser irradiation in single crystal aluminum, which was attributed to the generation of a blast force and the propagation of elastic waves. The different time scale of lattice heating for tens and hundreds nanometer thick fil…
It has been technically challenging to concurrently probe the electrons and the lattices in materials during non-equilibrium processes, allowing their correlations to be determined. Here, in a single set of ultrafast electron diffraction patterns taken on the charge-density-wave (CDW) material 1T-TaSeTe, we discover a temporal shift in the diffraction intensity measurements as a function of scattering angle. With the help of dynamic models and theoretical calculations, we show that the ultrafast electrons probe both the valence-electron and lattice dynamic processes, resulting in the temporal …
In a recent letter (F. Carbone, P. Baum, P. Rudolf, et al., Physical Review Letters 100, 2008), graphite is reported to undergo a c-axis contraction on the time scale of few picoseconds (ps) after ultrafast pulsed laser excitation. The velocity of lattice contraction depended on the laser fluence. Furthermore, the lattice contraction is followed by large, non-thermal, lattice expansion of several picometers (pm) after few hundreds of ps. These results were interpreted based on the position of the (0014) diffraction spot in the glancing angle diffraction geometry off the graphite surface using …
The ultrafast structure dynamics and surface transient electric field, which are concurrently induced by laser excited electrons of an aluminum nanofilm, have been investigated simultaneously by the same transmission electron diffraction patterns. These two processes are found to be significantly different and distinguishable by tracing the time dependent changes of electron diffraction and deflection angles, respectively. This study also provides a practical means to evaluate simultaneously the effect of transient electric field during the study of structural dynamics under low pump fluence b…
Exciting electrons in solids with intense light pulses offers the possibility of generating new states of matter through nonthermal means and controlling their macroscopic properties on femto- to picosecond timescales. One way to manipulate a solid is by altering its lattice structure, which often underlies the electronic, magnetic and other phases. Here, we review how structures of solids are affected by photoexcitation and how their ultrafast dynamics are captured with time-resolved electron diffraction and microscopy. Specifically, we survey how a strong light pulse has been used to tailor …
One central challenge in understanding phonon thermal transport is a lack of experimental tools to investigate mode-based transport information. Although recent advances in computation lead to mode-based information, it is hindered by unknown defects in bulk region and at interfaces. Here we present a framework that can reveal microscopic phonon transport information in heterostructures, integrating state-of-the-art ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with advanced scientific machine learning. Taking advantage of the dual temporal and reciprocal-space resolution in UED, we are able to reliabl…
Intense, few-cycle pulses in the terahertz frequency range have strong potential for schemes of control over vibrational modes in solid-state materials in the electronic ground-state. Here we report an experiment using single cycle terahertz pulses to directly excite lattice vibrations in the ferroelectric material $\mathrm{Sn_2P_2S_6}$ and ultrafast x-ray diffraction to quantify the resulting structural dynamics. A model of a damped harmonic oscillator driven by the transient electric field of the terahertz pulses describes well the movement of the Sn$^{2+}$ ion along the ferroelectric soft m…
Transitions between different charge density wave (CDW) states in quasi-two-dimensional materials may be accompanied also by changes in the inter-layer stacking of the CDW. Using MeV ultrafast electron diffraction, the out-of-plane stacking order dynamics in the quasi-two-dimensional dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ is investigated for the first time. From the intensity of the CDW satellites aligned around the commensurate $l$ = 1/6 characteristic stacking order, it is found out that this phase disappears with a 0.5 ps time constant. Simultaneously, in the same experiment, the emergence of the incomm…
Femtosecond, 8.04 KeV x-ray pulses are used to probe the lattice dynamics of 150 nm Cu (111) single crystal on mica substrate irradiated with 400 nm, 100 fs laser pulses. For pump fluencies below the damage and melting threshold, we observed lattice contraction due to the formation of a blast force, and coherent acoustic phonons with a period of ~69 ps. At larger pump fluence, solid to liquid phase transition, annealing, and recrystallization were measured in real time by monitoring the intensity evolution of the probing fs x-ray rocking curves and agreed with theoretical simulation results. T…
Recent years have seen the rapid discovery of solids whose low-energy electrons have a massless, linear dispersion, such as Weyl, line-node, and Dirac semimetals. The remarkable optical properties predicted in these materials show their versatile potential for optoelectronic uses. However, little is known of their response in the picoseconds after absorbing a photon. Here we measure the ultrafast dynamics of four materials that share non-trivial band structure topology but that differ chemically, structurally, and in their low-energy band structures: ZrSiS, which hosts a Dirac line node and Di…
Radio-frequency compressed ultrafast electron diffraction has been used to probe the coherent and incoherent coupling of impulsive electronic excitation at 1.55 eV (800 nm) to optical and acoustic phonon modes directly from the perspective of the lattice degrees of freedom. A bi-exponential suppression of diffracted intensity due to relaxation of the electronic system into incoherent phonons is observed, with the 250 fs fast contribution dominated by coupling to the $E_{2g2}$ optical phonon mode at the $Γ$-point ($Γ-E_{2g2}$) and $A_1^{'}$ optical phonon mode at the $K$-point ($K-A_1^{'}$). Bo…
Quantitative knowledge of electron-phonon coupling is important for many applications as well as for the fundamental understanding of nonequilibrium relaxation processes. Time-resolved diffraction provides direct access to this knowledge through its sensitivity to laser-induced lattice dynamics. Here, we present an approach for analyzing time-resolved polycrystalline diffraction data. A two-step routine is used to minimize the number of time-dependent fit parameters. The lattice dynamics are extracted by finding the best fit to the full transient diffraction pattern rather than by analyzing tr…
We investigate the heat transport through a rare earth multilayer system composed of Yttrium (Y), Dysprosium (Dy) and Niobium (Nb) by ultrafast X-ray diffraction. This is an example of a complex heat flow problem on the nanoscale, where several different quasi-particles carry the heat. The Bragg peak positions of each layer represent layer-specific thermometers that measure the energy flow through the sample after excitation of the Y top-layer with fs-laser pulses. In an experiment-based analytic solution to the nonequilibrium heat transport problem, we derive the individual contributions of t…
We report an ultrafast electron diffraction study of silver nanocrystals under surface plasmon resonance excitation, leading to a concerted fragmentation. By examining simultaneously transient structural, thermal, and Coulombic signatures of the prefragmented state, an electronically driven nonthermal fragmentation scenario is proposed.
We synthesize sub-THz longitudinal quasi-monochromatic acoustic phonons in a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal using a SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice as an optical-acoustic transducer. The generated acoustic phonon spectrum is determined using ultrafast X-ray diffraction. The analysis of the generated phonon spectrum in the time domain reveals a k-vector dependent phonon lifetime. It is observed that even at sub-THz frequencies the phonon lifetime agrees with the 1/$ω^2$ power law known from Akhiezer's model for hyper sound attenuation. The observed shift of the synthesized spectrum to the higher $q$…
Femtosecond carrier recombination in PbI2 is measured using tabletop high-harmonic extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy and ultrafast electron diffraction. XUV absorption from 45 eV to 62 eV measures transitions from the iodine 4d core level to the conduction band density of states. Photoexcitation at 400 nm creates separate and distinct transient absorption signals for holes and electrons, separated in energy by the 2.4 eV band gap of the semiconductor. The shape of the conduction band and therefore the XUV absorption spectrum is temperature dependent, and nonradiative …
The dynamics of the photoinduced commensurate to incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in 4Hb-TaSe2 are investigated by femtosecond electron diffraction. In the perturbative regime the CDW reforms on a 150 ps timescale, which is two orders of magnitude slower than in other transition-metal dichalcogenides. We attribute this to a weak coupling between the CDW carrying T-layers and thus demonstrate the importance of three-dimensionality for the existence of CDWs. With increasing optical excitation the phase transition is achieved showing a second order character in contrast t…
The ultrafast dynamics of the octahedral rotation in Ca:SrTiO3 is studied by time resolved x-ray diffraction after photo excitation over the band gap. By monitoring the diffraction intensity of a superlattice reflection that is directly related to the structural order parameter of the soft-mode driven antiferrodistortive phase in Ca:SrTiO3, we observe a ultrafast relaxation on a 0.2 ps timescale of the rotation of the oxygen octahedron, which is found to be independent of the initial temperaure despite large changes in the corresponding soft-mode frequency. A further, much smaller reduction on…
We present ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments on thin films of metallic SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) after their excitation with ultrashort intense laser pulses. Depending on the layer thickness, the data exhibit a transient splitting of the (002) SRO Bragg peak evidencing the generation and propagation of sharp acoustic strain waves. These distinct structural dynamics are due to the exceptionally fast electron-phonon relaxation that gives rise to a quasi-instantaneous thermal stress in SRO. The interpretation is corroborated by numerical simulations which show excellent agreement with the experimenta…
Metal-corroles are macrocycle organic molecules with numerous practical applications. In particular, copper corroles exhibit an interesting saddled geometry, which has attracted significant attention from theoreticians and experimentalists over the years. The present work is dedicated to understand the effect of structural saddling in a copper corrole on potential probe signals via imaging ultrafast coherent electron dynamics. A linearly polarized pulse is used to trigger the electron dynamics and time-resolved x-ray diffraction is employed to image the triggered dynamics. It is found that the…
Dynamical diffraction effects in single crystals produce highly monochromatic parallel X-ray beams with a mutual separation of a few micrometer and a time-delay of a few fs -the so-called echoes. This ultrafast diffraction effect is used at X-ray Free Electron Lasers in self-seeding schemes to improve beam monochromaticity. Here, we present a coherent X-ray imaging measurement of echoes from Si crystals and demonstrate that a small surface strain can be used to tune their temporal delay. These results represent a first step towards the ambitious goal of strain-tailoring new X-ray optics.
We introduce ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction (ULEED) in backscattering for the study of structural dynamics at surfaces. Using a tip-based source of ultrashort electron pulses, we investigate the optically-driven transition between charge-density wave phases at the surface of 1T-TaS2. The large transfer width of the instrument allows us to employ spot-profile analysis, resolving the phase-ordering kinetics in the nascent incommensurate charge-density wave phase. We observe a coarsening that follows a power-law scaling of the correlation length, driven by the annihilation of dislocati…
As a 3D topological insulator, bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) has potential applications for electrically and optically controllable magnetic and optoelectronic devices. How the carriers interact with lattice is important to understand the coupling with its topological phase. It is essential to measure with a time scale smaller than picoseconds for initial interaction. Here we use an X-ray free-electron laser to perform time-resolved diffraction to study ultrafast carrier-induced lattice contractions and interlayer modulations in Bi2Se3 thin films. The lattice contraction depends on the carrier con…
Bulk layered MX2 transition metal chalcogenides (M = Mo, W and X = S, Se) are known to exhibit an indirect to direct band gap transition as the number of layers is reduced. Previous time-resolved work has principally focused on the investigation of the transient evolution of the band structure after photo-excitation, but additional information on the dynamics of the concomitant lattice rearrangement is needed to fully understand this phenomenon. Here, ultrafast electron diffraction is used to probe the atomic motion and bond dilation in monolayer WSe2 with femtosecond temporal resolution. The …
We present a combined ultrafast optical pump-probe and ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurement of the CDW dynamics in SmTe$_3$ at 300 K. The ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurements, taken at the Linac Coherent Light Source reveal a $\sim 1.55$ THz mode that becomes overdamped with increasing fluence. We identify this oscillation with the lattice component of the amplitude mode. Furthermore, these data allow for a more clear identification of the frequencies present in the optical pump-probe data. In both, reflectivity and diffraction, we observe a crossover of the response from linear (for sm…
Time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been used to measure the low-temperature thermal transport properties of a Pt/Gd3Fe5O12//Gd3Ga5O12 metal/oxide heterostructure relevant to applications in spin caloritronics. A pulsed femtosecond optical signal produces a rapid temperature rise in the Pt layer, followed by heat transport into the Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG) thin film and the Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrate. The time dependence of x-ray diffraction from the GdIG layer was tracked using an accelerator-based femtosecond x-ray source. The ultrafast diffraction measurements probed the intensity of the GdIG (1 -1 …

The dynamics of thermal and non-thermal lattice deformation of nanometer thick polycrystalline aluminum film has been studied by means of femtosecond (fs) time-resolved electron diffraction. We utilized two different pump wavelengths: 800 nm, the fundamental of Ti: sapphire laser and 1250 nm generated by a home-made optical parametric amplifier(OPA). Our data show that, although coherent phonons were generated under both conditions, the diffraction intensity decayed with the characteristic time of 0.9+/-0.3 ps and 1.7+/-0.3 ps under 800 nm and 1250 nm excitation, respectively. Because the 800 …
Enabling the light-control of complex systems on ultra-short timescales gives rise to rich physics with promising applications. While crucial, the quantitative determination of both the longitudinal and shear photo-induced strains still remains challenging. Here, by scrutinizing asymmetric Bragg peaks pairs $(\pm h01)$ using picosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments in BiFeO$_3$, we simultaneously determine the longitudinal and shear strains. The relative amplitude of those strains can be explained only if both thermal and non-thermal processes contribute to the acoustic phonon ph…
Strongly correlated materials that exhibit an insulator-metal transition are key candidates in the search for new computing platforms. Understanding the pathways and timescales underlying the electrically-driven insulator-metal transition is crucial for uncovering the fundamental limits of device operation. Using stroboscopic electron diffraction, we perform synchronized time-resolved measurements of atomic motions and electronic transport in operating vanadium dioxide switches. We discover an electrically-triggered, isostructural state that forms transiently on microsecond timescales, stabili…
Impacts of Hot Electron Diffusion, Electron-Phonon Coupling, and Surface Atoms on Metal Surface Dynamics Revealed by Reflection Ultrafast Electron Diffraction
Coherent phonons (CP) generated by laser pulses on the femtosecond scale have been proposed as a means to achieve ultrafast, non-thermal switching in phase-change materials such as Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$(GST). Here we use ultrafast optical pump pulses to induce coherent acoustic phonons and stroboscopically measure the corresponding lattice distortions in GST using 100 ps x-ray pulses from the ESRF storage ring. A linear-chain model provides a good description of the observed changes in the diffraction signal, however, the magnitudes of the measured shifts are too large to be explained by th…
We use femtosecond electron diffraction to study ultrafast lattice dynamics in the highly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) semiconductor NiO. Using the scattering vector (Q) dependence of Bragg diffraction, we introduce a Q-resolved effective lattice temperature, and identify a nonthermal lattice state with preferential displacement of O compared to Ni ions, which occurs within ~0.3 ps and persists for 25 ps. We associate this with transient changes to the AF exchange striction-induced lattice distortion, supported by the observation of a transient Q-asymmetry of Friedel pairs. Our observatio…
In ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments, accurate retrieval of time-resolved structural parameters, such as atomic coordinates and thermal displacement parameters, requires an accurate scattering model. Unfortunately, kinematical models are often inaccurate even for relativistic electron probes, especially for dense, oriented single crystals where strong channeling and multiple scattering effects are present. This article introduces and demonstrates dynamical scattering models tailored for quantitative analysis of UED experiments performed on single-crystal films. As a case study, …
Laser melting of semiconductors has been observed for almost 40 years; surprisingly, it is not well understood where most theoretical simulations show a laser-induced thermal process. $\textit{Ab initio}$ nonadiabatic simulations based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory reveal intrinsic nonthermal melting of silicon, at a temperature far below the thermal melting temperature of 1680 K. Both excitation threshold and time evolution of diffraction intensity agree well with experiment. Nonthermal melting is attributed to excitation-induced drastic changes in bonding electron den…
Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures, recent research efforts have been directed towards the long sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real-time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, th…
In metal nanoparticles (NPs) supracrystals, the metallic core provides some key properties, e.g. magnetization, plasmonic response or conductivity, with the ligand molecules giving rise to others like solubility, assembly or interaction with biomolecules. The formation of these supracrystals depends on a complex interplay between many forces, some stemming from the core, some from the ligands. At present, there is no known approach to characterize the local order of ligand molecules or their dynamics with atomic spatial resolution. Here, we develop a methodology based on small-angle ultrafast …
We demonstrate that highly-ordered two-dimensional crystals of ligand-capped gold nanoparticles display a local photo-mechanical stiffness as high as that of solids such as graphite. In out-of equilibrium electron diffraction experiments, a strong temperature jump is induced in a thin film with a femtosecond laser pulse. The initial electronic excitation transfers energy to the underlying structural degrees of freedom, with a rate generally proportional to the stiffness of the material. With femtosecond small-angle electron diffraction, we observe the temporal evolution of the diffraction feat…
