Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric materials like NbOI$_{2}$ have garnered significant interest, yet their temporal response and synergetic interaction with light remain underexplored. Previous studies on the polarization of oxide ferroelectrics have relied on time-resolved optical second harmonic generation or ultrafast X-ray scattering. Here, we probe the laser-induced polarization dynamics of 2D NbOI$_{2}$ nanocrystals using ultrafast transmission electron diffraction and deflectometry. The deflection of the electron pulses is directly sensitive to the changes in the polarization, while the diffraction signal captures the structural evolution. Excited with a UV laser pulse, the polarization of NbOI$_{2}$ is initially suppressed for two picoseconds, then it recovers and overshoots, leading to a transiently enhanced polarization persisting for over 200 ps. This recovery coincides with coherent acoustic phonon generation, triggering a piezoresponse in the NbOI$_{2}$ nanocrystals. Our results offer a new method for sensing the ferroelectric order parameter in femtosecond time scales.

The ability to manipulate ferroelectrics at ultrafast speeds has long been an elusive target for materials research. Coherently exciting the ferroelectric mode with ultrashort optical pulses holds the promise to switch the ferroelectric polarization on femtosecond timescale, two orders of magnitude faster compared to what is possible today with pulsed electric fields. Here, we report on the demonstration of ultrafast optical reversal of the ferroelectric polarization in LiNbO3. Rather than driving the ferroelectric mode directly, we couple to it indirectly by resonant excitation of an auxiliar…
We calculate the ferroelectric polarization dynamics induced by a femtosecond midinfrared pulse as measured in the recent experiment by R. Mankowsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 197601 (2017). It is due to the nonlinear coupling of the excited infrared-active phonon with the ferroelectric mode or to the excitation of the ferroelectric mode itself depending on the pulse frequency. To begin with, we write the LiNbO$_3$ crystal symmetry invariant thermodynamic potential including electric field and nonlinear phonon coupling terms. We solve the equations of motion determined by this potential for…
We report on the emission of terahertz radiation by irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses in non-centrosymmetric paraelectric and ferroelectric phases of Co$_3$B$_7$O$_{13}$I boracite. The Generation of the terahertz waves in both phases is caused by optical rectification via a second-order nonlinear optical effect. In the ferroelectric phase, we successfully visualized ferroelectric domains by analyzing the polarization state of the terahertz wave radiated from the crystal. In a large area of the crystal ($\sim$ 500 $\times$ 500 $μ$m$^2$), the observed polarization vector of the radiated te…
We demonstrate a new method to detect ferroelectric domains in inside and surface regions of organic ferroelectrics by mapping out two orthogonally polarized terahertz waves radiated from the crystal upon the irradiation of near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses. We used polarization dependence of the effective depths radiating the terahertz waves, which originate from the optical anisotropy in the terahertz frequency region. This allows us to distinguish ferroelectric domains in the inside and surface regions of the crystals. We applied this method to a room-temperature organic supramolecular…
A new approach to all-optical detection and control of the coupling between electric and magnetic order on ultrafast timescales is achieved using time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) to study a ferroelectric (FE)/ferromagnet (FM) oxide heterostructure. We use femtosecond optical pulses to modify the spin alignment in a Ba$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$TiO$_{3}$(BSTO)/La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LCMO) heterostructure and selectively probe the ferroelectric response using SHG. In this heterostructure, the pump pulses photoexcite non-equilibrium quasiparticles in LCMO, which rapidly interact with…
The dynamical processes associated with electric field manipulation of the polarization in a ferroelectric remain largely unknown but fundamentally determine the speed and functionality of ferroelectric materials and devices. Here we apply sub-picosecond duration, single-cycle terahertz pulses as an ultrafast electric field bias to prototypical BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric thin films with the atomic-scale response probed by femtosecond x-ray scattering techniques. We show that electric fields applied perpendicular to the ferroelectric polarization drive large amplitude displacements of the titanium…
Rashba materials have appeared as an ideal playground for spin-to-charge conversion in prototype spintronics devices. Among them, $α$-GeTe(111) is a non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric (FE) semiconductor for which a strong spin-orbit interaction gives rise to giant Rashba coupling. Its room temperature ferroelectricity was recently demonstrated as a route towards a new type of highly energy-efficient non-volatile memory device based on switchable polarization. Currently based on the application of an electric field, the writing and reading processes could be outperformed by the use of femtosecon…
Terahertz (THz) radiation has been observed from multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ thin films via ultrafast modulation of spontaneous polarization upon carrier excitation with illumination of femtosecond laser pulses. The radiated THz pulses from BiFeO$_3$ thin films were clarified to directly reflect the spontaneous polarization state, giving rise to a memory effect in a unique style and enabling THz radiation even at zero-bias electric field. On the basis of our findings, we demonstrate potential approaches to ferroelectric nonvolatile random access memory with nondestructive readability and ferroelect…
We report a comprehensive study of ultrafast carrier dynamics in single crystals of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$. Using femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy, we find that the photoexcited electrons relax to the conduction band minimum through electron-phonon coupling with a $\sim$1 picosecond time constant that does not significantly change across the antiferromagnetic transition. Photoexcited electrons subsequently leave the conduction band and primarily decay via radiative recombination, which is supported by photoluminescence measurements. We find that despite the coexisting ferroelectri…
The collective dynamics of topological structures have been of great interest from both fundamental and applied perspectives. For example, the studies of dynamical properties of magnetic vortices and skyrmions not only deepened the understanding of many-body physics but also led to potential applications in data processing and storage. Topological structures constructed from electrical polarization rather than spin have recently been realized in ferroelectric superlattices, promising for ultrafast electric-field control of topological orders. However, little is known about the dynamics of such…
Photo-switching the physical properties of molecular systems opens large possibilities for driving materials far from equilibrium toward new states. Moreover, ultra-short pulses of light make it possible to induce and to record photo-switching on a very short time-scale, opening the way to fascinating new functionalities. Among molecular materials, Fe(II) complexes exhibit an ultrafast spin-state transition during which the spin state of the complex switches from a low spin state (LS, S=0) to a high spin state (HS, S=2). The latter process is remarkable: it takes place within ~100 fs with a qu…
