Migration, and especially irregular migration, is a critical issue for border agencies and society in general. Migration-related situations and decisions are influenced by various factors, including the perceptions about migration routes and target countries. An improved understanding of such factors can be achieved by systematic automated analyses of media and social media channels, and the videos and images published in them. However, the multifaceted nature of migration and the variety of ways migration-related aspects are expressed in images and videos make the finding and automated analysis of migration-related multimedia content a challenging task. We propose a novel approach that effectively bridges the gap between a substantiated domain understanding - encapsulated into a set of Migration-related semantic concepts - and the expression of such concepts in a video, by introducing an advanced video analysis and retrieval method for this purpose.
This paper gives a summary of the content-based Image Retrieval and Content-based Audio Retrieval, which are two parts of the Content-based Retrieval. Content-based Retrieval is the retrieval based on the features of the content. Generally, it is a way to extract features of the media data and find other data with the similar features from the database automatically. Content-based Retrieval can not only work on discrete media like texts, but also can be used on continuous media, such as video and audio.
Retrieval and content management are assumed to be mutually exclusive. In this paper we suggest that they need not be so. In the usual information retrieval scenario, some information about queries leading to a website (due to `hits' or `visits') is available to the server administrator of the concerned website. This information can used to better present the content on the website. Further, we suggest that some more information can be shared by the retrieval system with the content provider. This will enable the content provider (any website) to have a more dynamic presentation of the content…
Three approaches to content-and-structure XML retrieval are analysed in this paper: first by using Zettair, a full-text information retrieval system; second by using eXist, a native XML database, and third by using a hybrid XML retrieval system that uses eXist to produce the final answers from likely relevant articles retrieved by Zettair. INEX 2003 content-and-structure topics can be classified in two categories: the first retrieving full articles as final answers, and the second retrieving more specific elements within articles as final answers. We show that for both topic categories our ini…
The explosive increase and ubiquitous accessibility of visual data on the Web have led to the prosperity of research activity in image search or retrieval. With the ignorance of visual content as a ranking clue, methods with text search techniques for visual retrieval may suffer inconsistency between the text words and visual content. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR), which makes use of the representation of visual content to identify relevant images, has attracted sustained attention in recent two decades. Such a problem is challenging due to the intention gap and the semantic gap problem…
Content-based multimedia information retrieval is an interesting research area since it allows retrieval based on inherent characteristic of multimedia objects. For example retrieval based on visual characteristics such as colour, shapes or textures of objects in images or retrieval based on spatial relationships among objects in the media (images or video clips). This paper reviews some work done in image and video retrieval and then proposes an integrated model that can handle images and video clips uniformly. Using this model retrieval on images or video clips can be done based on the same …
The technological transformation and automation of digital content delivery has revolutionized the media industry. Advertising landscape is gradually shifting its traditional media forms to the emergent of Internet advertising. In this paper, the types of internet advertising to be discussed on are contextual and sponsored search ads. These types of advertising have the central challenge of finding the best match between a given context and a suitable advertisement, through a principled method. Furthermore, there are four main players that exist in the Internet advertising ecosystem: users, ad…
At present, the de-facto standard for providing contents in the Internet is the World Wide Web. A technology, which is now emerging on the Web, is Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). CBIR applies methods and algorithms from computer science to analyse and index images based on their visual content. Mobile agents push the flexibility of distributed systems to their limits since not only computations are dynamically distributed but also the code that performs them. The current commercial applet-based methodologies for accessing image database systems offer limited flexibility, scalability and …
In this paper, we present the efficient content based image retrieval systems which employ the color, texture and shape information of images to facilitate the retrieval process. For efficient feature extraction, we extract the color, texture and shape feature of images automatically using edge detection which is widely used in signal processing and image compression. For facilitated the speedy retrieval we are implements the antipole-tree algorithm for indexing the images.

User-machine interaction is important for spoken content retrieval. For text content retrieval, the user can easily scan through and select on a list of retrieved item. This is impossible for spoken content retrieval, because the retrieved items are difficult to show on screen. Besides, due to the high degree of uncertainty for speech recognition, the retrieval results can be very noisy. One way to counter such difficulties is through user-machine interaction. The machine can take different actions to interact with the user to obtain better retrieval results before showing to the user. The sui…
The digital image data is rapidly expanding in quantity and heterogeneity. The traditional information retrieval techniques does not meet the user's demand, so there is need to develop an efficient system for content based image retrieval. Content based image retrieval means retrieval of images from database on the basis of visual features of image like as color, texture etc. In our proposed method feature are extracted after applying Phong shading on input image. Phong shading, flattering out the dull surfaces of the image The features are extracted using color, texture & edge density methods…
This paper presents a procedure to retrieve subsets of relevant documents from large text collections for Content Analysis, e.g. in social sciences. Document retrieval for this purpose needs to take account of the fact that analysts often cannot describe their research objective with a small set of key terms, especially when dealing with theoretical or rather abstract research interests. Instead, it is much easier to define a set of paradigmatic documents which reflect topics of interest as well as targeted manner of speech. Thus, in contrast to classic information retrieval tasks we employ ma…
In this paper, we propose a novel content based-image retrieval scheme allowing the mixed use of encrypted and plain images for the first time. In the proposed scheme, images are encrypted by a block-scrambling method developed for encryption-then-compression (EtC) systems. The encrypted images, referred to as EtC images, can be compressed with JPEG, as well as for plain images. Image descriptors used for the proposed retrieval is designed to avoid the effect of image encryption. As a result, the use of EtC images and the descriptors allows us to carry out retrieval of both encrypted images an…
The growth of multimedia collections - in terms of size, heterogeneity, and variety of media types - necessitates systems that are able to conjointly deal with several forms of media, especially when it comes to searching for particular objects. However, existing retrieval systems are organized in silos and treat different media types separately. As a consequence, retrieval across media types is either not supported at all or subject to major limitations. In this paper, we present vitrivr, a content-based multimedia information retrieval stack. As opposed to the keyword search approach impleme…
Existing video indexing and retrieval methods on popular web-based multimedia sharing websites are based on user-provided sparse tagging. This paper proposes a very specific way of searching for video clips, based on the content of the video. We present our work on Content-based Video Indexing and Retrieval using the Correspondence-Latent Dirichlet Allocation (corr-LDA) probabilistic framework. This is a model that provides for auto-annotation of videos in a database with textual descriptors, and brings the added benefit of utilizing the semantic relations between the content of the video and …
Visual media has always been the most enjoyed way of communication. From the advent of television to the modern day hand held computers, we have witnessed the exponential growth of images around us. Undoubtedly it's a fact that they carry a lot of information in them which needs be utilized in an effective manner. Hence intense need has been felt to efficiently index and store large image collections for effective and on- demand retrieval. For this purpose low-level features extracted from the image contents like color, texture and shape has been used. Content based image retrieval systems emp…
In this industry talk at ECIR 2022, we illustrate how we approach the main challenges from large scale cross-domain content-based image retrieval using a cascade method and a combination of our visual search and classification capabilities. Specifically, we present a system that is able to handle the scale of the data for e-commerce usage and the cross-domain nature of the query and gallery image pools. We showcase the approach applied in real-world e-commerce snap and search use case and its impact on ranking and latency performance.
We share the implementation details and testing results for video retrieval system based exclusively on features extracted by convolutional neural networks. We show that deep learned features might serve as universal signature for semantic content of video useful in many search and retrieval tasks. We further show that graph-based storage structure for video index allows to efficiently retrieving the content with complicated spatial and temporal search queries.
This paper functions as a tutorial for individuals interested to enter the field of information retrieval but wouldn't know where to begin from. It describes two fundamental yet efficient image retrieval techniques, the first being k - nearest neighbors (knn) and the second support vector machines(svm). The goal is to provide the reader with both the theoretical and practical aspects in order to acquire a better understanding. Along with this tutorial we have also developed the equivalent software1 using the MATLAB environment in order to illustrate the techniques, so that the reader can have …
Content-based image retrieval has seen astonishing progress over the past decade, especially for the task of retrieving images of the same object that is depicted in the query image. This scenario is called instance or object retrieval and requires matching fine-grained visual patterns between images. Semantics, however, do not play a crucial role. This brings rise to the question: Do the recent advances in instance retrieval transfer to more generic image retrieval scenarios? To answer this question, we first provide a brief overview of the most relevant milestones of instance retrieval. We t…

Rapid increase of digitized document give birth to high demand of document image retrieval. While conventional document image retrieval approaches depend on complex OCR-based text recognition and text similarity detection, this paper proposes a new content-based approach, in which more attention is paid to features extraction and fusion. In the proposed approach, multiple features of document images are extracted by different CNN models. After that, the extracted CNN features are reduced and fused into weighted average feature. Finally, the document images are ranked based on feature similarit…
BERT-based re-ranking and dense retrieval (DR) systems have been shown to improve search effectiveness for spoken content retrieval (SCR). However, both methods can still show a reduction in effectiveness when using ASR transcripts in comparison to accurate manual transcripts. We find that a known-item search task on the How2 dataset of spoken instruction videos shows a reduction in mean reciprocal rank (MRR) scores of 10-14%. As a potential method to reduce this disparity, we investigate the use of semi-supervised ASR transcripts and N-best ASR transcripts to mitigate ASR errors for spoken se…

This paper provides a comprehensive survey on recent technology used in the area of content based face image retrieval. Nowadays digital devices and photo sharing sites are getting more popularity, large human face photos are available in database. Multiple types of facial features are used to represent discriminality on large scale human facial image database. Searching and mining of facial images are challenging problems and important…
Query images presented to content-based image retrieval systems often have various different interpretations, making it difficult to identify the search objective pursued by the user. We propose a technique for overcoming this ambiguity, while keeping the amount of required user interaction at a minimum. To achieve this, the neighborhood of the query image is divided into coherent clusters from which the user may choose the relevant ones. A novel feedback integration technique is then employed to re-rank the entire database with regard to both the user feedback and the original query. We evalu…
Image classification is an enthusiastic research field where large amount of image data is classified into various classes based on their visual contents. Researchers have presented various low-level features-based techniques for classifying images into different categories. However, efficient and effective classification and retrieval is still a challenging problem due to complex nature of visual contents. In addition, the traditional information retrieval techniques are vulnerable to security risks, making it easy for attackers to retrieve personal visual contents such as patients records an…

This paper describes PinView, a content-based image retrieval system that exploits implicit relevance feedback collected during a search session. PinView contains several novel methods to infer the intent of the user. From relevance feedback, such as eye movements or pointer clicks, and visual features of images, PinView learns a similarity metric between images which depends on the current interests of the user. It then retrieves images with a specialized online learning algorithm that balances the tradeoff between exploring new images and exploiting the already inferred interests of the user…
The advent of large scale multimedia databases has led to great challenges in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Even though CBIR is considered an emerging field of research, however it constitutes a strong background for new methodologies and systems implementations. Therefore, many research contributions are focusing on techniques enabling higher image retrieval accuracy while preserving low level of computational complexity. Image retrieval based on texture features is receiving special attention because of the omnipresence of this visual feature in most real-world images. This paper hig…

The objective of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) methods is essentially to extract, from large (image) databases, a specified number of images similar in visual and semantic content to a so-called query image. To bridge the semantic gap that exists between the representation of an image by low-level features (namely, colour, shape, texture) and its high-level semantic content as perceived by humans, CBIR systems typically make use of the relevance feedback (RF) mechanism. RF iteratively incorporates user-given inputs regarding the relevance of retrieved images, to improve retrieval effici…
We propose a multiple instance learning approach to content-based retrieval of classroom video for the purpose of supporting human assessing the learning environment. The key element of our approach is a mapping between the semantic concepts of the assessment system and features of the video that can be measured using techniques from the fields of computer vision and speech analysis. We report on a formative experiment in content-based video retrieval involving trained experts in the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, a widely used framework for assessment and improvement of learning environ…

Content-based medical image retrieval is an important diagnostic tool that improves the explainability of computer-aided diagnosis systems and provides decision making support to healthcare professionals. Medical imaging data, such as radiology images, are often multimorbidity; a single sample may have more than one pathology present. As such, image retrieval systems for the medical domain must be designed for the multi-label scenario. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-label metric learning method that can be used for both classification and content-based image retrieval. In this way, ou…
The aim of a Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system, also known as Query by Image Content (QBIC), is to help users to retrieve relevant images based on their contents. CBIR technologies provide a method to find images in large databases by using unique descriptors from a trained image. The image descriptors include texture, color, intensity and shape of the object inside an image. Several feature-extraction techniques viz., Average RGB, Color Moments, Co-occurrence, Local Color Histogram, Global Color Histogram and Geometric Moment have been critically compared in this paper. However, ind…
The scalability, as well as the effectiveness, of the different Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) approaches proposed in literature, is today an important research issue. Given the wealth of images on the Web, CBIR systems must in fact leap towards Web-scale datasets. In this paper, we report on our experience in building a test collection of 100 million images, with the corresponding descriptive features, to be used in experimenting new scalable techniques for similarity searching, and comparing their results. In the context of the SAPIR (Search on Audio-visual content using Peer-to-peer I…

Compression-based similarity measures are effectively employed in applications on diverse data types with a basically parameter-free approach. Nevertheless, there are problems in applying these techniques to medium-to-large datasets which have been seldom addressed. This paper proposes a similarity measure based on compression with dictionaries, the Fast Compression Distance (FCD), which reduces the complexity of these methods, without degradations in performance. On its basis a content-based color image retrieval system is defined, which can be compared to state-of-the-art methods based on in…
The typical content-based image retrieval problem is to find images within a database that are similar to a given query image. This paper presents a solution to a different problem, namely that of content based sub-image retrieval, i.e., finding images from a database that contains another image. Note that this is different from finding a region in a (segmented) image that is similar to another image region given as a query. We present a technique for CBsIR that explores relevance feedback, i.e., the user's input on intermediary results, in order to improve retrieval efficiency. Upon modeling …

One important challenge in modern Content-Based Medical Image Retrieval (CBMIR) approaches is represented by the semantic gap, related to the complexity of the medical knowledge. Among the methods that are able to close this gap in CBMIR, the use of medical thesauri/ontologies has interesting perspectives due to the possibility of accessing on-line updated relevant webservices and to extract real-time medical semantic structured information. The CBMIR approach proposed in this paper uses the Unified Medical Language System's (UMLS) Metathesaurus to perform a semantic indexing and fusion of med…
The amount of audio data available on public websites is growing rapidly, and an efficient mechanism for accessing the desired data is necessary. We propose a content-based audio retrieval method that can retrieve a target audio that is similar to but slightly different from the query audio by introducing auxiliary textual information which describes the difference between the query and target audio. While the range of conventional content-based audio retrieval is limited to audio that is similar to the query audio, the proposed method can adjust the retrieval range by adding an embedding of t…

Image is usually taken for expressing some kinds of emotions or purposes, such as love, celebrating Christmas. There is another better way that combines the image and relevant song to amplify the expression, which has drawn much attention in the social network recently. Hence, the automatic selection of songs should be expected. In this paper, we propose to retrieve semantic relevant songs just by an image query, which is named as the image2song problem. Motivated by the requirements of establishing correlation in semantic/content, we build a semantic-based song retrieval framework, which lear…
Content-based fashion image retrieval (CBFIR) has been widely used in our daily life for searching fashion images or items from online platforms. In e-commerce purchasing, the CBFIR system can retrieve fashion items or products with the same or comparable features when a consumer uploads a reference image, image with text, sketch or visual stream from their daily life. This lowers the CBFIR system reliance on text and allows for a more accurate and direct searching of the desired fashion product. Considering recent developments, CBFIR still has limits when it comes to visual searching in the r…
Even though it has extensively been shown that retrieval specific training of deep neural networks is beneficial for nearest neighbor image search quality, most of these models are trained and tested in the domain of landmarks images. However, some applications use images from various other domains and therefore need a network with good generalization properties - a general-purpose CBIR model. To the best of our knowledge, no testing protocol has so far been introduced to benchmark models with respect to general image retrieval quality. After analyzing popular image retrieval test sets we deci…

YouTube has 400 hours of video uploaded every minute and many million images are browsed on Instagram, Facebook, etc. Inspired by recent advances in the field of deep learning and success that it has gained on various problems like image captioning and, machine translation , word2vec , skip thoughts, etc, w…
In this work, we analyze a pseudo-relevance retrieval method based on the results of web search engines. By enriching topics with text data from web search engine result pages and linked contents, we train topic-specific and cost-efficient classifiers that can be used to search test collections for relevant documents. Building upon attempts initially made at TREC Common Core 2018 by Grossman and Cormack, we address questions of system performance over time considering different search engines, queries, and test collections. Our experimental results show how and to which extent the considered c…
