This paper aims at proving the local boundedness and continuity of solutions of the heat equation in the context of Dirichlet spaces under some rather weak additional assumptions. We consider symmetric local regular Dirichlet forms which satisfy mild assumptions concerning (a) the existence of cut-off functions, (b) a local ultracontractivity hypothesis, and (c) a weak off-diagonal upper bound. In this setting, local weak solutions of the heat equation, and their time derivatives, are shown to be locally bounded; they are further locally continuous, if the semigroup admits a locally continuous density function. Applications of the results are provided including discussion on the existence of locally bounded heat kernel; $L^\infty$ structure results for ancient solutions of the heat equation. The last section presents a special case where the $L^\infty$ off-diagonal upper bound follows from the ultracontractivity property of the semigroup. This paper is a continuation of [7].
In a previous paper we considered a class of infinitely degenerate quasilinear equations and derived a priori bounds for high order derivatives of solutions in terms of the Lipschitz norm. We now show that it is possible to obtain bounds just in terms of the supremum norm for a further subclass of such equations, and we apply the resulting estimates to prove that continuous weak solutions are necessarily smooth. We also obtain existence, uniqueness and interior regularity of solutions for the Dirichlet problem with continuous boundary data.
We establish improved hypoelliptic estimates on the solutions of kinetic transport equations, using a suitable decomposition of the phase space. Our main result shows that the relative compactness in all variables of a bounded family $f_λ(x,v)\in L^p$ satisfying some appropriate transport relation $$v\cdot\nabla_x f_λ= (1-Δ_x)^\fracβ{2}(1-Δ_v)^\fracα{2}g_λ$$ may be inferred solely from its compactness in $v$. This method is introduced as an alternative to the lack of known suitable averaging lemmas in $L^1$ when the right-hand side of the transport equation has very low regularity, due to an e…
We study the Dirichlet problem in Lipschitz domains and with boundary data in Besov spaces, for divergence form strongly elliptic systems of arbitrary order, with bounded, complex-valued coefficients. Our main result gives a sharp condition on the local mean oscillations of the coefficients of the differential operator and the unit normal to the boundary (which is automatically satisfied if these functions belong to space VMO) guaranteeing that the solution operator associated with this problem is an isomorphism.
The goal of this paper is to study the Dirichlet eigenvalues of bounded domains $Ω\subset Ω'$. With a local spectral stability requirement on $Ω$, we show that the difference of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $Ω'$ and $Ω$ is explicitly controlled from above in terms of the first eigenvalue of $Ω'\setminus\barΩ$ and of geometric constants depending on the inner domain $Ω$. In particular, $Ω'$ can be an arbitrary bounded domain.
We consider a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\rm R}^d$ whose boundary $Γ$ has a finite $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Then we define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $D_0$ on $L_2(Γ)$ by form methods. The operator $-D_0$ is self-adjoint and generates a contractive $C_0$-semigroup $S = (S_t)_{t > 0}$ on $L_2(Γ)$. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_t$ as $t \to \infty$ is related to properties of the trace of functions in $H^1(Ω)$ which $Ω$ may or may not have.
In this paper we study existence and spectral properties for weak solutions of Neumann and Dirichlet problems associated to second order linear degenerate elliptic partial differential operators $X$, with rough coefficients of the form $$X=-\text{div}(P\nabla )+{\bf HR}+{\bf S^\prime G} +F$$ in a geometric homogeneous space setting where the $n\times n$ matrix function $P=P(x)$ is allowed to degenerate. We give a maximum principle for weak solutions of $Xu\leq 0$ and follow this with a result describing a relationship between compact projection of the degenerate Sobolev space $QH^{1,p}$ into $…
Weakly harmonic maps from a domain $Ω$ (the upper half-space $\Rd$ or a bounded $C^{1,α}$ domain, $α\in (0,1]$) into a smooth closed manifold are studied. Prescribing small Dirichlet data in either of the classes $L^{\infty}(\partialΩ)$ or $BMO(\partialΩ)$, we establish solvability of the resulting boundary value problems by means of a nonvariational method. As a by-product, solutions are shown to be locally smooth, $C^{\infty}_{loc}$. Moreover, we show that boundary data can be chosen large in the underlying topologies if $Ω$ is smooth and bounded by perturbing strictly stable smooth harmonic…
We settle the issue of well-posedness for the Dirichlet problem for a higher order elliptic system ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ with complex-valued, bounded, measurable coefficients in a Lipschitz domain $Ω$, with boundary data in Besov spaces. The main hypothesis under which our principal result is established is in the nature of best possible and requires that, at small scales, the mean oscillations of the unit normal to $\partialΩ$ and of the coefficients of the differential operator ${\mathcal L}(x,D_x)$ are not too large.
In this paper we establish new quantitative stability estimates with respect to domain perturbations for all the eigenvalues of both the Neumann and the Dirichlet Laplacian. Our main results follow from an abstract lemma stating that it is actually sufficient to provide an estimate on suitable projection operators. Whereas this lemma could be applied under different regularity assumptions on the domain, here we use it to estimate the spectrum in Lipschitz and in so-called Reifenberg-flat domains. Our argument also relies on suitable extension techniques and on an estimate on the decay of the e…
We report on recent results and a new line of research at the crossroad of two major theories in the analysis of partial differential equations. The celebrated De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory shows H{ö}lder estimates and the Harnack inequality for uniformly elliptic or parabolic equations with rough coefficients in divergence form. The theory of hypoellipticity of H{ö}rmander shows, under general "bracket" conditions, the regularity of solutions to partial differential equations combining first and second order derivative operators when ellipticity fails in some directions. We discuss recent exten…
This article gives an existence theory for weak solutions of second order non-elliptic linear Dirichlet problems of the form {eqnarray} \nabla'P(x)\nabla u +{\bf HR}u+{\bf S'G}u +Fu &=& f+{\bf T'g} \textrm{in}Θu&=&ϕ\textrm{on}\partial Θ.{eqnarray} The principal part $ξ'P(x)ξ$ of the above equation is assumed to be comparable to a quadratic form ${\cal Q}(x,ξ) = ξ'Q(x)ξ$ that may vanish for non-zero $ξ\in\mathbb{R}^n$. This is achieved using techniques of functional analysis applied to the degenerate Sobolev spaces $QH^1(Θ)=W^{1,2}(Ω,Q)$ and $QH^1_0(Θ)=W^{1,2}_0(Θ,Q)$ as defined in recent work …
This work is a continuation of [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted]; it deals with rough boundaries in the simplified context of a Poisson equation. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the periodic microscopic perturbation of a flat edge on one side and natural homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions are applied on the inlet/outlet of the domain. To prevent oscillations on the Neumann-like boundaries, we introduce a microscopic vertical corrector defined in a rough quarter-plane. In [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted] we studied a priori estimates in this setting;…
Stents are medical devices designed to modify blood flow in aneurysm sacs, in order to prevent their rupture. Some of them can be considered as a locally periodic rough boundary. In order to approximate blood flow in arteries and vessels of the cardio-vascular system containing stents, we use multi-scale techniques to construct boundary layers and wall laws. Simplifying the flow we turn to consider a 2-dimensional Poisson problem that conserves essential features related to the rough boundary. Then, we investigate convergence of boundary layer approximations and the corresponding wall laws in …
In this paper we consider second order parabolic partial differential equations subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition on smooth domains. We establish weighted $L_{q}$-maximal regularity in weighted Triebel-Lizorkin spaces for such parabolic problems with inhomogeneous boundary data. The weights that we consider are power weights in time and space, and yield flexibility in the optimal regularity of the initial-boundary data, allow to avoid compatibility conditions at the boundary and provide a smoothing effect. In particular, we can treat rough inhomogeneous boundary data.
We establish the existence and uniqueness, in bounded as well as unbounded Lipschitz type cylinders of the forms $U_X\times V_{Y,t}$ and $Ω\times \mathbb R^{m}\times \mathbb R$, of weak solutions to Cauchy-Dirichlet problems for the strongly degenerate parabolic operator \[ \mathcal{L}:= \nabla_X\cdot(A(X,Y,t)\nabla_X)+X\cdot\nabla_Y-\partial_t, \] assuming that $A=A(X,Y,t)=\{a_{i,j}(X,Y,t)\}$ is a real $m\times m$-matrix valued, measurable function such that $A(X,Y,t)$ is symmetric, bounded and uniformly elliptic. Subsequently we solve the continuous Dirichlet problem and establish the repres…
This paper is devoted to the well-posedness of the stationary $3$d Stokes-Coriolis system set in a half-space with rough bottom and Dirichlet data which does not decrease at space infinity. Our system is a linearized version of the Ekman boundary layer system. We look for a solution of infinite energy in a space of Sobolev regularity. Following an idea of Gérard-Varet and Masmoudi, the general strategy is to reduce the problem to a bumpy channel bounded in the vertical direction thanks a transparent boundary condition involving a Dirichlet to Neumann operator. Our analysis emphasizes some stro…
In this paper we consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a smooth domain. We prove that it has a bounded $H^\infty$-calculus on weighted $L^p$-spaces for power weights which fall outside the classical class of $A_p$-weights. Furthermore, we characterize the domain of the operator and derive several consequences on elliptic and parabolic regularity. In particular, we obtain a new maximal regularity result for the heat equation with rough inhomogeneous boundary data.
Given a domain above a Lipschitz graph, we establish solvability results for strongly elliptic second-order systems in divergence-form, allowed to have lower-order (drift) terms, with $L^p$-boundary data for $p$ near $2$ (more precisely, in an interval of the form $\big(2-\varepsilon,\frac{2(n-1)}{n-2}+\varepsilon\big)$ for some small $\varepsilon>0$). The main novel aspect of our result is that the coefficients of the operator do not have to be constant, or have very high regularity, instead they will satisfy a natural Carleson condition that has appeared first in the scalar case. A significa…
We study global regularity for solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations of the form $÷\A(x,u,\nabla u) = ÷\F $ in rough domains $Ω$ in $\R^n$ with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The vector field $\A$ is assumed to be continuous in $u$, and its growth in $\nabla u$ is like that of the $p$-Laplace operator. We establish global gradient estimates in weighted Morrey spaces for weak solutions $u$ to the equation under the Reifenberg flat condition for $Ω$, a small BMO condition in $x$ for $\A$, and an optimal condition for the Dirichlet boundary data.
We show that the knowledge of Dirichlet to Neumann map for rough $A$ and $q$ in $(-Δ)^m +A\cdot D +q$ for $m \geq 2$ for a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 3$ determines $A$ and $q$ uniquely. This unique identifiability is proved via construction of complex geometrical optics solutions with sufficient decay of remainder terms, by using property of products of functions in Sobolev spaces.
Consider the two-dimensional inverse elastic wave scattering by an infinite rough surface with a Dirichlet boundary condition. A non-interative sampling technique is proposed for detecting the rough surface by taking elastic wave measurements on a bounded line segment above the surface, based on reconstructing a modified near-field equation associated with a special surface, which generalized our pervious work for the Helmholtz equation (SIAM J. IMAGING. SCI. 10(3)(2017), 1579-1602) to the Navier equation. Several numerical examples are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the invers…
H{ö}lder regularity of parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions and application to reaction-diffusion and reaction-cross-diffusion systems
Existence and uniqueness of the scattering solutions is proved for a class of bounded rough obstacles which is much larger than the class of Lipschitz obstacles. Integral equations method is not used. The approach is based on the representation theorem for selfadjoint operators via closed symmetric quadratic forms and on the limiting absorption principles. For the Dirichlet boundary condition no assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed, for the Neumann boundary condition and the Robin boundary condition some assumptions on the smoothness of the boundary are needed.
We prove that the $L^{p'}$-solvability of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for an elliptic operator $L=-\operatorname{div}A\nabla$ with real and merely bounded coefficients is equivalent to the $L^{p'}$-solvability of the Poisson Dirichlet problem $Lw=H-\operatorname{div} F$, which is defined in terms of an $L^{p'}$ estimate on the non-tangential maximal function, assuming that $\operatorname{dist}(\cdot, \partial Ω) H$ and $F$ lie in certain $L^{p'}$-Carleson-type spaces, and that the domain $Ω\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq2$, satisfies the corkscrew condition and has $n$-Ahlfors regular bo…
We prove continuity for bounded weak solutions of a nonlinear nonlocal parabolic type equation associated to a Dirichlet form with a rough kernel. The equation is allowed to be singular at the level zero, and solutions may change sign. If the nonlinearity in the equation does not oscillate too much at the origin, the solution is proved to be moreover Hölder continuous. The results are new even when the Dirichlet form is the one corresponding to the fractional Laplacian.
We investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for solutions of rough parabolic equations of the form $\partial _tu-A_tu-f=(\dot X_t(x) \cdot \nabla + \dot Y_t(x))u$ on $[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^d.$ To do so, we introduce a concept of "differential rough driver", which comes with a counterpart of the usual controlled paths spaces in rough paths theory, built on the Sobolev spaces $W^{k,p}.$ We also define a natural notion of geometricity in this context, and show how it relates to a product formula for controlled paths. In the case of transport noise (i.e.\ when $Y=0$), we use this framework…
The paper makes use of recent results in the theory of Banach lattices and positive operators to deal with abstract semilinear equations. The aim is to work with minimal or no regularity conditions on the boundary of the domains, where the usual arguments based on maximum principles do not apply. A key result is an application of Kato's inequality to prove a comparison theorem for eigenfunctions that only requires interior regularity and avoids the use of the Hopf boundary maximum principle. We demonstrate the theory on an abstract degenerate logistic equation by proving the existence, uniquen…
We consider nonlinear Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck type equations of the form \begin{equation}\label{abeqn} (\partial_t+X\cdot\nabla_Y)u=\nabla_X\cdot(A(\nabla_X u,X,Y,t)). \end{equation} The function $A=A(ξ,X,Y,t):\R^m\times\R^m\times\R^m\times\R\to\R^m$ is assumed to be continuous with respect to $ξ$, and measurable with respect to $X,Y$ and $t$. $A=A(ξ,X,Y,t)$ is allowed to be nonlinear but with linear growth. We establish higher integrability and local boundedness of weak sub-solutions, weak Harnack and Harnack inequalities, and H{ö}lder continuity with quantitative estimates. In addition we e…
We establish $L_{q,p}$-estimates and solvability for mixed Dirichlet-conormal problems for parabolic equations in a cylindrical Reifenberg-flat domain with a rough time-dependent separation.
We show in two dimensions that measuring Dirichlet data for the conductivity equation on an open subset of the boundary and, roughly speaking, Neumann data in slightly larger set than the complement uniquely determines the conductivity on a simply connected domain. The proof is reduced to show a similar result for the Schrödinger equation. Using Carleman estimates with degenerate weights we construct appropriate complex geometrical optics solutions to prove the results.
We consider a natural class of $\mathbf{R}^d$-valued one-dimensional stochastic PDEs driven by space-time white noise that is formally invariant under the action of the diffeomorphism group on $\mathbf{R}^d$. This class contains in particular the KPZ equation, the multiplicative stochastic heat equation, the additive stochastic heat equation, and rough Burgers-type equations. We exhibit a one-parameter family of solution theories with the following properties: - For all SPDEs in our class for which a solution was previously available, every solution in our family coincides with the previously …
We will look at reaction-diffusion type equations of the following type, $$\partial^β_tV(t,x)=-(-Δ)^{α/2} V(t,x)+I^{1-β}_t[V(t,x)^{1+η}].$$ We first study the equation on the whole space by making sense of it via an integral equation. Roughly speaking, we will show that when $0<η\leqη_c$, there is no global solution other than the trivial one while for $η>η_c$, non-trivial global solutions do exist. We also study the equation on a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary condition and show that the presence of the time derivative induces a significant change in the behaviour of the solution.
We propose a definition of the Dirichlet energy (which is roughly speaking the integral of the square of the gradient) for mappings mu : Omega -> (P(D), W\_2) defined over a subset Omega of R^p and valued in the space P(D) of probability measures on a compact convex subset D of R^q endowed with the quadratic Wasserstein distance. Our definition relies on a straightforward generalization of the Benamou-Brenier formula (already introduced by Brenier) but is also equivalent to the definition of Koorevaar, Schoen and Jost as limit of approximate Dirichlet energies, and to the definition of Reshetn…
Consider the $3$-d primitive equations in a layer domain $Ω=G \times (-h,0)$, $G=(0,1)^2$, subject to mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions at $z=-h$ and $z=0$, respectively, and the periodic lateral boundary condition. It is shown that this equation is globally, strongly well-posed for arbitrary large data of the form $a=a_1 + a_2$, where $a_1\in C(\overline{G};L^p(-h,0))$, $a_2\in L^{\infty}(G;L^p(-h,0))$ for $p>3$, and where $a_1$ is periodic in the horizontal variables and $a_2$ is sufficiently small. In particular, no differentiability condition on the data is assumed. The appro…
