DC microgrids are prone to small-signal instabilities due to the presence of tightly regulated loads. This paper develops a decentralized stability certificate which is capable of certifying the small-signal stability of an islanded DC network containing such loads. Utilizing a novel homotopy approach, the proposed standards ensure that no system eigenmodes are able to cross into the unstable right half plane for a continuous range of controller gain levels. The resulting "standards" can be applied to variety of grid components which meet the specified, but non-unique, criteria. These standards thus take a step towards offering plug-and-play operability of DC microgrids. The proposed theorems are explicitly illustrated and numerically validated on multiple DC microgrid test-cases containing both buck and boost converter dynamics.
This paper investigates the theory of resilience and stability in multi-microgrid networks. We derive new sufficient conditions to guarantee small-signal stability of multi-microgrids in both lossless and lossy networks. The new stability certificate for lossy networks only requires local information, thus leads to a fully distributed control scheme. Moreover, we study the impact of network topology, interface parameters (virtual inertia and damping), and local measurements (voltage magnitude and reactive power) on the stability of the system. The proposed stability certificate suggests the ex…
Microgrids offer flexibility in power generation in a way of using multiple renewable energy sources. In the past few years, microgrids become a very active research area in terms of design and control strategies. Most of the microgrids use DC/DC converters to connect renewable energy sources to the load. In this paper, the simulation model of a DC microgrid with three different energy sources (Lithium-ion battery (LIB), photovoltaic (PV) array, and fuel cell) and external variant power load is built with MATLAB/Simulink and the simulative results show that the stability of DC microgrid can be…

RES is changing the structure of electrical systems day by day. They have provided to supply the loads and have distributed systems. The concept of Microgrid has been defined by connecting distributed generation sources and load which can run in islanding and interconnected modes. In this research, solar and fuel cell are used as a source for providing variable loads. They try to deliver defined p…
Mobile energy storage systems (MESS) offer great operational flexibility to enhance the resiliency of distribution systems in an emergency condition. The optimal placement and sizing of those units are pivotal for quickly restoring the curtailed loads. In this paper, we propose a model for load restoration in a microgrid while concurrently optimizing the MESS routes required for the same. The model is formulated as a mixed integer second order cone program by considering the state of charge and evolution of the lower and upper bounds of battery capacities. Simulation results tested on the IEEE…
A problem of load balancing in isolated DC microgrids is considered in this paper. Here, a DC load is fed by multiple heterogenous DC sources, each of which is connected to the load via a boost converter. The gains of the DCC's provide for a means to control the division of load current amongst the DC sources. The primary objective of the control scheme is to minimise the total losses in the network, while maintaining the output voltage within a desired range, serving the load current demand and adhering to VI-characteristics of the power sources. Under assumptions of concavity/monotonocity/pi…
In this work, we present a novel consensus-based secondary control scheme for current sharing and voltage balancing in DC microgrids, composed of distributed generation units, dynamic RLC lines, and nonlinear ZIE (constant impedance, constant current, and exponential) loads. Situated atop a primary voltage control layer, our secondary controllers have a distributed structure, and utilize information exchanged over a communication network to compute necessary control actions. Besides showing that the desired objectives are always attained in steady state, we deduce sufficient conditions for the…
Distributed energy storage systems (ESSs) can be efficiently leveraged for load restoration (LR) for a microgrid (MG) in island mode. When the ESSs are owned by third parties rather than the MG operator (MGO), the ESS operating setpoints may be considered as private information of their respective owners. Therefore, efforts must be put forth to avoid the disclosure through adversarial analysis of load setpoints. In his paper, we consider a scenario where LR takes place in a MG by determining load and ESS power injections through the solution of an AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF) problem. Since …

This paper presents a load switching group based energy management system (LSG-EMS) for operating microgrids on a distribution feeder powered by one or multiple grid-forming distributed energy resources. Loads on a distribution feeder are divided into load switching groups that can be remotely switched on and off. The LSG-EMS algorithm, formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem, has an objective function of maximizing the served loads while minimizing the total number of switching actions. A new set of topology constraints are developed for allowing multiple microgrids to…
In case of high impact low probability events, in order to restore the critical loads of the distribution network as much as possible, it is necessary to employ all available resources such as microgrids and distributed generations. This paper presents a two-stage method for critical load restoration after an extreme event utilizing the coordination of all available distributed generations, microgrids, and demand response programs. In the first stage, the post-disaster reconfiguration of the network is determined, and in the second stage, the demand response outputs of the responsive loads and…
Unbalanced and nonlinear loads connected to microgrids (MG) with local distributed energy resources (DERs) are two of the leading causes of power quality problems. Nonlinearloads introduce voltage and current harmonics, and single-phase loads can cause voltage and current imbalances in a three-phase network. This paper presents a hierarchical control scheme for voltage-controlled photovoltaic (PV) inverters with unbalanced and nonlinear loads in micro-grids. The hierarchical control consists of primary control and voltage compensation control(VCC) and a DC voltage regulator (VR). The primary c…
Inverter-interfaced microgrids results in challenges when designing protection systems. Traditional time-overcurrent, admittance, and differential protection methods are unsuitable on account of lack of fault current, excessively short lines, or a prohibitive number of protective devices needing to be installed. Current practice is to force all inverters to shut down during fault conditions, weakening resilience and reducing reliability. Dynamic state estimation (DSE), which has been explored for both line protection and load bus protection before, is a potential solution to these challenges t…
This paper presents a novel grid-forming voltage control strategy for a battery energy storage system to maintain balanced three-phase output voltages when serving unbalanced loads. A stationary reference frame ($αβ$) based control scheme is proposed to regulate positive-sequence and negative-sequence voltages. Compared with the conventional rotating reference frame ($dq$) based control scheme, the proposed scheme shows better dynamic performance. Then, we analyze the system zero-sequence network and propose adding a grounding transformer to the Y/Yg connected output transformer to further red…
We consider the problem of guaranteeing that the transient voltages and currents stay within prescribed bounds in Direct Current (DC) microgrids, when the controller does not have access to accurate system dynamics due to the load being unknown and/or time-varying. To achieve this, we propose an optimization based controller design using control barrier functions. We show that the proposed controller has a decentralized structure and is robust with respect to the uncertainty in the precise values of the system parameters, such as the load.
Microgrid (MG) system, which is composed of renewable resources with the utility grid, energy storage unit, electric vehicles, and loads, acts as a single controllable entity. To get efficient and low-cost energy, need to manage power flow within MG depending on renewable resources and load demand. This paper proposes an energy management system (EMS) for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) based on AC MG. The proposed EMS regulates power flow through the AC bus considering next-day solar irradiance prediction, tariff profile, and day-ahead load demand to minimize …
Conventionally, the dynamic state estimation of variables in power networks is performed based on the forecasting-aided model of bus voltages. This approach is effective in the stiff grids at the transmission level, where the bus voltages are less sensitive to variations of the load. However, in microgrids, bus voltages can fluctuate significantly under load changes, the forecasting-aided model may not sufficiently accurate. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a dynamic state estimation scheme for microgrids using the state-space model derived from differential equations of power netw…
Uncertainty in renewable energy generation and load consumption is a great challenge for microgrid operation, especially in islanded mode as the microgrid may be small in size and has limited flexible resources. In this paper, a multi-timescale, two-stage robust unit commitment and economic dispatch model is proposed to optimize the microgrid operation. The first stage is a combination of day-ahead hourly and real-time sub-hourly model, which means the day-ahead dispatch result must also satisfy the real-time condition at the same time. The second stage is to verify the feasibility of the day-…

Ensuring protective device coordination is critical to maintain the resilience and improve the reliability of large microgrids. Inverter-interfaced generation, however, poses significant challenges when designing protection systems. Traditional time-overcurrent protective devices are unsuitable on account of the lack of fault current. Present industry practice is to force all inverters to shut down during faults, which prevents large microgrids from operating in a resilient and reliable manner. Dynamic state estimation (DSE) has been proposed for line protection, and more recently for the prot…
The flexible power consumption feature of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) such as heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems makes them attractive targets for demand response (DR). TCLs possess a brief period where their power utilization can be altered without any significant impact on customer comfort level. This indicates TCLs are hidden potentials for providing ancillary services. This paper proposes a novel metric of demand response support time (DRST) for HVAC enabled demand response and a novel algorithm for the quantification of such HVAC-DR. The consumers' comf…
Typically, a large portion of microgrid generating capacity is from variable renewable resources that are greatly impacted by the environment and can be intermittent as well as stochastic. This would result in uncertainty of microgrid net-load, and negatively affect the grid reliability. A two-phase real-time energy management strategy for networked microgrid is proposed in this paper to address microgrid internal fluctuation internally, which enables a microgrid to become grid-friendly. The proposed strategy is based on coordination between the real-time dispatch (RTD) phase and the real-time…
The complexity arising in AC microgrids from multiple interacting distributed generation units (DGUs) with intermittent supply behavior requires local voltage-source inverters (VSIs) to be controlled in a distributed or decentralized manner at primary level. In (Strehle et al., 2019), we use passivity theory to design decentralized, plug-and-play voltage and frequency controllers for such VSIs. However, the stability analysis of the closed-loop system requires a load-connected topology, in contrast to real grids where loads are arbitrarily located. In this paper, we expand our former approach …
