State space geometry is obtained for the one dimensional Blume Emery Griffiths model and the associated scalar curvature(s) investigated for various parameter regimes, including the Blume-Capel limit and the Griffiths model limit. For the one-dimensional case two complementary geometries with their associated curvatures $R_m$ and $R_q$ are found which are related to the fluctuations in the two order parameters, namely the magnetic moment and the quadrupole moment. An excellent agreement is obtained in significant regions of the parameter space between the two curvatures and the two corresponding correlation lengths $ξ_1$ and $ξ_2$. The three dimensional scalar curvature $R_g$ is also found to efficiently encode interactions. The scaling function for the free energy near critical points and the tricritical point is obtained by making use of Ruppeiner's conjecture relating the inverse of the singular free energy to the thermodynamic scalar curvature.
In recent years, the unified theory of information and thermodynamics has been intensively discussed in the context of stochastic thermodynamics. The unified theory reveals that information theory would be useful to understand non-stationary dynamics of systems far from equilibrium. In this letter, we have found a new link between stochastic thermodynamics and information theory well known as information geometry. By applying this link, an information geometric inequality can be interpreted as a thermodynamic uncertainty relationship between speed and thermodynamic cost. We have numerically ap…
A generalized entropy arising in the context of superstatistics is obtained for an ideal gas. The curvature scalar associated to the thermodynamic space generated by this modified entropy is calculated using two formalisms of the geometric approach to thermodynamics. Using the curvature/interaction hypothesis of the geometric approach to thermodynamic geometry it is found that as a consequence of considering a generalized statistics, an effective interaction arises but the interaction is not enough to give a phase transition. This generalized entropy seems to be relevant in confinement or in s…
We study phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interaction on a Kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A histogram data analysis shows that a second order transition occurs in the model. From the analysis of obtained data, we can assume that next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a Kagome lattice excite the occurrence of a second order transition and unusual behavior of thermodynamic properties on the temperature dependence.
For classical discrete systems with constant composition (typically referred to substitutional alloys) under thermodynamically equilibrium state, macroscopic structure should in principle depend on temperature and many-body interaction through Boltzmann factor, exp(-bE). Despite this fact, our recently find that (i) thermodynamic average for structure can be characterized by a set of special microscopic state whose structure is independent of energy and temperature, and (ii) bidirectional-stability character for thermodynamic average between microscopic structure and potential energy surface i…
We present an exact derivation of the isobaric partition function of lattice hard rods with arbitrary nearest neighbor interactions. Free energy and all thermodynamics functions are derived accordingly and they written in a form that is a suitable for numerical implementation. As an application, we have considered lattice rods with pure hard core interactions, rods with long range gravitational attraction and finally a charged hard rods with charged boundaries (Bose gas), a model that is relevant for studying several phenomena such as charge regulation, ionic liquids near charged interfaces, a…
For classical discrete system under constant composition, we theoretically examine origin of nonlinearity in thermodynamic (so-called canonical) average w.r.t. many-body interactions, in terms of geometrical information in configuratin space. We clarify that nonlinearity essentially comes from deviation in configurational density of states (CDOS) before applying many-body interactions to the system, from multidimensional gaussian distribution. The present finding strongly suggest the significance to investigate how the deviation in CDOS bridges bidirectional stability relationships between equ…

We continue our study of the thermodynamic geometry of the spin one model from paper I by probing the state space geometry of the Blume Emery Griffiths (BEG) model, and its limiting case of the Blume Capel model, in their mean field approximation. By accounting for the stochastic variables involved we construct from the thermodynamic state space two complimentary two-dimensional geometries with curvatures $R_m$ and $R_q$ which are shown to encode correlations in the model's two order parameters, namely, the magnetization $m$ and the quadrupole moment $q$. The geometry is investigated in the ze…

We explore the thermodynamic geometry of a simple system that models the bistable dynamics of nucleic acid hairpins in single molecule force-extension experiments. Near equilibrium, optimal (minimum-dissipation) driving protocols are governed by a generalized linear response friction coefficient. Our analysis and simulations demonstrate that the friction coefficient of the driving protocols is sharply peaked at the interface between metastable regions, which leads to minimum-dissipation protocols that drive rapidly within a metastable basin, but then linger longest at the interface, giving the…

In this work we analyze the thermodynamic properties of the pseudospin-1 Hamiltonian on the two-dimensional {\cal{T}} -3 or Diced Lattice. Starting from the Partition function, we obtain the Grand ensemble thermodynamic potential, entropy and specific heat exactly and in the degenerate and non-degenerate regimes.
We investigate perturbative thermodynamic geometry of nonextensive ideal Classical, Bose and Fermi gases. We show that the intrinsic statistical interaction of nonextensive Bose (Fermi) gas is attractive (repulsive) similar to the extensive case but the value of thermodynamic curvature is changed by nonextensive parameter. In contrary to the extensive ideal classical gas, the nonextensive one may be divided to two different regimes. According to deviation parameter of the system to the nonextensive case, one can find a special value of fugacity, $z^{*}$, where the sign of thermodynamic curvatur…
We can incorporate a "time" evolution into thermodynamics as a Hamilton-Jacobi dynamics. A set of the equations of states in thermodynamics is considered as the generalized eikonal equation, which is equivalent to Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We relate the Hamilton-Jacobi dynamics of a simple thermodynamic system to the gradient flows in information geometry.
In this work we analyze the statistical thermodynamics of Diced lattice carriers employing a Greens function formulation to examine the grand potential, Helmholtz free energy, the grand and ordinary partition functions and entropy. This facilitates the calculation of the specific heat, and all evaluations are carried out for both the degenerate and nondegenerate statistical regimes.
We investigate the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures of certain hypersurfaces in the thermodynamic geometry of a physical system and show that they contain useful thermodynamic information. For an anti-Reissner-Nordström-(A)de Sitter black hole (Phantom), the extrinsic curvature of a constant $Q$ hypersurface has the same sign as the heat capacity around the phase transition points. For a Kerr-Newmann-AdS (KN-AdS) black hole, the extrinsic curvature of $Q \to 0$ hypersurface (Kerr black hole) or $J \to 0$ hypersurface (RN black black hole) has the same sign as the heat capacity around the pha…
In this paper we discuss a formulation of extended phase space thermodynamics of black holes in Anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes from the contact geometry point of view. Thermodynamics of black holes can be understood within the framework of contact geometry as flows of vector fields generated by Hamiltonian functions on equilibrium submanifolds in the extended phase space that naturally incorporates the structure of a contact manifold. Deformations induced by the contact vector fields are used to construct various maps among thermodynamic quantities. Thermodynamic variables and equations of st…
Since the 1970s contact geometry has been recognized as an appropriate framework for the geometric formulation of the state properties of thermodynamic systems, without, however, addressing the formulation of non-equilibrium thermodynamic processes. In Balian & Valentin (2001) it was shown how the symplectization of contact manifolds provides a new vantage point; enabling, among others, to switch between the energy and entropy representations of a thermodynamic system. In the present paper this is continued towards the global geometric definition of a degenerate Riemannian metric on the homoge…
In this paper, the new formalism of thermodynamic geometry proposed in [1] is employed in investigating phase transition points and the critical behavior of a Gauss Bonnet-AdS black hole in four dimensional spacetime. In this regard, extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of a certain kind of hypersurface immersed in the thermodynamic manifold contain information about stability/instability of heat capacities. We, therefore, calculate the intrinsic curvature of the $Q$-zero hypersurface for a four-dimensional neutral Gauss Bonnet black hole case in the extended phase space. Interestingly, intrinsi…
We develop a geometric framework to describe the thermodynamics of microscopic heat engines driven by slow periodic temperature variations and modulations of a mechanical control parameter. Covering both the classical and the quantum regime, our approach reveals a universal trade-off relation between efficiency and power that follows solely from geometric arguments and holds for any thermodynamically consistent microdynamics. Focusing on Lindblad dynamics, we derive a second bound showing that coherence as a genuine quantum effect inevitably reduces the performance of slow engine cycles regard…
Self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory and its application in computing thermodynamic properties of materials are reviewed from a historical perspective. Various more recent implementations based on first-principles electronic structure methods using the density functional theory (DFT) have been discussed. The SCP equations can be derived either from a diagrammatic perturbation theory or a variational approach based on free-energy minimization. These methods can also be used to predict phase change due to phonon softening, and can be extended to study the coupling of phonons to other degrees of f…
This paper contains a fully geometric formulation of the General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC). Although GENERIC, which is the sum of Hamiltonian mechanics and gradient dynamics, is a framework unifying a vast range of models in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, it has unclear geometric structure, due to the diverse geometric origins of Hamiltonian mechanics and gradient dynamics. The difference can be overcome by cotangent lifts of the dynamics, which leads, for instance, to a Hamiltonian form of gradient dynamics. Moreover, the lifted vector fields can…
