In ceria-based catalysis, the shape of the catalyst particle, which determines the exposed crystal facets, profoundly affects its reactivity. The vibrational frequency of adsorbed carbon monoxide (CO) can be used as a sensitive probe to identify the exposed surface facets, provided reference data on well-defined single crystal surfaces together with a definitive theoretical assignment exist. We investigate the adsorption of CO on the CeO2(110 and (111) surfaces and show that the commonly applied DFT(PBE)+U method does not provide reliable CO vibrational frequencies by comparing with state-of-the-art infrared spectroscopy experiments for monocrystalline CeO2 surfaces. Good agreement requires the hybrid DFT approach with the HSE06 functional. The failure of conventional DFT is explained in terms of its inability to accurately describe the facet- and configuration-specific donation and backdonation effects that control the changes in the C-O bond length upon CO adsorption and the CO force constant. Our findings thus provide a theoretical basis for the detailed interpretation of experiments and open up the path to characterize more complex scenarios, including oxygen vacancies and metal adatoms.
Hybrid functionals' non-local exchange-correlation potential contains a derivative discontinuity that improves on standard semi-local density functional theory (DFT) band gaps. Moreover, by careful parameterization, hybrid functionals can provide self-interaction reduced description of selected states. On the other hand, the uniform description of all the electronic states of a given system is a know drawback of these functionals that causes varying accuracy in the description of states with different degrees of localization. This limitation can be remedied by the orbital dependent exact excha…
Cerium and its technologically relevant compounds are examples of anomalous mixed valency, originating from two competing oxidation states -- itinerant Ce$^{3+}$ and localized Ce$^{4+}$. Under applied stress, anomalous transitions are observed but not well understood. Here we treat mixed valency as an "alloy" involving two valences with competing and numerous site-occupancy configurations, and we use density functional theory with Hubbard U ($i.e.$, DFT+U) to evaluate the effective valence and predict properties, including controlling valence by pseudo-ternary alloying. For Ce and its compound…
We report an implementation of the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method within the projector augmented-wave framework. It allows for the calculation of the screened interaction in the same Wannier orbitals as our recent DFT+U and DFT+DMFT implementations. We present calculations of the dynamical Coulomb screened interaction in uranium dioxide and alpha and gamma cerium on Wannier functions. We show that a self-consistent calculation of the static screened interaction in DFT+U together with a consistent Wannier basis is mandatory for gamma cerium and uranium dioxide. We emphasiz…
An implementation of full self-consistency over the electronic density in the DFT+DMFT framework on the basis of a plane wave-projector augmented wave (PAW) DFT code is presented. It allows for an accurate calculation of the total energy in DFT+DMFT within a plane wave approach. In contrast to frameworks based on the maximally localized Wannier function, the method is easily applied to f electron systems, such as cerium, cerium oxide (Ce2O3) and plutonium oxide (Pu2O3). In order to have a correct and physical calculation of the energy terms, we find that the calculation of the self-consistent …
Electron transfer with changing occupation in the 4f subshell poses a considerable challenge for quantitative predictions in quantum chemistry. Using the example of cerium oxide, we identify the main deficiencies of common parameter-dependent one-electron approaches, such as density functional theory (DFT) with a Hubbard correction, or hybrid functionals. As a response, we present the first benchmark of ab initio many-electron theory for electron transfer energies and lattice parameters under periodic boundary conditions. We show that the direct random phase approximation clearly outperforms a…
Using density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), we investigate the stability and response functions of CsH$_2$PO$_4$, a ferroelectric material at low temperature. This material cannot be described properly by the usual (semi-)local approximations within DFT. The long-range e$^-$-e$^-$ correlation needs to be properly taken into account, using, for instance, Grimme's DFT-D methods, as investigated in this work. We find that DFT-D3(BJ) performs the best for the members of the dihydrogenated alkali phosphate family (KH$_2$PO$_4$, RbH$_2$PO$_4$, CsH$_2$PO$_…
CO adsorption on Cu(111) and Cu(001) surfaces has been studied within ab-initio density functional theory (DFT). The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of the adsorbate-substrate complex have been calculated. Calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) predict adsorption in the threefold hollow on Cu(111) and in the bridge-site on Cu(001), instead of on-top as found experimentally. It is demonstrated that the correct site preference is achieved if the underestimation of the HOMO-LUMO gap of CO characteristic for DFT is correct by applying a molecular DFT+…
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …
Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E…
Using density functional theory (DFT) we report results for the electronic structure and vibrational dynamics of hydrogenated β reconstructed Silicon Carbide (001) (3x2) surfaces with various levels of hydrogenation. These results were obtained using density functional theory with a generalized gradient exchange correlation function. The calculations reveal that metallization can be achieved via hydrogen atoms occupying the second silicon layer. Further increases of hydrogen occupation on the second silicon layer sites result in a loss of this metallization. For the former scenario, where meta…
By means of vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT), we investigate CO adsorption on phosphorene-based systems. We find stable CO adsorption at room temperature on both phosphorene and bulk black phosphorus. The adsorption energy and vibrational spectrum have been calculated for several possible configurations of the CO overlayer. We find that the vibrational spectrum is characterized by two different C-O stretching energies. The experimental data are in good agreement with the prediction of the DFT model and unveil the unusual C-O vibrational band at 165-180 meV, activate…
[Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] is a prototype transition metal complex material, which undergoes a phase transition between low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) phases, induced by temperature, pressure or light. Vibrational modes play a key role for spin-state switching both in thermal and photo-induced cases, by contributing to vibrational entropy for thermal equilibrium transitions or driving the fast structural trapping of the photoinduced high spin state. Here we study the crystal phonon modes of [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2], by combining THz, IR, and Raman spectroscopies sensitive to modes in different frequency ran…
In this work, we study structural and vibrational properties of multilayer graphene using density-functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals (vdW) functionals. Initially, we analyze how different vdW functionals compare by evaluating the lattice parameters, elastic constants and vibrational frequencies of low energy optical modes of graphite. Our results indicate that the vdW-DF1-optB88 functional has the best overall performance on the description of vibrational properties. Next, we use this functional to study the influence of the vdW interactions on the structural and vibrational properties…
We present ab-initio density functional (DFT) calculations of the vibrational spectra of neutral Magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) molecule and of its Raman scattering intensities.
The adsorption of hydrogen at nonpolar GaN(1-100) surfaces and its impact on the electronic and vibrational properties is investigated using surface electron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For the surface mediated dissociation of H2 and the subsequent adsorption of H, an energy barrier of 0.55 eV has to be overcome. The calculated kinetic surface phase diagram indicates that the reaction is kinetically hindered at low pressures and low temperatures. At higher temperatures ab-initio thermodynamics show, that the H-free surface is energetically fav…
The crystal structure of Lanthanum Cerium Oxide (La$_2$Ce$_2$O$_7$) is investigated using \textit{ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The relative stability of fluorite- and pyrochlore-like structures is studied through comparison of their formation energies. These formation energies show the pyrochlore structure to be favored over the fluorite structure, apparently contradicting the conclusions based on experimental neutron and X-ray diffraction (XRD). By calculating and comparing XRD spectra for a set of differently ordered and random structures, we show that the pyrochl…
Surface enhanced Raman spectra of Phenylalanine (Phe) in Ag colloidal solution have been recorded for Phe solutions of different pH. Spectral line-shape analyses of the enhanced modes, at 1005, 1380 and 1582 cm-1, between pH 4.5 and 10.5, have been carried out. The variation of spectral line-width with pH reveals two possible mechanisms in solution: (i) the fluctuation of pH in microscopic volume in an overall uniform pH solution and/or (ii) the motional narrowing caused by the intermolecular ionic interaction. We suggest that different charge states of the reference molecule are responsible f…
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and quantum chemistry calculations that are based on the density functional theory (DFT) have been used to study the structure, molecular interactions of the nematic and twist-bend phases for thioether-linked dimers. Infrared absorbance measurements were conducted in a polarized beam for a homogeneously aligned sample in order to obtain more details about the orientation of the vibrational transition dipole moments. The distributions to investigate the structure and conformation of the molecule dihedral angle were calculated. The calculated spectrum was compared with…

This work examines the carbon defects associated with recently reported and novel peaks of infrared (IR) absorption and Raman scattering appearing in GaN crystals at carbon ($^{12}C$) doping in the range of concentrations from $3.2*10^{17}$ to $3.5*10^{19} cm^{-3}$. 14 unique vibrational modes of defects are observed in GaN samples grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) and then compared with defect properties predicted from first-principles calculations. The vibrational frequency shift in two $^{13}C$ enriched samples related to the effect of the isotope mass indicates six distinct confi…
We show that the Gaussian Approximation Potential machine learning framework can describe complex magnetic potential energy surfaces, taking ferromagnetic iron as a paradigmatic challenging case. The training database includes total energies, forces, and stresses obtained from density-functional theory in the generalized-gradient approximation, and comprises approximately 150,000 local atomic environments, ranging from pristine and defected bulk configurations to surfaces and generalized stacking faults with different crystallographic orientations. We find the structural, vibrational and therm…
We have combined scanning tunneling microscopy with inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) and density functional theory (DFT) to study a tetracyanoethylene monolayer on Ag(100). Images show that the molecules arrange in locally ordered patterns with three non-equivalent, but undeterminable, adsorption sites. While scanning tunneling spectroscopy only shows subtle variations of the local electronic structure at the three different positions, we find that vibrational modes are very sensitive to the local atomic environment. IETS detects sizeable mode frequency shifts of the molecules …

The evolution of titanyl-phthalocyanine (TiOPc) thin films on Ag(111) has been investigated using IRAS, SPA-LEED and STM. In the (sub)monolayer regime various phases are observed that can be assigned to a 2D gas, a commensurate and a point-on-line phase. In all three phases the non-planar TiOPc molecule is adsorbed on Ag(111) in an oxygen-up configuration with the molecular pi-conjugated backbone oriented parallel to the surface. The commensurate phase reveals a high packing density, containing two molecules at inequivalent adsorption sites within the unit cell. Both molecules assume different…
Based on the van der Waals density functional theory (vdW-DFT)+U scheme, we carry out the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study of the interaction dynamics for H$_{2}$ impingement against the stoichiometric PuO$_{2}$(111), the reduced PuO$_{2}$(111), and the stoichiometric $α$-Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$(111) surfaces. The hydrogen molecular physisorption states, which can not be captured by pure DFT+\textit{U} method, are obtained by employing the vdW-DFT+\textit{U} scheme. We show that except for the weak physisorption, PuO$_{2}$(111) surfaces are so difficult of access that almost all of the H$_{2}…
Understanding the electronic charge distribution around oxygen vacancies in transition metal and rare earth oxides is a scientific challenge of considerable technological importance. We show how significant information about the charge distribution around vacancies in cerium oxide can be gained from a study of high resolution crystal structures of higher order oxides which exhibit ordering of oxygen vacancies. Specifically, we consider the implications of a bond valence sum analysis of Ce$_{7}$O$_{12}$ and Ce$_{11}$O$_{20}$. To illuminate our analysis we show alternative representations of the…
Structural phase transitions as a function of temperature dictate the structure--functionality relationships in many technologically important materials. Harmonic Hamiltonians have proven successful in predicting the vibrational properties of many materials. However, they are inadequate for modeling structural phase transitions in crystals with potential energy surfaces that are either strongly anharmonic or no\ n-convex with respect to collective atomic displacements or homogeneous strains. In this paper we develop a framework to express highly anharmonic first-principles potential energy sur…
The work presents the electronic structure, spin state and optical properties of TM-dinuclear molecules (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) which was modelled according to the recently reported Pt$^{II}$-dinuclear complex data\cite{kar_colour_2016}. The molecules were geometrically optimized in the gas phase and their stability were analyzed from vibrational spectra study using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The ground spin state of the tetra-coordinated TM atom in the modeled molecules was predicted based on the relative energies between the possible spin states of the molecules. We …

Accurate prediction of molecular vibrational frequencies is important to identify spectroscopic signatures and reaction thermodynamics. In this work, we develop a method to quantify uncertainty associated with density functional theory predicted harmonic vibration frequencies utilizing the built-in error estimation capabilities of the BEEF-vdW exchange-correlation functional. The method is computationally efficiency by estimating the uncertainty at nearly the same computational cost as a single vibrational frequency calculation. We demonstrate the utility and robustness of the method by showin…
We present large-scale density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature programmed desorption measurements to characterize the structural, energetic and vibrational properties of the functionalized molecular switch 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-butyl-azobenzene (TBA) adsorbed at Au(111). Particular emphasis is placed on exploring the accuracy of the semi-empirical dispersion correction approach to semi-local DFT (DFT-D) in accounting for the substantial van der Waals component in the surface chemical bond. In line with previous findings for benzene and pure azobenzene at coinage metal surfa…
Theoretical DFT calculations using GGA+U and HSE06 frameworks enabled vibrational mode assignment and partial (atomic) phonon DOS determination in KAgF3 perovskite, a low-dimensional magnetic fluoroargentate(II). Twelve bands in the spectra of KAgF3 were assigned to either IR active or Raman active modes, reaching very good correlation with experimental values (R2>0.997). Low-temperature Raman measurements indicate that the intriguing spin-Peierls-like phase transition at 230 K is an order-disorder transition and it does not strongly impact the vibrational structure of the material.

Lattice vibration frequencies are related to many important materials properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity as well as superconductivity. However, computational calculation of vibration frequencies using density functional theory (DFT) methods is too computationally demanding for a large number of samples in materials screening. Here we propose a deep graph neural network-based algorithm for predicting crystal vibration frequencies from crystal structures with high accuracy. Our algorithm addresses the variable dimension of vibration frequency spectrum using the zero padding s…
