Physical reservoir computing is a type of recurrent neural network that applies the dynamical response from physical systems to information processing. However, the relation between computation performance and physical parameters/phenomena still remains unclear. This study reports our progress regarding the role of current-dependent magnetic damping in the computational performance of reservoir computing. The current-dependent relaxation dynamics of a magnetic vortex core results in an asymmetric memory function with respect to binary inputs. A fast relaxation caused by a large input leads to a fast fading of the input memory, whereas a slow relaxation by a small input enables the reservoir to keep the input memory for a relatively long time. As a result, a step-like dependence is found for the short-term memory and parity-check capacities on the pulse width of input data, where the capacities remain at 1.5 for a certain range of the pulse width, and drop to 1.0 for a long pulse-width limit. Both analytical and numerical analyses clarify that the step-like behavior can be attributed to the current-dependent relaxation time of the vortex core to a limit-cycle state. }
The role of the feedback effect on physical reservoir computing is studied theoretically by solving the vortex-core dynamics in a nanostructured ferromagnet. Although the spin-transfer torque due to the feedback current makes the vortex dynamics complex, it is clarified that the feedback effect does not always contribute to the enhancement of the memory function in a physical reservoir. The memory function, characterized by the correlation coefficient between the input data and the dynamical response of the vortex core, becomes large when the delay time of the feedback current is not an integr…
All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetic materials describes the reversal of the magnetization using short (femtosecond) laser pulses, and has been observed in a variety of materials. In the past decade it received extensive attention due to its high potential for fast and energy-efficient data writing in future spintronic memory applications. Unfortunately, the AOS mechanism in the ferromagnetic multilayers commonly used in spintronics needs multiple pulses for the magnetization reversal, losing its speed and energy efficiency. Here, we experimentally demonstrate `on-the-fly' single-pulse AOS …
Narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation is crucial for high-resolution spectral identification, but a narrowband THz source driven by femtosecond (fs) laser has remained scarce. Here, it is computationally predicted that a metal/dielectric/magnetoelastic heterostructure enables converting a fs laser pulse into a multi-cycle THz pulse with a narrow linewidth down to ~1.5 GHz, which is in contrast with the single-cycle, broadband THz pulse from the existing fs-laser-excited emitters. It is shown that such narrowband THz pulse originates from the excitation and long-distance transport of THz spin wa…
Recent studies in spintronics have highlighted ultrathin magnetic metallic multilayers as a novel and very promising class of broadband terahertz radiation sources. Such spintronic multilayers consist of ferromagnetic (FM) and non-magnetic (NM) thin films. When triggered by ultrafast laser pulses, they generate pulsed THz radiation due to the inverse spin-Hall effect, a mechanism that converts optically driven spin currents from the magnetized FM layer into transient transverse charge currents in the NM layer, resulting in THz emission. As THz emitters, FM/NM multilayers have been intensively …
We report on generation of pulsed broadband terahertz radiation utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect in Fe/Pt bilayers on MgO and sapphire substrates. The emitter was optimized with respect to layer thickness, growth parameters, substrates and geometrical arrangement. The experimentally determined optimum layer thicknesses were in qualitative agreement with simulations of the spin current induced in the ferromagnetic layer. Our model takes into account generation of spin polarization, spin diffusion and accumulation in Fe and Pt and electrical as well as optical properties of the bilayer sam…
We analyze a quantum-classical hybrid system of steadily precessing slow classical localized magnetic moments, forming a head-to-head domain wall, embedded into an open quantum system of fast nonequilibrium electrons. The electrons reside within a metallic wire connected to macroscopic reservoirs. The model captures the essence of dynamical noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic textures in spintronics, while making it possible to obtain the exact time-dependent nonequilibrium density matrix of electronic system and split it into four contributions. The Fermi surface contribution generates diss…
We simulate automotion, the spontaneous transport of a magnetic domain wall under the influence of demagnetization and magnetic anisotropy, in nanoscale spintronic interconnects. In contrast to spin transfer driven magnetic domain wall motion, the proposed interconnects operate with only a transient current pulse and provide favorable scaling down to the 20nm scale. Cases of both in-plane and perpendicular magnetization are considered. Analytical dependence of the velocity of domain walls on the angle of magnetization are compared with full micromagnetic simulations. Deceleration, disappearanc…
Quantum limits of power dissipation in spintronic computing are estimated. A computing element composed of a single electron in a quantum dot is considered. Dynamics of its spin due to external magnetic field and interaction with adjacent dots is described via the Bloch equations. Spin relaxation due to magnetic noise from various sources is described as coupling to a reservoir. Resulting dissipation of energy is calculated and is shown to be much less than the thermal limit, ~kT per bit, if the rate of spin relaxation is much slower than the switching rate. Clues on how to engineer an energy …
We show that to correctly describe the ultrafast currents in spintronic THz emitters it is necessary to take charge equilibration into account. The charge current which is locally induced by a fs laser pulse and the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) leads to ultrafast charging phenomena at the edge of the illuminated area. Subsequent discharging leads to a current backflow with a delay and a time constant that mainly depends on the conductivity of the emitter. On the one hand, only this delayed charge equilibration allows the detection of the primary current pulse via THz emission because an ins…
Novel computational paradigms may provide the blueprint to help solving the time and energy limitations that we face with our modern computers, and provide solutions to complex problems more efficiently (with reduced time, power consumption and/or less device footprint) than is currently possible with standard approaches. Spintronics offers a promising basis for the development of efficient devices and unconventional operations for at least three main reasons: (i) the low-power requirements of spin-based devices, i.e., requiring no standby power for operation and the possibility to write infor…
There has been an extensive development in the use of multi-partite entanglement as a resource for various quantum information processing tasks. In this paper we focus on preparing arbitrary spin eigenstates whose subset contain important entangled resources like Dicke states as well as some other sub-radiant states that are difficult to prepare. Leveraging on the symmetry of these states we consider uniform pairwise exchange coupling between every pair of qubits. Starting from a product state of a given spin eigenstate with a single qubit state, another spin eigenstate can be prepared using s…
The Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm posits that sufficiently complex physical systems can be used to massively simplify pattern recognition tasks and nonlinear signal prediction. This work demonstrates how random topological magnetic textures present sufficiently complex resistance responses for the implementation of RC as applied to A/C current pulses. In doing so, we stress how the applicability of this paradigm hinges on very general dynamical properties which are satisfied by a large class of physical systems where complexity can be put to computational use. By harnessing the complex res…
A molecular wire coupled to two electron reservoirs is investigated within a tight-binding approach including spin and Coulomb interaction. Under the assumption of weak coupling to the electron reservoirs a quantum master equation can be derived for the electron transport through the wire. Motivated by the phenomenon of coherent destruction of tunneling for monochromatic laser fields, the influence of Gaussian laser pulses on the transport through the wires is studied. For situations in which the maximum amplitude of the electric field fulfills the conditions for the destructive quantum effect…
The field of THz spintronics is a novel direction in the research field of spintronics that combines magnetism with optical physics and ultrafast photonics. The experimental scheme of the field involves the use of femtosecond laser pulses to trigger ultrafast spin and charge dynamics in bilayers composed of ferromagnetic (FM) and non-magnetic (NM) thin films where the NM layer features a strong spin-orbit coupling. The key technological and scientific challenges of THz spintronic emitters is to increase their intensity and frequency bandwidth. To achieve this the control of the source of the r…
A numerical analysis on the computational capability of physical reservoir computing utilizing a spin-torque oscillator with two free layers is reported. Conventional spintronics devices usually consist of two ferromagnets, where the direction of magnetization in one layer, called the free layer, can move while that of the other, the reference layer, is fixed. Recently, however, devices with two free layers, where the reference layer is replaced by another free layer, have been developed for various practical applications. Adding another free layer drastically changes the dynamical response of…

Graphene nanodisk is a graphene derivative with a closed edge. The trigonal zigzag nanodisk with size $N$ has $N$-fold degenerated zero-energy states. A nanodisk can be interpletted as a quantum dot with an internal degree of freedom. The grand state of nanodisk has been argued to be a quasi-ferromagnet, which is a ferromagnetic-like states with a finite but very long life time. We investigate the spin-filter effects in the system made of nanodisks and leads based on the master equation. The finite-size effect on spin filter is intriguing due to a reaction from the polarization of incoming cur…
Control of magnetism without using magnetic fields enables large-scale integration of spintronic devices for memory, computation and communication in the beyond-CMOS era. Mechanisms including spin torque transfer, spin Hall effect, and electric field or strain assisted switching have been implemented to switch magnetization in various spintronic devices. Their operation speed, however, is fundamentally limited by the spin precession time to be longer than 10-100 picoseconds. Overcoming such a speed constraint is critical for the prospective development of spintronics. Here we report the demons…
Quantum-classical approach to spin and charge pumping and the ensuing radiation in THz spintronics: Example of ultrafast-light-driven Weyl antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn
Employing electron spin instead of charge to develop spintronic devices holds the merits of low-power consumption in information technologies. Meanwhile, the demand for increasing speed in spintronics beyond current CMOS technology has further triggered intensive researches for ultrafast control of spins even up to unprecedent terahertz regime. The femtosecond laser has been emerging as a potential technique to generate an ultrafast spin-current burst for magnetization manipulation. However, there is a great challenge to establish all-optical control and monitor of the femtosecond transient sp…
The ultimate control of magnetic states of matter at femtosecond (or even faster) timescales defines one of the most pursued paradigm shifts for future information technology. In this context, ultrafast laser pulses developed into extremely valuable stimuli for the all-optical magnetisation reversal in ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic alloys and multilayers, while this remains elusive in elementary ferromagnets. Here we demonstrate that a single laser pulse with sub-picosecond duration can lead to the reversal of the magnetisation of bulk nickel, in tandem with the expected demagnetisation. As …
Spintronics had a widespread impact over the past decades due to transferring information by spin rather than electric currents. Its further development requires miniaturization and reduction of characteristic timescales of spin dynamics combining the sub-nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal ranges. These demands shift the focus of interest towards the fundamental open question of the interaction of femtosecond spin current (SC) pulses with a ferromagnet (FM). The spatio-temporal properties of the impulsive spin transfer torque exerted by ultrashort SC pulses on the FM open the time doma…
Graphene is an attractive material for spintronics due to theoretical predictions of long spin lifetimes arising from low spin-orbit and hyperfine couplings. In experiments, however, spin lifetimes in single layer graphene (SLG) measured via Hanle effects are much shorter than expected theoretically. Thus, the origin of spin relaxation in SLG is a major issue for graphene spintronics. Despite extensive theoretical and experimental work addressing this question, there is still little clarity on the microscopic origin of spin relaxation. By using organic ligand-bound nanoparticles as charge rese…

Using the sensitivity of magneto-induced second harmonic generation to spin currents (SC), we demonstrate in Fe/Au/Fe/MgO(001) pseudo spin valves the generation of 250 fs-long SC pulses. Their temporal profile indicates that superdiffusive hot electron transport across a sub-100~nm Au layer is close to the ballistic limit and the pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe. Considering the calculated spin-dependent Fe/Au interface transmittance we conclude that a non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect is responsible for the generatio…
The precise control of spins in semiconductor spintronic devices requires electrical means for generating spin packets with a well-defined initial phase. We demonstrate a pulsed electrical scheme that triggers the spin ensemble phase in a similar way as circularly-polarized optical pulses are generating phase coherent spin packets. Here, we use fast current pulses to initialize phase coherent spin packets, which are injected across an Fe/GaAs Schottky barrier into $n$-GaAs. By means of time-resolved Faraday rotation, we demonstrate phase coherence by the observation of multiple Larmor precessi…
The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics, causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser pulses. Employing terahertz (10$^{12}$ Hz) emission spectroscopy, we demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of th…
The injection of spin currents in semiconductors is one of the big challenges of spintronics. Motivated by the ultrafast demagnetisation and spin injection into metals, we propose an alternative femtosecond route based on the laser excitation of superdiffusive spin currents in a ferromagnet such as Ni. Our calculations show that even though only a fraction of the current crosses the Ni-Si interface, the laser-induced creation of strong transient electrical fields at a ferromagnet-semiconductor interface allows for the injection of chargeless spin currents with a record spin polarisations of 80…
