We employ the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG-300-1 to explore the halo occupation distribution (HOD) and environmental dependence of luminous star-forming emission-line galaxies (ELGs) at $z \sim 1$. Such galaxies are key targets for current and upcoming cosmological surveys. We select model galaxies through cuts in colour-colour space allowing for a direct comparison with the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) surveys and then compare them with galaxies selected based on specific star-formation rate (sSFR) and stellar mass. We demonstrate that the ELG populations are twice more likely to reside in lower-density regions (sheets) compared with the mass-selected populations and twice less likely to occupy the densest regions of the cosmic web (knots). We also show that the colour-selected and sSFR-selected ELGs exhibit very similar occupation and clustering statistics, finding that the agreement is best for lower redshifts. In contrast with the mass-selected sample, the occupation of haloes by a central ELG peaks at $\sim$20\%. We furthermore explore the dependence of the HOD and the auto-correlation on environment, noticing that at fixed halo mass, galaxies in high-density regions cluster about 10 times more strongly than low-density ones. This result suggests that we should model carefully the galaxy-halo relation and implement assembly bias effects into our models (estimated at $\sim$4\% of the clustering of the DESI colour-selected sample at $z = 0.8$). Finally, we apply a simple mock recipe to recover the clustering on large scales ($r \gtrsim 1 \ {\rm Mpc}/h$) to within 1\% by augmenting the HOD model with an environment dependence, demonstrating the power of adopting flexible population models.
The dark matter content of a gravitationally bound halo is known to be affected by the galaxy and gas it hosts. We characterise this response for haloes spanning over four orders of magnitude in mass in the hydrodynamical simulation suites IllustrisTNG and EAGLE. We present simple fitting functions in the spherically averaged quasi-adiabatic relaxation framework that accurately capture the dark matter response over the full range of halo mass and halo-centric distance we explore. We show that commonly employed schemes, which consider the relative change in radius $r_f/r_i-1$ of a spherical dar…
We use the improved IllustrisTNG300 magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to revisit the effect that secondary halo bias has on the clustering of the central galaxy population. With a side length of 205 $h^{-1}$Mpc and significant improvements on the sub-grid model with respect to the previous Illustris boxes, IllustrisTNG300 allows us to explore the dependencies of galaxy clustering over a large cosmological volume and wide halo-mass range. We show, at high statistical significance, that the halo assembly bias signal (i.e., the secondary dependence of halo bias on halo formation reds…
We use the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to investigate the stellar specific angular momenta ($j_{\ast}$) of $\sim$12,000 central galaxies at $z=0$ in a full cosmological context, with stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$) ranging from $10^{9}$ to $10^{12} \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$. We find that the $j_{\ast}$-$M_{\ast}$ relations for early-type and late-type galaxies in IllustrisTNG are in good overall agreement with observations, and that these galaxy types typically `retain' $\sim$10-20 and $\sim$50-60 per cent of their host haloes' specific angular momenta, respectively, with some dependen…
We use the IllustrisTNG (TNG) simulations to explore the galaxy-halo connection as inferred from state-of-the-art cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulations. With the high mass resolution and large volume achieved by combining the 100 Mpc (TNG100) and 300 Mpc (TNG300) volumes, we establish the mean occupancy of central and satellite galaxies and their dependence on the properties of the dark matter haloes hosting them. We derive best-fitting HOD parameters from TNG100 and TNG300 for target galaxy number densities of $\bar{n}_g = 0.032\,h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$ and $\bar{n}_g = 0.016\,h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$…
Upcoming spectroscopic redshift surveys use emission line galaxies (ELGs) to trace the three-dimensional matter distributions with wider area coverage in the deeper Universe. Since the halos hosting ELGs are young and undergo infall towards more massive halos along filamentary structures, contrary to a widely employed luminous red galaxy sample, the dynamics specific to ELGs should be taken into account to refine the theoretical modelling at non-linear scales. In this paper, we scrutinise the halo occupation distribution (HOD) and clustering properties of ELGs by utilising IllustrisTNG galaxy …
Abundance matching studies have shown that the average relationship between galaxy radius and dark matter halo virial radius remains nearly constant over many orders of magnitude in halo mass, and over cosmic time since about $z=3$. In this work, we investigate the predicted relationship between galaxy radius $r_{e}$ and halo virial radius $R_{\rm h}$ in the numerical hydrodynamical simulations Illustris and IllustrisTNG from $z\sim 0$--3, and compare with the results from the abundance matching studies. We find that Illustris predicts much higher $r_e/R_{\rm h}$ values than the constraints ob…
The connections among galaxies, the dark matter halos where they form and the properties of the large-scale Cosmic Web still need to be completely disentangled. We use the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation TNG100 of the IllustrisTNG suite to quantify the effects played by the large-scale density field and the Cosmic Web morphology on the relation between halo mass and galaxy stellar mass. We select objects with total dynamical mass in the range $\geq 6.3\times 10^{10} h ^{-1}\, M_{\odot}$ up to a few $10^{14} h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ between redshift $z=4$ and redshift $z=0$. A Cosmic Web cla…
Observable thermodynamical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) reflect the complex interplay between AGN feedback and the gravitational collapse of haloes. Using the large volume TNG300 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project we provide predictions for X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) scaling relations for a sample of over 30,000 haloes that cover a wide mass range from galaxies to massive galaxy clusters ($M_{\rm 500crit}$ $\in [10^{12}$ M$_{\odot} - 2\times 10^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$]). We produce mock X-ray observations of simulated haloes using methods that are consistent with observatio…
In this work, we compare large scale structure observables for stellar mass selected samples at $z=0$, as predicted by two galaxy models, the hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG and the Santa-Cruz semi-analytic model (SC-SAM). Although both models have been independently calibrated to match observations, rather than each other, we find good agreement between the two models for two-point clustering and galaxy assembly bias signatures. The models also show a qualitatively similar response of occupancy and clustering to secondary halo paramaters other than mass, such as formation history and c…
We explore the abundance, spatial distribution, and physical properties of the OVI, OVII, and OVIII ions of oxygen in circumgalactic and intergalactic media (the CGM, IGM, and WHIM). We use the TNG100 and TNG300 large volume cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Modeling the ionization states of simulated oxygen, we find good agreement with observations of the low-redshift OVI column density distribution function (CDDF), and present its evolution for all three ions from z=0 to z=4. Producing mock quasar absorption line spectral surveys, we show that the IllustrisTNG simulations are …
We perform a comparison, object-by-object and statistically, between the Munich semi-analytical model, L-Galaxies, and the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations. By running L-Galaxies on the IllustrisTNG dark matter-only merger trees, we identify the same galaxies in the two models. This allows us to compare the stellar mass, star formation rate and gas content of galaxies, as well as the baryonic content of subhaloes and haloes in the two models. We find that both the stellar mass functions and the stellar masses of individual galaxies agree to better than $\sim0.2\,$dex. On the other hand,…
Recent X-ray observations have revealed remarkable correlations between the masses of central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the X-ray properties of the hot atmospheres permeating their host galaxies, thereby indicating the crucial role of the atmospheric gas in tracing SMBH growth in the high-mass regime. We examine this topic theoretically using the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations and provide insights to the nature of this SMBH -- gaseous halo connection. By carrying out a mock X-ray analysis for a mass-selected sample of TNG100 simulated galaxies at $z=0$, we inspect the relatio…

We explore the nature of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) in the hydrodynamic cosmological simulation TNG100 of the IllustrisTNG project, selecting a sample of LSBGs ($r$-band effective surface brightness $μ_r > 22.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) at $z=0$ over a wide range of stellar masses ($M_{\ast} = 10^{9}$-$10^{12}$ M$_\odot$). We find LSBGs of all stellar masses, although they are particularly prevalent at $M_{\ast} < 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. We show that the specific star formation rates of LSBGs are not significantly different from those of high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs) but, as a po…
We revisited the problem of mixing in a gravitational N-body system from the point of view of the ordering of coarse-grained cells in the one-particle energy space, here denoted {\it energy ranking preservation} (ERP). This effect has been noted for some time in simulations, although individual particle energies and their phase-space variables mix considerably. The present investigation aimed to map ERP in terms of parameters involving the collective range in which it is effective, as well as in terms of global and historical characterisations of gravitational systems evolving towards equilibr…

We explore the potential of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect as the cornerstone of a future observational probe for halo spin bias, the secondary dependence of halo clustering on halo spin at fixed halo mass. Using the IllustrisTNG magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, we measure both the kSZ and the thermal SZ (tSZ) effects produced by the baryonic content of more than 50,000 haloes within the halo mass range $11 < \log_{10} ({\rm M_{vir}}/ h^{-1} {\rm M_{\odot}}) \lesssim 14.5$. First, we confirm that the magnitude of both effects depends strongly on the total gas and vi…
We study the impact that baryon-CDM relative density perturbations $δ_{bc}$ have on galaxy formation using cosmological simulations with the IllustrisTNG model. These isocurvature (non-adiabatic) perturbations can be induced primordially, if multiple fields are present during inflation, and are generated before baryon-photon decoupling when baryons did not comove with CDM. The presence of long-wavelength $δ_{bc}$ perturbations in our simulations is mimicked by modifying the ratios of the cosmic densities of baryons $Ω_b$ and CDM $Ω_c$, at fixed total matter density $Ω_m$. We measure the corres…
The IllustrisTNG project is a new suite of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation performed with the Arepo code and updated models for feedback physics. Here we introduce the first two simulations of the series, TNG100 and TNG300, and quantify the stellar mass content of about 4000 massive galaxy groups and clusters ($10^{13} \leq M_{\rm 200c}/M_{\rm sun} \leq 10^{15}$) at recent times ($z \leq 1$). The richest clusters have half of their total stellar mass bound to satellite galaxies, with the other half being associated with the central galaxy and the diffuse int…
We study the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) for central and satellite galaxies with total dynamical masses above 10^10.5 Msun using the suite of cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations IllustrisTNG. In particular, we quantify environmental effects on satellite populations from TNG50, TNG100, and TNG300 located within the virial radius of group- and cluster-like hosts with total masses of 10^12-15.2 Msun. At fixed stellar mass, the satellite SHMR exhibits a distinct shift towards lower dynamical mass compared to the SHMR of centrals. Conversely, at fixed dynamical mass, satellite …
We present the first results from applying the Santa Cruz semi-analytic model (SAM) for galaxy formation on merger trees extracted from a dark matter only version of the IllustrisTNG (TNG) simulations. We carry out a statistical comparison between the predictions of the Santa Cruz SAM and TNG for a subset of central galaxy properties at z = 0, with a focus on stellar mass, cold and hot gas mass, star formation rate (SFR), and black hole (BH) mass. We find fairly good agreement between the mean predictions of the two methods for stellar mass functions and the stellar mass vs. halo mass (SMHM) r…
We characterize the photometric and kinematic properties of simulated early-type galaxy (ETG) stellar halos, and compare them to observations. We select a sample of ~1200 ETGs in the TNG100 and TNG50 simulations, spanning a stellar mass range of $10^{10.3}-10^{12}M_{\odot}$ and within the range of (g-r) colour and lambda-ellipticity diagram populated by observed ETGs. We determine photometric parameters, intrinsic shapes, and kinematic observables in their extended stellar halos. We study the variation in kinematics from center to halo and connect it to a change in the intrinsic shape of the g…
We present the full public release of all data from the TNG50, TNG100 and TNG300 simulations of the IllustrisTNG project. IllustrisTNG is a suite of large volume, cosmological, gravo-magnetohydrodynamical simulations run with the moving-mesh code Arepo. TNG includes a comprehensive model for galaxy formation physics, and each TNG simulation self-consistently solves for the coupled evolution of dark matter, cosmic gas, luminous stars, and supermassive blackholes from early time to the present day, z=0. Each of the flagship runs -- TNG50, TNG100, and TNG300 -- are accompanied by lower-resolution…
The relation between the integrated thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) $y$-decrement versus halo mass ($Y$--$M$) can potentially constrain galaxy formation models, if theoretical and observational systematics can be properly assessed. We investigate the $Y$--$M$ relation in the SIMBA and IllustrisTNG-100 cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, quantifying the effects of feedback, line-of-sight projection, and beam convolution. We find that SIMBA's AGN jet feedback generates strong deviations from self-similar expectations for the $Y$--$M$ relation, especially at $M_{500}<10^{13}M_{\odot}$. In SIMB…
We explore the isothermal total density profiles of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the IllustrisTNG simulation. For the selected 559 ETGs at $z = 0$ with stellar mass $10^{10.7}\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \leqslant M_{\ast} \leqslant 10^{11.9}\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$, the total power-law slope has a mean of $\langleγ^{\prime}\rangle = 2.011 \pm 0.007$ and a scatter of $σ_{γ^{\prime}} = 0.171$ over the radial range 0.4 to 4 times the stellar half mass radius. Several correlations between $γ^{\prime}$ and galactic properties including stellar mass, effective radius, stellar surface density, central velocity di…
Recent stellar population analysis of early-type galaxy spectra has demonstrated that the low-mass galaxies in cluster centers have high [$α/\rm Fe$] and old ages characteristic of massive galaxies and unlike the low-mass galaxy population in the outskirts of clusters and fields. This phenomenon has been termed "coordinated assembly" to highlight the fact that the building blocks of massive cluster central galaxies are drawn from a special subset of the overall low-mass galaxy population. Here we explore this idea in the IllustrisTNG simulations, particularly the TNG300 run, in order to unders…
We explore implications of a range of black hole (BH) seeding prescriptions on the formation of the brightest $z\gtrsim6$ quasars in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The underlying galaxy formation model is the same as in IllustrisTNG. Using constrained initial conditions, we study the growth of BHs in rare overdense regions (forming $\gtrsim10^{12}M_{\odot}/h$ halos by $z=7$) using a $(9~\mathrm{Mpc}/h)^3$ simulated volume. BH growth is maximal within halos that are compact and have a low tidal field. For these halos, we consider an array of gas-based seeding prescriptions wherein $M_{\…
Atomic hydrogen (H I) gas, mostly residing in dark matter halos after cosmic reionization, is the fuel for star formation. Its relation with properties of host halo is the key to understand the cosmic H I distribution. In this work, we propose a flexible, empirical model of H I-halo relation. In this model, while the H I mass depends primarily on the mass of host halo, there is also secondary dependence on other halo properties. We apply our model to the observation data of the Arecibo Fast Legacy ALFA Survey (ALFALFA), and find it can successfully fit to the cosmic H I abundance ($Ω_{\rm HI}$…

We explore the radial distribution of satellite galaxies in groups in the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and the IllustrisTNG simulations. Considering groups with masses $12.0 \leq \log_{10} (\mathcal{M}_h / h^{-1} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}) < 14.8$ at $z<0.267$, we find a good agreement between GAMA and a sample of TNG300 groups and galaxies designed to match the GAMA selection. Both display a flat profile in the centre of groups, followed by a decline that becomes steeper towards the group edge, and normalised profiles show no dependence on group mass. Using matched satellites from TNG and …
We study the impact that large-scale perturbations of (i) the matter density and (ii) the primordial gravitational potential with local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) have on galaxy formation using the IllustrisTNG model. We focus on the linear galaxy bias $b_1$ and the coefficient $b_ϕ$ of the scale-dependent bias induced by PNG, which describe the response of galaxy number counts to these two types of perturbations, respectively. We perform our study using separate universe simulations, in which the effect of the perturbations is mimicked by changes to the cosmological parameters: modified…
Stellar halos in early-type galaxies (ETGs) are shaped by their accretion and merger histories. We use a sample of 1114 ETGs in the TNG100 simulation with stellar masses $10^{10.3}\leq M_{*}/M_\odot\leq 10^{12}$, selected at z=0 within the range of g-r colour and lambda-ellipticity diagram populated by observed ETGs. We study how the rotational support and intrinsic shapes of the stellar halos depend on the fraction of accreted stars, overall and separately by major, minor, and mini mergers. Accretion histories in TNG100 ETGs as well as the radial distributions of ex-situ stars $f_{ex}(R)$ str…
We recently developed an automated method, auto-GMM to decompose simulated galaxies. It extracts kinematic structures in an accurate, efficient, and unsupervised way. We use auto-GMM to study the stellar kinematic structures of disk galaxies from the TNG100 run of IllustrisTNG. We identify four to five structures that are commonly present among the diverse galaxy population. Structures having strong to moderate rotation are defined as cold and warm disks, respectively. Spheroidal structures dominated by random motions are classified as bulges or stellar halos, depending on how tightly bound th…

We present an artificial neural network design in which past and present-day properties of dark matter halos and their local environment are used to predict time-resolved star formation histories and stellar metallicity histories of central and satellite galaxies. Using data from the IllustrisTNG simulations, we train a TensorFlow-based neural network with two inputs: a standard layer with static properties of the dark matter halo, such as halo mass and starting time; and a recurrent layer with variables such as overdensity and halo mass accretion rate, evaluated at multiple time steps from $0…
We present the 3-{\it dimensional} intrinsic alignment power spectra between the projected 2d galaxy shape/spin and the 3d tidal field across $0.1<k/h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}<60$ using cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, Illustris-TNG300, at redshifts ranging from $0.3$ to $2$. The shape-tidal field alignment increases with galaxy mass and the linear alignment coefficient $A_{\rm IA}$, defined with respect to the primordial tidal field, is found to have weak redshift dependence. We also show a promising detection of the shape/spin-tidal field alignments for stellar mass limited samples and a weak or…
