Rare-earth ion doped crystals have proven to be solid platforms for implementing quantum memories. Their potential use for integrated photonics with large multiplexing capability and unprecedented coherence times is at the core of their attractiveness. The best performances of these ions are however usually obtained when subject to a dc magnetic field, but consequences of such fields on the quantum memory protocols have only received little attention. In this article, we focus on the effect of a dc bias magnetic field on the population manipulation of non-Kramers ions with nuclear quadrupole states, both in the spin and optical domains, by developing a simple theoretical model. We apply this model to explain experimental observations in a ${}^{151}$Eu:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, and highlight specific consequences on the AFC spin-wave protocol. The developed analysis should allow to predict optimal magnetic field configurations for various protocols.
We explore spin-orbit thermal entanglement in rare-earth ions, based on a witness obtained from mean energies. The entanglement temperature $T_{E}$, below which entanglement emerges, is found to be thousands of kelvin above room temperature for all light rare earths. This demonstrate the robustness to environmental fluctuations of entanglement between internal degrees of freedom of a single ion.
Owing to their long excited state lifetimes, rare-earth ions in crystals are widely used in quantum applications. To allow optical readout of the qubit state of individual ions, we propose to dope the crystal with an additional nearby ancilla ion with a shorter radiative lifetime. We show how a Bayesian analysis exhausts the information about the state of the qubit from the optical signal of the ancilla ion. We study the effects of incoherent processes and propose ways to reduce their effect on the readout. Finally, we extend the architecture to ions residing in two remote cavities, and we sho…
We describe a method for creating small quantum processors in a crystal stoichiometric in an optically active rare earth ion. The crystal is doped with another rare earth, creating an ensemble of identical clusters of surrounding ions, whose optical and hyperfine frequencies are uniquely determined by their spatial position in the cluster. Ensembles of ions in each unique position around the dopant serve as qubits, with strong local interactions between ions in different qubits. These ensemble qubits can each be used as a quantum memory for light, and we show how the interactions between qubit…
We demonstrate optical probing of spectrally resolved single Nd rare-earth ions in yttrium orthovanadate. The ions are coupled to a photonic crystal resonator and show strong enhancement of the optical emission rate via the Purcell effect, resulting in near radiatively limited single photon emission. The measured high coupling cooperativity between a single photon and the ion allows for the observation of coherent optical Rabi oscillations. This could enable optically controlled spin qubits, quantum logic gates, and spin-photon interfaces for future quantum networks.
We propose a scheme for universal quantum computing based on Kramers rare-earth ions. Their nuclear spins in the presence of a Zeeman-split electronic crystal field ground state act as 'passive' qubits which store quantum information. The qubits can be activated optically by fast coherent transitions to excited crystal field states with a magnetic moment. The dipole interaction between these states is used to implement CNOT gates. We compare our proposal with a similar one based on phosphorus donor atoms in silicon and discuss the significantly improved CNOT gate time as compared to rare-earth…

Quantum networks based on optically addressable spin qubits promise to enable secure communication, distributed quantum computing, and tests of fundamental physics. Scaling up quantum networks based on solid-state luminescent centers requires coherent spin and optical transitions coupled to photonic resonators. Here we investigate single $\mathrm{{}^{171}Yb^{3+}}$ ions in yttrium orthovanadate coupled to a nanophotonic cavity. These ions possess optical and spin transitions that are first-order insensitive to magnetic field fluctuations, enabling optical linewidths less than 1 MHz and spin coh…
On-chip nanophotonic cavities will advance quantum information science and measurement because they enable efficient interaction between photons and long-lived solid-state spins, such as those associated with rare-earth ions in crystals. The enhanced photon-ion interaction creates new opportunities for all-optical control using the ac Stark shift. Toward this end, we characterize the ac Stark interaction between off-resonant optical fields and Nd$^{3+}$-ion dopants in a photonic crystal resonator fabricated from yttrium orthovanadate (YVO$_4$). Using photon echo techniques, at a detuning of 16…
Fluoride crystals doped with rare-earth ions (REI) and pair centers in diamond for fast ($10^{-9}\rm{s}$) quantum computers (FQC) are proposed. As specific systems for REI doping, we propose $Ca_{1-x}Sr_{x}F_{2}$ crystals and their analogues. The $^{4}f$-states with different total orbital angular moments of these ions serve as two-level systems (qubits). Suitable REIs are proposed as well. It is established that the pair $SiV$ and $GeV$ centers in diamond are promising systems for fast optical quantum computers operating at elevated temperatures.
In this paper initial experiments towards constructing simple quantum gates in a solid state material are presented. Instead of using specially tailored materials, the aim is to select a subset of randomly distributed ions in the material, which have the interaction necessary to control each other and therefore can be used to do quantum logic operations. The experimental results demonstrate that part of an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line can be selected as a qubit and that a subset of ions in the material can control the resonance frequency of other ions. This opens the way for the c…
We report the measurement of the inhomogeneous linewidth, homogeneous linewidth and spin state lifetime of Pr3+ ions in a novel waveguide architecture. The TeO2 slab waveguide deposited on a bulk Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal allows the 3H4 - 1D2 transition of Pr3+ ions to be probed by the optical evanescent field that extends into the substrate. The 2 GHz inhomogeneous linewidth, the optical coherence time of 70 +- 5 us, and the spin state lifetime of 9.8 +- 0.3 s indicate that the properties of ions interacting with the waveguide mode are consistent with those of bulk ions. This result establishes the…
We report on the implementation of quantum state tomography for an ensemble of Eu$^{3+}$ dopant ions in a \YSO crystal. The tomography was applied to a qubit based on one of the ion's optical transitions. The qubit was manipulated using optical pulses and measurements were made by observing the optical free induction in a phase sensitive manner. Fidelities of $>90$% for the combined preparation and measurement process were achieved. Interactions between the ions due to the change in the ions' permanent electric dipole moment when excited optically were also measured. In light of these results,…
Due to inhomogeneous broadening, the absorption lines of rare-earth-ion dopands in crystals are many order of magnitudes wider than the homogeneous linewidths. Several ways have been proposed to use ions with different inhomogeneous shifts as qubit registers, and to perform gate operations between such registers by means of the static dipole coupling between the ions. In this paper we show that in order to implement high-fidelity quantum gate operations by means of the static dipole interaction, we require the participating ions to be strongly coupled, and that the density of such strongly cou…
Rare-earth ion ensembles doped in single crystals are a promising materials system with widespread applications in optical signal processing, lasing, and quantum information processing. Incorporating rare-earth ions into integrated photonic devices could enable compact lasers and modulators, as well as on-chip optical quantum memories for classical and quantum optical applications. To this end, a thin film single crystalline wafer structure that is compatible with planar fabrication of integrated photonic devices would be highly desirable. However, incorporating rare-earth ions into a thin fil…
Quantum information processing based on magnetic ions are considered potential candidates for applications because they can be modified and scaled up by a variety of chemical methods. For these systems to achieve individual spin addressability and high energy efficiency, we exploited the electric field as a tool to manipulate their quantum behaviours, functioning via spin-orbit coupling. A Ce:YAG single crystal was employed due to that rare-earth ions have strong spin-orbit coupling and with considerations regarding the dynamics and the symmetry requirements. The Stark effect of the Ce3+ ion w…
We demonstrate that experiments measuring the transition energies of rare-earth ions doped in crystalline lattices are sensitive to violations of Local Lorentz Invariance and Einstein's Equivalence Principle. Using the crystal field of LaCl$_{3}$ as an example, we calculate the frame-dependent energy shifts of the transition frequencies between low-lying states of Ce$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, and Er$^{3+}$ dopants in the context of the Standard Model Extension, and show that they have high sensitivity to electron anomalies that break rotational invariance.
We have demonstrated electron-electron and electron-nuclear spin manipulations of Gd3+ ion in CaWO4 crystal. The results suggest that the studied system is perspective for multiqubit implementation in quantum computing.
We develop a theoretical description of a device for coherent conversion of microwave to optical photons. For the device, dopant ions in a crystal are used as three-level systems, and interact with the fields inside overlapping microwave and optical cavities. We develop a model for the cavity fields interacting with an ensemble of ions, and model the ions using an open quantum systems approach, while accounting for the effect of inhomogeneous broadening. Numerical methods are developed to allow us to accurately simulate the device. We also further develop a simplified model, applicable in the …
We present a quantum repeater scheme that is based on individual erbium and europium ions. Erbium ions are attractive because they emit photons at telecommunication wavelength, while europium ions offer exceptional spin coherence for long-term storage. Entanglement between distant erbium ions is created by photon detection. The photon emission rate of each erbium ion is enhanced by a microcavity with high Purcell factor, as has recently been demonstrated. Entanglement is then transferred to nearby europium ions for storage. Gate operations between nearby ions are performed using dynamically co…
The efficiency of laser-cooling relies on the existence of an almost closed optical-transition cycle in the energy spectrum of the considered species. In this respect rare-earth elements exhibit many transitions which are likely to induce noticeable leaks from the cooling cycle. In this work, to determine whether laser-cooling of singly-ionized erbium Er$^+$ is feasible, we have performed accurate electronic-structure calculations of energies and spontaneous-emission Einstein coefficients of Er$^+$, using a combination of \textit{ab initio} and least-square-fitting techniques. We identify five…
The possibility of using mixed crystals highly doped with rare earth ions (REIs) as physical systems for creating fast quantum computers with a sampling time of nanoseconds is discussed. The electronic 4f states of rare earth ions with small values of the diagonal elements of the Judd-Ofelt matrix U(2) are proposed as optical frequency qubit levels. CNOT and other conditional gate operations are performed by exciting the rare earth ion into the 4f state with a large diagonal element of U(2), causing a Stark blockade. It is found that the main interaction responsible for this blockade is the qu…
Most investigations of rare earth ions in solids for quantum information have used rare earth ion doped crystals. Here we analyse the conversion of quantum information from microwave photons to optical frequencies using crystals where the rare earth ions, rather than being dopants, are part of the host crystal. The potential of large ion densities and small linewidths makes such systems very attractive in this application. We show that, as well as high efficiency, large bandwidth conversion is possible. In fact, the collective coupling between the rare earth ions and the optical and microwave …
An overview of current status and prospects of the development of quantum computer hardware based on inorganic crystals doped with rare-earth ions is presented. Major parts of the experimental work in this area has been done in two places, Canberra, Australia and Lund, Sweden, and the present description follows more closely the Lund work. Techniques will be described that include optimal filtering of the initially inhomogeneously broadened profile down to well separated and narrow ensembles, as well as the use of advanced pulse-shaping in order to achieve robust arbitrary single-qubit operati…
Efficient optical pumping is an important tool for state initialization in quantum technologies, such as optical quantum memories. In crystals doped with Kramers rare-earth ions, such as erbium and neodymium, efficient optical pumping is challenging due to the relatively short population lifetimes of the electronic Zeeman levels, of the order of 100 ms at around 4 K. In this article we show that optical pumping of the hyperfine levels in isotopically enriched $^{145}$Nd$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystals is more efficient, owing to the longer population relaxation times of hyperfine levels. By optic…
We perform an investigation into the properties of Pr3+:Y2SiO5 whispering gallery mode resonators as a first step towards achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QED with rare-earth-ion doped crystals. Direct measurement of cavity QED parameters are made using photon echoes, giving good agreement with theoretical predictions. By comparing the ions at the surface of the resonator to those in the center it is determined that the physical process of making the resonator does not negatively affect the properties of the ions. Coupling between the ions and resonator is analyzed through the ob…
The inhomogeneity of an electron spin ensemble as well as fluctuating environment acting upon individual spins drastically shorten the spin coherence time $T_2$ and hinder coherent spin manipulation. We show that this problem can be solved by the simultaneous application of a radiofrequency (rf) field, which stimulates coherent spin precession decoupled from an inhomogeneous environment, and periodic optical pulses, which amplify this precession. The resulting resonance, taking place when the rf field frequency approaches the laser pulse repetition frequency, has a width determined by the spin…
Single dopant atoms or dopant-related defect centers in a solid state matrix provide an attractive platform for quantum simulation of topological states, for quantum computing and communication, due to their potential to realize a scalable architecture compatible with electronic and photonic integrated circuits. The production of such quantum devices calls for deterministic single atom doping techniques because conventional stochastic doping techniques are cannot deliver appropriate architectures. Here, we present the fabrication of arrays of praseodymium color centers in YAG substrates, using…
Several platforms are being considered as hardware for quantum technologies. For quantum computing (QC), superconducting qubits and artificially trapped ions are among the leading platforms, but many others also show promise, e.g. photons, cold atoms, defect centers including Rare-Earth (RE) ions. So far, results are limited to the regime of noisy intermediate scale qubits (NISQ), with a small number of qubits and a limited connectivity, and it is likely that future QC hardware will utilize several existing platforms in different ways. Thus, it currently makes sense to invest resources broadly…
Single rare-earth ions in solids show great potential for quantum applications, including single photon emission, quantum computing, and high-precision sensing. However, homogeneous linewidths observed for single rare-earth ions are orders of magnitude larger than the sub-kilohertz linewidths observed for ensembles in bulk crystals. The spectral broadening creates a significant challenge for achieving entanglement generation and qubit operation with single rare-earth ions, so it is critical to investigate the broadening mechanisms. We report a spectral broadening study on a single Er$^{3+}$ io…
Probing collective spin dynamics is a current challenge in the field of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and has important applications in material analysis and quantum information protocols. Recently, the rare-earth ion doped crystals are an attractive candidate for making long-lived quantum memory. Further enhancement of its performance would benefit from the direct knowledge on the dynamics of nuclear-spin bath in the crystal. Here we detect the collective dynamics of nuclear-spin bath located around the rare-earth ions in a crystal using dynamical decoupling spectroscopy method. From the me…
Continued dimensional scaling of semiconductor devices has driven information technology into vastly diverse applications. As the size of devices approaches fundamental limits, metrology techniques with nanometre resolution and three-dimensional (3D) capabilities are desired for device optimisation. For example, the performance of an ultra-scaled transistor can be strongly influenced by the local electric field and strain. Here we study the spectral response of single erbium ions to applied electric field and strain in a silicon ultra-scaled transistor. Stark shifts induced by both the overall…
We report on a direct measurement of the pair-wise anti-symmetric exchange interaction, known as the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI), in a Nd3+-doped YVO4 crystal. To this end we introduce a broadband electron spin resonance technique coupled with an optical detection scheme which selectively detects only one Nd3+-Nd3+ pair. Using this technique we can fully determine the spin-spin coupling tensor, allowing us to experimentally determine both the strength and direction of the DMI vector. We believe that this ability to fully determine the interaction Hamiltonian is of interest for study…
Atomic and atom-like defects in the solid-state are widely explored for quantum computers, networks and sensors. Rare earth ions are an attractive class of atomic defects that feature narrow spin and optical transitions that are isolated from the host crystal, allowing incorporation into a wide range of materials. However, the realization of long electronic spin coherence times is hampered by magnetic noise from abundant nuclear spins in the most widely studied host crystals. Here, we demonstrate that Er$^{3+}$ ions can be introduced via ion implantation into TiO$_2$, a host crystal that has n…
Flip-flop processes due to magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between neighbouring ions in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals is one of the mechanisms of relaxation between hyperfine levels. Modeling of this mechanism has so far been macroscopic, characterized by an average rate describing the relaxation of all ions. Here however, we present a microscopic model of flip-flop interactions between individual nuclear spins of dopant ions. Every ion is situated in a unique local environment in the crystal, where each ion has different distances and a unique orientation relative to its nearest neighbors,…
We demonstrate the coupling of rare-earth ions locally implanted in a substrate (Gd$^{3+}$ in Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$) to a superconducting NbN lumped-element micro-resonator. The hybrid device is fabricated by a controlled ion implantation of rare-earth ions in well-defined micron-sized areas, aligned to lithographically defined micro-resonators. The technique does not degrade the internal quality factor of the resonators which remain above $10^{5}$. Using microwave absorption spectroscopy we observe electron-spin resonances in good agreement with numerical modelling and extract corresponding couplin…

Ensembles of solid-state optical emitters enable broadband quantum storage and transduction of photonic qubits, with applications in high-rate optical quantum networks for secure communications, global time-keeping, and interconnecting future quantum computers. To realize coherent quantum information transfer using ensembles, spin rephasing techniques are currently used to mitigate fast decoherence resulting from inhomogeneous broadening. Here we use a dense ensemble of neodymium rare-earth ions strongly coupled to a nanophotonic resonator to demonstrate that decoherence of a single photon exc…
Using trapped ions in an entangled state we propose detecting a magnetic dipole of a single atom at distance of a few $μ$m. This requires a measurement of the magnetic field gradient at a level of about 10$^{-13}$ Tesla/$μ$m. We discuss applications e.g. in determining a wide variation of ionic magnetic moments, for investigating the magnetic substructure of ions with a level structure not accessible for optical cooling and detection, and for studying exotic or rare ions, and molecular ions. The scheme may also be used for measureing spin imbalances of neutral atoms or atomic ensembles trapped …
In this work the inhomogeneous (zero-phonon line) and homogeneous line widths, and one projection of the permanent electric dipole moment change for the Ce 4f-5d transition in Y_2SiO_5 were measured in order to investigate the possibility for using Ce as a sensor to detect the hyperfine state of a spatially close-lying Pr or Eu ion. The experiments were carried out on Ce doped or Ce-Pr co-doped single Y_2SiO_5 crystals. The homogeneous line width was measured to be about 3 MHz, which is essentially limited by the excited state lifetime. Based on the line width measurements, the oscillator stre…
Optically addressable spins are actively investigated in quantum communication, processing and sensing. Optical and spin coherence lifetimes, which determine quantum operation fidelity and storage time, are often limited by spin-spin interactions, which can be decreased by polarizing spins in their lower energy state using large magnetic fields and/or mK range temperatures. Here, we show that optical pumping of a small fraction of ions with a fixed frequency laser, coupled with spin-spin interactions and spin diffusion, leads to substantial spin polarization in a paramagnetic rare earth doped …
Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. The strong dispersion is created by semi-permanent but rapidly reprogrammable changes of the rare earth absorption profiles using optical pumping techniques. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Potential applications are discussed.
