Due to inhomogeneous broadening, the absorption lines of rare-earth-ion dopands in crystals are many order of magnitudes wider than the homogeneous linewidths. Several ways have been proposed to use ions with different inhomogeneous shifts as qubit registers, and to perform gate operations between such registers by means of the static dipole coupling between the ions.
In this paper we show that in order to implement high-fidelity quantum gate operations by means of the static dipole interaction, we require the participating ions to be strongly coupled, and that the density of such strongly coupled registers in general scales poorly with register size. Although this is critical to previous proposals which rely on a high density of functional registers, we describe architectures and preparation strategies that will allow scalable quantum computers based on rare-earth-ion doped crystals.
Spontaneous Raman emission in atomic gases provides an attractive source of photon pairs with a controllable delay. We show how this technique can be implemented in solid state systems by appropriately shaping the inhomogeneous broadening. Our proposal is eminently feasible with current technology and provides a realistic solution to entangle remote rare-earth doped solids in a heralded way.
We propose a scheme to couple short single photon pulses to superconducting qubits. An optical photon is first absorbed into an inhomogeneously broadened rare-earth doped crystal using controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening. The optical excitation is then mapped into a spin state using a series of $π$-pulses and subsequently transferred to a superconducting qubit via a microwave cavity. To overcome the intrinsic and engineered inhomogeneous broadening of the optical and spin transitions in rare earth doped crystals, we make use of a special transfer protocol using staggered $π$-pulses.…
We propose a solid-state based superradiance laser which is almost insensitive to the cavity mirror vibration. Therefore, it can compete with the best frequency-stable local oscillators. The long coherence time and the large optical density of rare-earth-ions (REIs) doped solids are employed to find a regime to demonstrate a steady-state laser emission with linewidth smaller than the atomic decay rate. The experimental parameters are discussed and intracavity photon number and laser linewidth are calculated based on the mean-field theory. A procedure for measuring absolute laser linewidth is p…
We present a composite pulse controlled phase gate which together with a bus architecture improves the feasibility of a recent quantum computing proposal based on rare-earth-ion doped crystals. Our proposed gate operation is tolerant to variations between ions of coupling strengths, pulse lengths, and frequency shifts, and it achieves worst case fidelities above 0.999 with relative variations in coupling strength as high as 10% and frequency shifts up to several percent of the resonant Rabi frequency of the laser used to implement the gate. We outline an experiment to demonstrate the creation …
In this paper initial experiments towards constructing simple quantum gates in a solid state material are presented. Instead of using specially tailored materials, the aim is to select a subset of randomly distributed ions in the material, which have the interaction necessary to control each other and therefore can be used to do quantum logic operations. The experimental results demonstrate that part of an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line can be selected as a qubit and that a subset of ions in the material can control the resonance frequency of other ions. This opens the way for the c…
We discuss the issues surrounding the implementation of quantum computation in rare-earth-ion doped solids. We describe a practical scheme for two qubit gate operations which utilise experimentally available interactions between the qubits. Possibilities for a scalable quantum computer are discussed.
By spectrally hole burning an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of ions while applying a controlled perturbation, one can obtain spectral holes that are functionalized for maximum sensitivity to different perturbations. We propose to use such hole burnt structures for the dispersive optical interaction with rare-earth ion dopants whose frequencies are sensitive to crystal strain due to the bending motion of a crystal cantilever. A quantitative analysis shows that good optical sensitivity to the bending motion is obtained if a magnetic field gradient is applied across the crystal during hole b…
Quantum computers based on rare-earth-ion-doped crystals show promising properties in terms of scalability and connectivity if single ions can be used as qubits. Through simulations, we investigate gate operations on such qubits and discuss how gate and system parameters affect gate errors, the required frequency bandwidth per qubit, and the risk of instantaneous spectral diffusion (ISD) occurring. Furthermore, we examine how uncertainties in the system parameters affect the gate errors, and how precisely the system needs to be known. We find gate errors for arbitrary single-qubit gates of $2.…
We characterize the 795 nm $^3$H$_6$ to $^3$H$_4$ transition of Tm$^{3+}$ in a Ti$^{4+}$:LiNbO$_{3}$ waveguide at temperatures as low as 800 mK. Coherence and hyperfine population lifetimes -- up to 117 $μ$s and 2.5 hours, respectively -- exceed those at 3 K at least ten-fold, and are equivalent to those observed in a bulk Tm$^{3+}$:LiNbO$_{3}$ crystal under similar conditions. We also find a transition dipole moment that is equivalent to that of the bulk. Finally, we prepare a 0.5 GHz-bandwidth atomic frequency comb of finesse $>$2 on a vanishing background. These results demonstrate the suit…
We explore spin-orbit thermal entanglement in rare-earth ions, based on a witness obtained from mean energies. The entanglement temperature $T_{E}$, below which entanglement emerges, is found to be thousands of kelvin above room temperature for all light rare earths. This demonstrate the robustness to environmental fluctuations of entanglement between internal degrees of freedom of a single ion.
Quantum memories for light are essential components in quantum technologies like long-distance quantum communication and distributed quantum computing. Recent studies have shown that long optical and spin coherence lifetimes can be observed in rare earth doped nanoparticles, opening exciting possibilities over bulk materials e.g. for enhancing coupling to light and other quantum systems, and material design. Here, we report on coherent light storage in Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_2$O$_3$ nanoparticles using the Stark Echo Modulation Memory (SEMM) quantum protocol. We first measure a nearly constant Stark coe…
Rare-earth doped crystals have long coherence times and the potential to provide quantum interfaces between microwave and optical photons. Such applications benefit from a high cooperativity between the spin ensemble and a microwave cavity -- this motivates an increase in the rare earth ion concentration which in turn impacts the spin coherence lifetime. We measure spin dynamics of two rare-earth spin species, $^{145}$Nd and Yb doped into Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$, coupled to a planar microwave resonator in the high cooperativity regime, in the temperature range 1.2 K to 14 mK. We identify relevant dec…
We present a detailed analysis of a high-bandwidth quantum memory protocol for storing single photons in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. The basic idea is to benefit from a coherent free-induced decay type re-emission which occurs naturally when a photon with a broadband spectrum is absorbed by a narrow atomic transition in an optically dense ensemble. This allows for a high-bandwidth memory for realistic material parameters. Long storage time and on-demand readout are obtained by means of spins states in a lambda-type configuration, through the transfer of the optical coherence to a spin cohe…
In Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$, we demonstrate the selective optical addressing of the $^{89}$Y$^{3+}$ nuclear spins through their superhyperfine coupling with the Er$^{3+}$ electronic spins possessing large Landé $g$-factors. We experimentally probe the electron-nuclear spin mixing with photon echo techniques and validate our model. The site-selective optical addressing of the Y$^{3+}$ nuclear spins is designed by adjusting the magnetic field strength and orientation. This constitutes an important step towards the realization of long-lived solid-state qubits optically addressed by telecom photons.
Probing collective spin dynamics is a current challenge in the field of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and has important applications in material analysis and quantum information protocols. Recently, the rare-earth ion doped crystals are an attractive candidate for making long-lived quantum memory. Further enhancement of its performance would benefit from the direct knowledge on the dynamics of nuclear-spin bath in the crystal. Here we detect the collective dynamics of nuclear-spin bath located around the rare-earth ions in a crystal using dynamical decoupling spectroscopy method. From the me…
We present two protocols for constructing quantum processor nodes in randomly doped rare-earth-ion crystals and analyze their properties. By varying the doping concentration and the accessible laser tunability, the processor nodes can contain anywhere from only a few tens to almost $1000$ qubits. Furthermore, the average number of qubits each qubit can interact with, denoted by the connectivity, can be partly tailored to lie between just a few and roughly one hundred. We also study how a limited tunability of the laser affects the results, and conclude that a tuning range of $100$ GHz limits t…
We propose a scheme for universal quantum computing based on Kramers rare-earth ions. Their nuclear spins in the presence of a Zeeman-split electronic crystal field ground state act as 'passive' qubits which store quantum information. The qubits can be activated optically by fast coherent transitions to excited crystal field states with a magnetic moment. The dipole interaction between these states is used to implement CNOT gates. We compare our proposal with a similar one based on phosphorus donor atoms in silicon and discuss the significantly improved CNOT gate time as compared to rare-earth…
We study the possibility of using single rare-earth ions coupled to a photonic cavity with high cooperativity for performing non-destructive measurements of photons, which would be useful for global quantum networks and photonic quantum computing. We calculate the achievable fidelity as a function of the parameters of the rare-earth ion and photonic cavity, which include the ion's optical and spin dephasing rates, the cavity linewidth, the single photon coupling to the cavity, and the detection efficiency. We suggest a promising experimental realization using current state of the art technolog…
The effect of instantaneous spectral diffusion (ISD) on gate operations in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals is an important question to answer for the future of rare-earth quantum computing. Here we present a microscopic modeling that highlights the stochastic nature of the phenomenon, and use it to investigate ISD errors on single-qubit gate operations. Furthermore, we present a method to estimate the total error from many different error sources by only studying subsystems containing one error source at a time. This allows us to estimate the total ISD error from all non-qubit dopants in the vic…
Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. The strong dispersion is created by semi-permanent but rapidly reprogrammable changes of the rare earth absorption profiles using optical pumping techniques. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Potential applications are discussed.
We investigate the possibility of achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics using rare earth ions as impurities in monolithic optical resonators. We conclude that due to the weak oscillator strengths of the rare earths, it may be possible but difficult, to reach the regime where the single photon Rabi frequency is large compared to both the cavity and atom decay rates. However reaching the regime where the saturation photon and atom numbers are less than one should be much more achievable. We show that in this `bad cavity' regime, transfer of quantum states and an …
We perform an investigation into the properties of Pr3+:Y2SiO5 whispering gallery mode resonators as a first step towards achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QED with rare-earth-ion doped crystals. Direct measurement of cavity QED parameters are made using photon echoes, giving good agreement with theoretical predictions. By comparing the ions at the surface of the resonator to those in the center it is determined that the physical process of making the resonator does not negatively affect the properties of the ions. Coupling between the ions and resonator is analyzed through the ob…
We investigate coherent propagation through a large optical density Tm$^{3+}$:YAG crystal. Using an ultra-stable laser, fiber filtering and site selection, we investigate the transmitted pulse temporal profile. The plane wave condition is satisfied by selection of the illuminated spot central area. We pay special attention to $π$-pulse transmission in the prospect of implementing optical quantum storage protocols.
Achieving spin squeezing within solid-state devices is a long standing research goal, due to the promise of their particularities, for instance their long coherence times, the possibility of low-temperature experiments or integration of entanglement-assisted sensors on-chip. In this work, we investigate an interferometer-free four-color scheme to achieve spin squeezing of rare-earth ion-doped crystals. The proposal relies on an analytic derivation that starts from a Tavis-Cummings model for light-matter interaction, providing microscopic insights onto spin-squeezing generation. We evidence spi…
Nano-structuring impurity-doped crystals affects the phonon density of states and thereby modifies the atomic dynamics induced by interaction with phonons. We propose the use of nano-structured materials in the form of powders or phononic bandgap crystals to enable or improve persistent spectral hole-burning and coherence for inhomogeneously broadened absorption lines in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals. This is crucial for applications such as ultra-precise radio-frequency spectrum analyzers and optical quantum memories. As an example, we discuss how phonon engineering can enable spectral hole b…
This work demonstrates strong coupling regime between an Erbium ion spin ensemble and microwave Hybrid Cavity-Whispering Gallery Modes in a Yttrium Aluminium Garnet dielectric crystal. Coupling strengths of $220$~MHz and mode quality factors in excess of $10^6$ are demonstrated. Moreover, the magnetic response of high-Q modes demonstrates behaviour which is unusual for paramagnetic systems. This behaviour includes hysteresis and memory effects. Such qualitative change of the system's magnetic field response is interpreted as a phase transition of Rare Earth ion impurities. This phenomenon is s…
In many important situations the dominant dephasing mechanism in cryogenic rare-earth-ion doped systems is due to magnetic field fluctuations from spins in the host crystal. Operating at a magnetic field where a transition has a zero first-order-Zeeman (ZEFOZ) shift can greatly reduce this dephasing. Here we identify the location of transitions with zero first-order Zeeman shift for optical transitions in Pr3+:YAG and for spin transitions in Er3+:Y2SiO5. The long coherence times that ZEFOZ would enable would make Pr3+:YAG a strong candidate for achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QE…
Most investigations of rare earth ions in solids for quantum information have used rare earth ion doped crystals. Here we analyse the conversion of quantum information from microwave photons to optical frequencies using crystals where the rare earth ions, rather than being dopants, are part of the host crystal. The potential of large ion densities and small linewidths makes such systems very attractive in this application. We show that, as well as high efficiency, large bandwidth conversion is possible. In fact, the collective coupling between the rare earth ions and the optical and microwave …
Optically addressable spins are actively investigated in quantum communication, processing and sensing. Optical and spin coherence lifetimes, which determine quantum operation fidelity and storage time, are often limited by spin-spin interactions, which can be decreased by polarizing spins in their lower energy state using large magnetic fields and/or mK range temperatures. Here, we show that optical pumping of a small fraction of ions with a fixed frequency laser, coupled with spin-spin interactions and spin diffusion, leads to substantial spin polarization in a paramagnetic rare earth doped …
The possibility of using mixed crystals highly doped with rare earth ions (REIs) as physical systems for creating fast quantum computers with a sampling time of nanoseconds is discussed. The electronic 4f states of rare earth ions with small values of the diagonal elements of the Judd-Ofelt matrix U(2) are proposed as optical frequency qubit levels. CNOT and other conditional gate operations are performed by exciting the rare earth ion into the 4f state with a large diagonal element of U(2), causing a Stark blockade. It is found that the main interaction responsible for this blockade is the qu…
Quantum light-matter interfaces (QLMIs) connecting stationary qubits to photons will enable optical networks for quantum communications, precise global time keeping, photon switching, and studies of fundamental physics. Rare-earth-ion (REI) doped crystals are state-of-the-art materials for optical quantum memories and quantum transducers between optical photons, microwave photons and spin waves. Here we demonstrate coupling of an ensemble of neodymium REIs to photonic nano-cavities fabricated in the yttrium orthosilicate host crystal. Cavity quantum electrodynamics effects including Purcell en…
Atomic frequency combs memories that coherently store optical signals are a key building block for optical quantum computers and quantum networks. Integrating such memories into compact and chip-scale devices is essential for scalable quantum technology, but to date most demonstrations have been in bulk materials or waveguides with large cross-sections, or using fabrication techniques not easily adaptable to wafer scale processing. We demonstrate compact chip-integrated atomic frequency comb storage in rare earth doped thin-film lithium niobate. Our optical memory exhibits a broad storage band…
Long-lived population storage in optically pumped levels of rare-earth ions doped into solids, referred to as persistent spectral hole burning, is of significant fundamental and technological interest. However, the demonstration of deep and persistent holes in rare-earth ion doped amorphous hosts, e.g. glasses, has remained an open challenge since many decades -- a fact that motivates our work towards a better understanding of the interaction between impurities and vibrational modes in glasses. Here we report the first observation and detailed characterization of such holes in an erbium-doped …
Rare-earth ion ensembles doped in single crystals are a promising materials system with widespread applications in optical signal processing, lasing, and quantum information processing. Incorporating rare-earth ions into integrated photonic devices could enable compact lasers and modulators, as well as on-chip optical quantum memories for classical and quantum optical applications. To this end, a thin film single crystalline wafer structure that is compatible with planar fabrication of integrated photonic devices would be highly desirable. However, incorporating rare-earth ions into a thin fil…
We demonstrate the coupling of rare-earth ions locally implanted in a substrate (Gd$^{3+}$ in Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$) to a superconducting NbN lumped-element micro-resonator. The hybrid device is fabricated by a controlled ion implantation of rare-earth ions in well-defined micron-sized areas, aligned to lithographically defined micro-resonators. The technique does not degrade the internal quality factor of the resonators which remain above $10^{5}$. Using microwave absorption spectroscopy we observe electron-spin resonances in good agreement with numerical modelling and extract corresponding couplin…
