The problem of quantizing a particle on a 2-sphere has been treated by numerous approaches, including Isham's global method based on unitary representations of a symplectic symmetry group that acts transitively on the phase space. Here we reconsider this simple model using Isham's scheme, enriched by a magnetic flux through the sphere via a modification of the symplectic form. To maintain complete generality we construct the Hilbert space directly from the symmetry algebra, which is manifestly gauge-invariant, using ladder operators. In this way, we recover algebraically the complete classification of quantizations, and the corresponding energy spectra for the particle. The famous Dirac quantization condition for the monopole charge follows from the requirement that the classical and quantum Casimir invariants match. In an appendix we explain the relation between this approach and the more common one that assumes from the outset a Hilbert space of wave functions that are sections of a nontrivial line bundle over the sphere, and show how the Casimir invariants of the algebra determine the bundle topology.
We addressed quantization phenomena in transport and vortex/precession-motion of low-dimensional systems, stationary quantization of confined motion in phase space due to oscillatory dynamics or compacti fication of space and time for steady-state systems (e.g., particle in a box or torus, Brillouin zone, and Matsubara time zone or Matsubara quantized frequencies), and the quantization of sources. We discuss how the self-consistent Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition permeates the relationships between the quantization of integer Hall effect, fractional quantum Hall effect, the Berezenskii-…
We examine relationships between various quantization schemes for an electrically charged particle in the field of a magnetic monopole. Quantization maps are defined in invariant geometrical terms, appropriate to the case of nontrivial topology, and are constructed for two operator representations. In the first setting, the quantum operators act on the Hilbert space of sections of a nontrivial complex line bundle associated with the Hopf bundle, whereas the second approach uses instead a quaternionic Hilbert module of sections of a trivial quaternionic line bundle. We show that these two quant…
We present an alternative description of magnetic monopoles by lifting quantum mechanics from 3-dimensional space into a one with 2 complex dimensions. Magnetic monopoles are realized as a generalization of the considered states. Usual algebraic relations and magnetic fields describing monopoles are reproduced, with the Dirac quantization condition satisfied naturally.
Starting from the quaternionic quantization scheme proposed by Emch and Jadczyk for describing the motion of a quantum particle in the magnetic monopole field, we derive an algorithm for finding the differential representation of the star product generated by the quaternionic Weyl correspondence on phase-space functions. This procedure is illustrated by the explicit calculation of the star product up to the second order in the Planck constant. Our main tools are an operator analog of the twisted convolution and the Zassenhaus formula for the products of exponentials of noncommuting operators.
Magnetic monopole, a hypothetical elementary particle with isolated magnetic pole, is crucial for the quantization of electric charge. In recent years, analogues of magnetic monopoles, represented by topological defects in parameter spaces, have been studied in a wide range of physical systems. These works mainly focused on Abelian Dirac monopoles in spin-1/2 or non-Abelian Yang monopoles in spin-3/2 systems. Here we propose to realize three types of spin-1 topological monopoles and study their geometric properties using the parameter space formed by three hyperfine states of ultracold atoms c…
In this paper we correct previous work on magnetic charge plus a photon mass. We show that contrary to previous claims this system has a very simple, closed form solution which is the Dirac string potential multiplied by a exponential decaying part. Interesting features of this solution are discussed, namely, (i) the Dirac string becomes a real feature of the solution, (ii) the breaking of gauge symmetry via the photon mass leads to a breaking of the rotational symmetry of the monopole's magnetic field, (iii) the Dirac quantization condition is potentially altered.
The geometric effects of two-dimensional curved systems have been an interesting topic for a long time. A Möbius surface is specifically considered. For a relativistic particle confined to the nontrivial surface, we give the effective Dirac equation in the thin-layer quantization formalism, and we find a geometric gauge potential that results from the rotation transformation of the local frame moving on Möbius strip, and an effective mass that is from the rescaling transformation. Intriguingly, the geometric gauge potential can play a role of monopole magnetic field for the particles with spin…
