It is generally accepted that the Coulomb crystal model can be used to describe matter in the neutron star crust. In [1] we study the properties of deformed Coulomb crystals and how their stability depends on the polarization of the electron background; the breaking stress in the crust $σ_{\max}$ at zero temperature was calculated based on the analysis of the electrostatic energy and the phonon spectrum of the Coulomb crystal. In this paper, I briefly discuss the influence of zero-point and thermal contributions on $σ_{\max}$.
Force-free pulsar magnetospheres develop a large scale poloidal electric current circuit that flows along open magnetic field lines from the neutron star to the termination shock. The electric current closes through the interior of the neutron star where it provides the torque that spins-down the star. In the present work, we study the internal electric current in an axisymmetric rotator. We evaluate the path of the electric current by requiring the minimization of internal Ohmic losses. We find that, in millisecond pulsars, the current reaches the base of the crust, while in pulsars with peri…
We study breaking stress of deformed Coulomb crystals in a neutron star crust, taking into account electron plasma screening of ion-ion interaction; calculated breaking stress is fitted as a function of electron screening parameter. We apply the results for analyzing torsional oscillation modes in the crust of a non-magnetic star. We present exact analytic expression for the fundamental frequencies of such oscillations and show that the frequencies of all torsional oscillations are insensitive to the presence of the outer neutron star crust. The results can be useful in theoretical modeling of…
This paper considers the yielding response of a neutron star crust to smooth, unbalanced Maxwell stresses imposed at the core-crust boundary, and the coupling of the dynamic crust to the external magnetic field. Stress buildup and yielding in a magnetar crust is a global phenomenon: an elastic distortion radiating from one plastically deforming zone is shown to dramatically increase the creep rate in distant zones. Runaway creep to dynamical rates is shown to be possible, being enhanced by in situ heating and suppressed by thermal conduction and shearing of an embedded magnetic field. A global…
We consider the dynamics of a mechanical failure induced by a shear stress in a strongly magnetized neutron-star crust. We show that even if the elastic properties of the crust allow the creation of a shear crack, the strongly sheared magnetic field around the crack leads to a back-reaction from the Lorentz force which does not allow large relative displacement of the crack surfaces. Instead, the global evolution of the crack proceeds on a slow resistive time scale, and is unable to release any substantial mechanical energy. Our calculations demostrate that for {\it some} magnetic-field config…
Magnetar activity is generated by shear motions of the neutron star surface, which relieve internal magnetic stresses. An analogy with earthquakes and faults is problematic, as the crust is permeated by strong magnetic fields, which greatly constrain crustal displacements. We describe a new deformation mechanism that is specific to strongly magnetized neutron stars. The magnetically stressed crust begins to move because of a thermoplastic instability, which launches a wave that shears the crust and burns its magnetic energy. The propagating wave front resembles the deflagration front in combus…
Under normal conditions in a neutron-star crust, ions are locked in place in the crustal lattice and only electrons are mobile, and magnetic-field evolution is thus directly related to the electron velocity. The evolution, however, builds magnetic stresses that can become sufficiently large for the crust to exceed its elastic limit, and to flow plastically. We consider the nature of this plastic flow and the back-reaction on the crustal magnetic field evolution. We formulate a plane-parallel model for the local failure, showing that surface motions are inevitable once the crust yields, in the …
Free energy, internal energy, and specific heat for each of the three phonon spectrum branches of a magnetized Coulomb crystal with body-centered cubic lattice are calculated by numerical integration over the Brillouin zone in the range of magnetic fields $B$ and temperatures $T$, such that $0 \le ω_{\rm B}/ω_{\rm p}\le 10^3$ and $10^{-4} \le T/T_{\rm p} \le 10^4$. In this case, $ω_{\rm B}$ is the ion cyclotron frequency, $ω_{\rm p}$ and $T_{\rm p}$ are the ion plasma frequency and plasma temperature, respectively. The results of numerical calculations are approximated by simple analytical for…
The thermal conductivity of a dense {\it multi-component} plasma is critical to the modeling of accreting neutron stars. To this end, we perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to calculate the static structure factor of the dense multi-component plasma in the neutron star crust from near the photosphere-ocean boundary to the vicinity of the neutron drip point. The structure factors are used to validate a microscopic linear mixing rule that is valid for arbitrarily complex plasmas over a wide range of Coulomb couplings. The microscopic mixing rule in turn implies and validates the l…

Corrections to elastic moduli, including the effective shear modulus, of a solid neutron star crust due to electron screening are calculated. At any given mass density, the crust is modelled as a body-centred cubic Coulomb crystal of fully ionized atomic nuclei of a single type with a polarizable charge-compensating electron background. Motion of the nuclei is neglected. The electron polarization is described by a simple Thomas-Fermi model of exponential electron screening. The results of numerical calculations are fitted by convenient analytic formulae. They should be used for precise neutron…
Although crystallized neutron star crust is responsible for many fascinating observational phenomena, its actual microscopic structure in tremendous gravitational and magnetic fields is not understood. Here we show that in a non-uniform magnetic field, three-dimensional ionic Coulomb crystals comprising the crust may stretch or shrink while their electrostatic pressure becomes anisotropic. The pressure depends non-linearly on the magnitude of the stretch, so that a continuous magnetic field evolution may result in an abrupt crystal elongation or contraction. This may provide a trigger for magn…
Magnetic field evolution in neutron-star crusts is driven by the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation, for as long as the crust is sufficiently strong to absorb Maxwell stresses exerted by the field and thus make the momentum equation redundant. For the strongest neutron-star fields, however, stresses build to the point of crustal failure, at which point the standard evolution equations are no longer valid. Here, we study the evolution of the magnetic field of the crust up to and beyond crustal failure, whence the crust begins to flow plastically. We perform global axisymmetric evolutions, explor…
We examine the effects of plastic flow that appear in a neutron-star crust when a magnetic stress exceeds the threshold. The dynamics involved are described using the Navier--Stokes equation comprising the viscous-flow term, and the velocity fields for the global circulation are determined using quasi-stationary approximation. We simulate the magnetic-field evolution by taking into consideration the Hall drift, Ohmic dissipation, and fluid motion induced by the Lorentz force. The decrease in the magnetic energy is enhanced, as the energy converts to the bulk motion energy and heat. It is found…
We examine the equilibrium of a magnetized neutron-star-crust. We calculate axially symmetric models in which an elastic force balances solenoidal motion driven by a Lorentz force. A large variety of equilibrium models are allowed by incorporating the elastic shear deformation; in addition, toroidal-magnetic-field dominated models are available. These results remarkably differ from those in barotropic fluid stars. We demonstrate some models wherein the magnetic energy exceeds the elastic energy. The excess comes from the fact that a large amount of magnetic energy is associated with the irrota…
The strong magnetic fields found on the surface of magnetars are known to have profound effects in the physics of atoms in magnetar envelopes. We argue that the Friedel oscillations in the Coulomb force between the ions due to electron shielding can, for certain values of the parameters, be the dominant effect determining the crystal structure in the outer crust of magnetars. We estimate the densities and magnetic fields for which this occurs, compute some of the elastic moduli and lattice phonon dispersion relations in this "Friedel crystal" phase.
We use Molecular Dynamics simulations to study the formation and stability of single and multicomponent lattices in the outer crust of Neutron Stars. Including an improved treatment for Gaussian charge distributions of ions we obtain the expressions for the potential and forces arising from electron screened Coulomb interactions using the efficient Ewald sum procedure. %in the plasma. Our findings show that for baryon densities in the outer crust a point-like ion treatment can not fully describe the crystallization behaviour thus the Coulomb parameter, $Γ_C$, along with the usual screening par…
Neutron stars host the strongest magnetic fields that we know of in the Universe. Their magnetic fields are the main means of generating their radiation, either magnetospheric or through the crust. Moreover, the evolution of the magnetic field has been intimately related to explosive events of magnetars, which host strong magnetic fields, and their persistent thermal emission. The evolution of the magnetic field in the crusts of neutron stars has been described within the framework of the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation. Yet, this description is limited by the fact that the Maxwell stresses …
Based on the formalism by Kaminker et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 343 (1999) 1009) we derive an analytic approximation for neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung emissivity due to scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei in the neutron star crust of any realistic composition. The emissivity is expressed through generalized Coulomb logarithm which we fit by introducing an effective potential of electron-nucleus scattering. In addition, we study the conditions at which the neutrino bremsstrahlung in the crust is affected by strong magnetic fields. The results can be applied for modelling of many phenomena in …
I discuss elastic properties of neutron star crust in the framework of static Coulomb solid model when atomic nuclei are treated as non-vibrating point charges; electron screening is neglected. The results are also applicable for solidified white dwarf cores and other materials, which can be modeled as Coulomb solids (dusty plasma, trapped ions, etc.). I demonstrate that the Coulomb part of the stress-strain tensor has additional symmetry: contraction $B_{ijil}=0$. It does not depend on the structure (crystalline or amorphous) and composition. I show as a result of this symmetry the effective …

Pulsars show a steady decrease in their rotational frequency, occasionally interrupted by sudden spin-ups called glitches, whose physical origin is still a mystery. One suggested explanation for at least the small glitches are starquakes, that is, failures of the solid neutron star crust, in which the progressive reduction in the centrifugal force deforms the star, stressing the solid until it breaks. This produces a spin-up, dissipating energy inside the star. We analyze the deformations produced by the decreasing centrifugal force, modeling the star with a fluid core and a solid crust, each …
We investigate the magneto--elastic equilibrium of a neutron star crust and magnetic energy stored by the elastic force. The solenoidal motion driven by the Lorentz force can be controlled by the magnetic elastic force, so that conditions for the magnetic field strength and geometry are less restrictive. For equilibrium models, the minor solenoidal part of the magnetic force is balanced by a weak elastic force because the irrotational part is balanced by the dominant gravity and pressure forces. Therefore, a strong magnetic field may be confined in the interior, regardless of poloidal or toroi…
We study the effects of the symmetry energy on the neutron drip density and properties of nuclei in neutron star crusts. The nonuniform matter around the neutron drip point is calculated by using the Thomas--Fermi approximation with the relativistic mean-field model. The neutron drip density and the composition of the crust are found to be correlated with the symmetry energy and its slope. We compare the self-consistent Thomas--Fermi approximation with other treatments of surface and Coulomb energies and find that these finite-size effects play an essential role in determining the equilibrium …
We study electrical and thermal conductivities of degenerate electrons emitting and absorbing phonons in a strongly magnetized crystalline neutron star crust. We take into account modification of the phonon spectrum of a Coulomb solid of ions caused by a strong magnetic field. Boltzmann transport equation is solved using a generalized variational method. The ensuing three-dimensional integrals over the transferred momenta are evaluated by two different numerical techniques, the Monte-Carlo method and a regular integration over the first Brillouin zone. The results of the two numerical approach…
We study the long-wavelength excitations of the inner crust of neutron stars, considering three phases: cubic crystal at low densities, rods and plates near the core-crust transition. To describe the phonons, we write an effective Lagrangian density in terms of the coarse-grained phase of the neutron superfluid gap and of the average displacement field of the clusters. The kinetic energy, including the entrainment of the neutron gas by the clusters, is obtained within a superfluid hydrodynamics approach. The potential energy is determined from a model where clusters and neutron gas are conside…
Crustquake events may be connected with both rapid spin-up `glitches' within the regular slowdown of neutron stars, and high-energy magnetar flares. We argue that magnetic field decay builds up stresses in a neutron star's crust, as the elastic shear force resists the Lorentz force's desire to rearrange the global magnetic-field equilibrium. We derive a criterion for crust-breaking induced by a changing magnetic-field configuration, and use this to investigate strain patterns in a neutron star's crust for a variety of different magnetic-field models. Universally, we find that the crust is most…
We introduce a Newtonian model for the deformations of a compressible, autogravitating, and continuously stratified neutron star. The present framework can be applied to a number of astrophysical scenarios as it allows us to account for a great variety of loading forces. In this first analysis, the model is used to study the impact of a frozen adiabatic index in the estimate of rotation-induced deformations: we assume a polytropic equation of state for the matter at equilibrium but, since chemical reactions may be slow, the perturbations with respect to the unstressed configuration are modelle…
The body-centered cubic Coulomb crystal of ions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field is studied using the rigid electron background approximation. The phonon mode spectra are calculated for a wide range of magnetic field strengths and for several orientations of the field in the crystal. The phonon spectra are used to calculate the phonon contribution to the crystal energy, entropy, specific heat, Debye-Waller factor of ions, and the rms ion displacements from the lattice nodes for a broad range of densities, temperatures, chemical compositions, and magnetic fields. Strong magnetic fiel…
As evidenced by the coincident detections of GW170817 and GRB 170817A, short gamma-ray bursts are likely associated with neutron star-neutron star merger events. Although rare, some bursts display episodes of early emission, with precursor flares being observed up to $\sim 10$ seconds prior to the main burst. As the stars inspiral due to gravitational wave emission, the exertion of mutual tidal forces leads to the excitation of stellar oscillation modes, which may come into resonance with the orbital motion. Mode amplitudes increase substantially during a period of resonance as tidal energy is…
We advance a "Solar flare" model of magnetar activity, whereas a slow evolution of the magnetic field in the upper crust, driven by electron MHD (EMHD) flows, twists the external magnetic flux tubes, producing persistent emission, bursts and flares. At the same time the neutron star crust plastically relieves the imposed magnetic field stress, limiting the strain $ ε_t $ to values well below the critical strain $ ε_{crit}$ of a brittle fracture, $ ε_t \sim 10^{-2}ε_{crit} $. Magnetar-like behavior, occurring near the magnetic equator, takes place in all neutron stars, but to a different extent…
This study investigates elastic deformation driven by the Hall drift in a magnetized neutron-star crust. Although the dynamic equilibrium initially holds without elastic displacement, the magnetic-field evolution changes the Lorentz force over a secular timescale, which inevitably causes the elastic deformation to settle in a new force balance. Accordingly, elastic energy is accumulated, and the crust is eventually fractured beyond a particular threshold. We assume that the magnetic field is axially symmetric, and we explicitly calculate the breakup time, maximum elastic energy stored in the c…
Braking index measurements of young radio pulsars are all smaller than the value expected for spin down by magnetic dipole braking. We investigate magnetic field evolution in the neutron star crust due to Hall drift as an explanation for observed braking indices. Using numerical simulations and a semi-analytic model, we show that a $\approx 10^{14}\ {\rm G}$ quadrupolar toroidal field in the neutron star crust at birth leads to growth of the dipole moment at a rate large enough to agree with measured braking indices. A key factor is the density at which the crust yields to magnetic stresses th…
We study the low-energy collective excitations of the neutron star inner crust, where a neutron superfluid coexists with a Coulomb lattice of nuclei. The dispersion relation of the modes is calculated systematically from a microscopic theory including neutron band structure effects. These effects are shown to lead to a strong mixing between the Bogoliubov-Anderson bosons of the neutron superfluid and the longitudinal crystal lattice phonons. In addition, the speed of the transverse shear mode is greatly reduced as a large fraction of superfluid neutrons are entrained by nuclei. Not only does t…
Mountains on rapidly rotating neutron stars efficiently radiate gravitational waves. The maximum possible size of these mountains depends on the breaking strain of neutron star crust. With multi-million ion molecular dynamics simulations of Coulomb solids representing the crust, we show that the breaking strain of pure single crystals is very large and that impurities, defects, and grain boundaries only modestly reduce the breaking strain to around 0.1. Due to the collective behavior of the ions during failure found in our simulations, the neutron star crust is likely very strong and can suppo…
Using relativistic mean-field models, the formation of clusterized matter, as the one expected to exist in the inner crust of neutron stars, is determined under the effect of strong magnetic fields. As already predicted from a calculation of the unstable modes resulting from density fluctuations at subsaturation densities, we confirm in the present work that for magnetic field intensities of the order of $\approx 5 \times 10^{16}$ G to $5 \times 10^{17}$ G, pasta phases may occur for densities well above the zero-field crust-core transition density. This confirms that the extension of the crus…
The interaction between nuclei in the inner crust of neutron stars consists of two contributions, the so-called "direct" interaction and an "induced" one due to density changes in the neutron fluid. For large nuclear separations $r$ the contributions from nuclear forces to each of these terms are shown to be nonzero. In the static limit they are equal in magnitude but have opposite signs and they cancel exactly. We analyze earlier results on effective interactions in the light of this finding. We consider the properties of long-wavelength collective modes and, in particular, calculate the degr…
The interior of a neutron star (NS) is usually assumed to be made of cold catalyzed matter. However, the outer layers are unlikely to remain in full equilibrium during the formation of the star and its cooling, especially after crystallization. We study the cooling and equilibrium composition of the outer layers of a NS down to crystallization. Here the impurity parameter, usually a free parameter in cooling simulations, is calculated self-consistently using a microscopic model for which a unified equation of state has recently been determined. We follow the evolution of the nuclear distributi…
We define `astromaterial science' as the study of materials in astronomical objects that are qualitatively denser than materials on earth. Astromaterials can have unique properties related to their large density, though they may be organized in ways similar to more conventional materials. By analogy to terrestrial materials, we divide our study of astromaterials into hard and soft and discuss one example of each. The hard astromaterial discussed here is a crystalline lattice, such as the Coulomb crystals in the interior of cold white dwarfs and in the crust of neutron stars, while the soft ast…

Neutron stars harbour extremely strong magnetic fields within their solid outer crust. The topology of this field strongly influences the surface temperature distribution, and hence the star's observational properties. In this work, we present the first realistic simulations of the coupled crustal magneto-thermal evolution of isolated neutron stars in three dimensions with account for neutrino emission, obtained with the pseudo-spectral code Parody. We investigate both the secular evolution, especially in connection with the onset of instabilities during the Hall phase, and the short-term evol…
The most strongly magnetized neutron stars, the magnetars, have spectacular outbursts of gamma-ray flares powered by decay of the magnetic field. The rapidly changing field is strong enough that it should be able to stress and rupture the star's crust, with potentially interesting seismic consequences. This was confirmed in dramatic fashion a few years ago with the discovery of long-lived seismic vibrations excited by rare giant flares. The starquakes associated with the giant flares are, it seems, so catastrophic that they leave the whole star ringing. These discoveries have opened up the pos…
The strength of neutron star crust is crucial for modelling magnetar flares, pulsar glitches and gravitational wave emission. We aim to shed some light on this problem by analysing uniaxial stretch deformation (elongation and contraction) of perfect body-centered cubic Coulomb crystals, paying special attention to the inherent anisotropy of this process. Our analysis is based on the semi-analytical approach of Baiko and Kozhberov (2017), which, for any uniform deformation, allows one to calculate, in fully non-linear regime, critical deformation parameters beyond which the lattice loses its dy…
Neutron stars are the densest objects in the Universe. In this paper we consider so-called inner crust - the layer, where neutron-excess nuclei are immersed into degenerate gas of electrons and sea of quasi-free neutrons. It was generally believed that spherical nuclei become unstable with respect to quadrupole deformations at high densities and here we consider this instability. Within perturbative approach we show that spherical nuclei with equilibrium number density are, in fact, stable with respect to infinitesimal quadrupole deformation. This is due to background of degenerate electrons a…
