Motivated by the recent upsurge in research of three-dimensional topological semimetals (SMs), we theoretically study the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities in node-line SMs with and without the chirality and obtain the analytical expressions. We find that unique toroidal Fermi surface (FS) in nodal-line SMs, distinctly different from the spheroid FS in the SMs with the point nodes, has significant influences on the RKKY interaction, leading to strong anisotropic oscillation and unique decay features. In the direction perpendicular to node-line plane, as usual, there is only one oscillation period related to the Fermi energy. In contrast, in the node-line plane, the RKKY interaction form a beating pattern and oscillates more rapidly with two distinct periods: one is coming from the Fermi energy and the other is from the radius of node-line. More importantly, inside nodal-line SMs bulk, the decay rate of RKKY interaction manifests a typical two-dimensional feature for impurities aligned along the direction perpendicular to nodal-line plane. Furthermore, the magnetic interactions in nodal-line SMs with linear and quadratic dispersions in the nodal-line plane are compared. We also discuss the possible application of the present theory on realistic NLSM ZrSiSe. Our results shed the light for application of magnetically doped node-line SMs in spintronics.
We first present a simple proof that for any bipartite lattice at half filling the RKKY interaction is antiferromagnetic between impurities on opposite (i.e., A and B) sublattices and is ferromagnetic between impurities on the same sublattices. This result is valid on all length scales. We then focus on the honeycomb lattice and examine the theorem in the long distance limit by performing the low energy calculation using Dirac electrons. To find the universal (cutoff free) result we perform the calculation in smooth cutoff schemes, as we show that the calculation based on a sharp cutoff leads …
The cooperative behavior of quantum impurities on 2D materials, such as graphene and bilayer graphene, is characterized by a non-trivial competition between screening (Kondo effect), and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) magnetism. In addition, due to the small density of states at the Fermi level, impurities may not couple to the conduction electrons at all, behaving as free moments. Employing a recently developed {\em{exact}} numerical method to study multi-impurity lattice systems, we obtain non-perturbative results that dramatically depart from expectations based on the conventional RKK…
We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger Liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic inter-impurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (non-helical) Luttinger Liquids.
We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on same layer (intralayer case) or on different layers (interlayer case) in undoped bilayer graphene in the four-bands model, by directly calculating the Green functions in the eigenvalues and eigenvectors representation. Our results show that both intra- and interlayer RKKY interactions between two magnetic impurities located on same (opposite) sublattice are always ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic). Furthermore we find unusual long-distance decay of the RKKY interaction in BLG. The intralyer RKKY interactions between two m…
We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on the surface of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac nodes in the band structure. By taking into account both bulk and surface contributions to the exchange interaction between the localized spins, we demonstrate that the surface contribution in general dominates the bulk one at distances larger than the inverse node separation due to a weaker power-law decay. We find a strong anisotropy of the surface term with respect to the spins being aligned along the node separation axis or perpendicular to it. In the m…
Magnetic impurities embedded in a metal interact via an effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling mediated by the conduction electrons, which is commonly assumed to be long ranged, with an algebraic decay in the inter-impurity distance. However, they can also form a Kondo screened state that is oblivious to the presence of other impurities. The competition between these effects leads to a critical distance above which Kondo effect dominates, translating into a finite range for the RKKY interaction. We study this mechanism on the square and cubic lattices by introducing an exact m…
We theoretically explore the RKKY interaction mediated by spin-3/2 quasiparticles in half-Heusler topological semimetals in quasi-two-dimensional geometries. We find that while the Kohn-Luttinger terms gives rise to generalized Heisenberg coupling of the form ${\cal H}_{\rm RKKY} \propto σ_{1,i} {\cal I}_{ij} σ_{2,j}$ with a symmetric matrix ${\cal I}_{ij}$, addition of small antisymmetric linear spin-orbit coupling term leads to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling with an antisymmetric matrix ${\cal I}'_{ij}$. We demonstrate that besides the oscillatory dependence on the distance, all couplin…
The competition between the indirect exchange interaction (IEC) of magnetic impurities in metals and the Kondo effect gives rise to a rich quantum phase diagram, the Doniach Diagram. In disordered metals, both the Kondo temperature and the IEC are widely distributed due to the scattering of the conduction electrons from the impurity potential. Therefore, it is a question of fundamental importance, how this Doniach diagram is modified by the disorder, and if one can still identify separate phases. Recently, it has been investigated the effect of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) correlations…
Ultrafast manipulations of magnetic phases are eliciting increasing attention from the scientific community, because potentially relevant to the understanding of nonequilibrium phase transitions and to novel technologies. Here, we focus on manipulations applied to magnetic impurities in metallic hosts. By considering small nanoring geometries, we show how currents can induce a dynamical switching between different types of exchange interactions in these systems. Our work thus opens a study window on nonequilibrium Doniach's magnetic phase diagrams, and time-dependent Kondo-vs-RKKY scenarios.
We show that the RKKY interaction in the two-impurity Anderson model comprise two contributions: a ferromagnetic part stemming from the symmetrized hybridization functions and an anti-ferromagnetic part. We demonstrate that this anti-ferromagnetic contribution can also be generated by an effective local tunneling term between the two impurities. This tunneling can be analytically calculated for particle-hole symmetric impurities. Replacing the full hybridization functions by the symmetric part and this tunneling term leads to the identical low-temperature fixed point spectrum in the numerical …
We study RKKY interactions for magnetic impurities on graphene in situations where the electronic spectrum is in the form of Landau levels. Two such situations are considered: non-uniformly strained graphene, and graphene in a real magnetic field. RKKY interactions are enhanced by the lowest Landau level, which is shown to form electron states binding with the spin impurities and add a strong non-perturbative contribution to pairwise impurity spin interactions when their separation $R$ no more than the magnetic length. Beyond this interactions are found to fall off as $1/R^3$ due to perturbati…
We study the RKKY interaction of magnetic impurities in the $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ model which hosts pseudospin-1 fermions with two dispersive and one flat bands. By using the effective low-energy Hamiltonian we calculate the RKKY coupling for impurities placed on the same or different sublattices. We find that there are three types of interaction, which depend on the model parameter defining the relative strength of hoppings between sublattices, two of them can be reduced to graphene case while the third one is new and is due to the presence of a flat zero-energy band. We derive general analytical…

We propose that localized defects in magnetic semiconductors act as deep impurities and can be described by the Anderson model. Within this model, hybridization of d-orbitals and p-orbitals gives rise to a non-RKKY indirect exchange mechanism, when the localized d-electrons are exchanged through both conduction and valence bands. For semiconductors with indirect band gap the non-RKKY part of exchange integral is antiferromagnetic, which suppresses ferromagnetism. In case of direct band gap, this exchange mechanism can, under certain conditions, lead to enhancement of ferromagnetism. The indire…
Recent experimental studies have revealed several unexpected properties of Mn-doped BaFe2As2. These include extension of the stripe-like magnetic (pi,0) phase to high temperatures above a critical Mn concentration only, the presence of diffusive and weakly temperature dependent magnetic (pi,pi) checkerboard scattering, and an apparent absent structural distortion from tetragonal to orthorhombic. Here, we study the effects of magnetic impurities both below and above the Néel transition temperature within a real-space five-band model appropriate to the iron pnictides. We show how these experimen…
Despite their dispersion-less character, flat bands (FBs) are often at the heart of remarkable physical phenomena. Because, FBs may be responsible for unconventional quantum electronic transport, our purpose is to investigate their impact on the RKKY couplings (J(R)). As a good candidate, we choose the The Lieb lattice which consists of one four-fold coordinated atom (A) and two two-fold coordinated atoms (B,C) per unit cell. As in graphene, at the neutrality point, J(R) is found to fall off as 1/R3. The coupling between a pair of impurities on sublattice A are found ferromagnetic and isotropi…
We investigate theoretically the transport properties of two independent artificial Kondo impurities. They are coupled together via a tunable Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction. For strong enough antiferromagnetic RKKY interaction, the impurity density of states increases with the applied in-plane magnetic field. This effect can be used to distinguish between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic RKKY interactions. These results may be relevant to explain some features of recent experiments by Craig et al. (cond-mat/0404213).
We study the tuning mechanisms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two lateral quantum dots in the Kondo regime. At zero magnetic field we observe the expected splitting of the Kondo resonance and measure the RKKY interaction strength J as a function of the asymmetry between the two Kondo temperatures. At finite magnetic fields a chiral coupling between the quantum dots is observed in the Kondo chessboard and we probe the presence of the exchange interaction by analyzing the Kondo temperature with magnetic field.
The (111) surface of noble metals is usually treated as an isolated two dimensional (2D) triangular lattice completely decoupled from the bulk. However, unlike topological insulators, other bulk bands cross the Fermi level. We here introduce an effective tight-binding model that accurately reproduces results from first principles calculations, accounting for both surface and bulk states. We numerically solve the many-body problem of two quantum impurities sitting on the surface by means of the density matrix renormalization group. By performing simulations in a star geometry, we are able to st…
The nontrivial spin texture on the (001) surface of topological crystalline insulator SnTe hosts exotic scientific importance and spintronic applications. Here, we study the effects of weak Floquet optical driving on the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two magnetic impurities on a doped SnTe(001) surface. Due to peculiar spin-orbit hybridization, we find a noncollinear twisted RKKY interaction comprising XYZ-Heisenberg, symmetric in-plane, and asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) terms. We see that contributions from the $z$ ($x$)-component of the XYZ-Heisenberg (DM) …
We study transport through two quantum dots coupled by an RKKY interaction as a function of temperature and magnetic field. By applying the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method we obtain the transmission and the linear conductance. At zero temperature and magnetic field, we observe a quantum phase transition between the Kondo screened state and a local spin singlet as the RKKY interaction is tuned. Above the critical RKKY coupling the Kondo peak is split. However, we find that both finite temperature and magnetic field restore the Kondo resonance. Our results agree well with recent tra…
We consider the contribution of magnetic impurities to the nuclear magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and to the specific heat $C$ of a metal. The impurity contribution to the magnetic susceptibility has a $1/T^2$ behaviour, and the impurity contribution to the specific heat has a $1/T$ behaviour, both in an extended region of temperatures $T$. In the case of a dirty metal the RKKY interaction of nuclear spins and impurity spins is suppressed for low temperatures and the main contribution to $C$ and $χ$ is given by their dipole-dipole interaction.
It is generally believed that superconductivity only weakly affects the indirect exchange between magnetic impurities. If the distance r between impurities is smaller than than the superconducting coherence length (r < ξ), this exchange is thought to be dominated by RKKY interactions, identical to the those in a normal metallic host. This perception is based upon a perturbative treatment of the exchange interaction. Here, we provide a non-perturbative analysis and demonstrate that the presence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states induces a strong 1/r^2 anti-ferromagnetic interaction that can domin…
We theoretically investigate the features of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two magnetic impurities, mediated by the interfacial bound states inside a domain wall (DW). The latter separates the two regions with oppositely signed inversion symmetry broken terms in graphene and Weyl semimetal. The DW is modelled by a smooth quantum well which hosts a number of discrete bound states including a pair of gapless, metallic zero-energy modes with opposite chiralities. We find clear signatures of these interfacial chiral bound states in spin response (RKKY exchange i…
We calculate Curie temperatures and study the stability of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic materials, taking as a model for the exchange between magnetic impurities a damped Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and a shor t range term representing the effects of superexchange. To properly include effects of spin and thermal fluctuations as well as geometric disorder, we solve the effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian by means of a recently developed semi-analytical approach. This approach, ``self-consistent local Random Phase Approximation (SC-L RPA)'', is explained. We show that pre…
Using the multiband model we analyze the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the magnetic impurities in layered ferropnictide superconductors. In the normal state the interaction is spin isotropic and is dominated by the nesting features of the electron and hole bands separated by the antiferromagnetic momentum, ${\bf Q}_{AF}$. In the AF state the RKKY interaction maps into an effective anisotropic XXZ-type Heisenberg exchange model. The anisotropy originates from the breaking of the spin-rotational symmetry induced by the AF order and its strength depends on the size of t…
We study systems of multiple interacting quantum impurities deposited on a metallic surface in a 3D host. For the real-space two-impurity problem, using numerical renormalization group calculations, a rich range of behavior is shown to arise due to the interplay between Kondo physics and effective RKKY interactions - provided the impurity separation is small. Such calculations allow identification of the minimum impurity separation required for a description in terms of independent impurities, and thereby the onset of the 'dilute impurity limit' in many-impurity systems. A 'dilute cluster' lim…
We propose a model of a strongly-interacting two-impurity Kondo system based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, also known as holography. In a Landau Fermi Liquid, the single-impurity Kondo effect is the screening of an impurity spin at low temperature $T$. The two-impurity Kondo model then describes the competition between the Kondo interaction and the Heisenberg interaction between two impurity spins, also called the RKKY interaction. For spin-$1/2$ impurities, that competition leads to a quantum phase transition from a Kondo-screened phase to a phase in which the two impurity spins screen one a…
We present the effective low-energy theory for interacting 1D quantum wires subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Under a one-loop renormalization group scheme including all allowed interaction processes for not too weak Rashba coupling, we show that electron-electron backscattering is an irrelevant perturbation. Therefore no gap arises and electronic transport is described by a modified Luttinger liquid theory. As an application of the theory, we discuss the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities. Interactions are shown to induce a slower power-law decay of the RKKY range function …
In order to study the interplay between Kondo and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions between two Kondo impurities coupled to different sites of a half-filled open Hubbard chain. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we re-examine the exponents for the power-law decay of the correlation function between the two impurity spins as a function of the antiferromagnetic coupling J, the Hubbard interaction U, and the distance R between the impurities. The exponents for finite systems obtained in this work deviate from pre…
We analyze the two Anderson impurity problem, in the strong Coulomb repulsion limit, by means of variational wave functions whose equations we solve analytically. We found two pairs of Doublet states, one odd and one even with respect to the midplane between the impurities. These Doublets make a significatively strong use of the hybridization terms of the Hamiltonian, and have a much larger Kondo-like correlation energy than a single impurity (the Kondo energy). Furthermore, these Doublets combine to form a Super-Singlet. This Super-Singlet makes use of the remaining hybridization probability …
We study transport in a Weyl semimetal with donor and acceptor impurities. At sufficiently high temperatures transport is dominated by electron-electron interactions, while the low-temperature resistivity comes from the scattering of quasiparticles on screened impurities. Using the diagrammatic technique, we calculate the conductivity $σ(T,ω,n_A,n_D)$ in the impurities-dominated regime as a function of temperature $T$, frequency $ω$, and the concentrations $n_A$ and $n_D$ of donors and acceptors and discuss the crossover behaviour between the regimes of low and high temperatures and impurity c…
Mobile impurities in cold atomic gases constitute a new platform for investigating polaron physics. Here we show that when impurity atoms interact with a two-dimensional Fermi gas with quadratic band touching the polaron picture may either hold or break down depending on the particle-hole asymmetry of the band structure. If the hole band has a smaller effective mass than the particle band, the quasiparticle is stable and its diffusion coefficient varies with temperature as $D(T) \propto \ln^2 T$. If the hole band has larger mass, the quasiparticle weight vanishes at low energies due to an emer…
The interplay between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and the Kondo effect is expected to provide the driving force for the emergence of many phenomena in strongly correlated electron materials. Two magnetic impurities in a metal are the smallest possible system containing all these ingredients and define a bottom up approach towards a long term understanding of concentrated / dense systems. Here we report on the experimental and theoretical investigation of iron dimers buried below a Cu(100) surface by means of low temperature scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) combin…
Recent experiments on Weyl semimetals reveal that charged impurities may play an important role. We use a screened Coulomb disorder to model the charged impurities, and study the magneto-transport in a two-node Weyl semimetal. It is found that when the external magnetic field is applied parallel to the electric field, the calculated longitudinal magnetoconductivity shows positive in the magnetic field, which is just the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR) observed in experiments. When the two fields are perpendicular to each other, the transverse magnetoconductivities are measured. …
A form of an indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-like coupling between magnetic on-site impurities in armchair graphene nanoribbons is studied theoretically. The calculations are based on a tight-binding model for a finite nanoribbon system with periodic boundary conditions. A pronounced Friedel-oscillation-like dependence of the coupling magnitude on the impurity position within the nanoribbon resulting from quantum size effects is found and investigated. In particular, the distance dependence of coupling is analysed. For semiconducting nanoribbons, this dependence is exponential-li…
We study collective behavior of magnetic adatoms randomly distributed on the surface of a topological insulator. As a consequence of the spin-momentum locking on the surface, the RKKY-type interactions of two adatom spins depend on the direction of the vector connecting them, thus interactions of an ensemble of adatoms are frustrated. We show that at low temperatures the frustrated RKKY interactions give rise to two phases: an ordered ferromagnetic phase with spins pointing perpendicular to the surface, and a disordered spin-glass-like phase. The two phases are separated by a quantum phase tra…
We calculate the indirect charge carrier mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities for two selected graphene nanoflakes containing four hexagonal rings in their structure, differing by their geometry. We describe the electronic structure of either charge-neutral or doped nanoflakes using the tight-binding approximation with the Hubbard term, which is treated within the molecular-field approximation. We find pronounced differences in the RKKY coupling energies, dependent on the placement of the pair of magnetic moments in the nanostructure and on the …
Motivated by the research interests on realizing flat bands and magnetization plateaus in kagome lattices, we study the electronic properties and magnetic interactions in both zero- and one-dimensional triangular Kagome lattice (1D-TKL) models, by using the real-space Greens function approach in tight-binding model. We firstly study the electronic properties of both 0D and 1D-TKL in the presence of staggered sublattice potential, then, by analyzing the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction in these lattice structures, the magnetic ground states of both 0D and 1D-TKL in the presence…
We have carried out a generalized Schrieffer-Wolff transformation of an Anderson two-impurity Hamiltonian to study the low-energy spin interactions of the system. The second-order expansion yields the standard Kondo Hamiltonian for two impurities with additional scattering terms. At fouth-order, we get the well-known RKKY interaction. In addition, we also find an antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling and a correlated Kondo coupling between the two impurities.
We study the effect of coupling magnetic impurities to the honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Kitaev model in its spin liquid phase. We show that a spin-S impurity coupled to the Kitaev model is associated with an unusual Kondo effect with an intermediate coupling unstable fixed point K_c J/S separating topologically distinct sectors of the Kitaev model. We also show that the massless spinons in the spin liquid mediate an interaction of the form S_{iα}^{2}S_{jβ}^{2}/R_{ij}^{3} between distant impurities unlike the usual dipolar RKKY interaction S_{iα}S_{jα}/R_{ij}^{3} noted in various 2D impurity prob…
Two spins located at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator may interact with each other via indirect spin-exchange interaction mediated by the helical edge states, namely the RKKY interaction, which can be measured by the magnetic correlation between the two spins. By means of the newly developed natural orbitals renormalization group (NORG) method, we investigated the magnetic correlation between two Kondo impurities interacting with the helical edge states, based on the Kane-Mele model defined in a finite zigzag graphene nanoribbon with spin-orbital coupling (SOC). We find that the SOC e…
We propose that real-space properties of the two-impurity Kondo model can be obtained from an effective spin model where two single-impurity Kondo spin chains are joined via an RKKY interaction between the two impurity spins. We then use a DMRG approach, valid in all ranges of parameters, to study its features using two complementary quantum-entanglement measures, the negativity and the von Neumann entropy. This non-perturbative approach enables us to uncover the precise dependence of the spatial extent $ξ_K$ of the Kondo screening cloud with the Kondo and RKKY couplings. Our results reveal an…
Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional topological materials where two bands touch at an even number of points in the bulk Brillouin zone. These semimetals exhibit topologically protected surface Fermi arcs, which pairwise connect the projected bulk band touchings in the surface Brillouin zone. Here, we analyze the quasiparticle interference patterns of the Weyl phase when time-reversal symmetry is explicitly broken. We use a multi-band $d$-electron Hubbard Hamiltonian on a pyrochlore lattice, relevant for the pyrochlore iridate R$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (where R is a rare earth). Using exact di…
The magnetic ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with a regular depletion of the correlated sites are analyzed within different theoretical approaches. We consider the model on the one-dimensional chain and on the two-dimensional square lattice with hopping between nearest neighbors. At half-filling and with correlated impurities present at every second site, the depleted Anderson lattice is the most simple system where the indirect magnetic coupling mediated by the conduction electrons is ferromagnetic. We discuss the underlying electronic structure and the possible mechani…
We investigate the finite-temperature properties of an Anderson lattice with regularly depleted impurities. The physics of this model is ruled by two different magnetic exchange mechanisms: conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction at weak hybridization strength V and a novel inverse indirect magnetic exchange (IIME) at strong V, both favoring a ferromagnetic ground state. The stability of ferromagnetic order against thermal fluctuations is systematically studied by static mean-field theory for an effective low-energy spin-only model emerging perturbatively in the strong-co…
We study the electrical conductivity in a nodal-line semimetal with charged impurities. The screening of the Coulomb potential in this system is qualitatively different from what is found in conventional metals or semiconductors, with the screened potential $ϕ$ decaying as $ϕ\propto 1/r^2$ over a wide interval of distances $r$. This unusual screening gives rise to a rich variety of conduction regimes as a function of temperature, doping level and impurity concentration. In particular, nodal-line semimetals exhibit a diverging mobility $\propto 1/|μ|$ in the limit of vanishing chemical potentia…
The indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between on-site magnetic impurities is studied for two kinds of graphene nanoflakes consisting of approximately 100 carbon atoms, posessing either zigzag or armchair edge. The tight-binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term is used in non-perturbative calculations of coupling between the impurities placed at the edge of the structure. In general, for zigzag-edged nanoflakes a pronounced coupling robust against charge doping is found, while for armchair-edged structures the interaction is weaker and much more sensitive to charge doping. Als…
