A polymer in a turbulent flow undergoes the coil-stretch transition when the Weissenberg number, i.e. the product of the Lyapunov exponent of the flow and the relaxation time of the polymer, surpasses a critical value. The effect of internal friction on the transition is studied by means of Brownian dynamics simulations of the elastic dumbbell model in a homogeneous and isotropic, incompressible, turbulent flow and analytical calculations for a stochastic velocity gradient. The results are explained by adapting the large deviations theory of Balkovsky et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2000, 84, 4765] to an elastic dumbbell with internal viscosity. In turbulent flows, a distinctive feature of the probability distribution of polymer extensions is its power-law behaviour for extensions greater than the equilibrium length and smaller than the contour length. It is shown that although internal friction does not modify the critical Weissenberg number for the coil-stretch transition, it makes the slope of the probability distribution steeper, thus rendering the transition sharper. Internal friction therefore provides a possible explanation for the steepness of the distribution of polymer extensions observed in experiments at large Weissenberg numbers.
The conformation of a long linear polymer dissolved in fluid and exposed to an extensional flow is well-known to exhibit a "coil-stretch" transition, which for sufficiently long chains can lead to bistability. The present work reports computations indicating that an analogous "compact-stretched" transition arises in the dynamics of a thin elastic sheet. Sheets of nominally circular, square or rectangular shape are simulated in planar and biaxial flows using a finite element method for the sheet conformations and a regularized Stokeslet method for the fluid flow. If a neo-Hookean constitutive m…
We analyze the conformational dynamics and statistical properties of an active polymer model. The polymer is described as a freely-jointed bead-rod chain subject to stochastic active force dipoles that act on the suspending solvent where they drive long-ranged fluid flows. Using Langevin simulations of isolated chains in unconfined domains, we show how the coupling of active flows with polymer conformations leads to emergent dynamics. Systems with contractile dipoles behave similarly to passive Brownian chains with enhanced fluctuations due to dipolar flows. In systems with extensile dipoles, …
The dynamics of elongated inertial particles in an extensional flow is studied numerically by performing simulations of freely jointed bead-rod chains. The coil-stretch transition and the tumbling instability are characterized as a function of three parameters: The Peclet number, the Stokes number and the chain length. Numerical results show that in the limit of infinite chain length, particles are trapped in a coiled or stretched state. The coil-stretch transition is also shown to depend non-linearly on the Stokes and Peclet number. Results also reveal that tumbling occurs close to the coil-s…
We analyze the statistics of work generated by a gradient flow to stretch a nonlinear polymer. We obtain the Large Deviation Function (LDF) of the work in the full range of appropriate parameters by combining analytical and numerical tools. The LDF shows two distinct asymptotes: "near tails" are linear in work and dominated by coiled polymer configurations, while "far tails" are quadratic in work and correspond to preferentially fully stretched polymers. We find the extreme value statistics of work for several singular elastic potentials, as well as the mean and the dispersion of work near the…
The interaction of polymers with small-scale velocity gradients can trigger a coil-stretch transition in the polymers. We analyze this transition within a direct numerical simulation of shear turbulence with an Oldroyd-B model for the polymer. In the coiled state the lengths of polymers are distributed algebraically with an exponent alpha=2 gamma-1/De, where gamma is a characteristic stretching rate of the flow and De the Deborah number. In the stretched state we demonstrate that the length distribution of the polymers is limited by the feedback to the flow.

The statistics of polymers advected by a turbulent flow are investigated. To limit the polymer lengths above to coil-stretch transition, a FENE-P type relaxation law is used. The turbulence is modeled by a random strain, delta-correlated in time and with Gaussian statistics. The distribution of polymer lengths for both the coiled and stretched states are derived, from which are obtained analytical expressions for the moments of the distribution. The polymer stress on the fluid decreases linearly with the inverse of the Deborah number. The degradation (breaking) of the polymers is also discusse…
Polymers in a turbulent flow are stretched out by the fluctuating velocity gradient; the stationary probability distribution function (p.d.f.) of extensions $R$ has a power-law tail with an exponent that increases with the Weissenberg number $Wi$, a nondimensional measure of polymer elasticity. This study addresses the following questions: (i) What is the role of the non-Gaussian statistics of the turbulent velocity gradient on polymer stretching? (ii) How does the p.d.f. of $R$ evolve to its asymptotic stationary form? Our analysis is based on simulations of the dynamics of finitely-extensibl…
We study the behavior of threads and polymers in a turbulent flow. These objects have finite spatial extension, so the flow along them differs slightly. The corresponding drag forces produce a finite average stretching and the thread is stretched most of the time. Nevertheless, the probability of shrinking fluctuations is significant and is known to decay only as a power-law. We show that the exponent of the power law is a universal number independent of the statistics of the flow. For polymers the coil-stretch transition exists: the flow must have a sufficiently large Lyapunov exponent to ove…
We show and explain how a long bead-spring chain, immersed in a homogeneous, isotropic turbulent flow, preferentially samples vortical flow structures. We begin with an elastic, extensible chain which is stretched out by the flow, up to inertial-range scales. This filamentary object, which is known to preferentially sample the circular coherent vortices of two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, is shown here to also preferentially sample the intense, tubular, vortex filaments of 3D turbulence. In the 2D case, the chain collapses into a tracer inside vortices. In 3D, on the contrary, the chain is ext…
Boundary-layer transition is accompanied by a significant increase in skin friction whose origin is rigorously explained using the stochastic Lagrangian formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. This formulation permits the exact analysis of vorticity dynamics in individual realizations of a viscous incompressible fluid flow. The Lagrangian reconstruction formula for vorticity is here extended for the first time to Neumann boundary conditions (Lighthill source). We can thus express the wall vorticity, and therefore the wall stress, as the expectation of a stochastic Cauchy invariant in backw…
The current study is a pioneering work in presenting the boundary layer equations for the two-dimensional flow and heat transfer of the Cross fluid over a linearly stretching sheet. The system of partial differential equations is turned down into highly non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformations. The stretching sheet solutions are presented via. a numerical technique namely the shooting method and graphs are constructed for the shear-thinning as well as shear-thickening regime. The impact of the emerging parameters namely the power-law index , th…
Of concern in this paper is an investigation of heat and mass transfer over a stretching sheet under the influence of an applied uniform magnetic field and the effects of Hall current are taken into account. The non-linear boundary layer equations together with the boundary conditions are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using the similarity transformation. The system of non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved by developing a suitable numerical techniques such as finite difference scheme and Newton's method of linearization. The numerical resul…
An analysis is carried out to examine the effects of the steady flow of an electrically conducting viscous incompressible nanofluid in the existence of a uniform transverse magnetic field with chemical reaction over a stretching sheet considering suction or injection. The present model is demonstrated experimentally to reveal the effects of Thermophoresis and Brownian motion. Similarity solutions are investigated for the governing equations and solved numerically by using a shooting technique with fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration scheme. The impact of associated parameters on velocity prof…
The interplay between concentration, flow, hydrodynamic interactions (HI), and topological interactions governing semidilute polymer dynamics in strong flows are challenging to characterize. Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations are particularly valuable as a way to direct visualize how molecular interactions arise in these systems; however, BD simulations are often computationally limited by the need to calculate the correlated Brownian noise via decomposition of the diffusion tensor. Previously we have introduced an iterative conformational averaging (CA) method for BD simulations which bypasse…
Direct simulations of two-dimensional channel flow of a viscoelastic fluid have revealed the existence of a family of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) attractors that is nonlinearly self-sustained by viscoelasticity [Shekar et al., J.Fluid Mech. 893, A3 (2020)]. Here, we describe the evolution of this branch in parameter space and its connections to the Newtonian TS attractor and to elastoinertial turbulence (EIT). At Reynolds number $Re=3000$, there is a solution branch with TS-wave structure but which is not connected to the Newtonian solution branch. At fixed Weissenberg number, $Wi$ and increasin…
We present direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow with passive Lagrangian polymers. To understand the polymer behavior we investigate the behavior of infinitesimal line elements and calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of finite-time Lyapunov exponents and from them the corresponding Cramer's function for the channel flow. We study the statistics of polymer elongation for both the Oldroyd-B model (for Weissenberg number $\Wi <1$) and the FENE model. We use the location of the minima of the Cramer's function to define the Weissenberg number precisely such that w…
We use Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations and single molecule experiments to investigate the influence of topological constraints and hydrodynamic interactions on the dynamics and rheology of solutions of ring-linear polymer blends at the overlap concentration. We find agreement between simulation and experiment in that rings in solution blends exhibit large conformational fluctuations, including extension overshoots in the startup of flow and tumbling and tank-treading at steady state. Ring polymer fluctuations increase with blend fraction of linear polymers and are peaked at a ring Weissenbe…
Transition to turbulence in straight pipes occurs in spite of the linear stability of the laminar Hagen--Poiseuille flow if the amplitude of flow perturbations as well as the Reynolds number exceed a minimum threshold (subcritical transition). As the pipe curvature increases centrifugal effects become important, modifying the basic flow as well as the most unstable linear modes. If the curvature (tube-to-coiling diameter $d/D$) is sufficiently large a Hopf bifurcation (supercritical instability) is encountered before turbulence can be excited (subcritical instability). We trace the instability…
Creeping flow of polymeric fluid without inertia exhibits elastic instabilities and elastic turbulence accompanied by drag enhancement due to elastic stress produced by flow-stretched polymers. However, in inertia-dominated flow at high $\mbox{Re}$ and low fluid elasticity $El$, a reduction in turbulent frictional drag is caused by an intricate competition between inertial and elastic stresses. Here, we explore the effect of inertia on the stability of viscoelastic flow in a broad range of control parameters $El$ and $(\mbox{Re}, \mbox{Wi})$. We present the stability diagram of observed flow r…
The interaction of polymers with turbulent shear flows is examined. We focus on the structure of the elastic stress tensor, which is proportional to the polymer conformation tensor. We examine this object in turbulent flows of increasing complexity. First is isotropic turbulence, then anisotropic (but homogenous) shear turbulence and finally wall bounded turbulence. The main result of this paper is that for all these flows the polymer stress tensor attains a universal structure in the limit of large Deborah number $\De\gg 1$. We present analytic results for the suppression of the coil-stretch …
