Of concern in this paper is an investigation of heat and mass transfer over a stretching sheet under the influence of an applied uniform magnetic field and the effects of Hall current are taken into account. The non-linear boundary layer equations together with the boundary conditions are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using the similarity transformation. The system of non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved by developing a suitable numerical techniques such as finite difference scheme and Newton's method of linearization. The numerical results concerned with the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles as well as the skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt number Nu and the local sherhood number Sh for various values of the nondimensional parameters presented graphically.
The solution for the MHD flow, due to a linearly stretching sheet, has a simple form for the velocity field, with a companion simple form for the induced magnetic field. The associated thermal problem, including viscous dissipation and Joule heating, involves three temperature constituents, the solutions for two of which are obtained in terms of Kummer's function. The solution for the third temperature constituent is obtained in a convergent series form.
The equations governing the magnetohydrodynamic stagnation point flow toward a non-conducting, thermally insulated, nonporous, linearly stretching sheet are cast in a self similar form. Consistent boundary conditions on the velocity, magnetic field and temperature are invoked. The flow problem involves three parameters- the magnetic Prandtl number, the magnetic interaction number, and the ratio of the stretching rate to the strength of the stagnation point flow. The energy equation includes viscous dissipation and Joule heating, and introduces the Prandtl number as a fourth parameter. Numerica…
The full MHD problem of the flow and heat transfer due to a linearly stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is put in a self-similar form. Traditionally ignored physical processes such as induced magnetic field, viscous dissipation, Joule heating, and work shear are included and their importance is established. Cases of prescribed surface temperature, prescribed heat flux, surface feed (injection or suction), velocity slip, and thermal slip are also considered. The problem is shown to admit self similarity. Sample numerical solutions are obtained for chosen combination…
An analysis has been investigated for the effects of thermal radiation and Hall current on magnetohydrodynamic free-convective flow and mass transfer over a stretching sheet with variable viscosity in the presence of heat generation/absorption. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as an inverse linear function of temperature. The boundary-layer equations governing the flow problem under consideration have been reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by employing a similarity transformation. Using the finite difference scheme, numerical solutions to the transform ord…
The full MHD equations, governing the flow due to the axisymmetric stretching of a sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, can be cast in a self similar form. This allows evaluation of the induced magnetic field and its effect on the flow and heat transfer. The problem involves three parameters- the magnetic Prandtl number, the magnetic interaction number, and the Prandtl number. Numerical solutions are obtained for the velocity field, the magnetic field, and the temperature, at different values of the magnetic Prandtl number and the magnetic interaction number. The contributions…

The governing non-linear partial differential equations are converted into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations which are solved by hybrid technique consisting of finite element method with symbolic computation. The effect of Viscous dissipation, magnetic influence parameter, permeability parameter, Brownian motion, Eckert number, Thermophoresis parameter, Prandtl number parameter, Dufour Lewis…
The present investigation discusses the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a steady three dimensional Sisko fluid. The flow is induced due to bidirectional stretching sheet. The influence of power-law index and stretching ratio on flow and heat transfer is studied thoroughly. Governing partial differential equations are reduced to coupled ordinary differential equations by suitable similarity variable. The resulting equations are then solved numerically by shooting method using adaptive Runge Kutta algorithm in combination with Broyden's method in the domain . The numerical results for …
We compute the angular dynamics of a neutrally buoyant nearly spherical particle immersed in an unsteady fluid. We assume that the particle is small, that its translational slip velocity is negligible, and that unsteady and convective inertia are small perturbations. We derive an approximation for the torque on the particle that determines the first inertial corrections to Jeffery's equation. These corrections arise as a consequence of local vortex stretching, and can be substantial in turbulence where local vortex stretching is strong and closely linked to the irreversibility of turbulence.
We study effects of both magnetic field and radiation on unsteady free convective magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow under the influence of heat and mass transfer. An implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method is used to analyze the results. The governing boundary layer equations along with the initial and boundary conditions are casted into a dimensionless form which results in a more precise solution. We determine the change in velocity under the influence of radiation and magnetic field with temperature and concentration taken into account. A code is constructed (FORTRAN 6.5) to…
We investigate the utility of the convex hull of many Lagrangian tracers to analyze transport properties of turbulent flows with different anisotropy. In direct numerical simulations of statistically homogeneous and stationary Navier-Stokes turbulence, neutral fluid Boussinesq convection, and MHD Boussinesq convection a comparison with Lagrangian pair dispersion shows that convex hull statistics capture the asymptotic dispersive behavior of a large group of passive tracer particles. Moreover, convex hull analysis provides additional information on the sub-ensemble of tracers that on average di…
Stars of sufficiently low mass are convective throughout their interiors, and so do not possess an internal boundary layer akin to the solar tachocline. Because that interface figures so prominently in many theories of the solar magnetic dynamo, a widespread expectation had been that fully convective stars would exhibit surface magnetic behavior very different from that realized in more massive stars. Here I describe how recent observations and theoretical models of dynamo action in low-mass stars are partly confirming, and partly confounding, this basic expectation. In particular, I present t…
In this paper, we have studied the convectively coupled equatorially trapped waves in rotating stars, with and without magnetic field. The equatorial trapped HD and MHD Poincaré, Rossby, mixed Rossby-Poincaré, and Kelvin waves were identified. The effects of stratification and non-traditional Coriolis force terms have been investigated. When the flow is strongly stratified, the wave frequencies of the convectively coupled model are almost the same as those of shallow water model. However, when the flow is weakly stratified, the wave frequencies are constrained by the buoyancy frequency. The no…
Surface observations indicate that the speed of the solar meridional circulation in the photosphere varies in anti-phase with the solar cycle. The current explanation for the source of this variation is that inflows into active regions alter the global surface pattern of the meridional circulation. When these localized inflows are integrated over a full hemisphere, they contribute to the slow down of the axisymmetric poleward horizontal component. The behavior of this large scale flow deep inside the convection zone remains largely unknown. Present helioseismic techniques are not sensitive eno…
Ideal systems of equations such as Euler and MHD may develop singular structures like shocks, vortex/current sheets. Among these, vortical singularities arise due to vortex stretching which can lead to unbounded growth of enstrophy. Viscosity and resistivity provide dissipative regularizations of these singularities. In analogy with the dispersive KdV regularization of the 1D inviscid Burgers' equation, we propose a local conservative regularization of ideal 3D compressible flows, MHD and 2-fluid plasmas (with potential applications to high vorticity flows with low dissipation). The regulariza…
Fully compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are a fundamental tool for investigating the role of dynamo amplification in the generation of magnetic fields in deep convective layers of stars. The flows that arise in such environments are characterized by low (sonic) Mach numbers (M_son < 0.01 ). In these regimes, conventional MHD codes typically show excessive dissipation and tend to be inefficient as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) constraint on the time step becomes too strict. In this work we present a new method for efficiently simulating MHD flows at low Mach numbers in a sp…
