We study the production of Higgs bosons at high transverse momenta via vector-boson fusion (VBF) in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We find that contributions from four independent operator combinations dominate in this limit. These are the same `high energy primaries' that control high energy diboson processes, including Higgs-strahlung. We perform detailed collider simulations for the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson as well as the three final states arising from the ditau channel. Using the quadratic growth of the SMEFT contributions relative to the Standard Model (SM) contribution, we project very stringent bounds on these operators that far surpass the corresponding bounds from the LEP experiment.
We consider Higgs boson production through gluon fusion at large transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We present the analytic expressions of the relevant one-loop QCD amplitudes including the effects of the complete set of dimension-six operators. The latter correspond to modifications of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, to an effective point-like Higgs coupling to gluons and to the chromomagnetic operator of the top quark. The quantitative impact of the chromomagnetic operator is also studied. Our results confirm previous findings that the effect of the chromomagnetic operator at h…
We discuss and illustrate the properties of several parton-shower algorithms available in Pythia and Vincia, in the context of Higgs production via vector boson fusion (VBF). In particular, the distinctive colour topology of VBF processes allows to define observables sensitive to the coherent radiation pattern of additional jets. We study a set of such observables, using the Vincia sector-antenna shower as our main reference, and contrast it to Pythia's transverse-momentum-ordered DGLAP shower as well as Pythia's dipole-improved shower. We then investigate the robustness of these predictions a…
We investigate the modification of the Higgs signals from vector boson fusion at the LHC arising from higher-dimensional effective operators involving quarks, electroweak gauge bosons and the 125-GeV scalar discovered in 2012. Taking a few of the admissible dimension-6 operators as illustration, we work within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) and identify kinematic variables that can reflect the presence of such effective operators. The useful variables turn out to be the geometric mean of the transverse momenta of the two forward jets produced in VBF and the …

We demonstrate that measurements of the neutral-current Drell-Yan transverse momentum distribution binned in invariant mass are sensitive to unexplored dimension-8 parameters of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). These distributions are sensitive to four-fermion operators with additional QCD field strength tensors. The determination of the Wilson coefficients of these operators provides a useful diagnostic tool that distinguishes possible ultraviolet completions of the SMEFT. We study how well these effects can be probed by current LHC data, and explore the sensitivity of the f…
This talk expands on recently published results for the factorising next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion (VBF) channel. The calculation is fully differential in the kinematics of the Higgs boson and the final state jets and is implemented in the NNLOJET framework for computing higher-order QCD corrections. We find the NNLO corrections to be limited in magnitude to about $\pm 5$\% with a weak kinematical dependence in the transverse momenta and rapidity separation of the two tagging jets.
The study of Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum is one of the new frontiers for the LHC Higgs physics programme. This paper considers boosted Higgs production in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We focus on the gluon fusion and $t{\bar t}H$ production processes and study the effects of three dimension-6 operators: the top Yukawa operator, the gluon-Higgs effective coupling and the chromomagnetic dipole operator of the top quark. We perform a detailed study of the sensitivity of current and future LHC data to the corresponding Wilson coefficients, consistently…

Measurements of the $W^\pm$ mass ($m_W$) provide an important consistency check of the Standard Model (SM) and constrain the possibility of physics beyond the SM. Precision measurements of $m_W$ at hadron colliders are inferred from kinematic distributions of transverse variables. We examine how this inference is modified when considering the presence of physics beyond the SM expressed in terms of local contact operators. We show that Tevatron measurements of $m_W$ using transverse variables are transparent and applicable as consistent constraints in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (…
The data taken in Run II at the LHC have started to probe Higgs boson production at high transverse momentum. Future data will provide a large sample of events with boosted Higgs boson topologies, allowing for a detailed understanding of electroweak Higgs boson plus two-jet production, and in particular the vector-boson fusion mode (VBF). We perform a detailed comparison of precision calculations for Higgs boson production in this channel, with particular emphasis on large Higgs boson transverse momenta, and on the jet radius dependence of the cross section. We study fixed-order predictions at…
For certain classes of Beyond the Standard Model theories, including composite Higgs models, the coupling of the Higgs to gauge bosons can be different from the Standard Model one. In this case, the multi-boson production via vector boson fusion (VBF) can be hugely enhanced in comparison to the SM production one due to the lack of cancellation in longitudinal vector boson scattering. Among these processes, triple Higgs boson production in VBF plays a special role - its enhancement is especially spectacular due to the absence of background from transversely polarised vector bosons in the final …
The effective Lagrangian formalism provides a way to study the new physics effects at the electroweak scale. We study the Higgs pair production via the vector-boson fusion (VBF) at the Large Hadron Collider within the framework of the effective field theory. The effects from the dimension-six operators involved in the VBF Higgs pair production, particularly $\mathcal{O}_{Φ,2}$ and $\mathcal{O}_{Φ,3}$ which are relevant to the triple Higgs self-coupling, on the integrated cross section and various kinematic distributions are investigated. We find that the distributions of Higgs pair invariant m…

The production of a Higgs boson in association with at least two jets receives contributions both from the fusion of weak vector bosons (VBF) and from QCD processes, especially gluon fusion (GF). The former process is important for measuring the coupling of the Higgs boson to weak bosons, whereas the latter process plays an important role in determining any $CP$-admixtures in the Higgs sector. In this paper we go beyond the current state-of-the-art for fixed order calculations of the GF process (i.e. one loop $H+2j$ including full quark mass effects) by including the all-order effects in leadi…
Several important processes and analyses at the LHC are sensitive to higher-order perturbative corrections beyond what can currently be calculated at fixed order. The formalism of High Energy Jets (HEJ) calculates the corrections systematically enhanced for a large ratio of the centre-of-mass energy to the transverse momentum of the observed jets. These effects are relevant in the analysis of e.g. Higgs-boson production in association with dijets within the cuts devised to enhance the contribution from Vector Boson Fusion (VBF). HEJ obtains an all-order approximation, based on logarithmic corr…
We calculate the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections to inclusive vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs production at proton colliders, in the limit in which there is no colour exchange between the hadronic systems associated with the two colliding protons. We also provide differential cross sections for the Higgs transverse momentum and rapidity distributions. We find that the corrections are at the 1-2 permille level, well within the scale-uncertainty of the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) calculation. The associated scale-uncertainty of the N$^3$LO calculation is …
We calculate the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) QCD corrections to vector-boson fusion (VBF) Higgs pair production in the limit in which there is no partonic exchange between the two protons. We show that the inclusive cross section receives negligible corrections at this order, while the scale variation uncertainties are reduced by a factor four. We present differential distributions for the transverse momentum and rapidity of the final state Higgs bosons, and show that there is almost no kinematic dependence to the third order corrections. Finally we study the impact of devi…
After the Higgs boson discovery, LHC can be used as a precision machine to explore its properties. Indeed, in case new resonances will not be found, the only access to New Physics would be via measuring small deviations from the SM predictions. A consistent approach is provided by a bottom-up Effective Field Theory, with dimension six operators built of Standard Model fields (SMEFT). We discuss how this approach works in case of the transverse momentum spectrum of the Higgs particle. In our calculation we augmented the Standard Model with three additional operators describing modifications of …
The first computation of Higgs production in association with three jets at NLO in QCD has recently been performed using the effective theory, where the top quark is treated as an infinitely heavy particle and integrated out. This approach is restricted to the regions in phase space where the typical scales are not larger than the top quark mass. Here we investigate this statement at a quantitative level by calculating the leading-order contributions to the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with up to three jets taking full top-quark and bottom-quark mass dependence int…
We propose differential observables for $pp \to Z(\ell^+\ell^-)h(b\bar{b})$ that can be used to completely determine the tensor structure of the $hZZ^*/hZ\bar{f}f$ couplings relevant to this process in the dimension-6 SMEFT. In particular, we propose a strategy to probe the anomalous $h Z_{μν}Z^{μν}$ and $h Z_{μν}\tilde{Z}^{μν}$ vertices at the percent level. We show that this can be achieved by resurrecting the interference term between the transverse $Zh$ amplitude, which receives contributions from the above couplings, and the dominant SM longitudinal amplitude. These contributions are hard…
Effective field theories (EFT) are commonly used to parameterize effects of BSM physics in vector boson scattering (VBS). For Wilson coefficients which are large enough to produce presently observable effects, the validity range of the EFT represents only a fraction of the energy range covered by the LHC, however. In order to shed light on possible extrapolations into the high energy region, a class of UV-complete toy models, with extra SU(2) multiplets of scalars or of fermions with vector-like weak couplings, is considered. By calculating the Wilson coefficients up to energy-dimension eight,…
