We report on the observation of the acoustic spin Hall effect that facilitates lattice motion induced spin current via spin orbit interaction (SOI). Under excitation of surface acoustic wave (SAW), we find a spin current flows orthogonal to the propagation direction of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) in non-magnetic metals. The acoustic spin Hall effect manifests itself in a field-dependent acoustic voltage in non-magnetic metal (NM)/ferromagnetic metal (FM) bilayers. The acoustic voltage takes a maximum when the NM layer thickness is close to its spin diffusion length, vanishes for NM layers with weak SOI and increases linearly with the SAW frequency. To account for these results, we find the spin current must scale with the SOI and the time derivative of the lattice displacement. Such form of spin current can be derived from a Berry electric field associated with time varying Berry curvature and/or an unconventional spin-lattice interaction mediated by SOI. These results, which imply the strong coupling of electron spins with rotating lattices via the SOI, show the potential of lattice dynamics to supply spin current in strong spin orbit metals.
The electromotive forces induced by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are investigated in ferromagnetic thin films. CoFeB thin films deposited on LiNbO$_3$ substrates are patterned into Hall-bars to study the acoustoelectric transport properties of the device. The longitudinal and transverse dc voltages that develop in the Hall bars, which are parallel and orthogonal to the flow of the SAW, respectively, are measured under application of an in-plane magnetic field. The longitudinal voltage scales linearly with the SAW power and reverses its polarity upon changing the direction to which the SAW pro…
Any departure from graphene's flatness leads to the emergence of artificial gauge fields that act on the motion of the Dirac fermions through an associated pseudomagnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the tunability of strong gauge fields in non-local experiments using a large planar graphene sheet that conforms to the deformation of a piezoelectric layer by a surface acoustic wave. The acoustic wave induces a longitudinal and a giant synthetic Hall voltage in the absence of external magnetic fields. The superposition of a synthetic Hall potential and a conventional Hall voltage can annihilate t…
We consider a graphene sheet with a zigzag edge subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and investigate the propagation of in-plane acoustic edge waves under the influence of magnetically induced electronic edge states. In particular is is shown that propagation is significantly blocked for certain frequencies defined by the resonant absorption due to electronic-acoustic interaction. We suggest that strong interaction between the acoustic and electronic edge states in graphene may generate significant non-linear effects leading to the existence of acoustic solitons in such systems.
Recent theoretical considerations have demonstrated that freestanding graphene doped with alkali metals (AC x ) supports strong Dirac and weak acoustic plasmons. Here we show that when AC x is deposited on a metallic surface, the intense Coulomb screening completely washes out these collective modes. However, even small increase of separation between AC x and metallic surface causes recovery of AC x plasmonic properties and especially the enhancement of acoustic plasmons intensities not present in the freestanding case. We further provide the physical background of these intriguing phenomena. …
The dynamical analog of the Kohn Anomaly image of the Fermi Surface is demonstrated for the response functions to the surface acoustic waves in Quantum Hall Systems near $ν= 1/2$. Kinks appear in the velocity shift $Delta s/s$ and attenuation coefficient $Γ$. The effect is considerably enhanced under periodic modulation and should be observable.

We introduce a new generic model of a deformed Composite Fermion-Fermi Surface (CF-FS) for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect near $/nu=1/2$ in the presence of a periodic density modulation. Our model permits us to explain recent Surface Acoustic Wave observations of anisotropic anomalies [1,2] in sound velocity and attenuation- appearance of peaks and anisotropy - which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation. The calculated magnetic field and wave vector dependence of the CF conductivity, velocity shift …
We introduce a new generic model of a deformed Composite Fermion-Fermi Surface (CF-FS) for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect near $ν=1/2$ in the presence of a periodic density modulation. We launch surface acoustic waves (SAW) along both the $<110>$ and the $<1\bar{1}0>$ directions of a Hall bar and measure the anisotropic conductivity in a high purity GaAs 2-D electron system in the Quantum Hall regime of the stripe and the bubble phases. In the anisotropic stripe phase, SAW propagating along the "easy" $<110>$ direction sense a compressible behavior (finite resistance) which is seen in standard transport measurement only if current flows along the "hard" $<1\bar{1}0>$ direction. In the isotropic bubble phase, the SAW data show compressible behavior in both directions, in mark…
The high-frequency conductivity of Si delta-doped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures is studied in the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime, using acoustic methods. Both the real and the imaginary parts of the complex conductivity are determined from the experimentally observed magnetic field and temperature dependences of the velocity and the attenuation of a surface acoustic wave. It is demonstrated that in the structures studied the mechanism of low-temperature conductance near the QHE plateau centers is hopping. It is also shown that at magnetic fields corresponding to filling factors 2 and …
Spin Hall effect in a nonlocal spin-injection device is theoretically studied. Using a nonlocal spin-injection technique, a pure spin current is created in a nonmagnetic metal (N). The spin current flowing in N is deflected by spin-orbit scattering to induce the Hall current in the transverse direction and accumulate charge at the edges of N, yielding the spin-current induced Hall effect. We propose a method for extracting information for spin-orbit scattering in nonmagnetic metals.
Many intriguing phenomena occur for electrons under strong magnetic fields. Recently, it was proposed that an appropriate strain texture in graphene can induce a synthetic gauge field, in which the electrons behave like in a real magnetic field. This opened the door to control quantum transport by mechanical means and to explore unprecedented physics in high-field regime. Such studies have been achieved in molecular and photonic lattices. Here we report the first experimental realization of giant uniform pseudomagnetic field in acoustics by introducing a simple uniaxial deformation to acoustic…
We show that acoustic crystalline wave gives rise to an effect similar to that of a gravitational wave to an electron gas. Applying this idea to a two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime, this allows for experimental study of its dynamical gravitational response. To study such response we generalize Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states to situations where the external metric is time-dependent. We show that such time-dependent metric (generated by acoustic or effective gravitational wave) couples to collective modes of the system, includ…
Topologically protected surface modes of classical waves hold the promise to enable a variety of applications ranging from robust transport of energy to reliable information processing networks. The integer quantum Hall effect has delivered on that promise in the electronic realm through high-precision metrology devices. However, both the route of implementing an analogue of the quantum Hall effect as well as the quantum spin Hall effect are obstructed for acoustics by the requirement of a magnetic field, or the presence of fermionic quantum statistics, respectively. Here, we use a two-dimensi…
In case of a of the heterostructure n-GaAs/AlGaAs with sheet density $n=2 \times 10^{11}$cm$^{-2}$ and mobility $μ\approx 2 \times 10^6$ cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s with integer and fractional quantum Hall effect (IQHE and FQHE, respectively) we demonstrate the wide applicability of acoustic methods for determining the general conduction parameters of a two dimensional electron gas. We also examine the mechanisms of low-temperature conductivity in the minima of oscillations of high frequency conductivity in the IQHE and FQHE regimes. In the magnetic field region where electrons are delocalized, the param…
We predict spin Hall angles up to 80% for ultrathin noble metal films with substitutional Bi impurities. The colossal spin Hall effect is caused by enhancement of the spin Hall conductivity in reduced sample dimension and a strong reduction of the charge conductivity by resonant impurity scattering. These findings can be exploited to create materials with high efficiency of charge to spin current conversion by strain engineering.
A nonlinear magnetoresistance - called unidirectional spin-Hall magnetoresistance - is recently experimentally discovered in metallic bilayers consisting of a heavy metal and a ferromagnetic metal. To study the fundamental mechanism of the USMR, both ferromagnetic and heavy metallic layer thickness dependence of the USMR are presented in a Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer at room temperature. To avoid ambiguities, second harmonic Hall measurements are used for separating spin-Hall and thermal contributions to the non-linear magnetoresistance. The experimental results are fitted by using a drift-diffusion t…
We study the mechanisms of the spin Hall effect (SHE) and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in 3$d$ ferromagnetic metals (Fe, Co, permalloy (Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$; Py), and Ni) by varying their resistivities and temperature. At low temperatures where the phonon scattering is negligible, the skew scattering coefficients of the SHE and AHE in Py are related to its spin polarization. However, this simple relation breaks down for Py at higher temperatures as well as for the other ferromagnetic metals at any temperature. We find that, in general, the relation between the SHE and AHE is more complex, with th…
This study investigates the occurrence of acoustic topological edge states in a 2D phononic elastic waveguide due to a phenomenon that is the acoustic analogue of the quantum valley Hall effect. We show that a topological transition takes place between two lattices having broken space inversion symmetry due to the application of a tunable strain field. This condition leads to the formation of gapless edge states at the domain walls, as further illustrated by the analysis of the bulk-edge correspondence and of the associated topological invariants. Although time reversal symmetry is still intac…
We have studied the relationship between the structure and the spin Hall angle of the early 5d transition metals in X/CoFeB/MgO (X=Hf, Ta, W, Re) heterostructures. Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) is used to characterize the spin Hall angle of the heavy metals. Transmission electron microscopy images show that all underlayers are amorphous-like when their thicknesses are small, however, crystalline phases emerge as the thickness is increased for certain elements. We find that the heavy metal layer thickness dependence of the SMR reflects these changes in structure. The spin Hall angle largest…
We report on a possible optical tuning of the spin Hall conductivity in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Light beams of frequencies much higher than the energy scale of the system (the \textit{off-resonant} condition) does not excite electrons but rearranges the band structure. The rearrangement is quantitatively established using the Floquet formalism. For such a system of mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, the spin Hall conductivity (calculated with the Kubo expression in presence of disorder) exhibits a drop at higher frequencies and lower intensities. Finally, we comp…
We point out that, contrary to an assertion by Chen, Bergman and Burkov [Phys. Rev. B 88, 125110 (2013)], the non-quantized part of the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity can indeed be expressed as a Fermi-surface property even when Weyl points are present in the bandstructure.
Using time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy we have performed the first investigation of the vibrational modes of gold nanoshells. The fundamental isotropic mode launched by a femtosecond pump pulse manifests itself in a pronounced time-domain modulation of the differential transmission probed at the frequency of nanoshell surface plasmon resonance. The modulation amplitude is significantly stronger and the period is longer than in a gold nanoparticle of the same overall size, in agreement with theoretical calculations. This distinct acoustical signature of nanoshells provides a new and effici…
Based on DFT+U and Berry curvature calculations, we study the electronic structures and topological properties of 3d transition metal (TM) atom (from Ti to Co) adsorbed germanene (TM-germanene). We find that valley-polarized anomalous hall effect (VAHE) can be realized in germanene by adsorbing Cr, Mn, or Co atom on its surface. A finite valley hall voltage can be easily detected in its nanoribbon, which is important for valleytronics devices. Moreover, different valley-polarized current and even reversible valley Hall voltage can be archived by shifting the Fermi energy of the systems. Such v…
Spin pumping in ferromagnets provides a source of pure spin currents. Via the inverse spin Hall effect a spin current is converted into a charge current and a corresponding detectable DC-voltage. The ratio of injected spin current to resulting charge current is given by the spin Hall angle. However, the number of experiments more or less equals the number of different values for spin Hall angles, even for the most studied normal metal platinum. This publication provides a full study of inverse spin Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance for different NiFe(Py) / normal metal bilayers usi…
Spin currents in ferromagnets afford diverse functionalities. We evaluate the extrinsic spin Hall effects of magnetic impurity scattering in ferromagnetic metals. We show that spin-dependent scattering can provide a high spin current polarized perpendicularly to the magnetization direction and is a dominant mechanism in the moderate-conductivity regime. We find that the superposition of the spin-conserve and spin-flip channels causes the spin currents. These findings suggest that optimizing alloy composition is an effective strategy to control the spin Hall effect.
We report on the determination of the anomalous spin Hall angle in the ferromagnetic metal alloy cobalt-iron (Co$_{25}$Fe$_{75}$, CoFe). This is accomplished by measuring the spin injection/detection efficiency in a multiterminal device with nanowires of platinum (Pt) and CoFe deposited onto the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, YIG). Applying a spin-resistor model to our multiterminal spin transport data, we determine the magnon conductivity in YIG, the spin conductance at the YIG/CoFe interface and finally the anomalous spin Hall angle of CoFe as a function of its …
First-principles calculations are applied to study spin Hall effect in semiconductors and simple metals. We found that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity (ISHC) in realistic materials shows rich sign changes, which may be used to distinguish the effect from the extrinsic one. The calculated ISHC in n-doped GaAs can be well compared with experiment, and it differs from the sign obtained from the extrinsic effect. On the other hand, the ISHC in W and Au, which shows opposite sign respectively, is robust and not sensitive to the disorder.
Recent experiments have revealed nonlinear features of the magnetoresistance in metallic bilayers consisting of a heavy-metal (HM) and a ferromagnetic metal (FM). A small change in the lon- gitudinal resistance of the bilayer has been observed when reversing the direction of either the applied in-plane current or the magnetization. We attribute such nonlinear transport behavior to the spin-polarization dependence of the electron mobility in the FM layer acting in concert with the spin accumulation induced in that layer by the spin Hall current originating in the bulk of the HM layer. An explic…
This paper introduces a novel oscillator that combines the tunability of spin Hall-driven nano oscillators with the high quality factor (Q) of high overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators (HBAR), integrating both reference and tunable oscillators on the same chip with CMOS. In such magneto acoustic spin Hall (MASH) oscillators, voltage oscillations across the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) that arise from a spin-orbit torque (SOT) are shaped by the transmission response of the HBAR that acts as a multiple peak-bandpass filter and a delay element due to its large time constant, providing delayed…
Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) is studied in metallic bilayers that consist of heavy metal (HM) layer and a ferromagnetic metal (FM) layer. We find nearly a ten-fold increase of SMR in W/CoFeB compared to previously studied HM/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) systems. The SMR increases with decreasing temperature despite the negligible change in the W layer resistivity with temperature. A model is developed to account for the absorption of the longitudinal spin current to the FM layer, one of the key characteristics of a metallic ferromagnet. We find that the model not only quantitatively descr…
In transition-metal dichalcogenides, electrons in the K-valleys can experience both Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. In this work, we show that the coexistence of Ising and Rashba spin-orbit couplings leads to a special type of valley Hall effect, which we call spin-orbit coupling induced valley Hall effect. Importantly, near the conduction band edge, the valley-dependent Berry curvatures generated by spin-orbit couplings are highly tunable by external gates and dominate over the intrinsic Berry curvatures originating from orbital degrees of freedom under accessible experimental conditio…
Scattering by multiple scatterers sometimes gives rise to nontrivial consequences such as anomalous Hall effect. We here study a mechanism for anomalous Hall effect which originates from the correlation of nonmagnetic impurities and localized moments; a Hall effect induced by vector spin chirality. Using a scattering theory approach, we study the skew scattering induced by the scattering processes that involve two magnetic moments and a non-magnetic impurity, which is proportional to the vector spin chirality of the spins in the vicinity of the non-magnetic impurity. Furthermore, we show that …
The detection of ultrashort laser-generated acoustic pulses at a metal surface and the reconstruction of the acoustic strain profile are investigated. A 2 ps-long acoustic pulse generated in an SrRuO$_{3}$ layer propagates through an adjacent gold layer and is detected at its surface by a reflected probe pulse. We show that the intricate shape of the transient reflectivity waveform and the ability to resolve acoustic pulses shorter than the optical skin depth are controlled by a single parameter, which is determined by the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the photoelastic constant of t…
Recently, signatures of nonlinear Hall effects induced by Berry-curvature dipoles have been found in atomically thin 1T'/Td-WTe$_2$. In this work, we show that in strained polar transition-metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) with 2H-structures, Berry-curvature dipoles created by spin degrees of freedom lead to strong nonlinear Hall effects. Under an easily accessible uniaxial strain of order 0.2%, strong nonlinear Hall signals, characterized by a Berry-curvature dipole on the order of 1Å, arise in electron-doped polar TMDs such as MoSSe, and this is easily detectable experimentally. Moreover, the magn…
This paper presents experimental evidence of the existence of acoustic valley Hall (AVHE) edge states in topological elastic waveguides. The fundamental lattice is assembled based on a non-resonant unit where space inversion symmetry (SIS) is broken by simply perturbing the underlying lattice geometry. This aspect is in net contrast with existing elastic AVHE designs that exploit locally-resonant units and require the addition of masses in order to break SIS. The experimental results presented in this study validate findings so far presented only at theoretical and numerical level. In particul…
We engineer quantum anomalous Hall effect in silicene via doping 3d transition metals. We show that there exists a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect in Vanadium doped silicene using both analytical model and Wannier interpolation. We also predict the quantum valley Hall effect and electrically tunable topological states could be realized in certain transition metal doped silicene where the energy band inversion occurs. Our finding provides new scheme for the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect and platform for electrically controllable topological states.
We demonstrate that single-layer graphene in the presence of a metal gate displays a gapless collective (plasmon) mode that has a linear dispersion at long wavelengths. We calculate exactly the acoustic-plasmon group velocity at the level of the random phase approximation and carry out microscopic calculations of the one-body spectral function of such system. Despite screening exerted by the metal, we find that graphene's quasiparticle spectrum displays a very rich structure characterized by composite hole-acoustic plasmon satellite bands (that we term for brevity "soundarons"), which can be o…
The interaction of surface acoustic waves (SAW) with $p$-type Si/Si$_{0.87}$Ge$_{0.13}$ heterostructures has been studied for SAW frequencies of 30-300 MHz. For temperatures in the range 0.7$<T<$1.6 K and magnetic fields up to 7 T, the SAW attenuation coefficient $Γ$ and velocity change $ΔV /V$ were found to oscillate with filling factor. Both the real $σ_1$ and imaginary $σ_2$ components of the high-frequency conductivity have been determined and compared with quasi-dc magnetoresistance measurements at temperatures down to 33 mK. By analyzing the ratio of $σ_1$ to $σ_2$, carrier localization …
In ferromagnet/normal metal heterostructures, spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two reciprocal processes that occur concomitantly. Their interplay introduces a dynamic feedback effect interconnecting energy dissipation channels of both magnetization and current. By solving the spin diffusion process in the presence of the spin Hall effect in the normal metal, we show that the dynamic feedback gives rise to: (i) a nonlinear magnetic damping that is crucial to sustain uniform steady-state oscillations of a spin Hall oscillator at large angles. (ii) a frequency dependent spin Hall magnet…
The absorption coefficient for surface acoustic wave $Γ$ and variation in the wave velocity $ΔV/V$ were measured in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures; the above quantities are related to interaction of the wave with two-dimensional electron gas and depend nonlinearly on the power of the wave. Measurements were performed under conditions of the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE), in which case the two-dimensional electron gas was localized in a random fluctuation potential of impurities. The dependences of the components $σ_1(E)$ and $σ_2(E)$ of high-frequency conductivity $σ=σ_1 - iσ_2$ on the elec…
We propose theoretically a reconfigurable two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal sonic crystal with higher-order topology protected by the six-fold, $C_6$, rotation symmetry. The acoustic band gap and band topology can be controlled by rotating the triangular scatterers in each unit-cell. In the nontrivial phase, the sonic crystal realizes the topological spin Hall effect in a higher-order fashion: (i) The edge states emerging in the bulk band gap exhibits partial spin-momentum locking and are gapped due to the reduced spatial symmetry at the edges. (ii) The gapped edge states, on the other hand, stab…
Discussed in the present study are details of the behavior of low-frequency "acoustic" ($ac$) modes in the spectrum of edge magnetoplasma oscillations in axially symmetric degenerate 2D electron systems where electron density distribution $n(\vec r)$ behaves as $n(\vec r \to R)\to 0$ when $r$ approaches the external radius $R$ of the domain occupied by electrons. It is shown that finding the dependence of the spectrum of $ac$-modes on radial ($l$) and azimuthal ($m$) indices when both $l$ and $m$ are small requires axially symmetric solution of the relevant problem. The desires is achieved in …
We study the acoustic phonon response of crystals hosting a gapped time-reversal symmetry breaking electronic state. The phonon effective action can in general acquire a dissipationless "Hall" viscosity, which is determined by the adiabatic Berry curvature of the electron wave function. This Hall viscosity endows the system with a characteristic frequency, ω_v; for acoustic phonons of frequency ω, it shifts the phonon spectrum by an amount of order (ω/ω_v)^2 and it mixes the longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons with a relative amplitude ratio of ω/ω_v and with a phase shift of +/- π/2,…
Motivated by the experimental results of Willett et al [Phys.Rev. Lett., {\bf 78}, 4478 (1997)] we develop a magneto-transport theory for the response of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime near Landau level filling factor $ν= 1/2$ to the surface acoustic wave (SAW) in the presence of an added periodic density modulation. We assume there exists a Composite Fermion Fermi Surface (CF-FS) at $ν= 1/2$, and we show that the deformation of the (CF-FS) due to the density modulation can be at the origin of the observed transport anomalies for the experimental co…
We have measured the surface acoustic wave velocity shift in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure containing a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a low-density regime ($<$ $10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$) at zero magnetic field. The interaction of the surface acoustic wave with the 2DES is not well described by a simple model using low-frequency conductivity measurements. We speculate that this conflict is a result of inhomogeneities in the 2DES which become very important at low density. This has implications for the putative metal-insulator transition in two dimensions.
We study the phase structure and Hall conductance quantization in weakly coupled multi-layer electron systems in the integer quantum Hall regime. We derive an effective field theory and perform a two-loop renormalization group calculation. It is shown that (i) finite interlayer tunnelings (however small) give rise to successive metallic and insulating phases and metal-insulator transitions in the unitary universality class. (ii) The Hall conductivity is not renormalized in the metallic phases in the 3D regime. (iii) The Hall conductances are quantized in the insulating phases. In the bulk quan…
We report a procedure to determine the frequency-dependent conductance of quantum Hall structures in a broad frequency domain. The procedure is based on the combination of two known probeless methods -- acoustic spectroscopy and microwave spectroscopy. By using the acoustic spectroscopy, we study the low-frequency attenuation and phase shift of a surface acoustic wave in a piezoelectric crystal in the vicinity of the electron (hole) layer. The electronic contribution is resolved using its dependence on a transverse magnetic field. At high frequencies, we study the attenuation of an electromagn…
