In this paper we study finite element discretizations of a surface vector-Laplace eigenproblem. We consider two known classes of finite element methods, namely one based on a vector analogon of the Dziuk-Elliott surface finite element method and one based on the so-called trace finite element technique. A key ingredient in both classes of methods is a penalization method that is used to enforce tangentiality of the vector field in a weak sense. This penalization and the perturbations that arise from numerical approximation of the surface lead to essential nonconformities in the discretization of the variational formulation of the vector-Laplace eigenproblem. We present a general abstract framework applicable to such nonconforming discretizations of eigenproblems. Error bounds both for eigenvalue and eigenvector approximations are derived that depend on certain consistency and approximability parameters. Sharpness of these bounds is discussed. Results of a numerical experiment illustrate certain convergence properties of such finite element discretizations of the surface vector-Laplace eigenproblem.
Sparse eigenproblems are important for various applications in computer graphics. The spectrum and eigenfunctions of the Laplace--Beltrami operator, for example, are fundamental for methods in shape analysis and mesh processing. The Subspace Iteration Method is a robust solver for these problems. In practice, however, Lanczos schemes are often faster. In this paper, we introduce the Hierarchical Subspace Iteration Method (HSIM), a novel solver for sparse eigenproblems that operates on a hierarchy of nested vector spaces. The hierarchy is constructed such that on the coarsest space all eigenpai…
Certain applications that analyze damping effects require the solution of quadratic eigenvalue problems (QEPs). We use refined isogeometric analysis (rIGA) to solve quadratic eigenproblems. rIGA discretization, while conserving desirable properties of maximum-continuity isogeometric analysis (IGA), reduces the interconnection between degrees of freedom by adding low-continuity basis functions. This connectivity reduction in rIGA's algebraic system results in faster matrix LU factorizations when using multifrontal direct solvers. We compare computational costs of rIGA versus those of IGA when e…
In this paper, a unified family, for any $n\geqslant 2$ and $1\leqslant k\leqslant n-1$, of nonconforming finite element schemes are presented for the primal weak formulation of the $n$-dimensional Hodge-Laplace equation on $HΛ^k\cap H^*_0Λ^k$ and on the simplicial subdivisions of the domain. The finite element scheme possesses an $\mathcal{O}(h)$-order convergence rate for sufficiently regular data, and an $\mathcal{O}(h^s)$-order rate on any $s$-regular domain, $0<s\leqslant 1$, no matter what topology the domain has.
The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a relatively recent boundary element method that allows the approximation of solutions to PDEs without the need of a fundamental solution. A theoretical framework for the convergence analysis of SBFEM is proposed here. This is achieved by defining a space of semi-discrete functions and constructing an interpolation operator onto this space. We prove error estimates for this interpolation operator and show that optimal convergence to the solution can be obtained in SBFEM. These theoretical results are backed by a numerical example.

For conforming finite element approximations of the Laplacian eigenfunctions, a fully computable guaranteed error bound in the $L^2$ norm sense is proposed. The bound is based on the a priori error estimate for the Galerkin projection of the conforming finite element method, and has an optimal speed of convergence for the eigenfunctions with the worst regularity. The resulting error estimate bounds the distance of spaces of exact and approximate eigenfunctions and, hence, is robust even in the case of multiple and tightly clustered eigenvalues. The accuracy of the proposed bound is illustrated…
In mixed finite element approximations of Hodge Laplace problems associated with the de Rham complex, the exterior derivative operators are computed exactly, so the spatial locality is preserved. However, the numerical approximations of the associated coderivatives are nonlocal and it can be regarded as an undesired effect of standard mixed methods. For numerical methods with local coderivatives a perturbation of low order mixed methods in the sense of variational crimes has been developed for simplicial and cubical meshes. In this paper we extend the low order method to all high orders on cub…
We derive optimal and asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates for the approximation of the Laplace eigenvalue problem. To do so, we combine two results from the literature. First, we use the hypercircle techniques developed for mixed eigenvalue approximations with Raviart-Thomas Finite elements. In addition, we use the post-processings introduced for the eigenvalue and eigenfunction based on mixed approximations with the Brezzi-Douglas-Marini Finite element. To combine these approaches, we define a novel additional local post-processing for the fluxes that appropriately modifies the …
For a generalized Hodge Laplace equation, we prove the quasi-optimal convergence rate of an adaptive mixed finite element method. This adaptive method can control the error in the natural mixed variational norm when the space of harmonic forms is trivial. In particular, we obtain new quasi-optimal adaptive mixed methods for the Hodge Laplace, Poisson, and Stokes equations. Comparing to existing adaptive mixed methods, the new methods control errors in both variables.
We consider numerical approximations of spectral fractional Laplace-Beltrami problems on closed surfaces. The proposed numerical algorithms rely on their Balakrishnan integral representation and consist of a sinc quadrature coupled with standard finite element methods for parametric surfaces. Possibly up to a log term, optimal rates of convergence are observed and derived analytically when the discrepancies between the exact solution and its numerical approximations are measured in $L^2$ and $H^1$. The performances of the algorithms are illustrated in different settings including the approxima…

In this paper, we propose a new trace finite element method for the {Laplace-Beltrami} eigenvalue problem. The method is proposed directly on a smooth manifold which is implicitly given by a level-set function and require high order numerical quadrature on the surface. A comprehensive analysis for the method is provided. We show that the eigenvalues of the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator coincide with only part of the eigenvalues of an embedded problem, which further corresponds to the finite eigenvalues for a singular generalized algebraic eigenvalue problem. The finite eigenvalues can be …

We introduce a new local meshfree method for the approximation of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth surface of co-dimension one embedded in $\R^3$. A key element of this method is that it does not need an explicit expression of the surface, which can be simply defined by a set of scattered nodes. It does not require expressions for the surface normal vectors and for the curvature of the surface neither, which are approximated using formulas derived in the paper. An additional advantage is that it is a local method and, hence, the matrix that approximates the Laplace-Beltrami operator i…
A method for the analytical evaluation of layer potentials arising in the collocation boundary element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equation is developed for piecewise flat boundary elements with polynomial shape functions. The method is based on dimension-reduction via the divergence theorem and a Recursive scheme for evaluating the resulting line Integrals for Polynomial Elements (RIPE). It is used to evaluate single layer, double layer, adjoint double layer, and hypersingular potentials, for both the Laplace and the Helmholtz kernels. It naturally supports nearly singular, singular,…

We present a survey of the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equations. For the latter, we present a new abstract analysis, based on weaker assumptions on the stabilization, and numerical results on the dispersion analysis, including comparison with the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin method.
In this paper, we develop two finite element formulations for the Laplace problem and find the way in which they are equivalent. Then we compare the solutions obtained by both formulations, by changing the order of the shape functions and the refinement level of the mesh (star with rhomboidal elements). And, we will give an overview of MFEM library from the LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), as it is the library used to obtain the solutions.
This work presents uniform preconditioners for the discrete Laplace--Beltrami operator on hypersurfaces. In particular, within the framework of fast auxiliary space preconditioning (FASP), we develop efficient and user-friendly multilevel preconditioners for the Laplace--Beltrami type equation discretized by Lagrange, nonconforming linear, and discontinuous Galerkin elements. The analysis applies to semi-definite problems on a closed surface. Numerical experiments on 2d surfaces and 3d hypersurfaces are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed preconditioners.
