Locally recoverable (LRC) codes provide a solution to single node failure in distributed storage systems, where it is a very common problem. On the other hand, linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are useful in fault injections attacks on storage systems. In this paper, we establish a connection between LRC codes and LCD codes. We derive some conditions on the construction of cyclic LRC codes so that they are also LCD codes. A lower bound on the minimum distance of such codes is determined. Some examples have been given to explain the construction.
We consider linear cyclic codes with the locality property, or locally recoverable codes (LRC codes). A family of LRC codes that generalize the classical construction of Reed-Solomon codes was constructed in a recent paper by I. Tamo and A. Barg (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, no. 8, 2014). In this paper we focus on optimal cyclic codes that arise from this construction. We give a characterization of these codes in terms of their zeros, and observe that there are many equivalent ways of constructing optimal cyclic LRC codes over a given field. We also study subfield subcodes of cyclic LRC codes (…
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) have emerged as an important coding scheme in distributed storage systems (DSSs) with relatively low repair cost by accessing fewer non-failure nodes. Theoretical bounds and optimal constructions of LRCs have been widely investigated. Optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes provide significant benefit of elegant algebraic structure and efficient encoding procedure. In this paper, we continue to consider the constructions of optimal LRCs via cyclic and constacyclic codes with long code length. Specifically, we first obtain two classes of $q$-ary cyclic Sin…

We prove a new lower bound on the field size of locally repairable codes (LRCs). Additionally, we construct maximally recoverable (MR) codes which are cyclic. While a known construction for MR codes has the same parameters, it produces non-cyclic codes. Furthermore, we prove both necessary conditions and sufficient conditions that specify when the known non-cyclic MR codes may be permuted to become cyclic, thus proving our construction produces cyclic MR codes with new parameters. Furthermore, using our new bound on the field size, we show that the new cyclic MR codes have optimal field size i…
Locally recoverable (LRC) codes and their variants have been extensively studied in recent years. In this paper we focus on cyclic constructions of LRC codes and derive conditions on the zeros of the code that support the property of hierarchical locality. As a result, we obtain a general family of hierarchical LRC codes for a new range of code parameters. We also observe that our approach enables one to represent an LRC code in quasicyclic form, and use this representation to construct tail-biting convolutional LRC codes with locality. Among other results, we extend the general approach to cy…
Locally repairable codes with locality $r$ ($r$-LRCs for short) were introduced by Gopalan et al. \cite{1} to recover a failed node of the code from at most other $r$ available nodes. And then $(r,δ)$ locally repairable codes ($(r,δ)$-LRCs for short) were produced by Prakash et al. \cite{2} for tolerating multiple failed nodes. An $r$-LRC can be viewed as an $(r,2)$-LRC. An $(r,δ)$-LRC is called optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound. It has been a great challenge to construct $q$-ary optimal $(r,δ)$-LRCs with length much larger than $q$. Surprisingly, Luo et al. \cite{3} presented a …
An $(r, δ)$-locally repairable code ($(r, δ)$-LRC for short) was introduced by Prakash et al. \cite{Prakash2012} for tolerating multiple failed nodes in distributed storage systems, which was a generalization of the concept of $r$-LRCs produced by Gopalan et al. \cite{Gopalan2012}. An $(r, δ)$-LRC is said to be optimal if it achieves the Singleton-like bound. Recently, Chen et al. \cite{Chen2018} generalized the construction of cyclic $r$-LRCs proposed by Tamo et al. \cite{Tamo2015,Tamo2016} and constructed several classes of optimal $(r, δ)$-LRCs of length $n$ for $n\, |\, (q-1)$ or $n\,|\, (…
A code is said to be a $r$-local locally repairable code (LRC) if each of its coordinates can be repaired by accessing at most $r$ other coordinates. When some of the $r$ coordinates are also erased, the $r$-local LRC can not accomplish the local repair, which leads to the concept of $(r,δ)$-locality. A $q$-ary $[n, k]$ linear code $\cC$ is said to have $(r, δ)$-locality ($δ\ge 2$) if for each coordinate $i$, there exists a punctured subcode of $\cC$ with support containing $i$, whose length is at most $r + δ- 1$, and whose minimum distance is at least $δ$. The $(r, δ)$-LRC can tolerate $δ-1$ …
In this work codes with availability are constructed based on the cyclic \emph{locally repairable code} (LRC) construction by Tamo et al. and their extension to $(r,ρ)$-locality by Chen et al. The minimum distance of these codes is increased by carefully extending their defining set. We give a bound on the dimension of LRCs with availability and orthogonal repair sets and show that the given construction is optimal for a range of parameters.
In addition to their applications in data storage, communications systems, and consumer electronics, LCD codes -- a class of linear codes -- have been employed in cryptography recently. LCD cyclic codes were referred to as reversible cyclic codes in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct several families of reversible cyclic codes over finite fields and analyse their parameters. The LCD cyclic codes presented in this paper have very good parameters in general, and contain many optimal codes. A well rounded treatment of reversible cyclic codes is also given in this paper.
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$, i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this work, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$, di…
Cyclic codes are an interesting type of linear codes and have wide applications in communication and storage systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. It was proved that asymptotically good Hermitian LCD codes exist. The objective of this paper is to construct some cyclic Hermitian LCD codes over finite fields and analyse their parameters. The dimensions of these codes are settled and the lower bounds on their minimum distances are presented. Most Hermitian LCD codes presented in this paper are not BCH codes. In addition, we employ Hermitian LCD codes to propose a Hermit…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$, a prime power integer such that $q=et+1$ where $t\geq 1,e\geq 2$ are integers. In this paper, we study cyclic codes of length $n$ over a non-chain ring $R_{e,q}=\mathbb{F}_q[u]/\langle u^e-1\rangle$. We define a Gray map $φ$ and obtain many { maximum-distance-separable} (MDS) and optimal $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear codes from the Gray images of cyclic codes. Under certain conditions we determine { linear complementary dual} (LCD) codes of length $n$ when $\gcd(n,q)\neq 1$ and $\gcd(n,q)= 1$, respectively. It is proved that { a} cyclic code $\mathcal…
LCD codes are linear codes that intersect with their dual trivially. Quasi cyclic codes that are LCD are characterized and studied by using their concatenated structure. Some asymptotic results are derived. Hermitian LCD codes are introduced to that end and their cyclic subclass is characterized. Constructions of QCCD codes from codes over larger alphabets are given.
Historically, LCD cyclic codes were referred to as reversible cyclic codes, which had application in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest on LCD codes. In this paper, we explore two special families of LCD cyclic codes, which are both BCH codes. The dimensions and the minimum distances of these LCD BCH codes are investigated. As a byproduct, the parameters of some primitive BCH codes are also obtained.
The aim of this paper is to give conditions for the equivalency between skew constacyclic codes, skew cyclic codes and skew negacyclic codes defined over semi-local rings. Also, we provide construction and an enumeration of Euclidean and Hermitian skew LCD cyclic codes over $ \mathbb{F}_{p^{t}}+ v \mathbb{F}_{p^{t}} $. Several optimal LCD codes are obtained from Gray images of LCD skew codes over semi-local rings.
A code is called a locally repairable code (LRC) if any code symbol is a function of a small fraction of other code symbols. When a locally repairable code is employed in a distributed storage systems, an erased symbol can be recovered by accessing only a small number of other symbols, and hence alleviating the network resources required during the repair process. In this paper we consider repeated-root constacyclic codes, which is a generalization of cyclic codes, that are optimal with respect to a Singleton-like bound on minimum distance. An LRC with the structure of a constacyclic code can …
Linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic codes were referred historically to as reversible cyclic codes, which had applications in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest in LCD codes. In particular, it has been shown that binary LCD codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. In this paper, we first present a new characterization of binary LCD codes in terms of their symplectic basis. Using such a characterization,we solve a conjecture proposed by Galvez et al. on the minim…
Generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes form a natural generalization of quasi-cyclic (QC) codes. They are viewed here as mixed alphabet codes over a family of ring alphabets. Decomposing these rings into local rings by the Chinese Remainder Theorem yields a decomposition of GQC codes into a sum of concatenated codes. This decomposition leads to a trace formula, a minimum distance bound, and to a criteria for the GQC code to be self-dual or to be linear complementary dual (LCD). Explicit long GQC codes that are LCD, but not QC, are exhibited.
In this paper, we clarify some aspects on LCD codes in the literature. We first prove that a non-free LCD code does not exist over finite commutative Frobenius local rings. We then obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of LCD code over finite commutative Frobenius rings. We later show that a free constacyclic code over finite chain ring is LCD if and only if it is reversible, and also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a constacyclic code to be reversible over finite chain rings. We illustrate the minimum Lee-distance of LCD codes over some finite commutat…
Linear complementary pairs (LCP) of codes play an important role in armoring implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. One of the most common ways to construct LCP of codes is to use Euclidean linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of linear codes with $σ$ complementary dual ($σ$-LCD), which includes known Euclidean LCD codes, Hermitian LCD codes, and Galois LCD codes. As Euclidean LCD codes, $σ$-LCD codes can also be used to construct LCP of codes. We show that, for $q > 2$, all q-ary linear codes are $σ$-LCD and th…
We establish a complete classification of binary group codes with complementary duals for a finite group and explicitly determine the number of linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic group codes by using cyclotomic cosets. The dimension and the minimum distance for LCD group codes are explored. Finally, we find a connection between LCD MDS group codes and maximal ideals.
One of the most important and challenging problems in coding theory is to construct codes with best possible parameters and properties. The class of quasi-cyclic (QC) codes is known to be fertile to produce such codes. Focusing on QC codes over the binary field, we have found 113 binary QC codes that are new among the class of QC codes using an implementation of a fast cyclic partitioning algorithm and the highly effective ASR algorithm. Moreover, these codes have the following additional properties: a) they have the same parameters as best known linear codes, and b) many of the have additiona…
In this paper we study the relationship between vectorial (Boolean) functions and cyclic codes in the context of algebraic attacks. We first derive a direct link between the annihilators of a vectorial function (in univariate form) and certain $2^{n}$-ary cyclic codes (which we prove that they are LCD codes) extending results due to Rønjom and Helleseth. The knowledge of the minimum distance of those codes gives rise to a lower bound on the algebraic immunity of the associated vectorial function. Furthermore, we solve an open question raised by Mesnager and Cohen. We also present some properti…
Let $f(u)$ and $g(v)$ be any two polynomials of degree $k$ and $\ell$ respectively ($k$ and $\ell$ are not both $1$), which split into distinct linear factors over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Let $\mathcal{R}=\mathbb{F}_{q}[u,v]/\langle f(u),g(v),uv-vu\rangle$ be a finite commutative non-chain ring. In this paper, we study polyadic codes and their extensions over the ring $\mathcal{R}$. We give examples of some polyadic codes which are optimal with respect to Griesmer type bound for rings. A Gray map is defined from $\mathcal{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{F}^{k\ell n}_q$ which preserves duality. The Gray ima…
Recently, locally repairable codes has gained significant interest for their potential applications in distributed storage systems. However, most constructions in existence are over fields with size that grows with the number of servers, which makes the systems computationally expensive and difficult to maintain. Here, we study linear locally repairable codes over the binary field, tolerating multiple local erasures. We derive bounds on the minimum distance on such codes, and give examples of LRCs achieving these bounds. Our main technical tools come from matroid theory, and as a byproduct of …
Locally repairable codes, or locally recoverable codes (LRC for short) are designed for application in distributed and cloud storage systems. Similar to classical block codes, there is an important bound called the Singleton-type bound for locally repairable codes. In this paper, an optimal locally repairable code refers to a block code achieving this Singleton-type bound. Like classical MDS codes, optimal locally repairable codes carry some very nice combinatorial structures. Since introduction of the Singleton-type bound for locally repairable codes, people have put tremendous effort on cons…
