We study asymptotics of three point coefficients (light-light-heavy) and two point correlators in heavy states in unitary, compact $2$D CFTs. We prove an upper and lower bound on such quantities using numerically assisted Tauberian techniques. We obtain an optimal upper bound on the spectrum of operators appearing with fixed spin from the OPE of two identical scalars. While all the CFTs obey this bound, rational CFTs come close to saturating it. This mimics the scenario of bounds on asymptotic density of states and thereby pronounces an universal feature in asymptotics of 2D CFTs. Next, we clarify the role of smearing in interpreting the asymptotic results pertaining to considerations of eigenstate thermalization in 2D CFTs. In the context of light-light-heavy three point coefficients, we find that the order one number in the bound is sensitive to how close the light operators are from the $\frac{c}{32}$ threshold. In context of two point correlator in heavy state, we find the presence of an enigmatic regime which separates the $AdS_3$ thermal physics and the BTZ black hole physics. Furthermore, we present some new numerical results on the behavior of spherical conformal block.
Since many thermodynamic properties of black holes are universal, the thermodynamics of their holographic duals should be universal too. We show how this universality is exhibited in the example of symmetric orbifolds of general two dimensional CFTs. We discuss the free energies and phase diagrams of such theories and show that they are indeed universal in the large N limit. We also comment on the implications of our results for the classification of CFTs that can have an interpretation as holographic duals to gravity theories on AdS(3).
The thermodynamic stability of large AdS$_3$ black holes implies that Cardy's $Δ\rightarrow\infty$ formula for the density of states remains approximately valid when $Δ\sim c$ in holographic 2d CFTs, constraining their light spectra. Averaged OPE coefficients take a similarly universal asymptotic form, and black hole arguments again imply an extended regime of validity. In this note we study conditions under which the OPE asymptotics extend to $Δ\sim c$ at large central charge. Some of the conditions found are stronger than required by an extended Cardy regime and are violated by permutation o…
Motivated by a low-energy effective description of gauge theory/string theory duality, we conjecture that the dynamics of $SO(4)$-invariant states in a large class of four-dimensional conformal gauge theories on $S^3$ with non-equal central charges $c\ne a$ are universal on time scales $t_{\rm universal}\propto ({\cal E}-{\cal E}_{\rm vacuum})^{-1}$, in the limit where the energy ${\cal E}\to {\cal E}_{\rm vacuum}$. We show that low-energy excitations in $c\ne a$ CFTs do not thermalize in this limit. The holographic universality conjecture then implies that within the Einstein-scalar field sys…
In the framework of AdS$_3$/ CFT$_2$ correspondence, we present a systematic analysis of the late time thermalization of a two dimensional CFT state created by insertion of small number of heavy operators on the vacuum. We show that at late Lorentzian time, the universal features of this thermalization are solely captured by the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix corresponding to the solutions of the uniformization equation. We discuss two different ways to extract the monodromy eigenvalues while bypassing the need for finding explicitly the full monodromy matrix - first, using a monodromy pr…
$AdS_5$ type IIb supergravity compactifications on five-dimensional Einstein manifolds ${\cal V}_5$ realize holographic duals to four-dimensional conformal field theories. Black holes in such geometries are dual to thermal states in these CFTs. When black holes become sufficiently small in (global) $AdS_5$, they are expected to suffer Gregory-Laflamme instability with respect to localization on ${\cal V}_5$. Previously, the instability was demonstrated for gravitational dual of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, where ${\cal V}_5=S^5$. We extend stability analysis to arbitrary ${\cal V}_5$. We point out that t…
The behavior of holographic CFTs is constrained by the existence of a bulk dual geometry. For example, in (2+1)-dimensional holographic CFTs living on a static spacetime with compact spatial slices, the vacuum energy must be nonpositive, certain averaged energy densities must be nonpositive, and the spectrum of scalar operators is bounded from below by the Ricci scalar of the CFT geometry. Are these results special to holographic CFTs? Here we show that for perturbations about appropriate backgrounds, they are in fact universal to all CFTs, as they follow from the universal behavior of two- an…
Two-dimensional conformal field theories at large central charge and with a sufficiently sparse spectrum of light states have been shown to exhibit universal thermodynamics. This thermodynamics matches that of AdS$_3$ gravity, with a Hawking-Page transition between thermal AdS and the BTZ black hole. We extend these results to correlation functions of light operators. Upon making some additional assumptions, such as large $c$ factorization of correlators, we establish that the thermal AdS and BTZ solutions emerge as the universal backgrounds for the computation of correlators. In particular, W…
We argue that the thermodynamics of conformal field theories with AdS duals exhibits a remarkable universality. At strong coupling, a Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula holds even when R-charges or bulk supergravity scalars are turned on. In such a setting, the Casimir entropy can be identified with a generalized C-function that changes monotonically with temperature as well as when non-trivial bulk scalar fields are introduced. We generalize the Cardy-Verlinde formula to cases where no subextensive part of the energy is present and further observe that such a formula is valid for the N=4 super Ya…
There appears a universal logarithmic term of entanglement entropy, i.e., $-a(Ω) \log(H/δ)$, for 3d CFTs when the entangling surface has a sharp corner. $a(Ω)$ is a function of the corner opening angle and behaves as $a(Ω\to π)\simeq σ(π-Ω)^2$ and $a(Ω\to 0)\simeq κ/Ω$, respectively. Recently, it is conjectured that $σ/C_T=π^2/24 $, where $C_T$ is central charge in the stress tensor correlator, is universal for general CFTs in three dimensions. In this paper, by applying the general higher curvature gravity, we give a holographic proof of this conjecture. We also clarify some interesting probl…
I describe the parton picture at strong coupling emerging from the gauge/gravity duality, with emphasis on the universality of the phenomenon of parton saturation. I discuss several consequences of this picture for the phenomenology of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma, which are potentially relevant for heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.

We begin by explicating a recent proof of the cluster decomposition principle in AdS_{d+1} from the CFT_d bootstrap in d > 2. The CFT argument also computes the leading interactions between distant objects in AdS, and we confirm the universal agreement between the CFT bootstrap and AdS gravity in the semi-classical limit. We proceed to study the generalization to 2d CFTs, which requires knowledge of the Virasoro conformal blocks in a lightcone OPE limit. We compute these blocks in a semiclassical, large central charge approximation, and use them to prove a suitably modified theorem. In particu…
In a previous paper, we have analyzed high energy QCD from AdS-CFT and proved the saturation of the Froissart bound (a purely QCD proof of which is still lacking). In this paper we describe the calculation in more physical terms and map it to QCD language. We find a remarkable agreement with the 1952 Heisenberg description of the saturation (pre-QCD!) in terms of shockwave collisions of pion field distributions. It provides a direct map between gauge theory physics and the gravitational physics on the IR brane of the Randall-Sundrum model. Saturation occurs through black hole production on the…
We introduce spectral functions that capture the distribution of OPE coefficients and density of states in two-dimensional conformal field theories, and show that nontrivial upper and lower bounds on the spectral function can be obtained from semidefinite programming. We find substantial numerical evidence indicating that OPEs involving only scalar Virasoro primaries in a c>1 CFT are necessarily governed by the structure constants of Liouville theory. Combining this with analytic results in modular bootstrap, we conjecture that Liouville theory is the unique unitary c>1 CFT whose primaries hav…
The hypothesis that every theory of quantum gravity in AdS_3 is a dimensional reduction of string/M-theory leads to a natural conjecture for the density of states of two dimensional CFTs with a large central charge limit. We prove this conjecture for 2D CFTs which are orbifolds by permutation groups. In particular, we characterize those permutation groups which give CFTs with well-defined large N limits and can thus serve as holographic duals to bulk gravity theories in AdS_3. We then show that the holographic dual of a permutation orbifold will have a Hagedorn spectrum in the large N limit. T…
We develop the holographic formulation of transport in strongly coupled two-layer systems. We identify a dc conductivity, sigma^dc, that is finite even in a translationally invariant setup, and universal for CFTs with a gravity dual. The thermoelectric conductivity and heat conductivity are fully determined by the electrical conductivity matrix, as a consequence of Ward identities. We use the memory-matrix approach for double-layer systems, together with Ward identities, to show that sigma^dc - extended to finite frequency - has no Drude peak and, similarly, that its universal value is unaffec…
The entanglement "first law" in conformal field theories relates the entanglement entropy for a ball-shaped region to an integral over the same region involving the expectation value of the CFT stress-energy tensor, for infinitesimal perturbations to the CFT vacuum state. In recent work, this was exploited at leading order in $N$ in the context of large N holographic CFTs to show that any geometry dual to a perturbed CFT state must satisfy Einstein's equations linearized about pure AdS. In this note, we investigate the implications of the leading 1/N correction to the exact CFT result. We show…
We study the spectrum of local operators living on a defect in a generic conformal field theory, and their coupling to the local bulk operators. We establish the existence of universal accumulation points in the spectrum at large $s$, $s$ being the charge of the operators under rotations in the space transverse to the defect. Our tools include a formula that inverts the bulk to defect OPE, analogous to the Caron-Huot formula for the four-point function. Analyticity of the formula in $s$ implies that the scaling dimensions of the defect operators are aligned in Regge trajectories $\widehatΔ(s)$…
We present evidence for the universality of the shear viscosity of conformal gauge theory plasmas beyond infinite coupling. We comment of subtleties of computing the shear viscosity in effective models of gauge/gravity correspondence rather than in string theory.
We discuss several aspects of superconformal field theories in four dimensions (CFT_4), in the context of electric-magnetic duality. We analyse the behaviour of anomalous currents under RG flow to a conformal fixed point in N=1, D=4 supersymmetric gauge theories. We prove that the anomalous dimension of the Konishi current is related to the slope of the beta function at the critical point. We extend the duality map to the (nonchiral) Konishi current. As a byproduct we compute the slope of the beta function in the strong coupling regime. We note that the OPE of $T_{μν}$ with itself does not clo…
Pure CFTs have vanishing $β$-function at any value of the coupling. One example of a pure CFT is the O(N) Wess-Zumino model in 2+1 dimensions in the large N limit. This model can be analytically solved at finite temperature for any value of the coupling, and we find that its entropy density at strong coupling is exactly equal to 31/35 of the non-interacting Stefan-Boltzmann result. We show that a large class of theories with equal numbers of N-component fermions and bosons, supersymmetric or not, for a large class of interactions, exhibit the same universal ratio. For unequal numbers of fermio…
We consider the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) for holographic conformal field theories in two spacetime dimensions (CFT$_2$). We show that QNEC saturates for all states dual to vacuum solutions of AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity, including systems that are far from thermal equilibrium. If the Ryu-Takayanagi surface encounters bulk matter QNEC does not need to be saturated, whereby we give both analytical and numerical examples. In particular, for CFT$_2$ with a global quench dual to AdS$_3$-Vaidya geometries we find a curious half-saturation of QNEC for large entangling regions. We also addres…
We prove the universality of the Hernandez-Lopez phase by deriving it from first principles. We find a very simple integral representation for the phase and discuss its possible origin from a nested Bethe ansatz structure. Hopefully, the same kind of derivation could be used to constrain higher orders of the full quantum dressing factor.
We show that at the level of linear response the low frequency limit of a strongly coupled field theory at finite temperature is determined by the horizon geometry of its gravity dual, i.e. by the "membrane paradigm" fluid of classical black hole mechanics. Thus generic boundary theory transport coefficients can be expressed in terms of geometric quantities evaluated at the horizon. When applied to the stress tensor this gives a simple, general proof of the universality of the shear viscosity in terms of the universality of gravitational couplings, and when applied to a conserved current it gi…
We derive several new results for Renyi entropy, $S_n$, across generic entangling surfaces. We establish a perturbative expansion of the Renyi entropy, valid in generic quantum field theories, in deformations of a given density matrix. When applied to even-dimensional conformal field theories, these results lead to new constraints on the $n$-dependence, independent of any perturbative expansion. In 4d CFTs, we show that the $n$-dependence of the universal part of the ground state Renyi entropy for entangling surfaces with vanishing extrinsic curvature contribution is in fact fully determined b…
We analyze deep inelastic scattering at small Bjorken x, using the approximate conformal invariance of QCD at high energies. Hard pomeron exchanges are resummed eikonally, restoring unitarity at large values of the phase shift in the dual AdS geometry. At weak coupling this phase is imaginary, corresponding to a black disk in AdS. In this saturated regime, cross sections exhibit geometric scaling and have a simple universal form, which we test against available experimental data for the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2). We predict, in particular, the dependence of the cross section on the …
The calculation of absorption cross sections for minimal scalars in supergravity backgrounds is an important aspect of the investigation of AdS/CFT correspondence and requires a matching of appropriate wave functions. The low energy case has attracted particular attention. In the following the dependence of the cross section on the matching point is investigated. It is shown that the low energy limit is independent of the matching point and hence exhibits universality. In the high energy limit the independence is not maintained, but the result is believed to possess the correct energy dependen…
We use the conformal bootstrap equations to study the non-perturbative gravitational scattering between infalling and outgoing particles in the vicinity of a black hole horizon in AdS. We focus on irrational 2D CFTs with large $c$ and only Virasoro symmetry. The scattering process is described by the matrix element of two light operators (particles) between two heavy states (BTZ black holes). We find that the operator algebra in this regime is (i) universal and identical to that of Liouville CFT, and (ii) takes the form of an exchange algebra, specified by an R-matrix that exactly matches with…
We study the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in chaotic conformal field theories (CFTs) of arbitrary dimensions. Assuming local ETH, we compute the reduced density matrix of a ball-shaped subsystem of finite size in the infinite volume limit when the full system is an energy eigenstate. This reduced density matrix is close in trace distance to a density matrix, to which we refer as the ETH density matrix, that is independent of all the details of an eigenstate except its energy and charges under global symmetries. In two dimensions, the ETH density matrix is universal for all theori…
We show how the use of standard perturbative RG in dimensional regularization allows for a renormalization group based computation of both the spectrum and a family of coefficients of the operator product expansion (OPE) for a given universality class. The task is greatly simplified by a straightforward generalization of perturbation theory to a functional perturbative RG approach. We illustrate our procedure in the $ε$-expansion by obtaining the next-to-leading corrections for the spectrum and the leading corrections for the OPE coefficients of Ising and Lee-Yang universality classes and then…
We present several results concerning the free energy of odd-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) on squashed spheres. First, we propose a formula which computes this quantity for holographic CFTs dual to higher-curvature gravities with second-order linearized equations of motion. As opposed to standard on-shell action methods for Taub geometries, our formula is automatically UV-finite and only involves a simple evaluation of the corresponding bulk Lagrangian on an auxiliary pure-AdS space. The expression is closely related to the function determining the possible AdS vacua of the bulk …
We study the tricritical Ising universality class using conformal bootstrap techniques. By studying bootstrap constraints originating from multiple correlators on the CFT data of multiple OPEs, we are able to determine the scaling dimension of the spin field $Δ_σ$ in various non-integer dimensions $2 \le d \le 3$. $Δ_σ$ is connected to the critical exponent $η$ that governs the (tri-)critical behaviour of the two point function via the relation, $η= 2 - d + 2 Δ_σ$. Our results for $Δ_σ$ match with the exactly known values in two and three dimensions and are a conjecture for non-integer dimensi…

We consider higher derivative gravity and obtain universal relations for the shape coefficients $(f_a, f_b, f_c)$ of the shape dependent universal part of the Rényi entropy for four dimensional CFTs in terms of the parameters $(c, t_2, t_4)$ of two-point and three-point functions of stress tensors. As a consistency check, these shape coefficients $f_a$ and $f_c$ satisfy the differential relation as derived previously for the Rényi entropy. Interestingly, these holographic relations also apply to weakly coupled conformal field theories such as theories of free fermions and vectors but are viola…
What is the dimension of spacetime? We address this question in the context of the AdS/CFT Correspondence. We give a prescription for computing the number of large bulk dimensions, $D$, from strongly-coupled CFT$_d$ data, where "large" means parametrically of order the AdS scale. The idea is that unitarity of 1-loop AdS amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, fixes $D$ in terms of tree-level data. We make this observation rigorous by deriving a positive-definite sum rule for the 1-loop double-discontinuity in the flat space/bulk-point limit. This enables us to prove an array of AdS/CFT…

We develop an analytic perturbative expansion to study the propagation of entanglement entropy for small subsystems after a global quench, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Opposite to the large interval limit, in this case the evolution of the system takes place at timescales that are shorter in comparison to the local equilibration scale and thus, different physical mechanisms govern the dynamics and subsequent thermalization. In particular, we show that the heuristic picture in terms of a "entanglement tsunami" does not apply in this regime. We find two crucial differences. Firs…
We argue that there exists an infinite class of conformal field theories in diverse dimensions, having a universal ratio of the central charge c to the normalized entropy density c'. The universality class includes all conformal theories which possess a classical gravity dual according to the AdS/CFT correspondence. From the practical point of view, the universality of c/c' provides an explicit test which can be applied to determine whether a given critical point may admit a dual description in terms of classical gravity.
Estimates of the light hadron masses, decay constants and couplings in AdS/QCD models are generally more accurate than should have been expected. Certain predictions based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, such as the ratio of the equilibrium viscosity to entropy density, are universal and therefore provide firm experimental tests of these models. Other observables, while not completely universal, may be relatively insensitive to model details. We calculate the dependence of a number of low-energy hadronic observables on details of the hard-wall AdS/QCD model. In particular, we vary the infrared …

Conformal field theories (CFTs) with MN and tetragonal global symmetry in $d=2+1$ dimensions are relevant for structural, antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic phase transitions in a wide class of materials. The study of these theories with the nonperturbative numerical conformal bootstrap is initiated in this work. Bounds for operator dimensions are obtained and they are found to possess sharp kinks in the MN case, suggesting the existence of full-fledged CFTs. In the tetragonal case, no new kinks are found. Estimates for critical exponents are provided for a few cases describing phase transitio…
We study the Blume-Capel universality class in $d=\frac{10}{3}-ε$ dimensions. The RG flow is extracted by looking at poles in fractional dimension of three loop diagrams using $\overline{\rm MS}$. The theory is the only nontrivial universality class which admits an expansion to three dimensions with $ε=\frac{1}{3}<1$. We compute the relevant scaling exponents and estimate some of the OPE coefficients to the leading order. Our findings agree with and complement CFT results. Finally we discuss a family of nonunitary multicritical models which includes the Lee-Yang and Blume-Capel classes as spec…
As the value of the longitudinal momentum carried by partons in a ultra-relativistic hadron becomes small, one observes a growth of their density. When the parton density becomes close to a value of order $1/α_s$, it does not grow any longer, it saturates. These high density effects seem to be well described by the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. On the experimental side, the LHC provides the best tool ever for reaching the saturated phase of hadronic matter. For this reason saturation physics is a very active branch of QCD during these past and coming years since saturation the…
We attempt to generalize the AdS/CFT correspondence to non-relativistic conformal field theories which are invariant under Galilean transformations. Such systems govern ultracold atoms at unitarity, nucleon scattering in some channels, and more generally, a family of universality classes of quantum critical behavior. We construct a family of metrics which realize these symmetries as isometries. They are solutions of gravity with negative cosmological constant coupled to pressureless dust. We discuss realizations of the dust, which include a bulk superconductor. We develop the holographic dicti…
We establish an exact mapping between the multiplication table of the irreducible representations of SU(3) and the fusion algebra of the two-dimensional conformal field theory in the same universality class of 3D SU(3) gauge theory at the deconfining point. In this way the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture on the critical behaviour of Polyakov lines in the fundamental representation naturally extends to whatever representation one considers. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov lines are determined. Monte Carlo simulations with sources in the symmetric two-ind…
In dynamic critical phenomena, singular behaviors appear not only in the order parameter but also in the other transport coefficients (due to the mode-mode coupling). However, this effect has not been observed in the AdS/CFT duality. We point out that this mode-mode coupling is suppressed by 1/N^2 in the large-N gauge theories which correspond to model H in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin. Thus, the effect cannot be seen in the classical supergravity approximation. We illustrate this point using the example of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at a finite chemical potential. We also…
We probe the conformal block structure of a scalar four-point function in $d\geq2$ conformal field theories by including higher-order derivative terms in a bulk gravitational action. We consider a heavy-light four-point function as the boundary correlator at large central charge. Such a four-point function can be computed, on the gravity side, as a two-point function of the light operator in a black hole geometry created by the heavy operator. We consider analytically solving the corresponding scalar field equation in a near-boundary expansion and find that the multi-stress tensor conformal bl…
We investigate the statistics of the number $N(R,S)$ of lattice points, $n\in \Z^2$, in a ``random'' annular domain $Π(R,w)=\,(R+w)A\,\setminus RA$, where $R,w >0$. Here $A$ is a fixed convex set with smooth boundary and $w$ is chosen so that the area of $Π(R,w)$ is $S$. The randomness comes from $R$ being taken as random ( with a smooth denisity ) in some interval $[c_1T,c_2T]$, $c_2>c_1>0$. We find that in the limit $T\to\infty $ the variance and distribution of $\De N=N(R;S)-S$ depends strongly on how $S$ grows with $T$. There is a saturation regime $S/T\to\infty$, as $T\to\infty$ in which …
We show that in 2d CFTs at large central charge, the coupling of the stress tensor to heavy operators can be re-absorbed by placing the CFT in a non-trivial background metric. This leads to a more precise computation of the Virasoro conformal blocks between heavy and light operators, which are shown to be equivalent to global conformal blocks evaluated in the new background. We also generalize to the case where the operators carry U(1) charges. The refined Virasoro blocks can be used as the seed for a new Virasoro block recursion relation expanded in the heavy-light limit. We comment on the im…
We investigate multi-field multicritical scalar theories using CFT constraints on two- and three-point functions combined with the Schwinger-Dyson equation. This is done in general and without assuming any symmetry for the models, which we just define to admit a Landau-Ginzburg description that includes the most general critical interactions built from monomials of the form $ϕ_{i_1} \cdots ϕ_{i_m}$. For all such models we analyze to the leading order of the $ε$-expansion the anomalous dimensions of the fields and those of the composite quadratic operators. For models with even $m$ we extend th…
