Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $ε$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $ε$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $ε$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{ΔY}{ΔZ}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. (abridged)
We present the orbital and physical parameters of the detached eclipsing binary V1200~Centauri (ASAS~J135218-3837.3) from the analysis of spectroscopic observations and light curves from the \textit{All Sky Automated Survey} (ASAS) and SuperWASP database. The radial velocities were computed from the high-resolution spectra obtained with the OUC 50-cm telescope and PUCHEROS spectrograph and with 1.2m Euler telescope and CORALIE spectrograph using the cross-correlation technique \textsc{todcor}. We found that the absolute parameters of the system are $M_1= 1.394\pm 0.030$ M$_\odot$, $M_2= 0.866\…
We present the discovery in Kepler's $K2$ mission observations and our follow-up radial velocity observations from Keck/HIRES for four eclipsing binary (EB) star systems in the young benchmark Pleiades cluster. Based on our modeling results, we announce two new low mass ($M_{tot} < 0.6 M_\odot$) EBs among Pleiades members (HCG 76 and MHO 9) and we report on two previously known Pleiades binaries that are also found to be EB systems (HII 2407 and HD 23642). We measured the masses of the binary HCG 76 to $\lesssim$2.5% precision, and the radii to $\lesssim$4.5% precision, which together with the…
Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to measure the fundamental properties of stars and probe their interiors. This is particularly efficient for red giants because their modes are well detectable and give information on their deep layers. However, the seismic relations used to infer the mass and radius of a star have been calibrated on the Sun. Therefore, it is crucial to assess their accuracy for red giants which are not perfectly homologous to it. We study eclipsing binaries with a giant component to test their validity. We identified 16 systems for which we intend to compare the dynamical m…
V471 Tau is a post-common-envelope binary consisting of an eclipsing DA white dwarf and a K-type main-sequence star in the Hyades star cluster. We analyzed publicly available photometry and spectroscopy of V471 Tau to revise the stellar and orbital parameters of the system. We used archival K2 photometry, archival Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopy, and published radial-velocity measurements of the K-type star. Employing Gaussian processes to fit for rotational modulation of the system flux by the main-sequence star, we recovered the transits of the white dwarf in front of the main-sequence s…
Context. This research paper contains light curve modelling, spectroscopy and detailed asteroseismic studies for four out of five in total semidetached eclipsing binaries with a delta Scuti component, that have been detected to date through Kepler mission, namely KIC 06669809, KIC 10581918, KIC 10619109 and KIC 11175495. Aims. The goal is to study the pulsational characteristics of the oscillating stars of the systems as well as to estimate their absolute parameters and enrich the so far poor sample of this kind of systems. Methods. Ground based spectroscopic observations provide the means to …
The empirical mass-luminosity relation in the Hyades cluster rests on dynamical mass determinations for five binary systems, of which one is eclipsing and the other four are visual or interferometric binaries. The last one was identified and first measured more than 20 years ago. Here we present dynamical mass measurements for a new binary system in the cluster, 80 Tau, which is also a visual pair with a much longer orbital period of about 170 yr. Although we lack the radial-velocity information that has enabled the individual mass determinations in all of the previous binaries, we show that i…
The internal structures and properties of oscillating red-giant stars can be accurately inferred through their global oscillation modes (asteroseismology). Based on 1460 days of Kepler observations we perform a thorough asteroseismic study to probe the stellar parameters and evolutionary stages of three red giants in eclipsing binary systems. We present the first detailed analysis of individual oscillation modes of the red-giant components of KIC 8410637, KIC5640750 and KIC9540226. We obtain estimates of their asteroseismic masses, radii, mean densities and logarithmic surface gravities by usi…
We report results from the TESS photometric data and new high-resolution spectra of the Algol system X Tri showing short-period pulsations. From the echelle spectra, the radial velocities of the eclipsing pair were measured, and the rotational rate and effective temperature of the primary star were obtained to be $v_1$$\sin$$i=84\pm6$ km s$^{-1}$ and $T_{\rm eff,1}=7900 \pm 110$ K, respectively. The synthetic modeling of these observations implies that X Tri is in synchronous rotation and is physically linked to a visual companion TIC 28391715 at a separation of about 6.5 arcsec. The absolute …
We present an up-to-date catalog of pulsating binaries, i.e. the binary and multiple stellar systems containing pulsating components, along with a statistics on them. Compared to the earlier compilation by Soydugan et al.(2006a) of 25 delta Scuti-type `oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binaries' (oEA), the recent collection of 74 oEA by Liakos et al.(2012), and the collection of Cepheids in binaries by Szabados (2003a), the numbers and types of pulsating variables in binaries are now extended. The total numbers of pulsating binary/multiple stellar systems have increased to be 515 as of 2014 Oct…
We have carried out an analysis of the HST STIS archival spectra of the magnetic white dwarf in the Hyades eclipsing-spectroscopic, post-common envelope binary V471 Tauri, time resolved on the orbit and on the X-ray rotational phase of the magnetic white dwarf. An HST STIS spectrum obtained during primary eclipse reveals a host of transition region/chromospheric emission features including N V (1238, 1242), Si IV (1393, 1402), C IV (1548, 1550) and He II (1640). The spectroscopic characteristics and emission line fluxes of the transition region/chromosphere of the very active, rapidly rotating…
We present the first evidence on the $δ$~Sct type pulsations of the primary components of three eclipsing binaries IQ CMa, AW Men and W Vol in the TESS field. A comprehensive investigation of the binary properties is conducted. The light curves of the systems are analysed and the frequency analyses are performed to residual data. The systems are compared to the binaries of the same morphological types, and the primaries are examined in contrast to the $δ$~Sct type pulsators. The results show that the systems are oscillating eclipsing Algol-type systems.
We present a new study of the Algol-type eclipsing binary system AS Eri based on the combination of the MOST and TESS light curves and a collection of very precise radial velocities obtained with the spectrographs HERMES operating at the Mercator telescope, La Palma, and TCES operating at the Alfred Jensch telescope, Tautenburg. The primary component is an A3 V-type pulsating, mass-accreting star. We fitted the light and velocity data with the package PHOEBE, and determined the best-fitting model adopting the configuration of a semi-detached system. The orbital period has been improved using a…
We present the results of a multi-site photometric campaign carried out in 2004-2008 for the Algol-type eclipsing binary system CT Her, the primary component of which shows Delta Scuti-type oscillations. Our data consist of differential light curves collected in the filters B and V which have been analysed using the method of Wilson-Devinney (PHOEBE). After identification of an adequate binary model and removal of the best-matching light curve solution, we performed a Fourier analysis of the residual B and V light curves to investigate the pulsational behaviour. We confirm the presence of rapi…

Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing, National Observatory of Athens(雅典国家天文台天文学、天体物理学、空间应用与遥感研究所);The University of Queensland(昆士兰大学);Astronomical Association of Queensland(昆士兰天文协会);Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University(恰纳卡莱18马月大学)
We present the first evidence for the pulsations of primary components of four eclipsing binary systems. The TESS light curves of the targets are analyzed, the light and the absolute parameters are derived. Fourier analyses are applied to the residual data subtracted from the binary models to reveal the pulsational characteristics of the primaries. The components of the systems are compared to well-known binary systems of the same morphological type. The types of pulsational classes for the primaries are also discussed. Results show that CPD-30 740 and V1637 Ori are oscillating eclipsing Algol…
As a test of rotationally-induced mixing causing the well-known Li dip in older mid-F dwarfs in the local Galactic disk, we utilize high-resolution and -S/N Keck/HIRESspectroscopy to measure the Li abundance in the components of the1 Gyr, [Fe/H]=-0.15 eclipsing short-period binary V505 Per. We find A(Li)=2.7+/-0.1 and 2.4+/-0.2 in the Teff=6500 and 6450 K primary and secondary components, respectively. Previous Teff determinations and uncertainties suggest that each component is located in the midst of the Li dip. If so, their A(Li) are >=2-5 times larger than A(Li) detections and upper limits…
Oscillating stars in binary systems are among the most interesting stellar laboratories, as these can provide information on the stellar parameters and stellar internal structures. Here we present a red giant with solar-like oscillations in an eclipsing binary observed with the NASA Kepler satellite. We compute stellar parameters of the red giant from spectra and the asteroseismic mass and radius from the oscillations. Although only one eclipse has been observed so far, we can already determine that the secondary is a main-sequence F star in an eccentric orbit with a semi-major axis larger tha…
The pulsating eclipsing binaries are remarkable systems that provide an opportunity to probe the stellar interior and to determine the fundamental stellar parameters precisely. Especially the detached eclipsing binary systems with (a) pulsating component(s) are significant objects to understand the nature of the oscillations since the binary effects in these systems are negligible. Recent studies based on space data have shown that the pulsation mechanisms of some oscillating stars are not completely understood. Hence, comprehensive studies of a number of pulsating stars within detached eclips…
The accuracy of stellar masses and radii determined from asteroseismology is not known! We examine this issue for giant stars by comparing classical measurements of detached eclipsing binary systems (dEBs) with asteroseismic measurements from the Kepler mission. For star clusters, we extrapolate measurements of dEBs in the turn-off region to the red giant branch and the red clump where we investigate the giants as an ensemble. For the field stars, we measure dEBs with an oscillating giant component. These measurements allow a comparison of masses and radii calculated from a classical eclipsing…

We present both binarity and pulsation of KIC 6220497 from the {\it Kepler} observations. The light curve synthesis shows that the eclipsing system is a semi-detached Algol with parameters of $q$ = 0.243$\pm$0.001, $i$ = 77.3$\pm$0.3 deg, and $ΔT$ = 3,372$\pm$58 K, in which the detached primary component fills its Roche lobe by $\sim$87\%. A multiple frequency analysis of the eclipse-subtracted light residuals reveals 33 frequencies in the range of 0.75$-$20.22 d$^{-1}$ with amplitudes between 0.27 and 4.56 mmag. Among these, four are pulsation frequencies in fundamental ($f_1$, $f_5$) and $p$…
We combine Kepler photometry with ground-based spectra to present a comprehensive dynamical model of the double red giant eclipsing binary KIC 9246715. While the two stars are very similar in mass (M1 = 2.171 [+0.006 / -0.008], M2 = 2.149 [+0.006 / -0.008] Msun) and radius (R1 = 8.37 [+0.03 / -0.07], R2 = 8.30 [+0.04 / -0.03] Rsun), an asteroseismic analysis finds one main set of solar-like oscillations with unusually low-amplitude, wide modes. A second set of oscillations from the other star may exist, but this marginal detection is extremely faint. Because the two stars are nearly twins, KIC…
Oscillating red-giant stars in binary systems are an ideal testbed for investigating the structure and evolution of stars in the advanced phases of evolution. With 83 known red giants in binary systems, of which only ~40 have determined global seismic parameters and orbital parameters, the sample is small compared to the numerous known oscillating stars. The detection of red-giant binary systems is typically obtained from the signature of stellar binarity in space photometry. The time base of such data biases the detection towards systems with shorter periods and orbits of insufficient size to…
KIC 7955301 is a hierarchical triple system with eclipse timing and depth variations discovered by the Kepler mission. It is composed of a non-eclipsing primary star at the bottom of the red giant branch on a 209-day orbit with a K/G-type main-sequence inner eclipsing binary, orbiting in 15.3 days. This system was noted for the large amplitude of its eclipse timing variations (4 hours), and the clear solar-like oscillations of the red-giant component, including p-modes of degree up to l=3 and mixed l=1 modes. The system is a single-lined spectroscopic triple. We perform a dynamical model by co…
We present the characterization of KIC 4142768, an eclipsing binary with two evolved A-type stars in an eccentric orbit with a period of 14 days. We measure the fundamental parameters of the two components ($M_1=2.05M_{\odot}, R_1=2.96R_{\odot}$ and $M_2=2.05M_{\odot}, R_2=2.51R_{\odot}$) by combining {\it Kepler} photometry and spectra from {\it Keck} HIRES. The measured surface rotation rates are only one-fifth of the pseudo-synchronous rate of the eccentric orbit. Fourier spectrum of the light curve reveals hybrid pulsations of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus type, with pulsation frequencies at a…
Oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binaries (oEA) are very interesting objects that have three observational features of eclipse, pulsation, and mass transfer. Direct measurement of their masses and radii from the double-lined radial velocity data and photometric light curves would be the most essential for understanding their evolutionary process and for performing the asteroseismological study. We present the physical properties of the oEA star XX Cep from high-resolution time-series spectroscopic data. The effective temperature of the primary star was determined to be 7,946 $\pm$ 240 K by com…
This work presents an extensive analysis of the properties of three southern semi-detached eclipsing binaries hosting a pulsating component, namely HM Pup, V632 Sco, and TT Vel. Systematic multi-filtered photometric observations were obtained using telescopes located in Australia and Chile mostly between 2018-2021. These observations were combined with data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission for a detailed analysis of pulsations. Spectral types and radial velocities were determined from spectra obtained with the Australian National University's 2.3 m telescope and Wi…
OO Dra is a short-period Algol system with a $δ$ Sct-like pulsator. We obtained time-series spectra between 2016 February and May to derive the fundamental parameters of the binary star and to study its evolutionary scenario. The radial velocity (RV) curves for both components were presented, and the effective temperature of the hotter and more massive primary was determined to be $T_{\rm eff,1}$ = 8260 $\pm$ 210 K by comparing the disentangling spectrum and the Kurucz models. Our RV measurements were solved with the $BV$ light curves of Zhang et al. (2014) using the Wilson-Devinney binary cod…
Observations of stellar clusters have had a tremendous impact in forming our understanding of stellar evolution. The open cluster M67 has a particularly important role as a calibration benchmark for stellar evolution theory due to its near solar composition and age. As a result, it has been observed extensively, including attempts to detect solar-like oscillations in its main sequence and red giant stars. However, any asteroseismic inference has so far remained elusive due to the difficulty in measuring these extremely low amplitude oscillations. Here we report the first unambiguous detection …
Constraining stellar and orbital co-evolution through ensemble seismology of solar-like oscillators in binary systems -- A census of oscillating red-giants and main-sequence stars in Gaia DR3 binaries
Asteroseismic scaling relations can provide high-precision measurements of mass and radius for red giant (RG) stars displaying solar-like oscillations. Their accuracy can be validated and potentially improved using independent and accurate observations of mass, radius, effective temperature and metallicity. We seek to achieve this using long period SB2 eclipsing binaries hosting oscillating RGs. We explore KIC 8430105, for which a previous study found significant asteroseismic overestimation of mass and radius when compared with eclipsing binary measurements. We measured dynamical masses and r…
Eclipsing binary stars with an oscillating giant component allow accurate stellar parameters to be derived and asteroseismic methods to be tested and calibrated. To this aim, suitable systems need to be firstly identified and secondly measured precisely and accurately. KIC 4054905 is one such system, which has been identified, but with measurements of a relatively low precision and with some confusion regarding its parameters and evolutionary state. Our aim is to provide a detailed and precise characterisation of the system and to test asteroseismic scaling relations. Dynamical and asteroseism…
The present work concerns the Asteroseismology of the Kepler detached eclipsing binary KIC 8504570. Particularly, it focuses on the pulsational behaviour of the oscillating component of this system and the estimation of its physical parameters in order to enrich the so far poor sample of this kind of systems. Using spectroscopic observations, the spectral type of the primary component was determined and used to create accurate light curves models and estimate its absolute parameters. The light curve residuals were subsequently analysed using Fourier transformation techniques to obtain the puls…
We extend our effort to calibrate stellar isochrones in the Johnson-Cousins ($BVI_C$) and the 2MASS ($JHK_s$) filter systems based on observations of well-studied open clusters. Using cool main-sequence (MS) stars in Praesepe, we define empirical corrections to the Lejeune et al. color-effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) relations down to $T_{\rm eff} \sim 3600$ K, complementing our previous work based on the Hyades and the Pleiades. We apply empirically corrected isochrones to existing optical and near-infrared photometry of cool ($T_{\rm eff} \leq 5500$ K) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]$=+0.37$) M…
