We consider the self-adjoint two-dimensional Schrödinger operator $H_μ$ associated with the differential expression $-Δ-μ$ describing a particle exposed to an attractive interaction given by a measure $μ$ supported in a closed curvilinear strip and having fixed transversal one-dimensional profile measure $μ_\bot$. This operator has nonempty negative discrete spectrum and we obtain two optimization results for its lowest eigenvalue. For the first one, we fix $μ_\bot$ and maximize the lowest eigenvalue with respect to shape of the curvilinear strip the optimizer in the first problem turns out to be the annulus. We also generalize this result to the situation which involves an additional perturbation of $H_μ$ in the form of a positive multiple of the characteristic function of the domain surrounded by the curvilinear strip. Secondly, we fix the shape of the curvilinear strip and minimize the lowest eigenvalue with respect to variation of $μ_\bot$, under the constraint that the total profile measure $α>0$ is fixed. The optimizer in this problem is $μ_\bot$ given by the product of $α$ and the Dirac $δ$-function supported at an optimal position.
In this paper we consider a Robin-type Laplace operator on bounded domains. We study the dependence of its lowest eigenvalue on the boundary conditions and its asymptotic behavior in shrinking and expanding domains. For convex domains we establish two-sided estimates on the lowest eigenvalues in terms of the inradius and of the boundary conditions.
The eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian on bounded, planar, convex domains with mixed boundary conditions is considered, where a Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on its complement. Given two different such choices of boundary conditions for the same domain, we prove inequalities between their lowest eigenvalues. As a special case, we prove parts of a conjecture on the order of mixed eigenvalues of triangles.
We prove various estimates for the first eigenvalue of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded domain in two dimensions. When the magnetic field is constant, we give lower and upper bounds in terms of geometric quantities of the domain. We furthermore prove a lower bound for the first magnetic Neumann eigenvalue in the case of constant field.
There is a family of potentials that minimize the lowest eigenvalue of a Schrödinger eigenvalue under the constraint of a given L^p norm of the potential. We give effective estimates for the amount by which the eigenvalue increases when the potential is not one of these optimal potentials. Our results are analogous to those for the isoperimetric problem and the Sobolev inequality. We also prove a stability estimate for Hölder's inequality, which we believe to be new.
We consider the problem of geometric optimization for the lowest eigenvalue of the two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with an attractive $δ$-interaction of a fixed strength, the support of which is a star graph with finitely many edges of an equal length $L \in (0,\infty]$. Under the constraint of fixed number of the edges and fixed length of them, we prove that the lowest eigenvalue is maximized by the fully symmetric star graph. The proof relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle, properties of the Macdonald function, and on a geometric inequality for polygons circumscribed into the unit ci…
The lowest eigenvalue of non-commutative harmonic oscillators $Q$ is studied. It is shown that $Q$ can be decomposed into four self-adjoint operators, and all the eigenvalues of each operator are simple. We show that the lowest eigenvalue $E$ of $Q$ is simple. Furthermore a Jacobi matrix representation of $Q$ is given and spectrum of $Q$ is considered numerically.
We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact planar set, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. Under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, we show that the maximiser within the class of exteriors of convex sets is always the exterior of a disk. We also argue why the results fail without the convexity constraint and in higher dimensions.
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
In this note we consider a one-dimensional quantum mechanical particle constrained by a parabolic well perturbed by a Gaussian potential. As the related Birman-Schwinger operator is trace class, the Fredholm determinant can be exploited in order to compute the modified eigenenergies which differ from those of the harmonic oscillator due to the presence of the Gaussian perturbation. By taking advantage of Wang's results on scalar products of four eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, it is possible to evaluate quite accurately the two lowest-lying eigenvalues as functions of the coupling c…
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact set in any dimension, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. As an improvement upon our previous work (arXiv:1608.04896, to appear in J. Convex Anal.), we show that under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, the maximiser within the class of exteriors of simply connected planar sets is always the exterior of a disk, without the need of convexity assumption. Moreover, we generalise the result to disconnected compact planar sets. Namely, we prove that unde…
We present two complementary methods, each applicable in a different range, to evaluate the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of random matrices in a Jacobi ensemble. The first method solves an associated Painleve VI nonlinear differential equation numerically, with suitable initial conditions that we determine. The second method proceeds via constructing the power-series expansion of the Painleve VI function. Our results are applied in a forthcoming paper in which we model the distribution of the first zero above the central point of elliptic curve L-function families of finite conductor …
We consider the problem of geometric optimization of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplacian on a compact, simply-connected two-dimensional manifold with boundary subject to an attractive Robin boundary condition. We prove that in the sub-class of manifolds with the Gauss curvature bounded from above by a constant $K_\circ \ge 0$ and under the constraint of fixed perimeter, the geodesic disk of constant curvature $K_\circ$ maximizes the lowest Robin eigenvalue. In the same geometric setting, it is proved that the spectral isoperimetric inequality holds for the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichle…
We analyze Schrödinger operators whose potential is given by a singular interaction supported on a sub-manifold of the ambient space. Under the assumption that the operator has at least two eigenvalues below its essential spectrum we derive estimates on the lowest spectral gap. In the case where the sub-manifold is a finite curve in two dimensional Euclidean space the size of the gap depends only on the following parameters: the length, diameter and maximal curvature of the curve, a certain parameter measuring the injectivity of the curve embedding, and a compact sub-interval of the open, nega…
The solution of the eigenvalue problem of the Laplacian on a general homogeneous space G/H is given. Here, G is a compact, semisimple Lie group, H is a closed subgroup of G, and the rank of H is equal to the rank of G. It is shown that the multiplicity of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian on G/H is just the degeneracy of the lowest Landau level for a particle moving on G/H in the presence of the background gauge field. Moreover, the eigenspace of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian on G/H is, up to a sign, equal to the G-equivariant index of the Dirac operator of Kostant on G/H.
We study the minimizers of the sum of the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of the negative Laplacian and the perimeter with respect to a general norm in the class of Jordan domains in the plane. This is equivalent (modulo scaling) to minimizing the said eigenvalue (or the base frequency of a drum of this shape) subject to a hard constraint on the perimeter. We show that, for all norms, a minimizer exists, is unique up to spatial translations and is convex but not necessarily smooth. We give conditions on the norm that characterize the appearance of facets and corners. We also demonstrate that ne…
We consider the problem of geometric optimization for the lowest eigenvalue of the two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with an attractive $δ'$-interaction of a fixed strength, the support of which is a $C^2$-smooth contour. Under the constraint of a fixed length of the contour, we prove that the lowest eigenvalue is maximized by the circle. The proof relies on the min-max principle and the method of parallel coordinates.
We analyze the eigenvalue density for the Laguerre and Jacobi $β$-ensembles in the cases that the corresponding exponents are extensive. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic expansion up to terms $o(1)$, in the large deviation regime outside the limiting interval of support. As found in recent studies of the large deviation density for the Gaussian $β$-ensemble, and Laguerre $β$-ensemble with fixed exponent, there is a scaling from this asymptotic expansion to the right tail asymptotics for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue at the soft edge.
The density function for the joint distribution of the first and second eigenvalues at the soft edge of unitary ensembles is found in terms of a Painlevé II transcendent and its associated isomonodromic system. As a corollary, the density function for the spacing between these two eigenvalues is similarly characterized. The particular solution of Painlevé II that arises is a double shifted Bäcklund transformation of the Hasting-McLeod solution, which applies in the case of the distribution of the largest eigenvalue at the soft edge. Our deductions are made by employing the hard-to-soft edge tra…
For a gaussian interaction V(x,y)=λe^{-(x^2+y^2)/r^2} with long range r>>l_B, l_B the magnetic length, we rigorously prove that the eigenvalues of the finite volume Hamiltonian H_{N,LL}=P_{LL} H_N P_{LL}, H_N=\sum_{i=1}^N [-i\hbar \nabla_{x_i}-eA(x_i)]^2+\sum_{i,j; i\ne j} V(x_i-x_j), \rotA=(0,0,B), and P_{LL} the projection onto the lowest Landau level, are given by the following set: Let M be the number of flux quanta flowing through the sample such that ν=N/M is the filling factor. Then each eigenvalue is given by E=E(n_1,...,n_N)=\sum_{i,j=1;i\ne j}^N W(n_i-n_j). Here n_i\in {1,2,...,M}, n…
We investigate the robustness of singularity avoidance mechanisms in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics on the discretised real line when lattice points are allowed to approach a singularity of the classical potential. We consider the attractive Coulomb potential and the attractive scale invariant potential, on an equispaced parity-noninvariant lattice and on a non-equispaced parity-invariant lattice, and we examine the energy eigenvalues by a combination of analytic and numerical techniques. While the lowest one or two eigenvalues descend to negative infinity in the singular limit, we find tha…
The aim of this paper is to establish estimates of the lowest eigenvalue of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+B\textbf{A})^2$ on an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ $Ω$ with smooth boundary as $B$ tends to infinity. We introduce a "magnetic" curvature mixing the curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the normal derivative of the magnetic field and obtain an estimate analogous with the one of constant case. Actually, we give a precise estimate of the lowest eigenvalue in the case where the restriction of magnetic field to the boundary admits a unique minimum which is non degenerate. We also give …
In this paper we give a detailed asymptotic formula for the lowest eigenvalue of the magnetic Neumann Schrödinger operator in the ball in three dimensions with constant magnetic field, as the strength of the magnetic field tends to infinity. This asymptotic formula is used to prove that the eigenvalue is monotonically increasing for large values of the magnetic field.
We characterize the phenomenon of "crowding" near the largest eigenvalue $λ_{\max}$ of random $N \times N$ matrices belonging to the Gaussian $β$-ensemble of random matrix theory, including in particular the Gaussian orthogonal ($β=1$), unitary ($β=2$) and symplectic ($β= 4$) ensembles. We focus on two distinct quantities: (i) the density of states (DOS) near $λ_{\max}$, $ρ_{\rm DOS}(r,N)$, which is the average density of eigenvalues located at a distance $r$ from $λ_{\max}$ (or the density of eigenvalues seen from $λ_{\max}$) and (ii) the probability density function of the gap between the fi…
We consider a particle bound to a two-dimensional plane and a double well potential, subject to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field . The energy difference between the lowest two eigenvalues--the eigenvalue splitting--is related to the tunneling probability between the two wells. We obtain upper and lower bounds on this splitting in the regime where both the magnetic field strength and the depth of the wells are large. The main step is a lower bound on the hopping probability between the wells, a key parameter in tight binding models of solid state physics.
We investigate the two well-known ground states of rings of $N$ classical magnetic dipoles that are given by clockwise or anti-clockwise spin orientations tangent to the circle encompassing the dipole ring. In particular, we formulate a rigorous proof of the ground state property of the states in question. The problem can be reduced to the determination of the lowest eigenvalue of a $3N\times 3N$ matrix ${\mathbf J}$. We show that all eigenvalues of ${\mathbf J}$ can be analytically calculated and, at least for $N=3,\ldots,8$, the lowest one can be directly determined. The main part of the pap…
We study the probability that all the eigenvalues of $n\times n$ Hermitian matrices, from the Laguerre unitary ensemble with the weight $x^γ\mathrm{e}^{-4nx},\;x\in[0,\infty),\;γ>-1$, lie in the interval $[0,α]$. By using previous results for finite $n$ obtained by the ladder operator approach of orthogonal polynomials, we derive the large $n$ asymptotics of the largest eigenvalue distribution function with $α$ ranging from 0 to the soft edge. In addition, at the soft edge, we compute the constant conjectured by Tracy and Widom [Commun. Math. Phys. 159 (1994), 151-174], later proved by Deift, …
We propose a quantum algorithm to obtain the lowest eigenstate of any Hamiltonian simulated by a quantum computer. The proposed algorithm begins with an arbitrary initial state of the simulated system. A finite series of transforms is iteratively applied to the initial state assisted with an ancillary qubit. The fraction of the lowest eigenstate in the initial state is then amplified up to $\simeq 1$. We prove that our algorithm can faithfully work for any arbitrary Hamiltonian in the theoretical analysis. Numerical analyses are also carried out. We firstly provide a numerical proof-of-princip…
We study the low-lying spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a randomly wiggled strip. More precisely, our results are formulated in terms of the eigenvalues of finite segment approximations of the infinite waveguide. Under appropriate weak-disorder assumptions we obtain deterministic and probabilistic bounds on the position of the lowest eigenvalue. A Combes-Thomas argument allows us to obtain so-called 'initial length scale decay estimates' at they are used in the proof of spectral localization using the multiscale analysis.
We consider Hermite and Laguerre $β$-ensembles of large $N\times N$ random matrices. For all $β$ even, corrections to the limiting global density are obtained, and the limiting density at the soft edge is evaluated. We use the saddle point method on multidimensional integral representations of the density which are based on special realizations of the generalized (multivariate) classical orthogonal polynomials. The corrections to the bulk density are oscillatory terms that depends on $β$. At the edges, the density can be expressed as a multiple integral of the Konstevich type which constitutes…
The $β$ ensembles are a class of eigenvalue probability densities which generalise the invariant ensembles of classical random matrix theory. In the case of the Gaussian and Laguerre weights, the corresponding eigenvalue densities are known in terms of certain $β$ dimensional integrals. We study the large $N$ asymptotics of the density with a soft edge scaling. In the Laguerre case, this is done with both the parameter $a$ fixed, and with $a$ proportional to $N$. It is found in all these cases that by appropriately centring the scaled variable, the leading correction term to the limiting densi…
