In this work, we present the Senbiosys blood pressure monitoring algorithm (SB-BPM) that solely requires a photoplethysmography (PPG) signal. The technology is based on pulse wave analysis (PWA) of PPG signals retrieved from different body locations to continuously estimate the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and the diastolic blood pressure (DBP).
Background and Objectives: In a significant portion of surgeries, blood pressure (BP) is often measured non-invasively in an intermittent manner. This practice has a risk of missing clinically relevant BP changes between two adjacent intermittent BP measurements. This study proposes a method to non-invasively estimate systolic blood pressure (SBP) with high accuracy in patients undergoing surgery. Methods: Continuous arterial BP, electrocardiography (ECG), and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals were acquired from 29 patients undergoing surgery. After extracting 9 features from the PPG and ECG …
Objective: Evaluate a method for the estimation of the nocturnal systolic blood pressure (SBP) dip from 24-hour blood pressure trends using a wrist-worn photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and a deep neural network in free-living individuals, comparing the deep neural network to traditional machine learning and non-machine learning baselines. Approach: A wrist-worn PPG sensor was worn by 106 healthy individuals for 226 days during which 5111 reference values for blood pressure (BP) were obtained with a 24-hour ambulatory BP monitor and matched with the PPG sensor data. Features based on heart ra…
We develop an algorithm that accurately detects Atrial Fibrillation (AF) episodes from photoplethysmograms (PPG) recorded in ambulatory free-living conditions. We collect and annotate a dataset containing more than 4000 hours of PPG recorded from a wrist-worn device. Using a 50-layer convolutional neural network, we achieve a test AUC of 95% and show robustness to motion artifacts inherent to PPG signals. Continuous and accurate detection of AF from PPG has the potential to transform consumer wearable devices into clinically useful medical monitoring tools.
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a method of detecting variation in blood volume commonly through contact with the skin and involving the usage of one or multiple sensors. PPG is typically used in health-related fields and one of its most popular uses is heart rate monitoring. Recent developments in technology have introduced wearable smart devices that can detect PPG signals. These devices mostly rely on signals that are detected at a single location, indicating that such devices require the signal waveform to be immensely reliable. In further detail, the properties of the blood circulation syst…
In this paper we present an acquisition chain for the measurement of blood arterial pressure based on the oscillometric method. This method does not suffer from any limitation as the well-known auscultatory method and it is suited for wearable health monitoring systems. The device uses a pressure sensor whose signal is filtered, digitalized and analyzed by a microcontroller. Local analysis allows the evaluation of the systolic and diastolic pressure values which can be used for local alarms, data collection and remote monitoring.
To perform precision medicine in realtime at home, a device capable of long distance continuously monitoring target biomolecules in unprocessed blood under dynamic situations is essential. In this study, an integrative buffer free wireless device is developed to measure drug concentrations in patients blood in real time for remote clinical healthcare. To demonstrate its capability, the drug molecules (i.e., small molecule drug doxorubicin, DOX) are continuously measured in the unprocessed whole blood of live animals (e.g., rats). The dynamic changes of drug concentrations with sub minute tempo…
Blood damage (hemolysis) can occur during clinical procedures, e.g. dialysis, due to human error or faulty equipment, and it can cause significant harm to the patient or even death. We propose a simple technique to monitor changes in hemolysis levels accurately, continuously, and in real time. As red blood cells rupture, the overall conductivity of the blood increases. Here, we demonstrate that small changes in porcine blood hemolysis can be detected accurately through a simple resistance measurement.
A device based on Polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography is developed to monitor blood glucose levels in human subjects. The device was initially tested with tissue phantom. The measurements with human subjects for various glucose concentration levels are found to be linearly dependent on the degree of circular polarization obtainable from the PS-OCT.
Background: A smartphone is a promising tool for daily cardiovascular measurement and mental stress monitoring. A smartphone camera-based PhotoPlethysmoGraphy (PPG) and a low-cost thermal camera can be used to create cheap, convenient and mobile monitoring systems. However, to ensure reliable monitoring results, a person has to remain still for several minutes while a measurement is being taken. This is very cumbersome and makes its use in real-life mobile situations quite impractical. Objective: We propose a system which combines PPG and thermography with the aim of improving cardiovascular s…

Diabetes mellitus is a complex group of syndromes that have in common a disturbance in the body's use of glucose, resulting in an elevated blood sugar. Once detected, sugar diabetes can be controlled by an appropriate regimen that should include diet therapy, a weight reduction program for those persons who are overweight, a program of exercise and insulin injections or oral drugs to lower blood glucose. Blood glucose monitoring by the patient and the physician is an important aspect in the control of the devastating complications (heart disease, blindness, kidney failure or amputations) due t…
In this paper we present an electronic system to perform a non-invasive measurement of the blood pressure based on the oscillometric method, which does not suffer from the limitations of the well-known auscultatory one. Moreover the proposed system is able to evaluate both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure values and makes use of a microcontroller and a Sallen-Key active filter. With reference to other similar devices, a great improvement of our measurement system is achieved since it performs the transmission of the systolic and diastolic pressure values to a remote computer. This asp…
This paper is written in the context of the international Eurostars project, i-bracelet. The main objective of the i-bracelet project - "Intelligent bracelet for blood pressure monitoring and detection of preeclampsia" is the creation of a portable medical device for uninterrupted monitoring of blood pressure and to detect the blood pressure problems (such as hypertension) and, in particular, preeclampsia. In the current paper is described the software component of this system used for monitoring, viewing and analyzing the blood pressure values coming from a smart bracelet developed in the con…
Diabetes is a chronicle disease where the body of a human is irregular to dissolve the blood glucose properly. The diabetes is due to lack of insulin in human body. The continuous monitoring of blood glucose is main important aspect for health care. Most of the successful glucose monitoring devices is based on methodology of pricking of blood. However, such kind of approach may not be advisable for frequent measurement. The paper presents the extensive review of glucose measurement techniques. The paper covers various non-invasive glucose methods and its control with smart healthcare technolog…
Infrared light scattering methods have been developed and employed to non-invasively monitor human cerebral blood flow (CBF). However, the number of reflected photons that interact with the brain is low when detecting blood flow in deep tissue. To tackle this photon-starved problem, we present and demonstrate the idea of interferometric speckle visibility spectroscopy (ISVS). In ISVS, an interferometric detection scheme is used to boost the weak signal light. The blood flow dynamics are inferred from the speckle statistics of a single frame speckle pattern. We experimentally demonstrated the i…
