This article explores a face recognition alternative which seeks to contribute to resolve current security vulnerabilities in most recognition architectures. Current low cost facial authentication software in the market can be fooled by a printed picture of a face due to the lack of depth information. The presented software creates a depth map of the face with the help of a stereo setup, offering a higher level of security than traditional recognition programs. Analysis of the person's identity and facial depth map are processed through deep convolutional neural networks, providing a secure low cost real-time face authentication method.
This paper proposes a novel approach for extending monocular visual odometry to a stereo camera system. The proposed method uses an additional camera to accurately estimate and optimize the scale of the monocular visual odometry, rather than triangulating 3D points from stereo matching. Specifically, the 3D points generated by the monocular visual odometry are projected onto the other camera of the stereo pair, and the scale is recovered and optimized by directly minimizing the photometric error. It is computationally efficient, adding minimal overhead to the stereo vision system compared to s…

This work proposes an end-to-end approach to estimate full 3D hand pose from stereo cameras. Most existing methods of estimating hand pose from stereo cameras apply stereo matching to obtain depth map and use depth-based solution to estimate hand pose. In contrast, we propose to bypass the stereo matching and directly estimate the 3D hand pose from the stereo image pairs. The proposed neural network architecture extends from any keypoint predictor to estimate the sparse disparity of the hand joints. In order to effectively train the model, we propose a large scale synthetic dataset that is com…
We propose Stereo Direct Sparse Odometry (Stereo DSO) as a novel method for highly accurate real-time visual odometry estimation of large-scale environments from stereo cameras. It jointly optimizes for all the model parameters within the active window, including the intrinsic/extrinsic camera parameters of all keyframes and the depth values of all selected pixels. In particular, we propose a novel approach to integrate constraints from static stereo into the bundle adjustment pipeline of temporal multi-view stereo. Real-time optimization is realized by sampling pixels uniformly from image reg…
In this paper, we present a novel linear algorithm to estimate the 6 DoF relative pose from consecutive frames of stereo rolling shutter (RS) cameras. Our method is derived based on the assumption that stereo cameras undergo motion with constant velocity around the center of the baseline, which needs 9 pairs of correspondences on both left and right consecutive frames. The stereo RS images enable the recovery of depth maps from the semi-global matching (SGM) algorithm. With the estimated camera motion and depth map, we can correct the RS images to get the undistorted images without any scene s…

Stereo camera systems play an important role in robotics applications to perceive the 3D world. However, conventional cameras have drawbacks such as low dynamic range, motion blur and latency due to the underlying frame-based mechanism. Event cameras address these limitations as they report the brightness changes of each pixel independently with a fine temporal resolution, but they are unable to acquire absolute intensity information directly. Although integrated hybrid event-frame sensors (eg., DAVIS) are available, the quality of data is compromised by coupling at the pixel level in the circ…

We present a new dataset to evaluate monocular, stereo, and plenoptic camera based visual odometry algorithms. The dataset comprises a set of synchronized image sequences recorded by a micro lens array (MLA) based plenoptic camera and a stereo camera system. For this, the stereo cameras and the plenoptic camera were assembled on a common hand-held platform. All sequences are recorded in a very large loop, where beginning and end show the same scene. Therefore, the tracking accuracy of a visual odometry algorithm can be measured from the drift between beginning and end of the sequence. For both…

In this paper, we present TEScalib, a novel extrinsic self-calibration approach of LiDAR and stereo camera using the geometric and photometric information of surrounding environments without any calibration targets for automated driving vehicles. Since LiDAR and stereo camera are widely used for sensor data fusion on automated driving vehicles, their extrinsic calibration is highly important. However, most of the LiDAR and stereo camera calibration approaches are mainly target-based and therefore time consuming. Even the newly developed targetless approaches in last years are either inaccurate…
Although the number of camera-based sensors mounted on vehicles has recently increased dramatically, robust and accurate object velocity detection is difficult. Additionally, it is still common to use radar as a fusion system. We have developed a method to accurately detect the velocity of object using a camera, based on a large-scale dataset collected over 20 years by the automotive manufacturer, SUBARU. The proposed method consists of three methods: an High Dynamic Range (HDR) detection method that fuses multiple stereo disparity images, a fusion method that combines the results of monocular…
We introduce DROID-SLAM, a new deep learning based SLAM system. DROID-SLAM consists of recurrent iterative updates of camera pose and pixelwise depth through a Dense Bundle Adjustment layer. DROID-SLAM is accurate, achieving large improvements over prior work, and robust, suffering from substantially fewer catastrophic failures. Despite training on monocular video, it can leverage stereo or RGB-D video to achieve improved performance at test time. The URL to our open source code is https://github.com/princeton-vl/DROID-SLAM.
Depth maps obtained from commercially available structured-light stereo based depth cameras, such as the Kinect, are easy to use but are affected by significant amounts of noise. This paper is devoted to a study of the intrinsic noise characteristics of such depth maps, i.e. the standard deviation of noise in estimated depth varies quadratically with the distance of the object from the depth camera. We validate this theoretical model against empirical observations and demonstrate the utility of this noise model in three popular applications: depth map denoising, volumetric scan merging for 3D …
We propose DiffuStereo, a novel system using only sparse cameras (8 in this work) for high-quality 3D human reconstruction. At its core is a novel diffusion-based stereo module, which introduces diffusion models, a type of powerful generative models, into the iterative stereo matching network. To this end, we design a new diffusion kernel and additional stereo constraints to facilitate stereo matching and depth estimation in the network. We further present a multi-level stereo network architecture to handle high-resolution (up to 4k) inputs without requiring unaffordable memory footprint. Give…

High-speed, high-resolution stereoscopic (H2-Stereo) video allows us to perceive dynamic 3D content at fine granularity. The acquisition of H2-Stereo video, however, remains challenging with commodity cameras. Existing spatial super-resolution or temporal frame interpolation methods provide compromised solutions that lack temporal or spatial details, respectively. To alleviate this problem, we propose a dual camera system, in which one camera captures high-spatial-resolution low-frame-rate (HSR-LFR) videos with rich spatial details, and the other captures low-spatial-resolution high-frame-rate…

We address the problem of optical decalibration in mobile stereo camera setups, especially in context of autonomous vehicles. In real world conditions, an optical system is subject to various sources of anticipated and unanticipated mechanical stress (vibration, rough handling, collisions). Mechanical stress changes the geometry between the cameras that make up the stereo pair, and as a consequence, the pre-calculated epipolar geometry is no longer valid. Our method is based on optimization of camera geometry parameters and plugs directly into the output of the stereo matching algorithm. There…
We propose a novel 3D human pose detector using two panoramic cameras. We show that transforming fisheye perspectives to rectilinear views allows a direct application of two-dimensional deep-learning pose estimation methods, without the explicit need for a costly re-training step to compensate for fisheye image distortions. By utilizing panoramic cameras, our method is capable of accurately estimating human poses over a large field of view. This renders our method suitable for ergonomic analyses and other pose based assessments.
In this paper we present a novel method for obstacle avoidance using the stereo camera. The conventional obstacle avoidance methods and their limitations are discussed. A new algorithm is developed for the real-time obstacle avoidance which responds faster to unexpected obstacles. In this approach the depth map is divided into optimized number of regions and the minimum depth at each section is assigned as the depth of that region. A fuzzy controller is designed to create the drive commands for the robot/quadcopter. The system was tested on multiple paths with different obstacles and the resul…
In this work, we present a camera configuration for acquiring "stereoscopic dark flash" images: a simultaneous stereo pair in which one camera is a conventional RGB sensor, but the other camera is sensitive to near-infrared and near-ultraviolet instead of R and B. When paired with a "dark" flash (i.e., one having near-infrared and near-ultraviolet light, but no visible light) this camera allows us to capture the two images in a flash/no-flash image pair at the same time, all while not disturbing any human subjects or onlookers with a dazzling visible flash. We present a hardware prototype of t…

It is well known that the passive stereo system cannot adapt well to weak texture objects, e.g., white walls. However, these weak texture targets are very common in indoor environments. In this paper, we present a novel stereo system, which consists of two cameras (an RGB camera and an IR camera) and an IR speckle projector. The RGB camera is used both for depth estimation and texture acquisition. The IR camera and the speckle projector can form a monocular structured-light (MSL) subsystem, while the two cameras can form a binocular stereo subsystem. The adapter presents a practical and low-cost solution for enabling any smartphone to be used as a stereo camera, which is currently only possible using high-end phones with expensive 3D sensors. Using the prototype version of the adapter, we experiment with parameters like the angles between cameras and mirrors and the distance to each camera (the stereo baseline). We find the most convenient configuration and calibrate the stereo pair. Based on the presented preliminary analy…
Computational stereo has reached a high level of accuracy, but degrades in the presence of occlusions, repeated textures, and correspondence errors along edges. We present a novel approach based on neural networks for depth estimation that combines stereo from dual cameras with stereo from a dual-pixel sensor, which is increasingly common on consumer cameras. Our network uses a novel architecture to fuse these two sources of information and can overcome the above-mentioned limitations of pure binocular stereo matching. Our method provides a dense depth map with sharp edges, which is crucial fo…

This paper proposes a novel method of estimating the absolute scale of monocular SfM for a multi-modal stereo camera. In the fields of computer vision and robotics, scale estimation for monocular SfM has been widely investigated in order to simplify systems. This paper addresses the scale estimation problem for a stereo camera system in which two cameras capture different spectral images (e.g., RGB and FIR), whose feature points are difficult to directly match using descriptors. Furthermore, the number of matching points between FIR images can be comparatively small, owing to the low resolutio…
We present a method for decomposing the 3D scene flow observed from a moving stereo rig into stationary scene elements and dynamic object motion. Our unsupervised learning framework jointly reasons about the camera motion, optical flow, and 3D motion of moving objects. Three cooperating networks predict stereo matching, camera motion, and residual flow, which represents the flow component due to object motion and not from camera motion. Based on rigid projective geometry, the estimated stereo depth is used to guide the camera motion estimation, and the depth and camera motion are used to guide…
High-accuracy per-pixel depth is vital for computational photography, so smartphones now have multimodal camera systems with time-of-flight (ToF) depth sensors and multiple color cameras. However, producing accurate high-resolution depth is still challenging due to the low resolution and limited active illumination power of ToF sensors. Fusing RGB stereo and ToF information is a promising direction to overcome these issues, but a key problem remains: to provide high-quality 2D RGB images, the main color sensor's lens is optically stabilized, resulting in an unknown pose for the floating lens t…

In this paper we address the problem of multiple camera calibration in the presence of a homogeneous scene, and without the possibility of employing calibration object based methods. The proposed solution exploits salient features present in a larger field of view, but instead of employing active vision we replace the cameras with stereo rigs featuring a long focal analysis camera, as well as a short focal registration camera. Thus, we are able to propose an accurate solution which does not require intrinsic variation models as in the case of zooming cameras. Moreover, the availability of the …

Multi-spectral sensors consisting of a standard (visible-light) camera and a long-wave infrared camera can simultaneously provide both visible and thermal images. Since thermal images are independent from environmental illumination, they can help to overcome certain limitations of standard cameras under complicated illumination conditions. However, due to the difference in the information source of the two types of cameras, their images usually share very low texture similarity. Hence, traditional texture-based feature matching methods cannot be directly applied to obtain stereo correspondence…
The combination of range sensors with color cameras can be very useful for robot navigation, semantic perception, manipulation, and telepresence. Several methods of combining range- and color-data have been investigated and successfully used in various robotic applications. Most of these systems suffer from the problems of noise in the range-data and resolution mismatch between the range sensor and the color cameras, since the resolution of current range sensors is much less than the resolution of color cameras. High-resolution depth maps can be obtained using stereo matching, but this often f…

The reconstruction of a scene via a stereo-camera system is a two-steps process, where at first images from different cameras are matched to identify the set of point-to-point correspondences that then will actually be reconstructed in the three dimensional real world. The performance of the system strongly relies of the calibration procedure, which has to be carefully designed to guarantee optimal results. We implemented three different calibration methods and we compared their performance over 19 datasets. We present the experimental evidence that, due to the image noise, a single set of par…

Real time outdoor navigation in highly dynamic environments is an crucial problem. The recent literature on real time static SLAM don't scale up to dynamic outdoor environments. Most of these methods assume moving objects as outliers or discard the information provided by them. We propose an algorithm to jointly infer the camera trajectory and the moving object trajectory simultaneously. In this paper, we perform a sparse scene flow based motion segmentation using a stereo camera. The segmented objects motion models are used for accurate localization of the camera trajectory as well as the mov…
Passive depth estimation is among the most long-studied fields in computer vision. The most common methods for passive depth estimation are either a stereo or a monocular system. Using the former requires an accurate calibration process, and has a limited effective range. The latter, which does not require extrinsic calibration but generally achieves inferior depth accuracy, can be tuned to achieve better results in part of the depth range. In this work, we suggest combining the two frameworks. We propose a two-camera system, in which the cameras are used jointly to extract a stereo depth and …

Our technique also segments out moving objects from the rigid scene. In our method, we first estimate the disparity map and the 6-DOF camera motion using stereo matching and visual odometry. We then identify regions inconsistent with the estimated camera motion and compute per-pixel optical flow only at these regions. This flow proposal is fused with the camera motion-based flow proposal using fusion moves to…

In this work, we propose a novel event based stereo method which addresses the problem of motion blur for a moving event camera. Our method uses the velocity of the camera and a range of disparities to synchronize the positions of the events, as if they were captured at a single point in time. We represent these events using a pair of novel time synchronized event disparity volumes, which we show remove motion blur for pixels at the correct disparity in the volume, while further blurring pixels at the wrong disparity. We then apply a novel matching cost over these time synchronized event dispa…

We propose an algorithm for recovering depth using less than two images. Instead of having both cameras send their entire image to the host computer, the left camera sends its image to the host while the right camera sends only a fraction $ε$ of its image. The key aspect is that the cameras send the information without communicating at all. Hence, the required communication bandwidth is significantly reduced. While standard image compression techniques can reduce the communication bandwidth, this requires additional computational resources on the part of the encoder (camera). We aim at designi…
