We introduce different types of quenches to probe the non-equilibrium dynamics and multiple collective modes of bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. We show that applying an electric field in one layer induces oscillations of a spin-1 degree of freedom, whose frequency matches the long-wavelength limit of the dipole mode. On the other hand, oscillations of the long-wavelength limit of the quadrupole mode, i.e., the spin-2 graviton, as well as the combination of two spin-1 states, can be activated by a sudden change of band mass anisotropy. We construct an effective field theory to describe the quench dynamics of these collective modes. In particular, we derive the dynamics for both the spin-2 and the spin-1 states and demonstrate their excellent agreement with numerics.
The gap in bilayer graphene (BLG) can directly be controlled by a perpendicular electric field. By tuning the field through zero at a finite rate in neutral BLG, excited states are produced. Due to screening, the resulting dynamics is determined by coupled non-linear Landau-Zener models. The generated defect density agrees with Kibble-Zurek theory in the presence of subleading logarithmic corrections. After the quench, population inversion occurs for wavevectors close to the Dirac point. This could, at least in principle provide a coherent source of infra-red radiation with tunable spectral pr…
We show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling $ν=-3$, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local $SU…
We have studied the temperature effect on collective excitations in biased bilayer graphene within random-phase approximation. From the zeros of temperature dynamical dielectric function of the system we have found one weakly damped plasmon mode. For a given electrostatic potential bias, at low (high) temperature T the plasmon frequency changes slightly (increases remarkably) with T. We have also studied the effects of potential bias and carrier density on the plasmon frequency of the system at finite temperatures.
Twisted bilayer graphene with tiny rotation angles have drawn significant attention due to the observation of the unconventional superconducting and correlated insulating behaviors. In this paper, we employ a full tight-binding model to investigate collective excitations in twisted bilayer graphene near magic angle. The polarization function is obtained from the tight-binding propagation method without diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. With the atomic relaxation considered in the simulation, damped and undamped interband plasmon modes are discovered near magic angle under both room te…
We have investigated the Coulomb screening properties and plasmon spectrum in a bilayer graphene under a perpendicular electric bias. The bias voltage applied between the two graphene layers opens a gap in the single particle energy spectrum and modifies the many-body correlations and collective excitations. The energy gap can soften the plasmon modes and lead to a crossover of the plasmons from a Landau damped mode to being undamped. Plasmon modes of long lifetime may be observable in experiments and may have potentials for device applications.
We report single layer resistivities of 2-dimensional electron and hole gases in an electron-hole bilayer with a 10nm barrier. In a regime where the interlayer interaction is stronger than the intralayer interaction, we find that an insulating state ($dρ/dT < 0$) emerges at $T\sim1.5{\rm K}$ or lower, when both the layers are simultaneously present. This happens deep in the $"$metallic" regime, even in layers with $k_{F}l>500$, thus making conventional mechanisms of localisation due to disorder improbable. We suggest that this insulating state may be due to a charge density wave phase, as has …
We discuss novel transverse plasmon-polaritons that are hosted by AA- and AB-stacked bilayer graphene due to perfect nesting. They are composed of oscillating counterflow currents in between the layers, giving a clear interpretation for these collective modes as magnetic excitations carrying magnetic moment parallel to the planes. For AA-stacked bilayer graphene, these modes can reach zero frequency at the neutrality point and we thus predict a symmetry broken ground-state leading to in-plane orbital ferromagnetism. Even though it could be hard to detect them in real solid-state devices, these…
The electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) can be dramatically different from those of a single graphene layer, in particular when the two layers are rotated relative to each other by a small angle. TBG has recently attracted a great deal of interest, sparked by the discovery of correlated insulating and superconducting states, for twist angle $θ$ close to a so-called 'magic angle' $\approx 1.1°$. In this work, we unveil, via near-field optical microscopy, a collective plasmon mode in charge-neutral TBG near the magic angle, which is dramatically different from the ordinary si…
This comment pertains the recent manuscript by Morissette {\it et al.} [arXiv:2206.08354v1]. The authors claim to have found signatures of collective excitations in electron spin resonance experiments that would be linked to the correlated structure of magic angle bilayer graphene. However, identical resonance features have already been reported in previous works on mono- and few-layer graphene, voiding their theoretical framework. A straight forward theoretical picture within the single-particle topologically non-trivial band structure of graphene delivers satisfactory explanations for the ob…
We present a microscopic theory for collective excitations of quantum anomalous Hall ferromagnets (QAHF) in twisted bilayer graphene. We calculate the spin magnon and valley magnon spectra by solving Bethe-Salpeter equations, and verify the stability of QAHF. We extract the spin stiffness from the gapless spin wave dispersion, and estimate the energy cost of a skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair, which is found to be comparable in energy with the Hartree-Fock gap. The valley wave mode is gapped, implying that the valley polarized state is more favorable compared to the valley coherent state. Using a no…
Bilayer graphene in a magnetic field supports eight zero-energy Landau levels, which, as a tunable band gap develops, split into two nearly-degenerate quartets separated by the band gap. A close look is made into the properties of such an isolated quartet of pseudo-zero-mode levels at half filling in the presence of an in-plane electric field and the Coulomb interaction, with focus on revealing further controllable features in bilayer graphene. The half-filled pseudo-zero-mode levels support, via orbital level mixing, charge carriers with nonzero electric moment, which would lead to field-indu…
We study the static and dynamic screening of gapped bilayer graphene. Unlike previous works we use the 4-band model instead of the simplified 2-band model. We find that there are important qualitative differences between the dielectric screening function obtained using the 2-band and that obtained using the 4-band model. In particular within the 4-band model in the presence of a band-gap the static screening exhibits Kohn anomalies that are absent within the 2-band model. Moreover, using the 4-band model, we are able to examine the effect of trigonal warping (absent in the 2-band model) on the…
Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. T…
We consider the zero-filled quantum-Hall ferromagnetic state of bilayer graphene subject to a kink-like perpendicular electric field, which generates domain walls in the electronic state and low-energy collective modes confined to move along them. In particular, it is shown that two pairs of collective helical modes are formed at opposite sides of the kink, each pair consisting of modes with identical helicities. We derive an effective field-theoretical model of these modes in terms of two weakly coupled anisotropic quantum spin-ladders, with parameters tunable through control of the electric …
We calculate the plasmon frequency and damping rate of plasma oscillations in a spin-polarized BLG system. Using the long wavelength approximation for dynamical dielectric function, we obtain an analytical expression for plasmon frequency showing that the degree of spin polarization P has negligible effect on the long wavelength plasmon frequency. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the degree of spin polarization affects slightly (strongly) plasmon frequency at small (large) wave-vectors and the maximum value of damping rate increases with increasing P. We also study the effects of carrie…
We theoretically study the dynamic screening properties of bilayer graphene within the random phase approximation assuming quadratic band dispersion and zero gap for the single-particle spectrum. We calculate the frequency dependent dielectric function of the system and obtain the low energy plasmon dispersion and broadening of the plasmon modes from the dielectric function. We also calculate the optical spectral weight (i.e. the dynamical structure factor) for the system. We find that the leading order long wavelength limit of the plasmon dispersion matches with the classical result for 2D el…
Emergent phenomena arising from the collective behavior of electrons is generally expected when Coulomb interactions dominate over the kinetic energy, as in delocalized quasiparticles in highly degenerate flat bands. Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene intrinsically supports a pair of flat bands predicted to host a variety of spontaneous broken-symmetry states arising from van Hove singularities and a four-fold spin-valley (isospin) degeneracy. Here, we show that ultra-clean samples of bilayer graphene display a cascade of symmetry-broken states with spontaneous and spin and valley ordering at zer…
In condensed matter systems, higher temperatures typically disfavors ordered phases leading to an upper critical temperature for magnetism, superconductivity, and other phenomena. A notable exception is the Pomeranchuk effect in 3He, in which the liquid ground state freezes upon increasing the temperature due to the large entropy of the paramagnetic solid phase. Here we show that a similar mechanism describes the finite temperature dynamics of spin and valley-isospins in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Most strikingly a resistivity peak appears at high temperatures near superlattice fill…
We devote this work to the study of the mean-field phase diagram of the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene and the computation of the corresponding neutral collective modes, extending the results of recent works in the literature. Specifically, we provide a detailed classification of the complete orbital-valley-spin structure of the collective modes and show that phase transitions are characterized by singlet modes in orbital pseudospin, which are independent of the Coulomb strength and suffer strong many-body corrections from short-range interactions at low momentum. We describe the…
Intrinsic defects give rise to scattering processes governing the transport properties of mesoscopic systems. We investigate analytically and numerically the local density of states in Bernal stacking bilayer graphene with a point defect. With Bernal stacking structure, there are two types of lattice sites. One corresponds to connected sites, where carbon atoms from each layer stack on top of each other, and the other corresponds to disconnected sites. From our theoretical study, a picture emerges in which the pronounced zero-energy peak in the local density of states does not attribute to zer…
We performed a nuclear magnetometry study on quantum Hall ferromagnet with a bilayer total filling factor of $ν_{\rm{tot}} = 2$. We found not only a rapid nuclear relaxation but also a sudden change in the nuclear spin polarization distribution after a one-second interaction with a canted antiferromagnetic phase. We discuss the possibility of observing cooperative phenomena coming from nuclear spin ensemble triggered by electrons with collective spin interactions.
Trapping electrons in quantum dots and controlling their collective quantum states is crucial for converting semiconductor structures into bits of quantum information processing. Here, we study single- and two-particle states in quantum dots formed in gapped bilayer graphene (BLG), where the electron's valley states appear in pair with their spin quantum number and we analyse spin- and valley-singlet and triplet states for various BLG and dot parameters, as well as two-particle interaction strength and external magnetic field.
We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\…
Flat-band systems are a promising platform for realizing exotic collective ground states with spontaneously broken symmetry because the electron-electron interactions dominate over the kinetic energy. A collective ground state of particular interest is the chased after exciton condensate (EC). However, in flat band systems other collective ground states can compete with an EC phase, and the conventional treatment of the effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations predicts the EC phase should be unstable. Here, using double twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) heterostructures as an example, we show …
A properly strained graphene monolayer or bilayer is expected to harbour periodic pseudo-magnetic fields with high symmetry, yet to date, a convincing demonstration of such pseudo-magnetic fields has been lacking, especially for bilayer graphene. Here, we report the first definitive experimental proof for the existence of large-area, periodic pseudo-magnetic fields, as manifested by vortex lattices in commensurability with the moiré patterns of low-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The pseudo-magnetic fields are strong enough to confine the massive Dirac electrons into circularly localized pseud…
In the bilayer quantum Hall system, a spontaneously charge imbalance state appears at the ground energy level. Gap in the collective excitation energy makes it stable against decoherence in macroscopic level. This state behaves as a spin 1/2 representation of SU(2) and can be controlled by applying the interlayer voltage. We suggest this system can be regarded as a macroscopic realization of a qubit for a quantum computer.
We have theoretically studied the collective response properties of the two-dimensional chiral electron gas in bilayer graphene within the random phase approximation. The cooperation of external controlling factors like perpendicular electric bias, temperature, doping, and substrate background provides great freedom to manipulate the dynamic dielectric function and the low-energy plasmon dispersion of the system. Intriguing situations with potential application are systematically explored and discussed. Extra undamped plasmon modes might emerge under electric bias. They have almost zero group …
Gapless spectrum of graphene allows easy spatial separation of electrons and holes with an external in-plane electric field. Guided collective plasmon modes can propagate along the separation line, whose amplitude decays with the distance to it. Their spectrum and direction of propagation can be controlled with the strength and direction of in-plane electric field. In case of a bilayer graphene additional control is possible by the perpendicular electric field that opens a gap in the band spectrum of electrons. We investigate guided plasmon spectra in bilayer p-n junctions using hydrodynamics …
We report a novel soft x-ray nanodiffraction study of antiferromagnetic domains in the strongly correlated bylayer manganite La$_{0.96}$Sr$_{2.04}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. We find that the antiferromagnetic domains are quenched, forming a unique domain pattern with each domain having an intrinsic memory of its spin direction, and with associated domain walls running along crystallographic directions. This can be explained by the presence of crystallographic or magnetic imperfections locked in during the crystal growth process which pin the antiferromagnetic domains. The antiferromagnetic domain patter…
Bilayer graphene in a magnetic field supports eight zero-energy Landau levels, which, as a tunable band gap develops, evolve into two nearly-degenerate quartets separated by the band gap. A close look is made into the properties of such an isolated quartet of pseudo-zero-mode levels at half filling in the presence of an in-plane electric field and the Coulomb interaction. The pseudo-zero-mode levels turn out to support, via orbital mixing, charge carriers with induced electric dipole moment, which lead to characteristic collective excitations, pseudospin waves, with some controllable features;…
We investigate zero-temperature plasmon modes in a double-layer bilayer graphene structure under a perpendicular electrostatic bias. The numerical results demonstrate that there exist two collective modes which are undamped in the long wavelength limit. The finite potential bias decreases remarkably the plasmon energy in a wide range of wave-vector and makes plasmon branches become Landau damped at a higher wave-vector as compared to unbiased case. We find that the dependence of plasmon dispersions on the system parameters such as the inter-layer separation and carrier density is similar in tw…
We study the in-plane acoustic phonons in twisted bilayer graphenes using the effective continuum approach. We calculate the phonon modes by solving the continuum equation of motion for infinitesimal vibration around the static relaxed state with triangular domain structure. We find that the moiré interlayer potential only affects the in-plane asymmetric modes, where the original linear dispersion is broken down into miniphonon bands separated by gaps, while the in-plane symmetric modes with their linear dispersion are hardly affected. The phonon wave functions of asymmetric modes are regarded…
In a Bernal-stacked graphene bilayer, an electronic state in Landau level $% N=0$ is described by its guiding-center index $X$ (in the Landau gauge) and by its valley, spin, and orbital indices $ξ=\pm K,σ=\pm 1,$ and $% n=0,1.$ When Coulomb interaction is taken into account, the chiral two-dimensional electron gas (C2DEG) in this system can support a variety of quantum Hall ferromagnetic (QHF)\ ground states where the spins and/or valley pseudospins and/or orbital pseudospins collectively align in space. In this work, we give a comprehensive account of the phase diagram of the C2DEG at integer…
